I mean, he did have almost a full week in between team gian marathon and this. Pretty sure that's in the handbook of proper rest days.

This should help in the weightloss.  First, you lose the weight of the tonsils (that's like 4 lbs right there).  Then, you won't be able to eat anything but popsicles for a couple weeks (another 10 lbs?).  The weight will fall right off!

That's crazy about the recovery for adults...we are a bunch of wusses.  I had mine out, along with my adenoids, in 3rd grade and was out playing the next day.  I just couldn't talk much, which my family appreciated.

 
Pretty quiet morning. Been feeling off the last week or so - neck and back have been really sore and I've been exhausted. I know I have a degenerative disc in my neck, and I've been dealing with shoulder and neck pain because of that for years. Now, every once in awhile, I'm having some pain shooting into the lower right side of my head - almost directly behind my ear. So that's been a little worrisome.

So only 7 miles today, but they were good. Heart rate is starting to come down on some of these runs, which is a a good sign. (also, the weather is better, so that helps). Then, it was on to the:

Farmers Market: lots of good stuff. Scored some cheese curds from a local dairy farm.

Home Depot: loaded up some Durarock for my shower walls and bathroom floor to get ready for tile. I'll be doing that this weekend and setting the shower pan and drain. Then sheetrock and then tile. Getting closer. Should come together pretty quick at this point.

Quik Trip: big fat coke and some donut holes.

Home by 9.  Gonna be a relaxing weekend now that the Chiefs won on Thursday, so we'll be watching the Packers on Sunday, other sports all weekend, gonna deep fry some chicken wings tomorrow, work on the bathroom....whoooboy!

I won't catch @gruecdon the way to 2K, as I am too far behind and have lost my motivation the past 2 weeks.  Hopefully the cooler temps will bring it back, this morning was a positive as I intended on just running 6 and was enjoying the weather and ran 10.

If unmotivated means running 92km/week (which is what you're averaging for the last four weeks), then I aspire to be unmotivated.

 
Say, @Zasada, you'd be particularly proud of my grandson's running habits.  I'd mentioned the trail where he took off on us and disappeared.  After we reunited and he ran the last stretch of the trail, he promptly pooped in his diaper (which he still wears when he's outside for an extended stretch).  A couple days later, I took just that grandson along with my son to a different trail, which was a wider woodchip trail (and safer for him).  Somewhere along the way in walking/running that trail, he pooped again.  He's a natural!

I didn't happen to time him at all.  On the second trail journey, we started off uphill.  He walked much of it, so I turned my timer off.  But then I didn't catch the last 1/4 mile or so with a slight downslope that he breezed through really well.  

 
Speaking of trails, I got some trails in today.  Usually when I'm on trails, I'm hiking with my son, so don't have a ton of running experience on them.  That definitely showed today - the loop I ran was about 3 miles of gravel, 3 miles of grass/dirt, and 5 miles of classic PA root and rock single track.  Wore me out for sure, and while the trail is well-marked, there are a lot of offshoots, so with constantly looking for trail markers I had a few tripping incidents.  The worst one I have no idea how I didn't go down.  Tripped hard on a big root, felt like I was almost horizontal, but managed to flail my legs out over a few strides and regain balance, which was a mixed blessing.  Felt pretty pleased with my old man agility to save it  :bowtie: , but in the process jarred my old man back pretty good  <_<   Ironically, I did actually go down once on a very minor trip.  I think I thought I would be fine and sort of nonchalantly made no attempt to regain my balance, and the next step was uneven enough to send me suddenly onto my hands.  So, yeah, need to work on all that.

Still, was an awesome morning for a run.  Very low humidity, mid 60s, and while the sun was out most of the day, a lot of the trail was shaded and even the exposed parts you could tell we're approaching autumn by how much less intense the sun is.

 
I'm failing with slowing my recoveries down. Hoping my planned longer run tomorrow doesn't hurt...still want to go slow on that with a couple of picked up miles at the end.

You might try a different breathing pattern as a way to keep yourself at a slower pace.   Try breathing in/out every third step instead of every other step.  It'll feel awkward at first (and maybe for quite a while), but it should force you to keep the pace easy.

Along the same lines, I read once what a running coach taught to keep his runners going slow enough on easy days. 

Every mile, you run the first minute only breathing in and out of your nose.

