Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

Geez, y’all already had to deal with tornadoes and hurricanes and brutal cold and blizzards in winter and regular thunderstorms and stupid humidity/suck indexes. But at least you didn’t have to deal with the smoke we have out here in The West. Until now.

Today ends up being worse air quality than the last 2 days...200+.

Did 4 at ghmp on a 7 total mile run. Eyes burn.

ETA - Garmin fitness score had me at a +5 to start, ended at a -5

OZ's workout challenge

June's pull-ups routine was an interesting and, ultimately, a very productive challenge. My first day I struggled to do: 2. By the end, I was comfortably doing multiple sets of 4 or 5 and was able to hit 10 reps near the end. I revised the goal twice and reached 500 (half of @-OZ- ). This was noticeably effective on the upper arms and shoulders, which have moved from puny to having at least some definition. The next several weeks will be choppy (cottage, conference, and grandson #3), but I hope to keep going with maybe 100 pull-ups/week ..so thanks, OZ!

Awesome! Love that you’re doing it and it helps! Pull-ups was always my strength, probably due to swimming in HS. I’ll always remember going out for an ROTC scholarship which included a physical portion. I forget how many events, but many including a basketball toss which I sucked at, a run which I did better, and the last event was pull-ups. The NCO that was administering the test stopped me at 20 by telling me I already got the scholarship. I’m not there now but can do sets of 12.
One thing I didn’t expect (but probably should have) is how calloused my hands are now after a month of pull-ups.

Next up - 7 minute abs (count the minutes, you don’t need to do 7 every day but try)

I'm also considering moving today's workout to tomorrow, possibly at the expense of my long run legs. No AQI issues, it's just going to be 94F at my 8 PM run time. Our A/C died right before these consecutive 100-degree days, too - thinking of @Juxtatarot as I sweatily type this out.

I also lost a VO2 Max point after Tuesday's crappy run. Mine had been coming though. I had a noticeable dip in performance coming off of covid last month, and it has been slow in coming back. Might be good timing to prevent me from doing something dumb. I was almost talking myself into Erie, but between that being a bad weekend schedule wise and me being the furthest from marathon shape I've been in probably 4 years, I need to be realistic.

If you need some AC help, I know a guy.

No AC has been a piece of cake for me so far. However, the hottest it’s been is the low 90s here and it hasn’t been that muggy yet. I’m looking forward to the challenge.

I was sniffing around at doing Erie to join the @gruecd and @bushdocda party, but my body is really struggling right now. Trying to get myself in shape in essentially 7 weeks before I need to taper is not realistic. I need the extra few weeks so unless a miracle happens, I'm not going to Erie.

DBAP. Get out there.

I ran last night when it was >200 here (literally the worst air in the world right now). Didn't have any noticeable impact on performance.

OK, you convinced me.
🤔
We’re heading to Indy today. Just checked their AQI, 179 🤦‍♂️
We’re going to the savanah bananas game Friday. Should be fun but I do like breathing.
Supposed to rain here pretty good later today. I'm hoping it helps with the air. It's better here today than yesterday for sure but still pretty smoky.

Drove through the Kentucky monsoon.

Squeezed in a run just before lunch. Got outside ready to go and had a faint barbecue smell, checked and the AQI was 174 but decided to roll anyway. Probably a good decision because it seems to be getting worse here and I'm thinking we'll be over 200 before the day is out. Which, incidentally, when we had this a few weeks back the forecasts for future AQI were horribly inaccurate, so take them with a grain of salt if you're dealing with this smoke crap.

On the stupidity front, I noticed things were feeling a little unsecured about a mile into my run and then realized that I was still wearing my sleeping boxers under my shorts. Whoops.

Yeah and now the weather is showing that most of the rain is missing Indy, which is kind of a bummer.

Just drove through winds I haven’t seen since Kansas. Watching out for flying monkeys.

Yeah, my drive home from work was interesting - between non-functional red lights to downed limbs, it was quite the trek.

Freaking love this place (Calgary) right now. Lows of 55, highs of 75. Dew points in the 40s. Mountains. Soft trails. Flora and fauna. Sun comes up 0530. Down 2200.

That is all.
Congratulations! We’re all so happy for you and your pristine running conditions! Read the room next time, pal.

Just going to rub in it further (as @-OZ- notes, I'll be less braggy in Dec/Jan). 55F this morning. Beautiful sunrise. Rained a little last night, so the trails were soft but not muddy. Herd of elk greeted me 3K in, then deer (throughout), and finally cows late in the run. Air remained cool and clean, with the sun continuing to shine through the trees and glistening off the dew on the grass. It was incredibly quiet/still, except for a few birds serenading me. Had the whole conservation area to myself for the ~3hrs I was there. Took it slow and easy, pausing lots to take photos or just appreciate the moment.

