Baby baby yada yada...run report from Mexico..

Woke up predawn to go out and do 12+ with no goals other than the mileage.

After a Wu mile, the legs said this: hm pace, less go.

Body....remember how 40deg felt balmy the other day? This 75 is feeling like walking on the sun. And we're going to need to continue discussions about further digesting that enchilada mole and three margaritas.

Legs...####. go.

.....this continued for the first 7 or so miles. I got close to a turnaround point of my second different and last out and back and everybody was in wicked witch of the west unison- we're melting?

But what's that heading toward me down this dirt road from the dock turnaround up ahead? Another runner?

Mind....we will catch him on the way back and crush his soul.

Legs and body...#### that.

Mind...crush soul.

Legs and body...uhh...####.

Caught the guy just before my hotel.

And turned out to be 8th all time strava fastest on one desolate stretch (Floppinho..."out of 7?") while I was still going easyish before the mind started playing tricks on me. Will head back and try to see what I can do there to climb up a couple spots.

The water is insanely clear and amazing in our annual spot in Cozumel.

Ok....back to baby stuff.

I remember something a good friend of my told me as he aged. Which is...things just hurt for no reason.

And this is true. I’ve noticed this every year since I turned 40. Stuff just hurts. Or is sore. But the good thing is, some of these aches and pains occur because we are active. And that’s a good thing.

At this point, I know every day I am going to hurt from something. Muscles, my stomach, headaches....whatever. It’s part of the process of living.

Getting old sucks balls.
:kicksrock:

I don't know if I didn't write an annual report last year or if I just can't find it. But looking back was fun to read others comments. This one struck me square.

I'll write my report in the next couple days, but the one thing I know is in 2021 running will continue to become cross training for swimming and strength work. Whereas those used to be the cross training.

This whole thing is just surreal. We went through multiple rounds of IUI and three rounds of IVF, the last two of which resulted in miscarried pregnancies (one with twins). For this to have happened spontaneously and during COVID is truly a blessing and a miracle.
I just have to say - your baby being born is one of the highlights of my year.  Knowing what you guys had to go through, the incredible odds to get to this point, during this year of all years - that baby is a pure miracle.

Whether you believe in a higher power or not, to me this is THE MOMENT of 2020. God Bless you guys, man. Those pics of her and the happiness on your faces literally makes me tear up a bit.

Proud to know you man. You are going to be an incredible father. And both of you incredible parents.

Umm...I just crushed a soul. In Mexico. Nothing?

Thanks, man. Proud to know you, too. I know how hard you've worked to be an awesome dad and role model for your kids. Hoping I can follow in your footsteps and do the same.

This whole thing still doesn't even feel real yet. I imagine it'll hit me tomorrow when I'm driving out of here with a newborn...

DODS (delayed onset daddy sleeplessness).  It's a thing.  Welcome to the club.
Yep

18 years later it still hits every so often.

Hey all,

Hope everyone is having a good holidays so far.

I just thought I'd mention I ran this afternoon with the Mrs. and actually did a workout.  Felt pretty good after a couple "meh" days after getting the vaccine.  If able, you should check it out on Strava and throw a kudo (or 2) over my way when you get away from your families and stuff.

Ok, thx, bai.

Hey guys,

Me again.  I'm going to try and get out tomorrow, so if you guys happen to be on your phones or desktops or whatever, don't forget to take a look and send over some encouragement.

Ok, sorry for the interruption from all this baby talk and stuff.  We can get back to @gruecd being a Dad and stuff or whatever.

Peace.

Merry Christmas, fellas. Heading out around noon. Weather will be 49 and sunny. Not sure it can possibly get better than that! 18 scheduled for tomorrow morning with temps in the 30s.

Merry Christmas, run fam. Fueled pretty effectively last night while building a dollhouse for like the 5th year in a row. Might run later or just get back on the fuel.
:banned:

guys on holiday, keep posting tropical pics please.

Merry Christmas!  Ate all of the cookies this morning.  Not running today, but will keep making sure glycogen stores are high for tomorrow's long run.  On the running front, got a headlamp and a handheld.

Today's Strava post updated with a couple shots...

the pre-dawn run turnaround point (back into steady 25 mph wind), the beach where spent the rest of the day on the other, less windy side of the island, the view from our hotel room.

Eta...feliz navidad!

Been a few months away and lots of craziness in life including not running much at all, or having anything to do with running. Hunkered down at the in-laws in the Detroit area now until the 3rd. Will do a proper update tomorrow but I think I have a few pages to go back and read first.....

