Ray Rice's Domestic Abuse Presser Sends Wrong Message (2 Viewers)

Am I the only one who expected the video to be worse? We already knew he knocked her out. My level for disgust for him hasn't changed. I don't understand why a video of it causes that much more an outrage. What did you guys think happened before you saw the video? A really hard noogie?
Expected it to be worse? Not really..it was actually worse than I thought.

I have never hit a woman. Never will. Don't condone it at all. But I was expecting this to be a lot worse with all the uproar.

First, she's physically attacking him outside the elevator and inside the elevator. Then he does something totally stupid as a reaction. Stupid. Definitely suspend able and light jail time. But I was expecting him to be hitting her multiple times or look like the aggressor.

I will say he takes this a bit too casually. Looks like he's done it before. And for that reason alone I would have suspended him way more than 2 games.

You may now begin killing me for my opinion.

I agree, it doesn't change much for me. I do understand how it adds more outrage to the public perception though, and I know ESPN is going to milk it for all it's worth this week.I drafted him in one league hoping he could be an RB2/flex at some point this season, so I'm hoping he and the Ravens can spin this correctly so he takes the field week 3 as originally planned.

As to the larger question of domestic violence...meh, I hope he gets counseling but I can't say I'm wasting too much energy hating him. This stuff happens every day and he happens to be a public figure caught on video. The whole media/social media cluster#### is predictable and kind of boring.

ETA: There's not a snowball's chance in hell Goodell loses his job.

the spit in the face was a bit much
I didn't see the spit thing and don't think I heard or believed the self defense angle.

I wonder if this is the first time Mrs. Rice has seen the video. She might have a different memory of it.

Hypothetically: I wonder what kind of on-the-job gaffe Goodell would have to pull before he'd either resign voluntarily or be forced out. I guess if he ever directly costs the league's owners some money somehow

It's getting kind of embarrassing to be a Ravens fan. And now Ray Lewis is going to talk about this on ESPN tonight. Like that won't be hideously cringe-worthy.

The Ravens can't cut him, because that would put them $1.5 M over the cap, but they should come out right now and say he will never play for them again. Enough already. But the owner is such a jock-sniffer that I'm sure such an action will be impossible for him.

One really sad part of all this is that Rice really seemed to be a good guy. He was involved in anti-bullying stuff and my 10-year-old daughter loved him. She thought it was amazing that someone so little could be better than the huge guys he played against. He was kind of like a cartoon character, and her only jersey is a Ray Rice one. It's in the trash -- and it's been a chance to talk with her about being respected by boys/men and never tolerating any abusive behavior. But it still sucks.
Darrin Sproles, MJD, etc.....there's several other small guys she can root for.

race or kiddie pron
not necessarily in that order
I meant messing up something that's actually in his line of day-to-day commissioner duties -- something racial could count, but underage pron wouldn't.

Just odd that he has complete carte blanche over the judgement and punishment of NFL players in the sense that he's considered infallible inside NFL circles. But then, Goodell takes the flak for this kind of stuff, and his 32 employers get a pass. So maybe Goodell is actually doing his job to a T

I think he's handled this situation pretty well. Something illegal or really offensively politically incorrect would do it, but he's not the type. He's probably in it for the long haul, meaning until he's a senior citizen.

'Fox & Friends' Hosts Really Don't Get The Problem With Ray Rice Hitting His Wife

The 'Fox & Friends' co-hosts responded pretty much exactly how you'd expect them to on Monday after video was released of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice punching his wife in an elevator.

Without giving many details about the assault, the hosts quickly began comparing the incident to other cases of domestic violence among celebrities. But rather than putting any kind of blame on the abuser, the co-hosts pointed the finger at the women.

"She still married him!" Steve Doocy said of Rice's wife, Janay Palmer.

"Rihanna went back to Chris Brown right after [he assaulted her]," Brian Kilmeade said. "A lot of people thought that was a terrible message."

Doocy compared the video to the elevator incident between Jay Z and Solange. To which Kilmeade then-- you guessed it-- defended Jay Z for not hitting back.

"I think the message is, take the stairs," Kilmeade concluded.

No. That's really not the message.

Doocy then chimed in once more.

"The message is, when you're in an elevator, there's a camera."

Nope. Still not the message.

Watch the video for the full clip on Fox News.

Looked to me like she probably got knocked out when she hit the railing in the elevator. Also looked like he hit her twice.

That morning crew on Fox are such complete idiots, this is no surprise at all.

I don't understanding the hand-wringing. This video is basically what I expected to see. Of course the league and/or team should punish Rice more harshly, but that was true before the video surfaced.

But I was expecting this to be a lot worse with all the uproar.

...

Definitely suspend able and light jail time.
I won't kill you for your opinion, but think about these two statements. You think he deserves light jail time. What he got was a two week suspension from his place of employment where he makes millions.

That's why there is "all the uproar".

If the commissioner really wants to make up for his mistake, he should create a salary cap exemption for cutting players who are in violation of the domestic violence provisions of the personal conduct policy.

I think if it gets proven that they saw this video after today saying they didn't, he's done. Of course the league has Peter King et al providing cover and lapping up everything they say as "news" so I'm not sure anyone will really investigate.

If Joe Average would get years in prison for this, so should Ray Rice. There shouldn't be a "Star Athlete Criminal Code" and a "Regular People Criminal Code". The fact there is just means that the peope who have the power to do the right thing have been derelict in their duties -- full stop. At some point, "the right thing" has to trump "athletic ability".