My breathing couldn't be any easier- tbh, I don't even notice a pattern. but then I get caught on somebody else's pace or subconsciously trying to pass the person in front of me and the pace starts sneaking up.

I also noticed it takes a couple miles for my legs to warm up, and my legs want to go on mile three, where the pace typically gets down into the 8:30s instead of 9:30s. I've also considered that my fitness might be coming back, so my easier pace could just be a little faster (9s instead of 9:30s).

Love this, but I have a deviated septum...my nose breathing days are behind me.

 
Ran with my old running buddy this morning for 6+ conversational pace, then added a 4 picking the pace up. 

Legs are tired but felt ok- it's my first ever 40+m week.

Just get a running watch already. You're in now.

That'll help you keep an eye on your pace and HR and keep track of your progress as well.

I run with my phone on strava. it's not chirping at me or anything, but I can easily see the pace. Will the watch keep me more honest about going slower?

You can actually set the watch to alert you when you go above/below a set range for pace and/or HR.

 
I don't remember if you run with music, but I do and that helps. I have a laundry list of different playlists and on easy days I usually just pick one with mellow music. Between that and the HR data on my watch I think I've been much better about running my slow runs slower.

Gruecd deliberately listens to podcasts instead of music on days that he wants/needs to run more slowly.

 
I've never been a music guy while running. They didn't used to allow headphones during races, so I chose to train how I was going to race.

 
Wow, not only is next Thursday (the 24th) @gruecd's wedding anniversary, but it also marks the end of his 30-day suspension.  Big day for him!

Anyone have a good headphone recommendation? 

I have been using Aftershokz Titanium and have now had 3 sets fail on me --- it all seems to be charging/electrical issues.  My first died right before the 2 year warranty, they sent me a refurbished one that lasted 4 months and died outside of the original warranty so I had to buy a new one.  The newest one lasted one month and is now dead.  I have a warranty claim in, but it's such a pain in the ### and now I'm forced to run with my wife's pink headphones (boy do I look pretty) --- oddly, she has the same brand and has had zero issues with hers.

I'm not sure if its from sweat getting into the charging slot or what, but they are also supposed to be resistant to that...or so they claim. 

I'm thinking of buying something else in addition to the replacement from the warranty, so if you got any suggestions, let me know.

Maybe a different/better model of the Aftershokz?

I use an older model of the Plantronics Backbeat Fit, and they've been great.  Have two pairs, and even put one through the wash once and it's still working.

Newer models aren't as well-reviewed, so be sure to note those if it impacts your use case.  

But in terms of being able to hear my surroundings while listening to podcasts, they're great.  They also never come off my head, have a 6hr charge, and solid bluetooth connectivity.

I'm at 1,661mi right now.  About 100mi behind 2,500mi pace for the year.

My wife has the Aftershokz Trekz Air and loves them.  So far no issues.  But I would understand your hesitation give what you've gone through with the Titanium.  The Air is slightly lighter and better built from what I've read and it's only like $20 more.  At Sam's it's $99.

 
Ran my Boston marathon.  I’ve been running slow and pretty irregularly for the past couple months due to a glute strain. I’ve had one 10 mile run in the last couple months so i had no idea how it would go.

i decided to run easy until i couldn’t run any more.  I ran a 2:09 first half and 2:02 second half for a 4:11.  I definitely could have run faster but I’m here and my glute is seemingly ok, so that’s a win. 
 

I’m more confident of being able to pace Harrisburg marathon in November. Any chance @pbm107 would run it just to run a real race?

 
Hey @gianmarco, i talked with a guy who ran your marathon you ran last weekend and he said the course was really tough.  From the relentless hills to the gravel, he thought it might have been his most difficult course he’s ever run.  So kudos to you and the Mrs. on completing a really tough marathon course for your first one!

Is there any time limit on the race (I don't mean a date, but a time to "run" it)?  Wildfires willing, I'm going to be on the Oregon coast with my mom and others Sept. 23-27, and I've no doubt my 77-year-old mom would be up for doing the 10K because she's badass.

Dang that is badass indeed!  No time limit at all. There is a link to enter your time on the sign up page if you are so inclined, but it is not required. For what it’s worth, I will not be posting my pitiful 5K time. Would be cool to have you and your mom participate!  Just make sure you register her separately with her address because we’ll be mailing out the race medals and shirts in October.
