RB Chase Brown, CIN (1 Viewer)

anyone else get the feeling that this guy could be a league winning back this year? Mixon was not great last year (Avg 3.9 yds a carry) , and he is getting older. He also struggled with injuries that last few years. 🤷‍♂️
I don't know about league winner, but I think he's a huge value in dynasty rookie drafts right now. Hoping to snag him in the late 2nd/early 3rd of my upcoming draft.

He's someone I love for redraft. I think he can be really good if something happens to Mixon--whether it be injury or suspension.

Dynasty Wise--I want him, but I don't want to take him too high. Fifth round draft capital--it would make sense for this offense/team with superbowl aspirations to go get a better RB.

I don't think Evans did enough to change his situation with the Bengals. The bigger question for Chase in the near term is if he will be able to move ahead of Trayveon Williams into the Perine role.

Bengals RB Chase Brown played in the team’s preseason Week 3 game against the Commanders while all starters rested.
That seems to indicate that Brown is not in the team’s immediate plans at running back. Trayveon Williams rested while Chris Evans, the leader in the clubhouse for third down duties, was held out with an undisclosed injury. Samaje Perine proved a season ago that the passing down role in this high powered offense bears fantasy utility, making this situation one to monitor over the coming two weeks prior to the start of the regular season.

Made the team, any thoughts from anyone who caught him in action this preseason? They seem to like Trayvon and Evans is still lingering so I am not sure if he has a shot to get any touches this year without injury.

I am not familiar but I don't know if I've heard many tape guys or analytics guys say a kind word about his chances as a prospect.

He looked explosive on a couple of plays in the preseason as mentioned above. Can he pass block for Burrow?

ESPN’s Dan Graziano believes RB Chase Brown could be the Bengals’ RB2 this season.
Brown played behind Chris Evans this preseason, starting the final week while both Evans and Trayveon Williams (ankle) were rested. With Williams targeting a Week 1 return, Brown’s chances at the RB2 role took a hit, but the rookie should see time with Evans in a passing role. Brown led the Bengals RBs with six catches for 32 yards this preseason.

Is there literally any good news here from a dynasty standpoint? I'm fine waiting a year until Mixon hopefully moves on and writing 2023 off as a redshirt year if there are signs he could at least get into a RBBC in 2024, but I'm not feeling it and thinking I should just cash out in some way. Someone who follows the Bengals more than I do convince me otherwise?

It's tough to hold onto him, because even if Mixon went down, hard to know whether Brown/Evans/Williams would be the guy, or it would be some form of RBBC. As for next year, if Mixon moves on, no guarantees that they just won't sign or draft someone else. Not to say Brown can't be the heir apparent, but if you're a dynasty owner, just have to stash him away and pray.

Bengals designated RB Chase Brown (hamstring) to return from injured reserve.

Brown’s 21-day window for return is now opened, as he will begin practicing this week and can be activated as early as Sunday when the Bengals take on the Steelers. The rookie running back had played on only eight offensive snaps before landing on injured reserve, but could have a bit of a second-half breakthrough if the team opts to involve its younger players over the final two months of the season. At 4-6 and with Joe Burrow out for the year, the Bengals aren’t expected to be playing for much at this point. There’s a real chance to Bengals don’t bring back Joe Mixon after this season, which would make Brown worth a deeper look once activated.

With Chase Brown now elevated to the Bengals 53 man roster today, could he get some work replacing Mixon carries?

Not enough to be fantasy worthy I don't think and I say this as a Bengals and Illini homer.

Mixon really has had a hammerlock on carries this year.

Right now they are still playoffs-oriented despite the loss of Burrow. If things don't go well and they are playing out the string at the end of the year then maybe you see more Brown.

Based solely on observation btw.

For dynasty purposes, do you think he’s got a reasonable chance to be the guy next year? Hasn’t shown much but not like there was much of a window either way this year.

Not sure how I feel about Brown in dynasty even. Mainly bc Mixon has one more year and the Bengals still tend to honor contracts as a rule (cap hit for Mixon would be $8+m vs dead cap of like $2.7m next season)

But all the same I can totally still see him becoming the guy at some point based on how he was with my Illini

By the time Mixon is replaced it could be Trayveon Henderson.

They will probably want to give him a some looks at some point in the season but I wouldn't have very high hopes. It's probably not going to be a very good offense and I really don't think he's all that good of a player. But we shall see.

Oh yeah. Went on a buying spree a few days ago, dynasty only though in redraft he's a solid handcuff. Don't have any illusions he's going to replace Mixon this year but for sure think he's someone people should put on their dynasty teams like now.

Through the first six games, Brown had just two carries for six yards and three receptions for seven yards, but the Bengals had a plan to significantly increase his role coming out of the bye, starting with the Week 8 game at San Francisco.

The hamstring injury in the Thursday practice that week put everything on hold.

“He was a guy we were starting to give more to right before it happened,” Taylor said. “I mean, literally right as it happened. That practice had been a good one for him, had given him some opportunities.”

“He’s got quickness, he’s got speed, he’s got explosiveness, things that would complement Joe (Mixon) really well in the run game,” offensive coordinator Brian Callahan said.

“I was looking forward to his time before he got hurt, and I really have the same feeling this time around, too. You hope that he can provide a little bit of a spark and a different style runner than Mixon is.”

