RB D’Andre Swift, CHI (1 Viewer)

Sorry if this is a honda, don't think it's been posted in this thread...108 catches first two years. 14th RB to achieve that total. The other 13 backs who did it:

Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara, Reggie Bush, Saquon Barkley, LaDainian Tomlinson, Le’Veon Bell, Tarik Cohen, Matt Forte, LeSean McCoy, David Johnson, Domanick Williams, Duke Johnson and Ray Rice
Swift is in great company, but for the life of me, I do not know who Domanick Williams is.

D’Andre Swift says Duce Staley has him feeling like the sky is the limit. Lions RB says his personal goals for 2022 are “1,000 (rushing) and 1,000 (receiving).”

He also said he needs to learn the difference between pain and injury. I guess it depends on which side of the bed Staley gets out of.

The 7 missed games his first two years is annoying. Reminds me of Cook in that sense (who seems to always miss 2-5 G every year.)

Last year he suffered a Grade 2 Inguinal Groin Strain the first week of August. He missed all of preseason, was limited in practice until right before first game, and spent 6 more weeks on the injury report (every week he had limited practices.) Finally got to 100% which lasted exactly 4 G, sprained A/C shoulder joint, missed four, came back for the last two. Altogether, on the injury report / limited participant 19/23 weeks.

Personally I think the split with Jamaal was partially driven by the injuries. He had TDs of 43, 57, 63 - they really didn’t get splash chunk plays from anyone else. If he stays healthy, they know he’s their best playmaker.

BIG if though.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the Lions lose their Pro Bowl starting Center-Frank early last season and then the rookie Tackle should be improved going into his 2nd season. I feel the Lions Offense is going to be able to control the clock a lot better than last season. I saw some shades of Goff that looked promising. He's a veteran at this point, 2 organizations and still throws a pretty ball when he's accurate.

Improved OL, healthy TJ Hock at TE would help open up more of the offense. I think Chark will lead the receiving corp easily but understand if everyone isn't as enthused as I am.

We're just about halfway through TC and that's a time when around 25-30 fan bases are feeling optimistic about their chances in the upcoming season.

  • Ragnow only played 4 games because of his "stupid toe" but Evan Brown was adequate. Frank might be our best player, but the drop off was not severe.
  • Penei was the LT the first 6 games bc Decker had thumb surgery, played 9 G at RT, and flipped back over to LT the last couple. Pretty sure the Chargers rookie had a better season, but he's on a good trajectory and I believe Pitts was the only player younger (by a few days.) He seems like a foundational piece that could start for as long as he remains healthy. Great teammate, nasty on the field.
  • Goff has a new OC (Ben Johnson) but it turns out last years TE coach was helping MCDC behind the scene all along after they shelved Anthony Lynn. His last 5 games were efficient, though his aDOT is pathetic and he never threw for 300+ yards after a garbage time stat padder Week 1. He has some speed now (Chark, and eventually Jameson Williams), but I haven't seen any evidence he is on the verge of rediscovering his deep ball passing. That Super Bowl ****ed him up good, was never the same guy afterwards. This will probably be his last year as a starter in the league. Schematically I think they are going to be improved with the fresh set of eyes, BJ is a cerebral innovator who is well respected as one of the brightest young minds in the league.
  • They have invested heavily in the offensive line. From LT to RT: 1st round (16th pick), FA (9th highest positional contract), 1st (20th), 3rd (75th), 1st (7th). 2022 Age: 28, 29, 26, 25, 21. Those guys are good, PFF has them 3rd best in the NFL. Their composite grade was around 67 in pass blocking and 76 in run blocking (for all the offensive OL - Decker and Ragnow missed 21 games.) As a unit, they have zero (0) starts together. But this is unquestionably the strength of the roster, their best positional room.
  • healthy Hock would be a novelty, same for DJ Chark. Between the two of them they have 7 seasons and 30 missed games. TJ plays balls to the wall and probably will always be dinged up because he doesn't have another speed. Way, way below the Top 4 Elite TEs but they will use him in the Slot and on the Boundary more this year.
  • for me, same story with Chark - the best ability is availability.
The defensive line is seeing a similar investment to the offensive line. Hutchinson has a great motor and has looked the part from Day One of OTAs. They drafted 3 other Day Two DL the last two years, and found a great sleeper in ILB Malcolm Rodriguez (6th round) - kid is gonna have the green dot helmet soon if he keeps this up. But overall, the defense is just not there yet. They have below average coverage DBs and desperately need the front 7 to generate pressure. We like the DC but we're not seeing it on the field....yet.

