Ran a 10k - Official Thread (18 Viewers)

I can work towards 10K, etc.

I have heard of Strava and I will definitely register and join the FBG group.  Anyone got a link handy so I don't have to search for it?  It will be good motivation for sure.
Careful!!!  That "etc." is like red meat for the wolves in this thread.   :D   Or to beat the others to it - congratulations on your first marathon!

Strava.com ...we're Team FFA.

A walk/run combo is a good way to start.  It'll be fun to watch your progress!

I did some more searching yesterday and ended up buying Intervals Pro from the Apple Store for $8.  It seems to get really good reviews, and unlike a lot of the other Couch to 5K (C25K) apps, this one is completely customizable, so once I build up to 5K, I can work towards 10K, etc. and stay with the exact same app if I want to do that.

That said, I just completed Week 1 Day 1 of my 5K journey!

  • Warmup walk for 5 minutes
  • 8x intervals of 1 minute running following by 90 seconds walking
  • Cooldown walk for 2 minutes
And I love how it captures all my stats in the app too!  Probably nothing to you guys but it's a start and I'm excited to see where things go from here.

  • Total Time = 27:01
  • Distance = 1.94 miles
  • Active Cal = 191.8
  • Average Pace = 13:55/mile
  • Total Steps = 3353
  • SPM = 124
  • Avg Heart Rate = 136bpm

We are heading to Disney next week for the kids' spring break week.  I'm anticipating a super relaxing vacation :sadbanana:

No idea on my ability to get runs in while we are out of town.  I'm piling on the miles this week to negate some of the damage I will do to my training next week.  I imagine I will also be getting in tons of steps, which is pretty much the same...right?  :hifive:

Other than next week, my training is still on track. Legs are tired and lately the wind has been extra sucky.  We are about at shirtless weather, but I need to drop 5-10 lbs before going that route.

Thanks, I requested to join.  I guess now I need to figure out how to get my runs to upload to Strava LOL.  I installed Strava on my iPhone and expected it to ask for access to Apple Health, etc. but it did not.  I'll do some digging and see if I can figure that piece out.  I know my neighbor across the street is a big runner and I think he uses Strava with a Garmin watch so maybe he can get me pointed in the right direction.

That's what a lot of us use.

Strava will be great to have people here follow along as well as see what others do here. However, do not compare yourself to anyone here.

If you want to be successful with this, just get out and run. It doesn't matter how fast you go. In fact, the slower you go, the better things will be for you to start and the more you'll enjoy it (read not hate it) which will then make it more likely you'll stick with it.

Eventually you'll learn the key to running faster isn't to run faster but to run more. It sounds wonky but it's true.

Basically, get out there and run at a pace that you can carry a conversation. Stick with it and things will go well.

Good luck and welcome.

Approved!  Initials are MF from Indy.

WELCOME!

Enjoy your trip, but as to the bolded, there is no such thing.  #TeamICanSeeYourRibs

I'm relying on you for a detailed report on navigating their new price gouging genius plus and lightning lane tools. We're going late April and I need to lose those same 5-10 lbs you do before arriving. I have no shame fixing my pasty white mid section while we are down there, but am nice enough to spare passer by's of anything that jiggles.

We’re going mid June, the cost of it is sickening. I plan on run 6 easy everyday, but with a shirt.

We were supposed to go 2 years ago, right as COVID hit.  The park shut down like 5 days before we were to arrive (we were still going to go despite the unknown effects).

We had credits or whatever, so we are now using those.  But...my oldest just turned 10 (yesterday) and now she is an adult for pricing. And our flights were $150 more each this year than what we paid and had credits for.

My wife knows better than to show me what this nonsense costs and frankly, I don't want to know (yolo right?).  We will be doing the new fast pass, or whatever that's called now, that is like $15 a day each. I have heard these trips are both fun and a giant headache. We are ordering groceries to be sent to the hotel through Amazon, so that may save us a few bucks.

I'm just stoked to hit the pool and see some real sun.

Why at marathon pace?
I am not in PR shape, and I’m afraid if I race it is going to take too long to recover. I am hopeful that I’ll be able string a few decent weeks together after this and race Broad Street. I have bombed enough half’s and would like to avoid a suffer fest.

This wasn’t the plan when I signed up for this race, but I got COVID at the beginning of the year and wasn’t able to carryover the fitness from the marathon into this cycle.

