Raiders | R. Moss gives reason for drops

Published Mon Nov 13 10:36:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders WR Randy Moss gave a reason for why he has dropped so many passes this year. "Maybe because I'm unhappy and I'm not too excited about what's going on, so my concentration and focus level tends to go down sometimes when I'm in a bad mood. So all I can say is that if you put me in a good situation and make me happy, man, you get good results," said Moss.

What is everyone's opinion on this?

so, he's posturing already for a trade.

As a Moss owner, my opinion is that he is a no good thug and doesn't deserve the talent he's been blessed with.

Got an offer tonight for Chamers/Randy Moss for Fitz in one of my dynasty leagues. I turned it down without even blinking.

Seen it all before, heard it all before. Nothing new here at all.

Moss was scheduled to be on KNBR in San Francisco between 6-7 pacific time tonight. Some sort of award was being named for him, and I guess someone thought it would be good PR for him to be on. But he stood them up, so they spent the hour ripping him instead.

Best part was that they played the Bigbottom/Couch Potato song to start the hour. I hope Moss was listening somewhere. :D

wow, what a piece of crap. I wish he would just get cut and then have to pay back his signing bonus as well, for conduct unbecomming or for just admitting that he is throwing the season. that is all some guys understand is money, so lets make it about money.

If he's not excited on Sunday, what does he do the rest of the week during practice? I can't imagine what a Raider practice must look like!

'Cause you're in a bad mood, you're taking us down

You're playing so bad you can't turn it around

You're dropping the ball, the numbers don't lie

Your attitude sucks and you don't even try

You're in a bad mood, the camera don't lie

You say you don't care and you really don't mind

You're in a bad mood... you're in a bad mood

Randy is the man. All you haters are just jealous of this millionaire.

Seriously, the situation in Oakland is bad and it's got nothing to do with him. It's an inept organization that is just a few years removed from a superbowl. The game has passed Art Shell by - I knew watching the first game that with that pathetic line you have got to move your QB and throw screens and short, quick passes. Here we are in week 9 and same old crap.

Lastly, Walters is an idiot. There should be one player he's looking for each time he steps back to pass. I mean nothing is going to make this guy look good than throwing to Moss. How in the heck do you not throw to him again and again and again. Geez. And why isn't the whole Raider offensive philosophy around getting Moss the ball - worked well in Minnesota (say what you will, they were competitie and that was with Mike Tice as coach).

I'm done.

I have always argued for moss as being the most talented receiver ever. So...I will still defend him. It would be very very hard to get amped for a game when your team as a whole doesn't care, you know you probably wont win the game and that you have about a 5% chance to make the playoffs, and when you have andrew walter throwing you the ball. I love this guy and believe that given the right situation he could still be by far and away the best receiver in the league.

That being said, I traded him week 6 in my dynasty league this year for javon walker straight up. Quite happy about that, too.

Can anyone blame him? They got him Aaron Brooks in the offseason, a QB for laughs each time he throws an INT, then they go get him a OC who 10 months ago was fixing someone his omelette. Who's his coach? I don't hate Art, but he sure doesn't excite anybody around him. Their OL can't make a decent block, their supporting WR's a joke...

Moss would make a great careerbuilder.com adv.

Can anyone blame him? To answer that, I guess it depends on what integrity means to someone. First, he is paid millions of dollars for the privilege of playing a game for a living. Those millions exist because there are expectations that he perform at maximum effort, regardless of surrounding circumstances. What if you went to a play and the lead performer meandered around and mumbled his lines because he wasn't in a good mood, instead of giving you and everyone else the best consistent performance every night as is expected? Would you be glad you paid for that performance?

In any walk of life, we have to decide what we stand for, whether we are part of a solution or part of the problem. Moss clearly has decided to be part of the problem. As team captain and supposed star, when the going is tough a person with character should be fully committed to making those around him better, not using them as an excuse to quit. As a performer, he has a duty to those who pay him - the fans - to give full effort.

If Moss were giving full effort and the surrounding talent, coaching, etc. still resulted in losses, I'd feel bad for him. But Moss is a quitter who has decided not to give full effort - to not lay out for balls any more, to drop passes, to have alligator arms - and those who defend him on the basis of surrounding talent are ignoring this.

I don't see Moss offering to give back any of those millions since his bad mood is causing him to underperform. Please don't defend this guy. He doesn't deserve it.

Shell responds to Moss. Seriously, we might actually see the entire team (Walter, Porter, Moss etc) revolt before the season is over on Shell. What a joke this organization is.

Raiders HC Shell mulls QB switch

Written by: Associated Press ¦ 11/13/2006

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -Art Shell took issue with quarterback Andrew Walter's criticisms of the Oakland Raiders' struggling offense and appears ready to make a switch back to Aaron Brooks.

Walter took shots at coordinator Tom Walsh's offense after Sunday's 17-13 loss to Denver, saying there is not enough ``depth'' in the playbook, the offense was too predictable, and that the team needed to utilize more quick-developing plays than five- and seven-step drops.

That didn't sit well with Shell, who has fiercely defended Walsh all season long from criticisms that he is out of touch after being away from the NFL for more than a decade.

``You have to be accountable for what you do,'' Shell said Monday. ``To start making statements about what's in and what's not in, then you need to take a hard look at what's there. Obviously, I don't want to get into a contest with a young man but for him to come out and say those things, (that's) totally off-base as far as I'm concerned.''

Walter was unavailable for comment Monday, but had plenty to say after Oakland's latest loss.

