Better than naps.So we're getting an entire month of push-up chat. Great.

Finished day 1 of the 100 pushups a day challenge.
Also, I just registered for Monumental Marathon in Indianapolis.
Let's gooooooooo.
100 a day allows for a day off/miss here and there.Hey, guy -- its 73.33333333333333 pushups per day challenge.
Always trying to one up everyone![]()
Also - Monumental is a possibility for me to pop the marathon cherry if Columbus doesn't work out.
I did a 100 per day last April so I'm doing the same this year. If you want to only do 73.3333333. Be my guest. (By April 5, I'll hate this stupid challenge.)Hey, guy -- its 73.33333333333333 pushups per day challenge.

Actually, we need you to assist @The Iguana with his watch post race. He's been known to struggle with it.Not sure yet. Definitely not the marathon. But with that big of a group there I may sign up for half and then heckle you guys the last 6 miles with my shovels.
Yes.I’m thinking about running Monumental. Are you guys staying overnight on Saturday?

I'm just doing the 2,200 in April thingy -- hence the 73.33333. I'll probably hate it by tomorrow since I haven't done a push up in ~11 months.I did a 100 per day last April so I'm doing the same this year. If you want to only do 73.3333333. Be my guest. Just come to Monumental. You'll have more fun than in Columbus.
@The Iguana already has it covered for his next raceActually, we need you to assist @The Iguana with his watch post race. He's been known to struggle with it.
you can drive here faster than you can run a marathon... you don't want to miss this!No days off - that's how you get complacent!![]()

All things considered, I'd probably prefer to run on my home course than traveling to Indy. Though, the fun factor of this crew will be taken into consideration.
My hotel reservation is Fri-Sun. Still haven't registered for the race, but probably will soon.I’m thinking about running Monumental. Are you guys staying overnight on Saturday?
Maybe, though the marathon is doubtful four weeks after Boston. But as noted, they have a HM ...and a 5K. It will be a rather epic weekend!I see we have 5 people who are planning on Monumental. Myself, @gruecd, @Harris, @Zasada and our hometown hero @The Iguana. Are there others that are considering joining us? @tri-man 47, @ChiefD, @gianmarco? Any chance we can get @JShare87 to pack his gloves and join the party? What other marathoners am I missing? @pbm107?
I have a hotel booked. I have not signed up for the race. I'm not currently planning on it. Will see how things progress over the next 2 months.Just looked at the race calendar. Realize @Juxtatarot is getting ready to blow the doors off things this weekend. How are you feeling? Race day weather forecast? All systems go for sub 6 pace?

And to be honest, there is a half marathon too, so we can be completely inclusive.
JW Marriott is the most convenient place to book. Just a block from the start/ finish.Which glorious hotel are you guys booking?
I'll let @ChiefD answer this question for me. Do your thing, pal.Just looked at the race calendar. Realize @Juxtatarot is getting ready to blow the doors off things this weekend. How are you feeling? Race day weather forecast? All systems go for sub 6 pace?

