It was so cold this morning that I was unwilling to remove my hands from my mittens so that I could blow my nose during the run.

So, from the start, I resigned myself to just letting the snot flow.

This is what you get.  (WARNING:  GROSS, click at your own risk)

Oh, and Merry Christmas!!!  May you all find future PRs in your stockings!

...and I didn't wear a shirt this morning in my jaunt through the rain.

Have a good one fellas! Hope Santa brings you new running shoes, but, oh no, not those ones, I wore those last spring and I hated them.

I got a pair of those crazy nike sneaks, I mean these things are ridiculous.  Like Ferraris for feet, omg I’m so in love.

wife wants me to wear them around the house and I told her no way I’m taking any steps in these unless I’m racing.

wow

merry Christmas everyone!

Awesome!  But get at least one workout in before racing in them since it’s a verrry unusual feeling (including cornering).

Race her to the bedroom, if you know what I mean. Bonus if you keep em on throughout.....

Belated Merry Christmas gents. For those who celebrate, I hope it was a great day. I’m in Florida so I’m happy with the warm weather (last year we were in Aruba.). However, Christmas is meant to be celebrated in the cold. 😊

@Brony - I hope your symptoms are mild and recovery quick.  I think you’ll get those 12 miles this week.

I got some of these for Christmas

Zensah Running Leg Compression Sleeves - Shin Splint, Calf Compression Sleeve Men and Women https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003JYXB6E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_T6P59TFJ910GQ1X041GY?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I wear these after runs for recover right?

I wear them while running...unless I have on tights.  I actually never wear them outside of running...though, I probably would wear them when on a flight if I'd been doing any sort of training.

What is the science behind compression sleeves or socks? Not trying to be critical but what benefit do they provide? I’m curious because I am having something similar to shin splits and wonder if these would help.

Not a doctor, but I believe it's circulation-related.

Dr. Google is a big fan of compression for shin splints.

This is my understanding.  It helps the circulation which helps healing (I think).  I started using them because of calf pain.  The days I dont wear them, I can feel it in the calves later in the day (a more dull pain).  When I wear them, I dont generally have any calf issues unless it's a hard workout.

After long and/or hard runs, my calves look like they're possessed by aliens ...all kinds of little jumps and jiggles in random spots up and down the lower legs.  I don't feel anything, but there's a lot of movement.  When it's particularly active, I'll pull on compression socks to help quiet the monsters within.

Looks like I’m going to finish 2021 a shade under 1200 miles running, pretty happy with that.  Bike coming in at around 1200 miles as well.  No races but PRs at every distance up to HM.

2022 I plan on running my first marathon and hopefully a half Ironman in August.  Need to somehow wedge some swimming into the schedule.  Last goal is to knock off about 15 lbs to get down to 185.

12th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2021

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Well, I didn't make any. So, can't really fail when there were no expectations...but BQ or bust became the goal during the year. And what a bust. I'm happy I didn't quit though.

Accomplishments or PRs in 2021:

Nnnnnope.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

I raced twice and one was a bust, so I better find something within the other one. I s'pose successfully navigating a half marathon on a sheet of ice qualifies for some kudos.

A race or race training disappointment during 2021:

This is obvious, but I'll zag and say poor troubleshooting prior to the BQ attempt. I did everything I could during and in the 12 days leading up to race day to give myself the best chance to be successful, but the damage had already been done. Neglecting my balky calves when they first surfaced in July and any other time they barked until October was this training cycle's fatal flaw. Sure, I did some work to combat, but I needed professional assistance and I didn't seek it out until it was too late.