Who is obstructing justice here? Who is preventing Rice from getting the Joe Average treatment ... and can that someone somehow be overridden by someone else?

It's crazy how badly a billion dollar organization botched this. Why were they trying to protect Rice with this ridiculous suspension? He's just another player who can be replaced tomorrow. He's not worth 1/100 of the bad publicity they are getting today.

They always preach "protect the shield" and then they won't even protect the dignity of a woman dating one of these guys. And then they let a video get out of this guy knocking the #### out of his girl when he can be reinstated 5 days later. He can be reinstated this Friday!!

It's ASTONISHING how badly the NFL handled this. I'm not prone to hyperbole but I can't remember any major organization handling anything this badly. Goodell needs new lackeys around him.

Just remember they rolled her out to a press conference to apologize for her actions that night. And the Ravens tweeted it out.

Wait, how would that work? Teams get more salary cap room if they cut a guy for beating his wife than if they cut a guy for some other reason? Wouldn't that make potential abusers more valuable to prospective teams?

An addendum to the Ray Rice coverage:

Earlier this summer a source I trusted told me he assumed the NFL had seen the damaging video that was released by TMZ on Monday morning of Rice slugging his then-fiancée, Janay Palmer, in an Atlantic City elevator. The source said league officials had to have seen it. This source has been impeccable, and I believed the information. So I wrote that the league had seen the tape. I should have called the NFL for a comment, a lapse in reporting on my part. The league says it has not seen the tape, and I cannot refute that with certainty. No one from the league has ever knocked down my report to me, and so I was surprised to see the claim today that league officials have not seen the tape.

I hope when this story is fully vetted, we all get the truth and nothing but the truth.

FWIW, apparently the casino went belly up this weekend and sold the tape off to TMZ as a result. I wouldn't be shocked if NFL security paid to have it destroyed and the casino did this anyway (would be totally deserving).

We don't know if Joe Average would get jail time for a comparable domestic abuse incident.

- Rice has no criminal history

- Rice's wife has testified on his behalf that it was a one-time incident

- Rice's wife has testified on his behalf that he's apologetic

- Rice could argue that it was a heat of passion incident that he wouldn't have committed the act had he time to think it through.

It depends on the judge and prosecutor, but it's plausible that Joe Average would also not receive jail time given the same circumstances. I could see a withheld sentence and probation.

I don't usually follow these stories once they break - I knew of the allegations and the suspension. I just happen to watch the video today as I heard on the TV that they released it. I know you were not addressing me (or folks that didn't really follow the story) with your comments but for some of us we kind of knew about it but actually seeing it was shocking.

We're going to need way better reporter than Peter King on this. Lol. Hopefully deadspin or Charles Robinson is sniffing this out.

What do you mean the average Joe treatment? You think every guy who hits his wife goes to jail? Not even close, I'd bet a low percentage of men who have done this ever see the inside of a cell. Especially on the first offense.

And he is actually getting a greater punishment due to the public nature of the event.

Also what is the deal with all of the calls to ban him from the league? I agree this is a heinous crime and deserves more than a 2-game suspension, but lifetime ban is crazy town, IMO. For Pete's sake, we've had players convicted of manslaughter playing. If, by all accounts, this is a one time thing then he should be punished as such, not have his entire livelihood taken from him.

cool.

The shark move is for him to self-impose a ban. Ask to take a leave from the team for 6-8 more games, and donate his checks to domestic abuse charities.

Do it on tape, and I believe that Joe Average does a few years every time, allowing for state-by-state differences in the law.

Without tape, there no comparison.

If the NFL saw the tape and are lying about it now, that's really really bad, obviously. But if they're telling the truth that they never saw the tape until today, that is bad as well, because then it begs the question, why didn't they see it? I can't think of a plausible reason, other than they didn't want to see it. Like Premier says, this is a royal #### up by the NFL.

But in the end, what the NFL should or should not do does not matter, because the Baltimore Ravens need to kick this guy off the team immediately. And I'm betting they will. The pressure will be too great for any other outcome. This is one of those cases where the public outcry gets louder and louder and louder and maybe initially you think the story can be contained, but it can't. Not after the video. Similar to Don Sterling and his recorded conversation. Everybody knew that Sterling was a racist for years, but the recording did him in.

The video is everything; seeing is believing. As a Steelers fan I can excuse Ben Roethlisberger and still root for him because he says he didn't commit rape, and maybe he didn't; there's no proof. But if there was a video of him committing rape, he would have been kicked off the team immediately and no Steeler fan would have ever rooted for him again.

Jayrod, this is one of the most exceptional athletes in the world hitting a woman and knocking her out. He could have easily killed her. Yes, he deserves to lose his livelihood over this. He should be in jail right now.

And those players convicted of manslaughter shouldn't be playing in the NFL.

I don't really care about what your opinion is, but the fact you see this as her attacking him and then him reacting to that attack is completely ludicrous.

She swiped at him outside the elevator. A swipe that clearly intended no harm beyond insult with no force behind it at all. He then followed her into the elevator and crowded her. Her 'attack' was to at most push him away after which he threw a punch. She then walked towards him, and whether she was about to attack him we'll never know since he flat out cold-cocked her.

It boggles my mind that you would characterize this as her attack and his reaction. This is his attack. She never 'attacked' him.

No, you're incorrect. See my above post regarding mitigating factors.
