Oh, I disappeared from here almost all together. Back when I first found you guys I was starting to get into shape and eventually went from about 240 all the way down to about 192 and got into the best shape I had been in since high school. But over the last 2 years, I totally fell off the wagon and, by the mid/end of June, was all the way back up to almost 240 and in as bad of shape as I have ever been.

But I committed to trying to change things again. Over the last 8 weeks, I have slowly built myself back up to running 4x a week and about 5 miles per outing. Longest run was this past Saturday when I went 7 miles. I'm down about 14 pounds and just trying to build good habits and enjoy myself out there. I have no expectations right now, just trying to make good choices. The final kick in the pants to get moving again was @tri-man 47 's updates on his progress. Dude just went through hell and back and was out running longer and faster than I could think of doing. Total inspiration to quit being a fat, lazy, old man - I mean, compared to him I'm still a spring chicken. But he is the baddest of BMF's there ever was.
Aw …thank you!

Update: I finished chemo yesterday, so no more treatments. I can start to rebuild healthy cells and focus on my conditioning without the ups and downs (which actually weren’t too bad) of chemo. I also had an MRI this morning, and everything looked great! I’ll get an MRI every two months and deal with the reemergence of the glioma when it chooses to reappear. Statistically, the median survival rate would be about eighteen months from this point. I want to be one of the one percenters who make it to ten years. I’m totally at peace with whatever unfolds (well, assuming I can get to Boston in April).

@ChiefD doesn't do trips to the farmer's market anymore?

No shovel reports?

Well, my land is my farmers market now. Currently growing:

Green beans
Green peppers
Peas
Tomatoes
Corn
Strawberries
Asparagus
Apples
Cucumber
Zucchini
Yellow Squash
Blueberries

So I've been busy.

I really need to do an update with pics. You guys would cream at the additions to my shovel collection.

You guys make me sad. I'm running just to run over here and get in shape but makes me sad this goes weeks without anything being posted. But what are you going to do? I have now run more this year than any year since 2022, which isn't saying much. I mean if I can keep up what I'm doing recently for about 2 or 3 more weeks, I will have run more this year than the previous 2 years combined so. And, if I can stay "on the wagon" until the end of the year, I should have more miles this year than the previous 3 years combined.
No 10ks here, except after a swim and bike. Rocket man on Sunday should be fun and HOT. I’ve been enjoying mentoring the tri group and training for IM Florida.
My strava is still busy, I just don’t talk about my training or races much.
I did win the 40-49 AG at wet dog, the somewhat old guys (masters) group at mountain lakes and 40-49 AG at the Huntsville sprint.

I did sign up for two running races - Rocket City half and the Blue heron 50k in April. I’m trying to decide if running the oak barrel half the week before the 50k would be totally Or just mildly stupid.

oh yeah la di da gian gave me a hose recommendation and i gave him a ton of **** about it and now that i have used it i kinda like it a little so now he’s strutting around like a cardinal in heat but the thing works and stretches out 200 feet with no kinks and pretty good water flow but other then that it doesn’t make me feel all that good……..

Dumb question from a guy who doesn't garden. Are any of these veggies harder or easier to grow? Or just plant, weed, feed, and water and it all just happens?

I'm running a lot. I'm trying to go from couch to BQ.

Goal race is Chicago Marathon. Then I'll lead pace groups at Marine Corps and NYC a few weeks after Chicago.

It really depends.

Green beans - pretty easy. Just plant, water, and watch them grow. I have beans coming out of my dickhole right now. Have already frozen about 12 bags for winter.

Green peppers - depends on weather. They really need full sun and lots of sunny hot days. That's a challenge up here, so I've been watering with Miracle Grow. That helps a lot. I've had enough peppers to keep us going.

Peas - pretty easy. Just water.

Tomatoes - pretty easy. Just water. There are people that trim them and such, but I don't bother. I'm about to be up to my anus in tomatoes. People also put pesticides on sometimes for bugs, but I don't. At least I haven't had to this year and don't plan to.

Corn - so far so good. Water and watch em grow. This is my first year for growing them so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Strawberries - easy. Just give them room to spread out, because they will spread out. New crop this year so probably won't get a lot til next year. We've had a handful this year to eat. Still very new plants.

Asparagus - easy. Usually takes a few years after planting for you to be able to eat them. There was already some there so we could eat those, but I planted 8 more clusters. Four are 1 year readiness and four are 2 year readiness. I'll keep planting more every year. One of our favorite veggies.

Apples - easy so far. There were three producers already on the land. We planted three more trees this year. They will be ready in about 5 years.

Cucumber - easy. Just keep watered,

Zucchini - same as cukes

Yellow Squash - same as cukes

Blueberries - jury is out. I planted 3 small plants, so I'm not expecting anything til next year. But they are growing way slower than I expected. I may need to move them to get them really going before winter.

My plan for food to freeze for winter:

Beans
Corn
Mixed veggies - these will be beans, corn, carrots, and peas. Stuff we can mix in soups or just have as a side for dinner
Peas
Diced tomatoes for sauces and such
Strawberries
Asparagus

The goal is to have at least something available all year to eat.

I never went with this much variety but back in Kansas everything we planted grew.
Here in Alabama? Beans, cucumbers and tomatoes are the only thing we’ve had success with.