BACK ON TOPIC

D'Andre is a microcosm of the franchise. He has shown flashes of greatness. Through 10 weeks last year he was highly effective, especially in the pass game. They'll line him up all over this year. He is without a doubt their best splash play chunk yardage threat. But he's gotta play through pain and be out there every week (or nearly so.) We'll see.

Texans, had good stats on volume his first two years, over 1K 2x with 22 TDs This was a couple CBAs ago and RBs were still valued, he got a big contract after 2 years.

Y3 was even better - 89 yards rushing per game. Tore up his knee Week 11 and never saw the field again.

My memory has failed me. Thanks!

Ha! Mine too. I just remembered he was going by Dom Davis his first three years and then changed it while he was rehabbing. Most people remember him as Davis.

Guess he never knew his dad and switched to his mom's name. Shame he never made it back because he was a good all around back.

ETA: looked it up, was RB12-RB4-RB8 (PPG in full PPR.) His rookie year Jamal Lewis ran for 2K and was RB6 LOL (Priest, LT2, Edge, Ahman Green, Portis, Shaun Alexander.) He never made a Pro Bowl bc the NFL had so many great RBs back then.

Thanks. Now I recall.

What a great era for workhorse backs!

I’ve been performing my annual pre draft task of watching a lot of running back highlight recaps from last year.

I didn’t own Swift last year, so didn’t watch much other than his big play TD highlights on redzone and didn’t realize how much ability he has to move the pile and break tackles.

In redraft he’s screaming his way into the first round for me with anyone with those later picks.

I don’t play PPR, but I’m thinking I may even take him at 10 in a 12 teamer because I’m not sure he’ll be there at pick 15.

D'Andre Swift rushed 15 times for 144 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' Week 1 loss to the Eagles, adding three catches for 31 yards.

The box score shows Jamaal Williams plundering two scores from Swift, but it's not clear that Williams is Detroit's preferred red zone back. Before both Williams scores, Swift broke loose for a long run and was taken out as the Lions entered the red zone. It's likely that Swift was just being given a breather. His touchdown came on a fourth-down plunge from seven yards out. Behind Detroit's elite offensive line, Swift was able to pick his spots and blow by the Eagles' defense. Williams will prevent him from reaching 20 touches on a regular basis, but Swift will project for RB1 numbers in Week 2 versus Washington based on his incredible efficiency and receiving usage.

Took Barkley over Swift as I didn’t want to be too invested in Swift (I have him in dynasty)

Barkley having an ok game, but Swift went ham. Sigh.

Looks like Jamaal Charles to me. Have him as my RB1 in my big moneyleague.

Instant 50 yard play. Stay healthy for me, bud. I need you in November December!!

Just labeled questionable on yahoo. They work quick

Reynolds or Jackson worth a pick up in case of injury? Assuming Williams is already rostered

No Swift at practice today.

Crossing fingers it's just a rest day.
@BobbyLayne

I think some of us are going to need you to talk us down here, it's only 10:15 am but that bottle of mezcal seems to be calling my name.

Dunno yet

Didn't come up in Campbell's morning presser. Brockers got a veterans day off, Ragnow played hurt and is resting along with two other OL, and Swift wasn't on the field in the observation portion of practice (first 15-20 minutes.) No details from anyone yet.

Popped up as questionable.

Point of information...

