Ran a 10k - Official Thread (3 Viewers)

I am always impressed by people's ability to go back and find posts from random times in the thread.  And now you all are pulling up your first post.

This is going to sound stupid, but how do I find my first post in this thread?  (And I think mine was from the old thread on the old board....is that even archived somewhere.)

I'll hang up and listen.....

I have all my posts cataloged in a book.  Super easy to go back and find what I wrote on a specific date.

But in all seriousness, I know when I started running and just went back to a page around that time and then went from there.  If you give me an idea of when you started posting here, I can likely find it.

I went into my profile and pulled all my posts.  I mostly don't post in other threads, so it was easy to go back to the approximate time I started running and find my first 10K post.

Glute update -- Things are definitely looking up.  I think I have found my issue.  COVID has caused me to sit A LOT more than I did in the past.  I think all the sitting has impacted my glute.  I figured this out on the weekend through a lot of internet searching about ### muscles.

Monday AM i went to work planning on getting a standup desk.  By 9 a.m., I had one installed in my office.  I stood all day.  I was tired, and my assistant said "I think standing all day isn't good for you either."

Regardless, the glute is feeling better and stronger.  Its not all the way back, but I'm focused on standing a lot more at work and at home.  I'm hoping this is a serious step in the right direction of getting this pain in the ### (literally) in my rearview mirror.

I'm just going to try to keep plugging along long slowish runs when I can.  Unfortunately, April is probably my craziest month workwise, but the weather always is a pick me up this month.  I'll throw some interval work in there when I'm feeling good and probably when the weather is a touch warmer so the muscles are loose.

Anyway, that's my update.

Also, its awesome seeing new faces in here.  Keep working and improving yourself.  There are several guys in here that run insane paces and definitely tap into what they and others share.  Just don't try to compare.....comparison is the thief of joy.

Gosh......maybe 2010-ish?  I just remember @gruecd helped me train for a marathon and was sharing his knowledge on this board.  At the time, I think he was the only crazy mofo who was running 26.2 (at least that I remember).  And now look what he's done to all of us.

Hey @gianmarco, I just got an email for that relay on June 5.  is that the one we were going to do last year?  Is it something we may try to resurrect?  Or no?

I don't even know if I can get my wife to agree to me flying across the country for it, but I want to try if we think we could get a team together.

Yes, I think sitting is one of my biggest glute-pain drivers as well.  For my recent 20-milers, I spend most of the day after running them moving around the house, or walking with my wife.  Not sitting.  And my legs felt way better the next than than they have when I run long, and then just sit all day.

I also have a standing desk at work, and try to stand from time to time.  And get out for a "work walk" once in a while too.  It all seems to be helping.  My glute isn't sunshine and rainbows -- it still hurts when I run -- but it isn't getting worse.  That's a win for me.

I think @The Iguana mentioned it earlier.

So, yes and no.  The one coming up in June is the original KT82 relay that is point to point with a van and driving.  The camp-based event that was put up last minute a couple years ago that we did together here and that we were supposed to do last summer is now in September.

I would be open to doing the camp-based one this September and/or the KT82 van P2P relay next June (June, 2022).  But, with still so much uncertainty and only 2 months away, I think trying to plan/navigate the relay this June will be dicey.  Plus, I'll be training for the J&J marathon in July, and while this shouldn't affect it too much, it's just another layer of something to plan for when I probably don't need it.

Wow, 2007.
Weird, the post link isn't working.

Hey guys,

I've heard alot about this thread and finally ventured in. Gotta admit the size of the thread was a bit scary.

Some background on me....I'm thin but pretty lazy and have run races (max being an 8 mile race in about an 8:30/mile pace).

Finally decided to go sign up for a half marathon. Signed up for Boston in October 2010. Decided to do a local half marathon 3 weeks before. Finished the local in 1:49.

Did Boston in October and weather was perfect and i felt great. Ran it in 1:39 (7:35/mile pace.)

Eventually decided to knock off a marathon off my bucket list and signed up for the Disney one in Orlando on 1/9/11.

My longest run was on T-giving (16 hilly miles -- did it in a 7:49/pace.)

I'm happy because I just ran 8 miles in the dark (left my house at 9 p.m.) in the rain and did a bunch of neighborhoods (with my reflector vest). I very easily could have bailed on this run.

In any event -- a few questions.

Since I'm not slow (but certainly not fast either), I'm wondering what is a realistic pace for my marathon (I'm thinking doing 8 min/miles for the first 20 miles and decide from there) as well as how should this translate to my training pace.