Welcome back on both fronts!

Hope all's well with the family...merry christmas!

Hey guys, I'll write more later, but I'm happy to announce that our baby girl, Lenka Ruby, was born at 5:16pm. She was 6 lbs. 11 oz. and 21 inches. Mom and baby are both doing great. Such an amazing Christmas gift.
Congrats man!! That's amazing and there's no better feeling than being a dad. So many emotions you didn't even know existed!!

I’m thankful for all of you and this thread. It’s helped me more than you’ll ever know.
This. I haven't been in here near enough lately but in the last page or do I've laughed, teared up a bit, laughed some more and just been happier for stopping in this evening. This thread offers so much for the body and the soul. I thank all of you for being in here.

This, along with the Otis thread, is the most supportive and positive thread 'round here.  So while I'm not a regular (since I'm not a runner!), I want to thank you all for your endless kindness and good cheer.

grue, I'm piling on more huge congrats and reminding you, since I saw your wife's picture right after giving birth, that you way outkicked your coverage.  Where does Lenka come from, by the way?  I mean the name, not a recounting of how you guys procreated.

Cheers and merry wishes to the lovely people of this thread.

Lol yes, I'm well aware of this.  :lmao:  I'm a lucky guy for sure.

"Lenka" is Polish. My wife was born there and came to the U.S. when she was 21. We were initially going to name her Lena and use Lenka (the diminutive/"cute" form) as a nickname. But then we decided to avoid the confusion and just name her Lenka. Her middle name, Ruby, was my dad's mom's name. She died in her 50s when I was in grade school.

Sunnava...I didn't remember which direction the segment went for the "achievement" on Strava and guessed wrong.

I went for it on the way back instead of the way out...dropped my time a little on the way out since I wasn't really pushing the other day, but stayed in 8th. Might've pushed up a spot or two at the pace I did on the return leg. Also had to off-road through some bushes to circumvent a couple road blocking puddles...got a bit scratched up and dirtied my new hokas!

Is the gru family home yet? That's the moment where the big...oh wow, wth are we supposed to do now?!.... happens. Fun.

Don't forget the Karp 5 "Ss"... shhhh, swaddle, shake, sardines, sangria

Got home late last night. It was definitely a rough night, but thankfully we have an amazing support system, and I'm sure it'll get better once we get settled in.

After slugging through life in Paris, nothing refreshes the soul quite like several day in Detroit.

(I'm a Michigan guy, so yes, I'm aware the Detroit area has a lot of nice 'burbs.  Nevertheless..)

I don't mean to steal grue's thunder but life is sweet anywhere in the world (even Detroit with the in-laws!) with our new little chunky monkey

Eloise Margot Harris was born on December 4 in Paris and is a lively little lady after three weeks. She's been on quite a few adventures already and many more to come!

@gruecd, looking forward to seeing you here on the board in the wee morning hours

Awwww!  Steal away!  There's room in our hearts to celebrate little Eloise as well.  Congratulations!!!  :pickle:     I'm sure the grandparents are thrilled to have this time with you all.

Beautiful.  They're both lovely names.

I forget...are you a Lions fan or a Bears fan? Not that either one is necessarily any better than the other...

After today vs the Bucs, I'm not sure one would admit to the former... Like TPA voluntarily brought in Gabbert ***at the half***.

Not a big devotion to either one.  Growing up with a conservative Christian bent in Grand Rapids, MI, we didn't get too entangled with Sunday football (the Sabbath Day was for rest, after all).  After moving to Chicago for my career/adult life, I've been a fair-weather fan of the Bears.  I do bleed Detroit Tigers blue, however.   Not that that hasn't been painful through the years, although the '68 Tigers WS win over STL and Bob Gipson was a formative event in my life.  [Fun fact: Mickey Stanley, from that championship team, grew up in Grand Rapids.  During high school, he dated our neighbor.  She used to babysit us when we were very little kids, and apparently he'd sometimes come over to help ...probably just necking in the back room after she put us to sleep.  When he received the HS athlete of the year, I'm told he was teased about his babysitting.  TMI: On the assumption that he probably spanked me at some point, to this day I've never washed my bottom.]

Today was the final straw? Lions fans are used to the team being a total embarrassment. having grown up halfway between Detroit and the Pontiac Silverdome. i like to say I was a Lions fan by birth, Titans fan by choice.

I always marvel at the athletic feats in this thread and I know how much time and effort guys like Grue and Harris put in to this hobby.  Nothing you guys have done or will do is as difficult but rewarding as being a Dad.  Congrats to you both and good luck!