Channeling @ChiefD a bit, I then went to get a haircut, bought some rockfish and salmon filets from the grocer, will grill those later today, paired with baby potatoes and herb seasoning. Got home, poured myself a local microbrew, cut up some bell peppers, and now enjoying both while watching Astros/Rangers.

A very good day.

Head south tomorrow, and back to 100F temps and 75F dew points. You probably won't hear from me much then.

I have written this so many times over the last 3 years that it feels like it's lost its meaning, but I think I turned a corner this weekend. While I planned to extend Saturday's run to 6, which was my longest run since mid May, I did not plan on a back-to-back. The wheel felt fine Sunday, so I went for an easy 4 without incident. I planned on a backyard workout yesterday, but no run. After the workout the wheel again felt fine so I went for another easy 4 - again, without incident. While I woke up today sore it isn't the bad wheel, it's just being out of shape, so I'm gonna go again and if it behaves maybe I'll go a little further too. Although I am looking at a suck near 150, so maybe not, but nice to be able to write that as the reason and not the bad wheel.

As long as this goes well it's nice going into vacation feeling healthy instead of wondering if I will be on the other side. Hopefully I can find and actually sustain a rhythm the 2nd half of summer...

Had a great workout/slog on Sunday.

Two miles, 46:48 time, 704 ft climbing. Actually ran the last 1/4 mile and hit a 7:49 pace on the downhill. First time in ages the legs were doing something besides a shuffle. Thank goodness no one was coming the other direction because at 265 lbs stopping on a dime wasn't happening. Bought back memories of days gone by. My quads are also trashed today.

Dang this Garmin has a lot of data. Stamina, training effect, average/max power, cadence, stride length, vertical oscilation, ground contact time, estimated sweat loss.

I think I’ve changed my mind and now will be buying a forerunner 965. The maps are a primary reason.
It looks like Amazon increased the price recently, I presume so the deal looks better on prime day.
Any other ideas on where to find one for less than $599?

The spectators at the Tour de France have to have gotten run over or caused crashes with their jackassery.
It’s like freaking bike/bullfighting with flags.

Slept in an extra couple hours today.

Won't make that mistake again...friggin heat/humidity. I only had 1.5 hours for my run before a work call. After ~5miles out, I realized I made a horrible mistake underestimating how my body would deal with this nonsense at the pace I planned to run. Had to push through...sucked but I made it back in time :towelwave:

Rocking a mild headache since.

Good news, the Heat Acclimation calculated on my watch jump up pretty decently.

It's not a joke. Unfortunately, a lot of times I just don't have a choice so I just suck it up. Luckily I'm still not running very far or long.

In terms of the worst: Humidity > Sun > Temp

I'll gladly run in 95 degrees if there's shade and little humidity. But even 75 degrees with dew points > 67, especially in the sun are just intolerable. I texted with a couple from here, but the other day in something similar, I lost 7 lbs while out for about an hour. That was while drinking some on the run. It legit takes me longer to cool down/stop sweating than it does to actually run. It's so sad.

But, I've been trying not to complain and just getting out there. 2 1/2 months away and starting to see a little semblance of fitness. Nice to not have every run suck no matter what pace I run.

Today was a good run.

I left my watch at home and didn’t realize it until 15 minutes after I left to meet my running crew.

There was one person who was running my workout and i was going to use their watch. However, their setting was sharing the pace at that moment (as opposed to lap pace for each mile). It was futile trying to follow them so I just ran my own workout.

I wanted to do 7:05-7:10 pace for 6 miles, however, I was able to go faster than that (partially due to no watch and only looking at the strava on my phone periodically and then doing the math). The 6 miles ended up being in the 6:45-6:55 pace on a very warm and muggy morning. 70° with 67° dew point.

My running has been an absolute grind as I’m dealing with aches and pains all over. Today felt decent however, glute and calf were barking in the last hard mile.

I’m trying to carefully navigate training for a road marathon BQ attempt on Oct. 1 and an ultra trail run with @Zasada and @gruecd on October 13.

Good workout today in really tough conditions, I hope you're not attempting the 60k this weekend that you mentioned on Strava. Between the 800s from earlier in the week, today's workout, and the weather being what it is, a 60k race would be a lot. Add on top of that you're dealing with aches and pains. What marathon are you running Oct 1, Wineglass?

So, here is the MRI update for those interested in the Saga of Shovel Man.