I don’t think I am that far off with my fitness, but after long runs or tempos it takes a bit longer to recover. I am doing a good job with my weight, only 3-4 lbs over PR weight. I will be going for my tentative goal MP for the fall, 6:35, which should be a decent workout/test.

In other news, I was asked to lead a 3:30 pace group at the Two Rivers Marathon tomorrow.  (Any chance this is your race @pbm107?)

I told the race director I was NOT in 3:30 pacing shape, but they had someone get hurt so they were scrambling last minute.  I explained I could likely hold this pace for 20 miles and after that, it would be a crapshoot.  So, that's the plan.  I hope to run 3:29:30, but if not, then not the end of the world.

This is likely my final long run before Boston. 🦄

Good luck tomorrow, I will be attempting something similar the next day running a half at marathon pace.
Thanks bud, enjoy the love run. Thinking once I get up the hill halfway I can press the pace in some fashion the rest of the way. Excited for a race environment.

5 days until race day.

I'm still feeling run down and my breathing is not 100%.  V02 max is down to 50 from 56  :oldunsure:

This thing is going to be a disaster time wise versus what I was shooting for...but I already knew that.  I was hoping to still get in at sub 4 hours, but I ran 15 at that pace a week ago and it wasnt as good as I had hoped (HR not at all what I wanted).  We are also unseasonably warm by 10-15 degrees.

Not tons working in my favor, but I'm still going to give it a go.  I didnt train for 20 weeks to sit on the sideline.  My thought is to start at like a 9:30 pace and just go from there.  If things are clicking with HR and weather, I'll try to get that to 8:50 and hope for the sub 4 hour.  If the whole thing is a disaster, I can bail where the HM ends.  But, for me to bail out before 20 miles would take something really wrong happening.

I'm going to be slow and I may have to walk, but I'm going to do my best to finish this thing  :boxing:

It's been a little over 6 months since this post. And, after my hammy injury and COVID, I just now got back to 56 on my V02 max.

That is F'ed up.  But, at least I'm back (my highest fitness level).

ETA - that didn't include any real time off

Quick update on my Couch to 5k journey.  After my first day of walk/run interval training (which was completed about 10am Wed), I felt completely fine until after dinner and then had pretty bad knee pain/soreness on or behind my right kneecap for the past two days.  It hasn't bothered me much at all just walking, but it hurts quite a bit walking up and down the stairs especially.  I work for a big company and am lucky enough to have a fitness and health center right on-site at my office so I stopped in yesterday.  The nurse I talked to is a big runner so he explained that running causes more injuries than any other activity/sport, so that was fun to hear LOL.  Then he said the first thing to do is to get fitted for a good pair of running shoes.  So I went to a dedicated running store near me last night and ended up buying a pair of Saucony Triumph 19 shoes along with a fancy insert based on the arches on my feet.  My knee was still a little sore this morning, but I went ahead and did my 2nd set of walk/run intervals anyway and felt fine afterwards and still feel fine now, so hopefully that's a good sign.  Fingers crossed.

(Edited to clarify that I did try on a bunch of shoes - Hoka, Asics, and several brands as well - but the Sauconys felt best on my feet)

One more question for you more experienced guys.  The running store dude said I should be using running socks made of synthetic materials and not cotton socks like the Nike Dri-Fits I have now.  Can anyone recommend a good budget brand of running socks that I can buy on Amazon that don't cost a fortune?

enjoy the torture! err I mean have fun!
I’m still trying to get my wife on board with the idea of taking our youngest two or three when son #2 goes to college. The youngest will love it. The last time we went, son #4 was 4 months old. He starts middle school in august.

These Saucony socks are cheap and not terrible.
Do they run thin or thick? I have a couple pairs of saucony from runners warehouse, the 410 blue. Really like them. Ever since I’ve been wearing the right size shoes I’ve been preferring thicker socks.

Oxymoron.  Good running socks are expensive.  I wear these exclusively.  And they're worth it.
When you put the miles on that Gru or many others here do, the better socks are worth it. For us mortals, These work. The ones that Juxt posted look similar (I think)

Ouch.
ran 9 this morning, 1 easy, 2 near goal HMP; x3. During the last easy mile my Right leg buckled 3x, almost knocking me over. I was able to complete the run and nothing bothered me again, but now my lower back, spine, and right hip keep seizing up with a slight current running through the spine.
Hoping this gets better as I leave tomorrow with our oldest for a few days in gulf shores. And then oak barrel is Saturday.

Thin. Not recommended for winter. My issue with them is I get holes in the toes quicker than I’d like but, for the price, that’s not a huge deal. My feet don’t get especially sweaty though so I’m not picky.