Oh I see you in Strava. I see plenty of you on Strava, which is very helpful. I was speaking of this thread specifically. I love this thread.

I know I should be secure enough to not pay attention to it, but it sure was nice to have Garmin's race predictor not tell me I suck after my run last night, which it had basically been doing after every summer run. 60s and drizzle for the win!

We are getting morning temps in the 50s next week. It will certainly be welcome during this hot and humid summer although I’m already feeling the internal pressure to run faster.

Did my annual 29K/1,000m race today. Went well, was hoping for a sneaky PR, but didn't happen. 2nd AG. I'm definitely running tons of volume, but I think I'm doing it all wrong. Need to revert to my old approach. Just running 17K six days a week isn't giving me enough easy/short days, and also no long days. I used to really mix it up, and clearly that's needed again.

Nice to see @The Iguana keeping the habit up, and as-awesome-as-anything-can-ever-be to see @tri-man 47 through his chemo with a #BMF attitude and a glioma that knows it's going to get its *** kicked if it tries to come back to town.

You are a total badass. And I’m still sick of having to hear all about the amazing tri-man from Mrs APK. ;)

Yesterday morning was glorious for a race day. Very light rain for a while and temps in the 70s, warmed up a bit before we finished but stayed overcast for most of the race.
Due to the recent rain the TVA didn’t lower the dam to a low flow, so the swim was cut from 1500M to 1k, less up stream but still 200ish yards into the strong current wasn’t fun.
I’m still a slow swimmer but my bike ended at 22mph for 8th fastest in the 3 years with this course. Run averaged sub 8, so I’m fairly happy overall. 7th overall, won the AG. Which makes 3 AG victories plus a masters win out of 4 tri’s this summer. Dropped 15 minutes from last year. Best guess, 8 of that was just the swim change, 7 due to better fitness.

And then when I got home my rear tire is flat, and I can’t get the dang tire off. So I might miss this week’s ride.
I’m considering buying better wheels, not a disc - the wind in Florida is supposed to be brutal But carbon.

Ran right through a giant cloud of marijuana smoke on last night's run, courtesy of some local youths, so that was a first. Not sure if it helped or hurt the last 2 miles.

Hey Chicago guys -- Sunday evening (October 12), post marathon, I'm guessing @bushdocda and I and our better halves will likely be out celebrating or mourning our race performance. If anyone wants to join us, let us know. It is a holiday weekend so hopefully no work for many of you on Monday.

Sounds good! If I can help with any weekend logistics, let me know.

You know I’ll be rooting for a successful, BQ race for you in particular.

I am running Chicago this year too. Or, at least, I hope to. My heel has been giving me troubles when I run both long and fast so we’ll see how the next month goes.

Knowing how I feel after a marathon, I know I’ll want to head back long before the evening. However, I’d love to see you and @bushdocda at some point pre or post race or maybe even at the Expo Saturday.

Ok, so let's get the collective thoughts on which option would you choose/is less "creepy" (and I fully acknowledge those may not be the same for you).

I'm doing the walk/run thing as I "train" for this NYC thing. So, I'm practicing it on my runs and I've settled into a 4:1 ratio where I run 4 minutes then walk 1. It's going fine and I like sticking with it.

Today, I'm running on a paved trail near my girl's activity and, it's not terribly busy but it's basically a paved path that goes 2 miles on a levee. There's the occasional biker, some walkers, walkers with their dogs, and occasional runners. I might come across someone every 5 minutes or so, so really not busy. It's also wide open and you can see pretty far in either direction.

As fate would have it, and usually seems to be the case, twice today I was coming up on a walker right as my 4 minutes of running is about to end. By the watch, I would basically start walking as I stood next to them.

Which do you choose? Do you stop running right before you get to them and walk behind them for a minute and then start running again?

Or, do you run just past them, start walking right in front of them for a minute, then start running.

Both felt wrong, but I wasn't going to deviate from my 4:1 ratio, so I had to choose both times.

If it matters, the first time was a group of 4 females walking together. The second time was one woman walking her dog at a quickish pace.

If they are 7’s or better you pick up your pace and blaze past like a ****ing stallion.

You and I both know those days are long gone for both of us.

Me personally, I probably would have run an extra minute or so to get clearly past, then walked an extra 12 seconds to try to salvage the ratio. But I probably modify my plans based on passersby more than I should. For instance, if somebody is running the same direction as me but slower, I'll usually either modify my route or cross the street before passing because I don't want them to think I'm trying to big shot them or anything like that. This is also on sparsely populated trails - if it was one of the areas frequented by lots of runners I'd go about by business normally.

Well, yeah, but that isn't as fun and then I have nothing to post about in here.

So, assuming your plan isn't an option.....

Well then it’s pretty obvious that you stop running at 4 minutes, which just happens to place you behind them. Then you m immediately change your training plan to the much more data-based and proven-effective 4:30 model. Keep that heart rate in Zone 2 and crush your next race.

Both felt wrong, but I wasn't going to deviate from my 4:1 ratio, so I had to choose both times.
Wait, you don’t pass a slower runner and derisively tell them “you really suck at this.” Because that’s what people are doing to me as I try to build back up.

I was motivating you!