1. Got an MRI and an MRA on the brain. As a PSA, if any of you guys ever have to do this, it flat out sucks. I've done MRI's before, but with this one they put a plastic deal that covers your face. So if you keep your eyes open you are really looking at a piece of plastic that is maybe 3 inches from your face. Very unsettling for me. And since they ran both of these tests back to back, I was in the tube for twice as long. About 45 minutes. I didn't know the length of time going in, so if any of you ever have to get this ask them to keep you apprised of time as it goes. That would have helped knowing approximately how much time I had left.

Anyway, the test came back negative for tumors or aneurysms. Had some markers on there for normal stuff for someone my age, but may get further review after the neck stuff is worked on and am still having head pain. They think the head pain is caused by the neck issues, so on to that.

2. Got an XRay and MRI on the neck. My degenerative disk between C5 and 6 is worsening, and I have some stenosis, which is basically a narrowing of the spinal column. I have to go see a nerve specialist in the next week or two, and they will basically stick needles in my upper neck, shoulders and arms to see what kind of damage we are dealing with. And after that my follow up with the neurologist is June 27th.

The neck hurts constantly now. But there are periods and some days where it feels a little better. Those are the days you see on Strava. Which as you can see aren't very many right now.

But, that's the way it goes. Figure it out and move forward.

Enough about me. You guys are kicking *** out there. This fall has some cool major things going on for a lot of you, so can't wait to keep following and reading the stories. This part of the year SUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKSSSSS.

But this is the grind that lays all that groundwork for fall racing success. Keep Rockin Boys!! :headbang:

Yes, October 1 is Wineglass. Any chance you'll be there?

The 60K "race" will be a workout. It's a 15K loop 4 times. If I start to feel like I'm pushing too hard or too far, I'll take the DNF no problem. This isn't a goal race, its simply a training run/hike that I'll be doing with other people. I don't have any expectations other than to get some serious time on my feet.

We didn't make it over to Hayward last night, bummed to miss the 10Ks but just too much going on at home/work. I also missed my PT running in the 1500, and she didn't qualify so won't get a chance to see her run. We will be there the next three evenings to catch the semis and finals in most of the events.

RIP Suunto.

Mountain lakes Olympic tri.
TLDR - no podium today, possibly my worst tri since I started getting into it.

Swim - 1200M two loops - you have to get out of the water after the first lap. With rocks in the water that part sucked. Felt decent enough, the watch died but the official site shows 21:50, 3rd AG.

Bike - two loops around the lake, 16 miles each, beautiful and felt good. Until I got a flat  at mile 12 (I think). Took entirely too long to change that, at least 7 minutes. Which meant I got behind slower riders, and with the sprint going after we did, that meant even slower riders ahead of me. At one point there was a recumbent bike (the last rider) and 4 cars trailing him. Thankfully the official escort (cop car) got into the left lane to block any oncoming traffic, so I passed the others in the left / oncoming traffic lane. Kept going, then as we’re near the turn where I got my flat earlier there’s another car staying behind a slow rider, no reason this time except the driver apparently didn’t want to go around. Not knowing whether She would decide to pass, I stuck behind her for a minute. At this point I’m fully aware there’s no chance to podium so I’m not taking extra risk. Still irritating AF. finished the ride, tried to dismount by taking the bike shoes off while riding. Got one off before I ran out of space so I ran with one shoe in transition. 7th out of 7 for the bike portion. I’m never that slow. Watch died somewhere around mile 28.

ETA - with the watch dying it’s hard to tell for certain but the tire change looks like it took between 10-15 minutes. I need to do better. Without the flat Probably would have gotten 2nd in my AG. 🤦‍♂️

Run - it’s friggin hot and humid at this point andI have no watch so I figured this is just a supported training run by feel. Just kept shuffling, probably a combination of heat, frustration and demotivation was getting cramps and really not feeling it. 51:46 for 10k isn’t great but today was fastest in my AG.

So, RIP Suunto. Got home and my Garmin FR 965 has arrived a few days early. 😎

Meanwhile my daughter and a friend are holding a lemonade stand fundraiser for St Jude in the neighborhood and raised almost $1,000 between cash and online donations. https://www.facebook.com/donate/1425031561664792/?fundraiser_source=external_url

Y’all gotta watch this mens steeple final from tonight. Never seen anything like it. BYU dude falls early on a barrier….worked his way back to the pack over a couple of laps….and then…..

Is anyone else using HRV?
Last night was my first time assessing, 42 seems low. But after the 3 hour race and we hosted a “soak your own” party last night with 5 other families who all brought various fruit soaked in tequila, vodka, bourbon, coconut rum, etc. my Irish whiskey walnuts were pretty good, everyone seemed to enjoy them. Might have overdone it but good times had by all. Probably affected HRV though.

What do y’all do with the information? The training status shows that I’m well rested - but that’s probably because I didn’t have the watch for the race 🤷