Trending a little behind 2,500-mile pace for the year, but it is what it is. Doing what I can to stay relevant as a runner while also being there for my little girl and trying to stay married.
I don't understand. The question isn't whether he'll win, but rather how much he'll win by.
It made sense in my head, but I'm on cocktail #6 for the day so #### if I knowI don't understand.
Day 1: 95 Bare in the basin, gaelic stormI'm just pushing for one song each day.
Considering that you're training for the Boston Marathon, that should be a YES.
This is a three year project for when I turn 55 and my qualifying mark hits 3:35.Considering that you're training for the Boston Marathon, that should be a YES.
I think what he's saying is that your best chance at qualifying is to stack a few quality marathon training cycles on top of each other and reap the exponential gains in fitness that come from doing so. What better time to start than this fall? This is a three year project for when I turn 55 and my qualifying mark hits 3:35.
Hopefully by then things are somewhat back to normal and I could shoot for a 3:30 to hopefully have enough of a time bank to actually get to run the race.
I'm taking one crack at this. Need to get efficient and stronger.
So much truth to this.I think what he's saying is that your best chance at qualifying is to stack a few quality marathon training cycles on top of each other and reap the exponential gains in fitness that come from doing so. What better time to start than this fall?
As it should. Was googling “exponential gainz” and it brought me here.
Yeah, a three year project should probably have at least three marathons in it.I think what he's saying is that your best chance at qualifying is to stack a few quality marathon training cycles on top of each other and reap the exponential gains in fitness that come from doing so. The beauty of the internet is that you can also arrive here by googling "BMF," "bear attack," "poosay," or "shovel." Oddly, googling "mapmyrun" takes you to the dark web.As it should.
Yeah, in total alignment with the why behind the one shot at this mindset. But perhaps there's a middle ground that can be achieved - somewhere between the stress of fitting in the necessary training while also reaping some of the cumulative benefits. Thinking taking a marathon-esque approach to training for half's. Meaning, taking elements from both of hanson's programs - the half and the full. When the family calendar says the full calendar isn't going to work that week then audible to the half.So much truth to this.
That said, I totally understand @ChiefD's patient approach to wait for a more favorable AG and a time when his kids are older and more independent.
One? Yeah. Three? It'd help, but I don't think it's necessary. Anecdotally, I was a completely different endurance runner when covid hit and I only had done one marathon since Oct 2016. I was extremely confident that barring an unforeseen raceday surprise I was qualifying for Boston, so the only question in my head was whether I'd smash qualify or just qualify. That was world's different vs the only other attempt 2 years prior.Yeah, a three year project should probably have at least three marathons in it.
It won't be this fall. I'm not going to be ready and I'm not going to run one just to run one. My plan is something like this:I think what he's saying is that your best chance at qualifying is to stack a few quality marathon training cycles on top of each other and reap the exponential gains in fitness that come from doing so. :checksFBGbirthrecords: Yup, 55.4. 2024 is when it's on. I'm all ears on the best marathon to take my shot. I turn 55 in August, so I'd be in that age group for Boston 2025 if my math is correct.
1. For the rest of 2021, just add volume. Maybe do a half marathon in the fall just for a nice carrot after all the work. But the goal is volume, volume, volume. I need to build an awesome, efficient base first. I need to get out of this mindset of: RUN RUN RUN RACE DON'T DO ANYTHING to RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RACE RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN........
Also, core work. Lots of core work. Strength work. Pushups, squats, whatever. I need to be stronger and leaner.
For volume this year, what type of weekly mileage are we talking here?It won't be this fall. I'm not going to be ready and I'm not going to run one just to run one. My plan is something like this:

2. For 2022 add more volume. Probably my normal spring half marathon and maybe another half in the fall. But volume, volume, volume. Core work. Lots of core work. Strength work, etc.
3. 2023 will include a marathon. Probably spring of 2023 in Carmel. I know the course and a winter training program suits me better. Then maybe a half in the fall.
4. 2024 is when it's on. I'm all ears on the best marathon to take my shot. I turn 55 in August, so I'd be in that age group for Boston 2025 if my math is correct.
These are my loose thoughts at this point. I have to change a lot of my life to accomplish this, but my kids are getting older and will be driving and working and such. My house is done and I'll have time.
Not 100% sure yet. I've been so off and on the last month or so. I'm thinking for April be consistent at 25 miles per week and pushing 30.For volume this year, what type of weekly mileage are we talking here?
If you run 40 miles a week and do the strength stuff you mention, you’ll be in excellent shape this fall. Not 100% sure yet. I've been so off and on the last month or so. I'm thinking for April be consistent at 25 miles per week and pushing 30.
Then try and do 30-40 for the rest of the year, with most weeks being around 40 or so.
May I weigh in here? I think adding a marathon a year will help you. It took me 9 marathons before I qualified for Boston. In those races, I learned and tested training ideas, pre-race nutrition, and then everything during the race (nutrition, pacing, mental games, etc).It won't be this fall. Good advice here as well. I look back at my dozen marathons, starting 14 years ago, and when I remove the three clear bonks and the three Bostons, the other six are quite a linear progression from marathon #1 to marathon #12 (MCM) with my pace dropping by about 9-10 seconds/mile for each race over the years (from 8:39/m to 7:57/m in a downpour). Training became more refined; race prep and in-race strategy improved; knowledge and confidence increased. Boston, of course, has its own unique dynamics, and I'm hoping my prior experiences there will pay off in the fall.May I weigh in here? I think adding a marathon a year will help you. The marathon is a mental beast just as much as it is a physical beast. I think getting out there and learning what works (and more importantly what doesn't) for you will pay big dividends for you.
In my 9 marathons, I kept thinking, let's just get a little faster each time. And as the BQ times moved slower as I was aging, I was getting closer and closer to making my goal I'll admit, I had in my head, I was going for it, when I got the extra 10 minutes when I was turning 45, so I planned it similar to how you are.
Just one man's perspective who spent many marathons trying to figure out how to get myself to Boston.
Update - I was right, these things really hurt todayI'll probably hate it by tomorrow since I haven't done a push up in ~11 months.
It's not been too bad. I was a bit nervous the first couple times out and took it easy. I'm currently sporting a jockstrap (per doctors orders) and compression shorts for my runs and they are doing their job. I should be back to 40+ miles this week.@xulf, how did your...**ahem**...equipment handle a return to activity?

I initially thought the 2nd quote was in response to the first instead of about push ups and it totally made me cringe.Update - I was right, these things really hurt today![]()
