Hopefully they'll be able to get the data off his watch and see if he got lost and then incapacitated, or something else.  I'm sure some answers would help his family.

Pretty sure I read that he wasn't wearing a GPS watch.

My guess is that he got lost, got overcome by the heat, and then maybe sought shade under the tree?

Yeah I think that was a misquote -- the article meant to state that he wasn't wearing an LTE watch (meaning they couldn't track it).  

At one point the searchers were carrying his phone around in the park hoping that it would pick up his watch via bluetooth.

On Strava, he did all of his runs with a Suunto watch.  So assuming he didn't stop the watch when he got lost, it should have his track on it for download.

The question to me is, was the game trail a mistake on his part or just a way of getting to shade...or maybe trying to get to a residential neighborhood that the article said was near where he was off the trail.

Sad, sad business.

 
My daughter started kindergarten again today. Her first day of school with her own classroom. Where does the time go? Doesn't seem long enough ago that she did this as a student.

As a running note, I have the 3rd event in the run317 series tonight, so that should be fun.

A lot of the schools around here (Indiana) have gone to a "balanced schedule". Schools starts even earlier than before and summertime is shortened. But they get out 2 weeks for fall break and 2 weeks for spring break. I think the school she is at splits the fall break apart - one week in early October and one week for Thanksgiving or something like that.

Moving start time up an hour to 6am local  per Jake Reilly’s coach so coverage will likely adjust up

“Tomorrow’s women’s Olympic Marathon will start 1 hour earlier. 
6am local time instead of 7am.”

We get a week for Fall break, I think 2 (maybe 3) for Xmas, a Winter Break some time in Feb and Spring break in April

ETA - I checked.  2 weeks at Xmas but I forgot about a week at Thanksgiving.  6 full weeks off during the year.  We rarely get snow days down here which is nice as the weeks off allow us to plan trips

With the Achilles barking, taking today off instead of doing a recovery.

No way I'll be able to do the 40+m weeks I was doing when running my preferred schedule (6 days/week). Caught in that familiar limbo land of running or trying to limit damage and increases injury.

I’m with you but I think the schools starting now are done end of May.

August in NY is awesome, would really suck to be in school during one of the 2 great weather months.

 
Run (317) Event 3 - Bottleworks/Mass Avenue

I didn't exactly "race" this but you get a race report anyway... A little bit of the 5k+ course is actually part of Monumental course in the early going. It's a near perfectly flat course (7 ft of elevation gain per strava) and the only issue was some broken roads in the early going that you had to be careful not to turn an ankle. 

  • Mile 1: 7:39, HR 151
  • Mile 2: 7:59, HR 171
  • Mile 3: 7:42, HR 178
  • 0.23: 7:39 pace, HR 180
  • Official (preliminary) time: 24:57, 107 out of 1006
My goal last night was just a nice, consistent pace with a solid effort. I mostly accomplished that. First part of Mile 1 I was side by side with a rather attractive runner who pulled in front of me about a half mile in. I happily followed along for about 1.5 miles until my watch buzzed at the 2 mile mark and I realized we had actually slowed down some. From there I picked the pace back up a bit and sadly left the scenery behind. Finished strong and felt ok other than my breathing was not nearly as smooth as I would have liked and my HR was a lot higher than I wish. 

That said, it was 85 with a DP of 58 so a healthy suck index of 143 so I'll take it for now. Especially considering that Tuesday night I ran 7 miles that had my legs feeling absolutely toasted by the end. I gave myself the day off on Wednesday after running a little over 25 miles in 5 days plus having done about a 6 or 7 mile brisk trail hike in between. 

 
Also, FTR, the mass avenue/Bottleworks area would be a great place for those in town for the Monumental to hang out after the race. The area is an old Coca Cola bottling plant that has been redone. It's the first time I had been to it since it opened after remodeling. I didn't exactly explore a ton but did walk through the one bar that is pretty awesome. There's duckpin bowling, pinball, ping pong, bocce and I'm not sure what all else in there. Pretty sure it also has a pretty big selection of craft beer, etc.

My kids went back Wednesday. Yeah it's early and kind of dumb to get kids back in school in the south in August. But at least their HVAC works.

👍 My sister is the IT leader for her district in Indy. she and her freshman son started a couple weeks ago.

 
depending on the day, I can fit a few of those but some combo of flappy hands and day dreamer might be the most common of the demonstrated.  

 
Anybody else watching the women’s marathon? Molly Seidel grew up very near where I live now in Pewaukee. See her out running every now and then when she’s home.

It’s so damn hot that they’re basically jogging (for them). Just under 6:00 pace at 4.2 miles. Commentators estimate that 1/3 of the field might DNF.

Get nervous for her at each water spot, she got bounced around at a couple already. 

 
I’m watching this Swiss chick (Fabienne Schlumpf) tower over the field at 6-feet tall, and I imagine that’s how I must look out there…

 
Commentators have done a great job throughout ..lots of solid perspectives.  The guy does a great job of drawing out insights from Kara.

 
Molly left leg/stride looking a little tight?  That’s the one with the tape on it,  too.  C’mon, Molly.  Dig deep!  I’m worried about what we’ll see coming out of commercial.

 
6 seconds back!  Then a 30 second gap behind her to #4.   Let’s see if the Kenyan HMer in second fades (she has fallen off of Kosgei).