Winter here wouldn’t be as big an issue, but that helps. 👍🏽

Quick race recap - Marine Corp 17.75k

This is the race that really started it all for me in 2017, get a bib to this race and finish you get guaranteed entry into the MCM. I had a deferral to this from either 2019 or 2020 and haven’t run it since 2018 (4 years and over 7000 miles ago). Happy to report I’m a lot stronger both downhill and uphill for it, knocked off 8 minutes on my course PR and flowed pretty much comfortably hard (twss) and pressed the last half mile or so to take some souls for our boy @JAA. I paused my tunes to listen to the sound of it.

Uneven terrain (paved to nice hard packed trail to unpaved driveway type rocky to street and the back to the trail/unpaved to paved to finish) makes it interesting but it was dry so NB rebel 2s were good choice and great cool conditions were perfect.  Soopershooz on rock is not something I’m doing.

Pleased with this effort/feel/outcome combo with just a couple workouts in me this year and getting into the beginnings of a speed block.
Have a great weekend all.

edit- I have an entry to Marine Corp Marathon in DC Oct 30th I wont be using if anyone is interested in pouncing on a spot in the next couple days until March 30.  Used to sell out in minutes hence the pre-qual race schtick they have.  Not sure if it’s sold out or if Covid and adding the 50k distance has changed the demand.

Re socks that aren’t the Mack daddy or the Daddy Mack but have held up, I’ve had good experiences with these, probably have like 9 pair after liking the thicker ones and then getting a few of the thinner ones. Haven’t put a hole in them yet  I keep my balegas and feetures  for when I want to feel sexy.

I get these. Been using them the last couple years and through a marathon cycle.

Cheap and work great.

Re socks, I love merino wool socks.  I go with Fitsok Isowool for all my running/trails/hiking.  Never got a blister.

Much like shoes, though, go with what works for you.  Which is why I don't change from these socks.  Not broken, no need to fix.

I use the same and have the same issue. I don't hate or love the socks. They are just there. Definitely breathable during summer. They seem to last about 2 years. A couple have gotten holes after a year, a couple have gone beyond 3.

But with 6 pairs for $12, I don't really care.

The Love Run half went as planned, goal was to run it at 6:35 pace, ended up at 6:31 with an average HR of 161. Like I said before I knew I wasn’t in PR shape but it encouraging to see that I’m not far off. I ran Indy Marathon at 6:40 156 in better conditions and faster course.

The plan is get in 3 weeks of decent training ahead of Broad Street and try to race that. Not expecting a PR there, but it will a good way to close out the spring season before summer buildup for marathon training.

I think it'd be interesting to try those but don't think I'd ever pull the trigger.

However, I love the "patented 5 toe design". We are going to "design" a sock that fits each toe... and then patent it.
I used to have issues with blisters, tried all the usual stuff and nothing ever worked. Bought a pair of these with the same thoughts most have but they have become my workout sock of choice and I've never had another issue with blisters. They aren't uncomfortable, you don't even realize you have them on.

+1 on all of this.  I'm not a runner ([threadguys] - yet), but I've worn nothing but Injinji for nine years and many thousands of miles of hiking.  Not a single blister.

Nice 20-miler yesterday, @gruecd.  Strong pace.  Wouldn't know you're running injured from that!
Thanks, but it should've been way better.  I didn't eat enough beforehand, and I didn't drink nearly enough during.  It was cold outside, but I was still sweating a lot (shocker), as evidenced by the salt stains on my shirt sleeves.  I didn't take any salt tabs beforehand, and I didn't drink anything besides a few swigs of water when I stopped at gas stations to take my GUs.  My HR was probably 10 points higher than it should've been throughout the whole thing, and the last few miles felt pretty rough.  But I'm glad I got it done.

Foot actually feels pretty good today, but tomorrow morning I see the esteemed Dr. Anderson in Green Bay.  I'll consider his opinion and then make some kind of decision on how I want to proceed with this.  If I do decide to proceed with surgery, I'm contemplating putting it off until next January or something when it's really nasty here in Wisconsin.

Wait, I thought you HATED summer running.  Why not just get it done in June?  :P

I do. But I have other #### that I do like to do during the summer, and I'd prefer to not be in a boot/surgical shoe.

I'm just joking.  I hope you can avoid the surgery all together.

Your running solid distances and without major pain, so I'm optimistic there is an alternative therapy for you!