Total training volume and successes during 2021:

I topped 2,000 miles for the 6th year in a row yesterday. I also did 5 straight weeks of 60+ miles and I'd never done that before. Doing that despite the real life stress levels I was navigating at that time is still something I still struggle wrapping my head around.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

Given my physical style I need the gym to stay healthy. Sure, 2020's accident is a convenient excuse for taking so long to get mostly right again, but no gym access played a role. Once I regained strength in summer the healthy-injury yo-yo game ended. Yes, I still had calf problems I was blissfully unaware of, but needing to amend my plan weekly due to a different problem ceased being a thing once I was consistent at the gym again.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2021:

SayWhat's epic western states. Watching juxt unlock another level and now knowing there could be even more. Pbm smashing a marathon PR despite having to take a dump for more than 20 miles. Xulf over coming covid and breaking the marathon virgin mold and running a smart, successful race. And above all else, gianmarco red lining for more than half of a marathon to beat science and run a sub 4 marathon on for all intents & purposes no training.

Goal(s) for 2022:

As I wrote after the marathon, I was more than just injured; I was burned out. To my surprise I am in a relatively good place right now though...physically speaking anyway. The game plan for rehabbing my various injuries was stressful just looking at it, but I've only had one (minor!) setback as I've made my way ahead of schedule. My body isn't ready for much > 8 miles yet as that's what caused my setback, but aside from that the last 6-8 weeks couldn't have gone much better. I'm as strong as I've ever been since transitioning to endurance running and that was not something I thought possible early November.

Goals? I have no interest in any sort of training plan, so while my headspace now is vastly different than this time last year my racing goals are the same: none. I'm being sure to get to the gym at least 3x per week, by winter's end would like to consistently run 5-6x per week, physically be able to complete 10+ miles without having a bill to pay after, and maintain newfound good dietary decisions. Nighttime is still a problem, but processed anything does not sound appealing before then and I intend to keep it that way. I'm sure a racing itch will return sometime during the year and when that happens I'll make a plan, but I'm not going to force the issue.

@MAC_32 - I've been thinking about you lately, and I was wondering something in regards to your training and what you consider a fail on that BQ or Bust marathon:

Is it possible that all the gym training mixed into all that running is actually a negative for you come race day? I've wondered if your body may be in an over-worked mode (for lack of a better term) that actually fatigues you unknowingly.

I also know you love that grind and working and such, but do you think it may actually be a detriment?

Let's you are a very slow 5k runner (think 34 minutes or so).

How long would it take to train and get this down to 30 minutes? 28 minutes? 9 minutes?  :lmao:

9 minutes -> forever

The others, not as long.

Depends on the 34 minutes ~11 min/mile pace. Is that a death march or starts and stops or consistent throughout. Is it on any regular running or training, if so what? Are you healthy?

Some consistent running will likely bring you down from that ~11 min/mile 5k pace quickly but pretty impossible to know how far you can drop it.  I think some regular efforts to build endurance and strength get you under 30 mins in a matter of weeks and easily by spring.

The gym work absolutely played a role in October's failure. That was more a function of the schedule than anything though. That is why I was so non committal throughout summer about doing a marathon. I had no confidence I had enough time to adequately prepare my body to BQ.

I think my ideal training cycle is longer than most. 20-22 weeks out I need to focus on the gym. 16-18 weeks out I need to focus on endurance. 12-14 weeks out I need to blend the gym with SoS with enough endurance. Then 8 weeks out I need to take the foot off the gas in the gym and focus on peak. That isn't how the schedule fell this year though. I essentially started 15 weeks out and had to compress too much into too small of a window.

I think the only way I can shrink the cycle in the future is by sustaining the gym work like I am now. If I end up in a similar position as I did this summer then I must have foundational strength already built. Without it my body breaks down before the cycle ends.

Five of us are on track to hit 2,000 miles ...a few of us for the first time. @bushdocda, @xulf@gruecd, @MAC_32, and myself all need less than 100 miles over the next four weeks.

I know this wasn't intentional, but this became bulletin board material for me a few weeks ago.  I was thinking "Hey, I'm not that far from 2,000 miles!  Is @tri-man 47 thinking it's out of reach for me?  I'll show him!"

