Ray Rice's Domestic Abuse Presser Sends Wrong Message (1 Viewer)

How does anyone watch First Take? Honestly. Good for Michelle Beadle for calling out Stephen A though.
Bolded the answer for you...otherwise it would be considered torture to show it in Gitmo.
She wasn't on First Take. She called him out on Twitter:

I'm thinking about wearing a miniskirt this weekend…I'd hate to think what I'd be asking for by doing so @stephenasmith. #dontprovoke

— Michelle Beadle (@MichelleDBeadle) July 25, 2014

It's not about him, then. It's about you, and here's what I mean by that. We keep talking about the guys. We know you have no business putting your hands on a woman. I don't know how many times I got to reiterate that. But as a man who was raised by women, see I know what I'm going to do if somebody touches a female member of my family. I know what I'm going to do, I know what my boys are going to do. I know what, I'm going to have to remind myself that I work for the Worldwide Leader, I'm going to have to get law enforcement officials involved because of what I'm going to be tempted to do. But what I've tried to employ the female members of my family, some of who you all met and talked to and what have you, is that again, and this what, I've done this all my life, let's make sure we don't do anything to provoke wrong actions, because if I come, or somebody else come, whether it's law enforcement officials, your brother or the fellas that you know, if we come after somebody has put their hands on you, it doesn't negate the fact that they already put their hands on you. So let's try to make sure that we can do our part in making sure that that doesn't happen. Now you got some dudes that are just horrible and they're going to do it anyway, and there's never an excuse to put your hands on a woman. But domestic violence or whatever the case may be, with men putting their hands on women, is obviously a very real, real issue in our society. And I think that just talking about what guys shouldn't do, we got to also make sure that you can do your part to do whatever you can do to make, to try to make sure it doesn't happen. We know they're wrong. We know they're criminals. We know they probably deserve to be in jail. In Ray Rice's case, he probably deserves more than a 2-game suspension which we both acknowledged. But at the same time, we also have to make sure that we learn as much as we can about elements of provocation. Not that there's real provocation, but the elements of provocation, you got to make sure that you address them, because we've got to do is do what we can to try to prevent the situation from happening in any way. And I don't think that's broached enough, is all I'm saying. No point of blame.
:lmao:

What a massive, massive tool. I hope he gets fired, but only because this moron should not have a job in the first place. Yelling is not journalism.

He's in full begging for forgiveness mode

My series of tweets a short time ago is not an adequate way to capture my thoughts so I am using a single tweet via Twitlonger to more appropriately and effectively clarify my remarks from earlier today about the Ray Rice situation. I completely recognize the sensitivity of the issues and the confusion and disgust that my comments caused. First off, as I said earlier and I want to reiterate strongly, it is never OK to put your hands on a women. Ever. I understand why that important point was lost in my other comments, which did not come out as I intended. I want to state very clearly. I do NOT believe a woman provokes the horrible domestic abuses that are sadly such a major problem in our society. I wasn’t trying to say that or even imply it when I was discussing my own personal upbringing and the important role the women in my family have played in my life. I understand why my comments could be taken another way. I should have done a better job articulating my thoughts and I sincerely apologize.

Accepted. Fine.

And the dumb get dumber. Even Bayless stopped agreeing with him when he went there.
I've never understood this. We counsel people to protect themselves from certain situations and places all the time. But there's been this recent "don't tell your daughters how to dress, tell your sons not to rape" angle. Well, I'm going to do both, thank you very much. Because no matter how much we tell our sons not to rape, some of them are going to do it. And I want our daughters thinking before they put themselves into certain situations.

I'm not sure I understand the outrage...I cannot stand Stephen A...but am I wrong in taking his point to be: "If you're with someone who is abusive...get away from them?"

How is that not a valid point? She gets knocked out by this guy and then marries him.

It's not an excuse for the ******* doing the beating but you can't leap into a tiger's cage over and over and not expect to get bit. Or get bit and then do it again and again...without a reasonable person saying, "Hey...how about you stop jumping in that cage?!"

He didn't say "leave the relationship" he said we need to address the "elements of provocation."

I'm a bit foggy on remembering the details. What did Rice's fiance/wife do to provoke Rice to knock her out?
I'm not sure, but Ray Rice has gone out of his way to say that they both have learned their lesson from this ordeal every time he has talked about it, so it must have been a doozy.

Was the video of what happened in the elevator ever released?
No. Some people think she slipped on some ice and hit her head even though the charge was increased from assault to aggravated assault once the grand jury watched it.
I haven't followed this at all. Didn't know any of the stuff you just said. It's pretty crazy the NFL thought 2 games would not cause a #### storm.
FatunclejerryBuss doesn't want to jump to conclusions even though an Assault charge was later upped to aggravated assault. 5 games for free tattoos. 2 games for knocking your woman out cold.

Before he was even in the NFL.

Don't know what the unclejerry comment refers to.I was assuming the elevator showed Rice getting wailed on, he pushes her off and she slams her head or something. Crazy that NFL screwed this up so bad, they are usually so PR savy.

Haven't been online today at all and just seeing all this Stephen Smith stuff. Normally this is right up his ally, trolling for ratings. He has really stepped in it on this one though. Lucky he has the weekend for the story to die down.