``We need to make it more complex,'' Walter said, referring to the Raiders' playbook. ``I'd like more swing routes, flat routes, short stuff. There are certain things I'd like to see.''

Shell did not respond to criticisms of the offense and coaching staff earlier in the season from receiver Randy Moss, saying everyone can ``speak their mind.'' But the coach wasn't as accepting of the comments from Walter, who is in his second year in the NFL.

``When you speak out, you need to know what you're talking about when you make those statements,'' Shell said. ``You can speak out. I've said that before. Guys are capable of speaking out but when you start going out and you start airing your laundry in public, then you've got to have some accountability for that, too.''

Shell said Walter's comments wouldn't play into the decision about who would start at quarterback Sunday at Kansas City, but he appears ready to give the job back to Brooks.

Brooks began the season as the starter before straining a pectoral muscle in the first quarter of the second game. The injury took longer to heal than the Raiders originally thought, giving Walter an extensive opportunity to prove he was ready to be an NFL starter.

Brooks returned to practice two weeks ago and said Monday he's ready to play in games as soon as the coaches give him the go-ahead.

``I'm going to take a hard look at it and see where we are with him,'' Shell said. ``He's been throwing the last couple of weeks. I thought last week he threw the ball a whole lot better. ... I think he's very close. We'll see how he goes.''

Brooks, who was just 6-for-14 for 68 yards before getting hurt, said the problems on the NFL's worst offense are more about execution than play calling. Brooks has made 84 starts in his career and said he believed he gives the team a better chance to win than the inexperienced Walter does.

``I think we have a greater chance,'' Brooks said. ``I possess some skills that with my experience gives us a greater chance.''

Walter has shown sporadic signs of success, but needs to do much more to overcome a poor offensive line. Walter has completed just 48.1 percent of his passes and thrown only three touchdowns and nine interceptions. He has also lost seven fumbles and been sacked 40 times.

Walter said he has asked for changes in the offense and the coaches have sometimes listened to his suggestions.

Shell said Walsh's offense runs many of the same plays as other teams in the NFL and does not call more deep drops than many other teams. He also said that the players have more say on what plays get called than he has seen in the past.

Shell also was upset about comments made by Moss, who blamed his frequent dropped passes this season on a loss of focus because he's not happy with what's going onaround the team.

``My concentration and focus level tends to go down sometimes when I'm in a bad mood,'' Moss said. ``So all I can say is if you put me in a good situation and make me happy, man, you get good results.''

Shell said he ``hates'' to hear comments like that. :loco:

``You're paid to play a game that you've played for many years and that you love and once you hit the field, you compete,'' Shell said. ``That's the way I see it.''

people really need to lose the "he makes millions" stuff as an excuse

when players are out on the field, it doesnt matter about how much money they make. Moss clearly wants to win, and he's not doing that in Oakland. He is not going about it the best way and is also clearly dogging it at certain points, but there are PLENTY of other guys in the league doing the exact same thing (Not that that makes it Ok), and it doesnt matter how much money they are making. Guys get discouraged on bad teams and half _ _ _ it. It's been like that forever, its just sad with Moss because he has the ability to be an all time great.

To bad Moss didn't bring up the fact that he is getting fat and old. Dude has put on some weight the past two years, slowed him down, decreased hops, can't get away. I own him this year but watching him run on the field he is not the same guy and noticibly heavier. Unless he is dedicated to an offseason program this year to get back into form then I will avoid him next year. Just my .02

It's called being a professional. He should wear a ski mask when he goes to pick up his paycheck.
I imagine that even an organization in such a dismal state as the Raiders has direct deposit available. ;) If I was Davis, I would sit his cancerous butt and let him hold for PAT attempts on the scout team. You can't condone that attitude in front of the rest of the team and the fans paying a boatload to watch the product.

Fixed

I couldn't give him away before. Now I'm really stuck w/him
I can't believe I unloaded him. I sent Jason Taylor (the week before he blew up for sacks and a TD) + Moss for Andre Johnson. Hated losing Taylor but I upgraded considerably with AJ.

I traded Moss for Deion Branch....and am glad. Branch may not be a "star" but he is consistent and I'd take my chances with the SEA offense over OAK anyday.

Two questions:

Anyone think Moss can rebound with Brooks at QB?

Anyone try this same line with their boss today?

I'd answer, but I'm in a bad mood. So it's your fault I'm not answering. Maybe if you do something to put me in a good mood I'll consider it.

I offered Coles for Moss today in two dynasy leagues and was turned down in both. People still believe. To answer Wannabee above, yes, I think he has lots of value going forward if Brooks starts. Even with Walter, Moss has had 5+ catches in 4 of his last 6 games. If not for all the drops plus poor throws plus sacks, his numbers woulf be right where they always were. Wherever he is next year (here or elsewhere), it can't be as bad as 2006 has been so far.

If you have the pleasure of owning him, I think this is the move that you hope changes his mood.... Early on it seemed Moss was calling for Walters over Brooks, so it will be interesting to see if Brooks can get over that and utilize Moss... You can almost swap Moss and TO in and out of these comments... If you get them involved and throw to them over and over they will be happy and will have success.. I think TO has a better work ethic (when on the field) but both demand the ball and I agree with the post early that states getting them the ball anyway they can will help oaklands chances of winning...With the fantasy playoffs upcoming, would be nice if my 2nd round pick decided to start playing football and try to catch the ball...

Sadly, I have Moss in half (3) of my leagues. I thought he was huge value in the 3rd in 12/16 team leagues. So, I do understand, unfortunately.