So I put my shoes on, and had my best month of training since I started running:

  • 422km (262mi) -- highest monthly distance volume ever
  • 12,447m (40,836ft) -- highest monthly elevation gain ever
  • 54h3m (2.2 turns of the earth) -- most active time ever (includes weights/PT)
  • Best/fastest 20-miler ever (race or training)
  • Multiple Prairie Mountain PRs (but still not on the ascent, that one eludes me)
...and today, with one day to spare, I hit 2,000 miles for 2021.

Thanks for the motivation!  I know this is totally unintentional on your part, and totally fabricated on mine.  Yet my (fabricated) goals are what keeps me getting out there.  Even in -33C/-27F temps.

Will tackle my year-end summary tomorrow.  Not sure if I'm going to run or take a day.  We'll see.

Not very long at all. Others may know better than me, but I would say 2-3 months. But there are a lot of factors that come into play. Everyone is different.

:jawdrop:          :tebow:

Your December elevation exceeds by 2021 elevation by 35%.

BMFery at its absolute finest!!!!!

Too bad that @Zasada is only 6,200 ft. from again reaching 200,000 ft for the year.

Hahah, I noticed this myself, too.  But I think it will go unmet this year.  It would be more than a Prairie double tomorrow to make it happen.  Time requirement for that could result in divorce (given the time spent on trails this month already, and my hope of starting 2022 right on Saturday).

But there is the little  on my shoulder goading me on!!!

Happy holidays fellas!  I've been out on a few runs lately, literally starting over with the couch to 5K approach to build back up from nothing. But gotta start somewhere.  We got hit with 8"-10" of snow here this week so haven't been out in a few days, but it's melting finally so hope to get back out tomorrow, as long as everything doesn't freeze into a sheet of ice overnight.

I was out walking Summit yesterday afternoon and I see a runner with a guy on a bike following along behind.  As they passed me I only got a glimpse of the runner's face, but as I watched his stride as he ran away I said out loud, "holy ####, that's Galen Rupp!".  I can't be 100% sure, but it sure looked like him getting in a workout with his coach cycling behind him.

Anyway, hope you all are well, and Happy New Year!

If everything goes according to plan tomorrow, I’ll hit 1,800 miles for the year. Just 4 miles to go for an all time high and 250 days of running out of the year. I think this is the first year where I haven’t had to take significant time for an injury. Going through a little something now, but I am starting back up with my strength training to propel me into a healthy new year. I told @gianmarco the other day, I really feel like I am on the verge of something big in regards to my running. Marathon is 30 days away. Happy New Year, everyone!

Been pulling it together slowly but surely with back, adductor and lazy as competing mehs.  Back is fine now, adductor is coming around, lazy is more shorting runs not skipping.

Some new cushy shoes from Santa Me (Nike Invincibles, Atreyu Base2s and Saucony Shift1s) will get the bulk of the upcoming many miles. Past couple runs felt sort of ok as opposed to ### so that’s been welcomed 📈

Congrats y’all on 2,000 miles or whatever goals you set and made. More so for just getting out there and being your BMF self.

i didn’t quite make it to my unstated goal of 1 hour per day throughout the year, finished 347 total hours over 349 days. 34% run, 31% swim, 26% bike, 9% other (mostly weights and kayaking). Next  year I plan to get the cycling over 35%, run/swim may be roughly equal.

I was able to hit my 5200 mile target this week. Though I'm really not one for the numbers... Running now cycling is my outlet from the real world and I'm rarely thinking about specific paces or numbers. I just commit to a distance once I start pedaling and then just go. I am content that I can exercise consistently without all of the bs that I went through with my knee and running.

I thought covid was in my rear view mirror as the fevers and sweaty bed (ick) ended last Friday. But I tested positive on a rapid test yesterday. I currently only have a runny nose about 30 min each day and I have the energy to do some zwift riding. The bummer is that I need to stay isolated for another few days. While we've relaxed this around the house, it still limits what I can do. Oh well.