Then why is he not in jail and why are we talking this football suspension BS? Does he have the DA in his pocket? I don't know what happened, please crucify me for that statement.

The DA is a huge Ravens fan.

So he overrates Joe Flacco too.

Deadspin said the DA kept Rice and Flacco in his keeper league this year.

Ah...gotcha...so he's saying, "Stop antagonizing this abusive guy." Hmmm, OK...yea, that's valid but definitely putting the blame squarely on the victim. He's dumb.

"Elements Of Provocation" would be a good name for a band. Or a fantasy football team.

Holy crap. What a POS. Dude should get a full year or more.

Love the way he's dragging her around like that - what a ####### moron.

Horrible. If the league doesn't suspend him longer, the Ravens should. What is going to be really sickening is all the Raven fans that will cheer him when he comes back in Week 3.

The Ravens need to cut him.

If he does play in week 3, I don't believe the Ravens fans will cheer him. Not after seeing that video.

I have a really hard time thinking Goddell and the Raven's execs are viewing the video for the first time by logging on to TMZ, seems to me both would have already viewed it.

@bomani_jones: nfl can find out every girl a draft prospect slept with, but its band of former feds cant get that tape? tell me more, rog.

:goodposting:

I have to admit that I was "that guy" who saw that video and immediately though, "crap, my fantasy team is going to suffer now." Yup, I will throw myself under that bus. I grabbed him much later than he should have gone and figured he would be a stud when he came back.

But I don't see how the NFL allows him on the field this year. Yeah we all know domestic violence is sickening yet it very rarely is ever public for all to see - that is the hardest part of prosecuting it and coming up with a legal system that can handle it. It still has privacy protecting it. But now that this video is out there - this guy just lost any female support of any kind. I'm hearing from my league mate that lives in Baltimore that they are screaming about this... he needs to be put to pasture for this and quickly. Goodell just needs to call DeMaurice Smith and tell him he's done for the year and if you want to sue the league feel free but he isn't wearing a uniform this year and we can figure out next year in a few months. Do the Adam Silver and just get it over with.

Goodell might have to do more than even that -- I believe (no evidence) that he saw this exact tape and THEN handed down two games. I don't know how these kind of "bad PR" "forced" resignations work ... but Goodell has to do some fancy dancing to stay on as NFL commissioner.

Of course, the league's owners seem to back Goodell a ton ... maybe the party that gets strong-armed into "doing something" will actually end up being the Ravens themselves. Any easy-top-let-go scapegoats over there? I assume Ozzie Newsome is untouchable ... maybe some team PR guys or something?

Am I the only one who expected the video to be worse? We already knew he knocked her out. My level for disgust for him hasn't changed. I don't understand why a video of it causes that much more an outrage. What did you guys think happened before you saw the video? A really hard noogie?

I think there is a better chance the Ravens build a Ray Rice statue to go next to the Ray Lewis statue than Goodell being removed.

Goodell certainly can't simply be shamed into stepping down on his own accord. Someone has to take the axe-fall here -- might be a lesser Ravens exec or something. Gotta be someone, though.

the spit in the face was a bit much

I don't know if Goodell loses his job. I guess it's possible. I don't think he should regardless. So he didn't suspend a guy long enough. It is really glaring now and they took some bad pub for it but I'm pretty sure there were no boycotts of week 1 because of it. I am going to assume that Baltimore will be dealing with a lot of crap now if Rice is in a uniform.

And I don't think the video was worse than anything that is the unfortunate norm in domestic violence cases. It's not that it is so horrid - it's that it is now visual. It's the media age we live in. Donald Sterling had been saying that stuff for years and no one cared. It got recorded and played on the news where casual observers saw it and non-sports people started invaded the old white guy network of owners and hammering them in public and sponsors grabbed some distance quick to make sure they didn't suffer any PR problems. That's what happens these days. You do something bad you get punished most likely. You do something bad that gets recorded so Jane housewife sees or hears it and it becomes the talk of her mom group? You got problems.

yes/no

It's worse cause its in your face and you have to deal with it.

You hear of murders on the news everyday. You see a video of one on the news and it sparks outrage.

I think some people were holding out some hope that his fiance was going bat crazy ghetto on him.

Im talking the wigs came off, took off her earings and pulled out a shiv from her purse and lunged at Rice.

Rice, in a last second desperation to shield his major organs from the shiv raised and elbow and the enormous wind effect his elbow created caused a sonic boom type of effect that knocked her back and the back of her head hits the wall and she drops.

I got carried away but you get the point

It's getting kind of embarrassing to be a Ravens fan. And now Ray Lewis is going to talk about this on ESPN tonight. Like that won't be hideously cringe-worthy.

The Ravens can't cut him, because that would put them $1.5 M over the cap, but they should come out right now and say he will never play for them again. Enough already. But the owner is such a jock-sniffer that I'm sure such an action will be impossible for him.

One really sad part of all this is that Rice really seemed to be a good guy. He was involved in anti-bullying stuff and my 10-year-old daughter loved him. She thought it was amazing that someone so little could be better than the huge guys he played against. He was kind of like a cartoon character, and her only jersey is a Ray Rice one. It's in the trash -- and it's been a chance to talk with her about being respected by boys/men and never tolerating any abusive behavior. But it still sucks.