For my long run, I'm thinking of doing about 20-21 miles on 12/18 (3 full weeks before the marathon) before tapering down. Sound right?

Finally, I've read all kinds of things about interval training, and admittedly, I am probably doing it all wrong. I currently (and don't laugh) sprint a quarter mile (usually 5 min/mile pace) and then the other .75 miles do about a 9 min/mile to recover. And I do that for 3-4 miles. Is that bad? What's the risk? How would you recommend I improve?

I appreciate the collective wisdom from those that have done the marathon.

Also any hints about marathon prep from now until race day is appreciated. I know to hydrate especially in the 48 hours before the race.

I have been dealing with something similar, an upper hamstring thing that doesn't really cause pain just tightness/weakness.  If I am running at an easy pace I barely notice it, but going up a hill or anything close to race pace I can feel it and can't really generate power on that leg like the other.  This weekend is the half marathon that I was training for, got in a good 13 weeks of training of a 18 week plan before the injury. I won't be racing it, plan to run with my sister and a friend.

Sorry I haven't been active in this thread, I guess needed a mental break from running as well as a physical.  Found the page where I made my first post responding to @Ned during his fall breakout.

You snapped your fingers and got action so quickly? That’s mighty impressive.
Well, there was one that wasn’t being used, so I snapped it up.  It’s not perfect as I have two monitors and currently only one is on the stand.  I’m traveling for a few days for work so once I’m back in office, I’ll see what my options are for both screens.

Pretty cool you found it.  Thank you!  I was pretty talkative.  I was like a 2010 version of @The Iguana.

I remember @gruecdand @tri-man 47 being the biggest helpers.  Grue helped with training and prep.  I think TriMan kept telling me to keep doing lunges.  Lol

Well, since the interest was brought up, we can at least get a preliminary idea of who would be interested in what:

1) Late September, 2021(Date TBD) -- Mississippi Running Festival

This is the base style camp that some of us did in 2019 and we were supposed to do again this past summer in 2020.  It is teams of 6, you run 3 legs that combine for a total distance of about a HM.  Temperatures in late September aren't perfect but definitely better than June.  We get to sit around at a tent when not running and I'm guessing the logistics will be far better than our first time when they put together this entire event in less than a week.

2)  June, 2022 -- KT82 trail relay

This is what we were supposed to do originally in 2019 before the floods wrecked that plan and changed it to the base camp style relay.  It's a point-to-point race that starts in St. Louis and goes 82+ miles west along the Katy Trail.  I drove for it 2 years prior (and what got me into running) and participated the following year in 2018.  We rent a van and keep driving the course as one runner runs his leg and we head to the next checkpoint.  It's a long day and almost assuredly hot AF but a great time.  Total distance is similar to the above but will vary somewhat as we aren't running the same legs.  Some of the positions are definitely easier than others.

With teams of 6, we could potentially field 2 teams for these as well.  There are also 3 team options that would obviously double the mileage everyone does.

So, if interested in either/or, just reply and I'll try to get together a list.

Yeah, I’ve thought about one for years but never officially made the request. With two monitors, a keyboard and a desk phone I don’t know how well that would work. I’d want one of those that could be raised and lowered so I could mix it up.

But in all seriousness, I know when I started running and just went back to a page around that time and then went from there.  If you give me an idea of when you started posting here, I can likely find it.
:goodposting:

I had seen this thread often but never posted in it until I decided I was going to run a HM with about 6 or 8 weeks to get ready. So I knew my first post was about August or September of 2018. So, I picked a random page (like 400 or something) and did a little "price is right" higher/lower until I found about the right spot. Was pretty easy to find.

Put me down for both.

I would love to do the September one depending on the exact date they pick.

The girl at work has one that handles two monitors. They offered me one but I just grabbed a box from the warehouse and basically made my own.

Works fine when I want to use it.

I would love to do both, but September 2021 might be tough depending on the date.  I’d guess it’s a “probably not” due to schedule but not desire.  Put me on the waitlist due to unknown date and uncertainty with my work obligations.

The June event - I’m definitely interested.

Same for me: Sept '21 is not ideal due to Boston soon after; June '22 should be fine.

Once they announce the June 2022 date let me know. Hopefully I'll have school schedules by then and unlike prior years hopefully it doesn't interfere with this thing. Regardless, I'll start stockpiling dum-dum's now so we're prepared.

This is our kind of crazy - a young guy running around Lake Michigan (30+ miles per day) to raise money for Alzheimer's.  My daughter works for AA and pointed this out to me.
