RB A.J. Dillon, PHI (1 Viewer)

Great passed him up in my last 4 drafts the last 2 days at great value thanks for nothing Rob. Someone twitter this guy.

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky expects Packers RB MarShawn Lloyd to start season on injured reserve.

Lloyd suffered a hamstring injury during the Packers’ first preseason game against the Broncos. He has since been out and it’s been speculated that he would start on injured reserve to return after Week 4. ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky’s 53-man roster prediction has Lloyd starting the season on IR after missing a large chunk of training camp with a hip issue and much of the preseason with a hamstring issue. AJ Dillon is once again the primary backup in Green Bay with Josh Jacobs leading the way. The Packers could still add a back after teams cut their rosters down if Lloyd is indeed placed on IR.

I think there’s a reasonable chance he doesn’t even make it through training camp.
Maybe, but also a chance he has a rebound season. He was never a fit for LaFleur's offense, that was a disconnect between the GM and HC. He shouldn't have been drafted there. They basically asked a 250 RB to be in an outside zone offense, that relies on quick cuts. Funny part was, LaFleur switched the system up a bit last year to more of a man blocking system (which would have fit Dillon perfectly) in order to better suit Josh Jacobs.

Anyway, I think Dillon has some untaped potential, and I think he could be a salt away the game guy for Philly as to not overwork Barkley (which they may care about more given his new deal) I'd probably rather have Dillon/Shipley than Gainwell as the backup if I were Philly.

I like it as a no expectations flier. Worst case, you have a 250-pound tush pusher.

Eagles do this every year. They sign these vet guys who have failed at other places and have something to prove. Sometimes they work out (Mekhi Bechton) and sometimes they don't (Paris Campbell). They used Shipley in some packages in game 1 against GB in Brazil, then put him on ice for the rest of the season. I always viewed Shipley as a Gainwell replacement. They might have signed Dillon as a guy who would replace Barkley as the lead guy if there was an injury, because much like Gainwell, I don't think Shipley could carry the load, but then use him sparingly during a game where both Barkley and Shipley dress. We'll see.

Is he more of a past name...sort of.... than substance?

I would say that he flashed one snowy day against Tennessee (or somebody like that) and then never showed out again. But it was a good day for him. Yep, it was Tennessee in 2020. 21-124-2

Then his career fell flat for some reason. No wiggle. No giggle. No baking a pie.

This feels like Rashaad Penny all over again.
Could be. Perhaps he could have a minor resurgence like Jordan Howard did with the team several years ago, but I'm not betting on it. In any event, we probably won't see him much anyway except for brief spelling of Saquon (assuming our boy can stay healthy all year).

I think there is a decent chance he has a role on the team. We just lost our best pass catching RB in Gainwell, and its not as if the Eagles run a 1-2 punch RB system.

8.9 yards per catch for his career is kind of insane.

For reference here are other legendary pass catching RBs

LT: 7.6
CMC: 8.5
Marshall Faulk: 9.0

If it doesn't work out? I fully expect the Eagles to be in on the UDFA RB market after the draft this year, but for those that say "this doesn't make sense"

IMO, it just takes a round out of the chamber in the draft having to use a draft pick when the Eagles have more pressing positions to draft for depth with all the losses especially on the defensive side.