Don't read too much into that. It has more to do with the vesting rules for veterans than anything going on with Swift. They planned this transaction out a few days ago.

DL Levi Onwuzurike went on IR Saturday, he'll miss four weeks. They brought Justin Jackson up from the practice squad for Sunday's game. But they didn't sign him to the 53-man.

It’s likely because of the NFL’s Week 1 vested veteran rule. One of the benefits that comes with being a vested veteran is that if you are on an NFL active roster for Week 1, your salary becomes fully guaranteed. But there is also a downside to this rule for veterans too.

For a player like Jackson, whose status as RB4 leaves him a bit vulnerable to roster movement, the Lions likely didn’t want to keep him on the initial 53-man roster for Week 1, thus guaranteeing his salary. So instead, the Lions and Jackson jumped through some hoops, taking a different path to get him back on the roster.

Now that Jackson is on the roster, his primary responsibilities will include his special teams play. In Week 1, the Lions only deployed two running backs—D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams—meaning Jackson was two players away from seeing the field, as Craig Reynolds remains RB3. But, Jackson was the teams starting kick returner, where he saw seven of his 20 special teams snaps. His ability to contribute on all four special teams units makes him a valuable backend of the roster asset.

I did see that Justin Jackson was added to the active roster today - hope that is not in connection to Swift's absence.

ETA: added before reading Bobby's post above - never mind.

Wait, I thought you are Dan Campbell.

Not that one has anything to do with another, but CMC is also not practicing today due to load management. Maybe that's just part of the norm these days for offensive focal points.

Swift was questionable (groin from August) the first six weeks of 2021, limited or non-participant at least once every week. Was never on a pitch count until the shoulder strain late in the year.

Not saying it's nothing, but we won't know for a day or maybe two. MCDC is pretty transparent on injuries, he doesn't play games. Like he acknowledges all the time it's his job to help reporters do their job. He'll be cagey about tactics, schemes, what they plan on doing that week, who's calling plays or what packages they'll try, but he seems pretty open about the medical stuff.

AKA "Wednesday"

It's the reality we live in. I don't even bother to read practice reports on Wednesdays anymore, other than for a player who was injured to see if they're at least limited (like Tee Higgins today)

For otherwise healthy players, whether RB or older guys, not practicing Wednesdays just seems like the new normal.

Just something to keep an eye on.

Swift ran for a career-high 144 yards on 15 carries in the Lions' season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Swift finished the game and told reporters after he felt "good" physically, but he appeared to run a pass route on the Lions' second-to-last offensive play with a hobble in his step.

There is nothing in the article you linked that says anything about Swift being hobbled, nor have I heard or read anything here (in Detroit) that says that. Not saying it's wrong but there has been no mention of it here

Update...That quote was in a different article by the freep's Lions beat writer.

I may have copied the wrong article - my bad

The Lions website says the same. It's strange we haven't heard anything until now. Nothing from any of the beat writers, including the writer from their website.
Did Campbell speak to the media?
Not that I'm aware of.

Don’t have time to listen right now, but maybe here

I didn't listen but if Campbell said anything about Swift, I have to believe the beat writers would have reported it and none of them did. Also, before practice today, Campbell talked about Frank Ragnow's injury but no mention of Swift. To me it suggests it's a minor injury.

Someone else mentioned it first but Swift seems like one of those guys where it's a surprise when he's not on some list. Key is whether it's something he can play through.

:nerd:

@Faust usually beats me to posting any news lol

obviously nothing today.

I know this is not the norm around the league but the Lions are big on open transparency. the pencil ******* that had the job before MCDC was toxic af and hyper secretive. not like they want the coaches giving away game plans but thus regime has a different kind of ethos. players and coaches and staff can just be themselves. management / team leadership is upfront and open, with everyone. including reporters trying to do their job.

basically trying to un**** everything Quintricia ****ed up,

anyway, long winded way of saying if something was up they’d say so. it’s how they’ve been handling injuries for the past 20 months. I expect it to continue until they have a reason not to do it. they don’t play.