0 carries...even Mixon didn't have that many carries tbh.

The question becomes if the emphasis shifts when the last playoff hopes get extinguished.

kinda reminds me of Arian Foster the way he glides- he's not the fastest guy but his stride is really good. I got him in 3rd round dynasty rookie draft, so hopefully next year he has some type of role .

Dynasty guys go get him. He'll be the deal after Mixon. This is just the beginning tonight. Doubts gone.

I saw his long highlight run, which looked like pretty good blocking. Did he look good on his other carries?

He did...he showed some nice zip last night...no targets but they looked like they trusted him in the run game...definitely a step in the right direction if you own him.

This looks like another N. Harris/J. Warren situation.

Unfortunately for Brown, Mixon's two TDs and the victory will keep Mixon in the driver's seat.

That's true, but it would be pretty difficult for Brown to show in a dysfunctional offense. The play of Browning, for now, is a positive, even if it means the Bengals still harbor outside playoff hopes for a bit.

I traded for him a few weeks back thinking he might start getting some carries. I will say this though, from scouting reports I read and followed this offseason, he had some bad habits in college that he needs to fix and clean-up. I do like that he is getting touches and maybe we see some more burn going forward but he still has work to do to be a lead back if he eventually wants to take over from Mixon.

Definitely be excited if you own him in dynasty but Brown still has work to do to be an NFL starter. Hopefully he can take the next step forward eventually.

I don't have the exact stats, but I believe Brown played one third-down play last night. Trayveon Williams had most of the snaps as the passing down back.

I wouldn't say this is a red flag per se, as this is the first true run of play Brown has experienced, but to your point, we'll need to see if the coaching staff trusts him as anything more than a change-of-pace back.

On the positive side, the missed tackles he forced last night were noticeable.

^ Could you please elaborate on the above? I’m curious because I just picked him up in dynasty. TIA !

Williams is definitely their best pass blocker. But hopefully Brown learns over time

I am massively biased as an Illini/Bengals fan.

Foster ran a 4.68 at the combine. Brown ran a 4.43. Foster was also 6'1'' 215 while Brown measured 5'9'' 209. Brown is an athletic freak. I don't disagree with you on how smooth Brown looks with the ball, but Foster isn't a great comp IMO. Foster was bigger, stronger, and had a complete skillset not really measured at the combine that made him an elite NFL running back even after going undrafted. The way Foster could bend around the corner reminded me of a great defensive end turning the corner to go get a QB. Foster's balance at his size was something special. His top end speed was never there, but he still had breakaway TDs because his vision was beyond special.

That said, I don't want to rain on this parade. Brown looked great last night. Quick, fast, good vision. I kind of got Ray Rice vibes watching Brown run, although Brown seems to be bigger, stronger and faster than Ray was at this stage in the game. Brown has a great running back in front of him in Mixon, but Mixon's contract is about up and he'll be 28 next season. It wouldn't surprise me if Brown takes over this backfield as soon as next season. Watching him in college and seeing his combine measurables, I really expected him to go earlier in the draft. The Bengals got a steal IMO, but as Brown's role expands he'll need to prove he can also excel at pass protection. It did impress me they were willing to give him carries when the outcome was very much up in the air, that leads me to believe his ball security in practice has been excellent.

FWIW Waldman compared him to Khalil Herbert which isn't a terrible comparison on styles alone, but I do believe Brown is just a little better than Herbert in about every meaningful area, including his measurables. Brown is bigger, and faster, and stronger. I believe Herbert ran a 4.5 and that was not at the combine, so he was probably closer to the 4.55-4.60. Brown's speed is legit - proven at the combine, he can bench press a truck and he has massive hands which will help with ball security. Although their styles may be similar, I believe Brown's skillset lends itself to a lead back role far more than Herbert's ever did. Pass protection is about the only concern I have here, and it's not because I don't believe he'll be good at it, I just haven't seen him prove it.

Jacob's Ladder references Matt Waldman and Matt has some great insight on rookie RBs. If you can I would search out his podcasts and analysis/draft package on rookie RBs. In particular he mentions some of the things Brown needs to fix to take the next step forward. At times when he feels pressure/pursuit he turns his back to the tacklers rather than put his head down, lower his pads and push forward for a few more yards. Matt Waldman showed this on a number of his posts. Some of his negatives on the scouting report hint at this:

  • Very average power through first contact.
  • Feet deaden when bracing for contact between tackles.
If he can work on this, show that he has power (he's a strong guy) and can push through the hard yards then he could be a more every down player.

As I mentioned before I did trade for this guy in dynasty so I'm hoping he can keep improving. He's great in the open field and has pretty good vision, just some of the decisions need to be cleaned up and push for those extra couple yards.

I love reading Matt's stuff. People get too hung up on his hits and misses vs the meat and potatoes of what he's actually giving you. He compiles a significant amount of measurables, statistics and provides some great insight. Now of course it's just one man's opinion, and in the end, it's one datapoint that you need to use along with all of the other information you turn up, but it is very detailed and points you towards some great threads to pull on. FWIW I disagree on some of the stuff Matt has said about Brown, but Matt did point out how athletic he is. If I see plus pass protection from him down the stretch, I'm all-in on him in 2024. He really does have a sky high ceiling.
