Ran a 10k - Official Thread (1 Viewer)

Big Bottom's chance for hope annual 5&10 K is on Sept 11. Virtual race as well. Link.

I'll be doing something...not sure if the legs will let me train for either to "race" , but I'll be participating. Who's with me?

Yeah, I'll at least do a tempo run in support of Big Bottom (I have a 20 mile 'race' the next weekend ..Fox Valley).

Nice - thanks for posting.  I did the virtual 10k last year and will do again.  No times will be posted.

No run for me this morning. I have a calcium heart scan scheduled for 8 bells.

Follow up appointment with a cardiologist on September 1st. Hopefully the first step to either ruling out something or figuring out what is going on with me.

May try and squeeze out a few miles after. Supposed to be a hot one here for the next week or so. Have a good day ladies and gents.

Hopefully it's all good news!

Gl, gb!

That swim at the end of a reverse tri is no joke 😫

No idea how I did but survived. It's a totally different experience.

Men’s marathon looking like 6pm est on USA network.

Goat and Galen amongst others.

I haven’t seen the women’s 10k or mens 1500 races or relays yet (just results), couldn’t find on tele this morning before heading out.  Nothing clear in my tv listings to see sooner, will get on in prime time tonight I reckon.

Who is in for Fantasy Football this year?  Here's the list so far:

ChiefD
That's a good list.

I'll join, can we have a Kansas connection division? 🤔

Or a runner division and an "anything but running" division. :)

So... I went out to run 13 today. I spent the first 4 miles trying to talk myself into an alternate route and going shorter. And then miles 5-8 or so when there was no longer a "shorter option" I suddenly found a little of the old passion and felt ok out there. Miles 9-13.1 were a brutal slogfest that was zero fun. Made me question why I even bother. But then I was done, had done a HM, I think my second slowest ever but I did it. If not for a recent talk with @ChiefD, I might have quit early. Unfortunately he made me finish it. Thanks, man!

That's when you know when you are back. You had every opportunity to quit, and you didn't.

Now build on this.

Kind of a bizarre, unpleasant run for me today.  Super humid, mostly cloudy but partially sunny in spots to add to the roasting factor.  I wanted to go 8-9, tried to go out at a comfortable pace.

Looked down a few minutes in to see I’m going a bit too fast, tell myself to slow down.  A few minutes later, somehow I have sped back up.  Repeat every half mile or so for miles on end.  Somehow I couldn’t seem to reel my legs in to do what my brain knew they needed to do.  Ended up totally predictably cooking myself, finally decided to just cut it off at 1 hour and walk the mile+ that would be left at that point.

So I think I did the smart thing, but am just kind of shuked by my terrible pacing today.  I can’t recall another time where I had such issues dialing my pace in.

Sounds like a terrible way to die.

Good job!

Yeah, kind of sounds a little unsafe, actually.  We had a swimmer drown here in Alberta recently during a standard Tri.  I imagine the risk of that would be much higher after a long run & bike.

The swim is in a pool with 5 lifeguards and a lot of spectators.

I'd completely agree if it were a long run or into a river or lake.

Thinking about this some... not quite sure it means I'm back yet. I don't recall ever really having so little enthusiasm for a run ever. A lot of it is just knowing/feeling what all I have lost and feeling sorry for myself for not being ready to crush this race this fall. There's still time to prepare but not the way I wanted and I know I have no one to blame but me. Nothing I can do about that now other than to try to salvage something... I just lack a certain level of motivation but I'm working on it.

The upside is that I feel better this afternoon/evening than I thought I would, and that is even with doing a couple hours or so of work in the yard. So, I am feeling pretty good about it now, but I still remember how little fun I was having this morning. 2 years ago, pretty much every run leading up to the race involved me doing something I had never done before, which made it all new and exciting. Now I have something to compare to and the comparison is pretty pale.

Women’s 10K …

wow, great finish.  Loved watching the top two driving hard to the finish.  Those strides were a thing of beauty.

Men's marathon ongoing.

Trevor Hofbauer (CAN) isn't a favourite by any means, but I'm cheering for him.  He runs in my neighbourhood and I follow him on Strava.  Go Trevor!

These bros are going 2:08 something pace and Rupp shadowing the Goat.

I’m grilling and drinking through 10k.

Edit - Just said 2:09:30 pace

Well la-di-da I'll just do some tri thing and not tell anyone or give a bib number for tracking so anyway i'll just roll out of bed and do three things better than 219 other people out of 225 and just jump in here and casually mention it and stuff.....

  it's a small race

Rocket man august 28 will be fun.

Hobbs 5 Mile swim September 12 will not be fun

Racing the station September 25, doing as a relay with a buddy who just moved here (I bike, he runs) should be a blast

So I took all of last week off. Ran Sunday after not running since the previous Sunday. Felt good, even if Achilles were still there and barking.

Did a shorter bridge/hill repeat (3x instead of my usual 5x 1:40 +/- hill repeat) and didn't go super hard, trying to keep stress off the heels. The week off clearly helped, and I ended up posting my 2nd and 3rd fastest ever times for the climb- 1:24&7...I really am usually closer to 1:40). I'll continue with my usual week, just taking things by feel a little easier or shorter than normal. SOS on Thurs, longer pace run on Sat.

Im still weighing a fall marathon, but I know I have to commit to training for it now...which is tough while juggling the Achilles issues. I don't want to flare out with the Achilles, but I also want to continue the base fitness I've accumulated already and not lose it by shutting down too much. I guess I could look at another 1/2 instead, but tbh Im not feeling that as much.
Sorry about the delay.  Just trying to catch up here.

Have you thought about getting some shoes with a slightly higher drop which may take some of the stress off the achilles?

Just a thought.
