RB Dalvin Cook, DAL (3 Viewers)

With the Rams clearing cap space this week are they a possibility for Cook?
I think they're clearing cap space because they are in cap hell. I can't see them now investing some of that back into an older RB.
I could see it on a 1 year deal. We know Sean McVay has a very tolerate/hate relationship with Cam Akers. Its more likely than a return to Minnesota at the very least.
Can't see it myself. Rams converted Kupp's salary to bonus just to be able to sign their draft picks. This team is a mess and will likely lead the NFL in UDFA's both on the roster and in the starting lineup, in fact you can bank on their defense leading the league in this category. They are not pretending they are contending this year, they'd have traded Stafford if they could and they still would if someone would take him. If a market opens up for Donald later and he's amenable to a trade that might be in the cards, same for Kupp but he won't carry that kind of value as an older "system" type WR.
Not to get off topic, but you really think that's the case? Because some playoff team should instantly offer a 1st for Kupp or Donald if so. Like Dallas should be all over Donald if he's available. Detroit too, and maybe they even should be in on Kupp?

I do agree the Rams are an underrated mess. Every time I see people talk about the Cardinals being this clear-cut tanking team, I keep thinking they are probably better than the Rams. But do the Rams see it that way?
The Rams defense may be historically bad - they really have no one outside of Donald.
Agreed. The 2nd best player might a day 3 rookie.

DT is arguably the only position the Rams are better than the Cardinals at, but its wild that so many seem to think the Cards the #1 pick lock.
QB and WR for sure. Sure, there’s not much behind Kupp, but the Cards have virtually nobody. And I’m sticking to my prediction that Kyler sits out that year.
Clayton Tune - This year's Brock Purdy.
Not sure we ever see another Brock Purdy. Imagine getting your franchise QB with the last pick of the draft…
WAY too soon to be calling Purdy a franchise QB. Dudes got 8 more NFL starts than I do.

Possibly, but with the way the Niners are talking they obviously are pretty excited about him. But technically you are correct, we should wait another year before proclaiming. I will check back.

Sounds like Dalvin seeks more than just money.

Dalvin Cook: I want to hold up that Lombardi Trophy one time
...Me, Dalvin Cook, I’m looking for somebody that’s ready to go win. I can be the piece to go help somebody to turn the page of go win and turn the franchise to go get a Lombardi Trophy. That’s all I want. I want to hold that trophy up, kiss it one time. That’s all I’m looking for right now.”

This reads like a $200 Jeopardy! clue

What is incongruent?

He was on Sirius yesterday and said he talks to Kevin every day.
He mentioned his agent and being ready for other opportunities but I couldn't get past that he talks with his former coach every day.
That's wrong of OConnell not letting him move on and giving him space like a breakup or bringing him back is imminent.

Go on the app and listen.

It’s wrong of a coach and former player to continue to talk after the player is no longer on the team? SayWhat???

Barry Jackson @flasportsbuzz
Tom Pelissero reiterates what we've been reporting past several days: Dalvin Cook wants significant contract and is not taking 5 M... He's not jumping on anything in that range.. willing to wait awhile. That's why mutual interest with Fins, Cook isn't enough (yet).

Barry Jackson @flasportsbuzz
If no big offer materializes & Cook ultimately accepts team friendly Dolphins deal in July/Aug., it would be fascinating to see what they do with Mostert OR Wilson (who played well/McDaniel fond of both). Would be right to do right by them and deal 1 to team where they could play
If Cook isn’t willing to take a pay cut, then he’s not going to be playing football this year IMO.

For one, it’s awfully late in the year for teams to have that sort of room in the cap. For another, the NFL is moving away from high priced RBs.

Saquan’s situation in NY should be a flashing sign to Cook that he’s unlikely to get a massive payday.

In 2023 it’s not disrespect. It’s just how teams roll these days.
I agree. Either he lowers his asking price or he waits for some preseason injuries that creates a need somewhere.

82 vs 0. That's how many regular season games Tom Brady has lost compared to Brock. Case closed. Brock Purdy isn't a franchise QB, he is THE franchise QB.

Its insane that Brady only lost 82 regular season games. He was a starter for 20 years. If you combined Mahomes and Staubach (the other most winningest QBs) you'd still need Mahomes to have 5 more years at this level to get to Brady.

Didn’t snip a thing, nor make a generalization. But thanks for clarifying. Have a great day.

I don't see any issue with talking with a former coach regularly, even if that team isn't bringing you back. Now if the coach is leading him on like they are going to bring him back and aren't, that's a problem.

It should be like a relationship breakup. A coach and cut player shouldn't be chatting every day. He's supposed to be moving on with his life.
If bringing him back is imminent, then he's keeping him up to speed and it's all good.

Besides the mental part after all his commitment and dedication to the Vikes and needing that "time to move on" mentality, how does it look to other teams hoping to hear how he'd love to come play for their team?
How does it look to Mattison if he calls Dalvin every day? The guy is replacing a top player for many years and supposed to win over teammates as he is "the man" now.

I really don't understand this line of thinking...it says to me Cook is very coachable (and understands the business of the NFL) and I would consider this a plus if another team is looking at him...it's not an 8th grade break-up...these are adults.

I don't either. What's wrong with making friends with people you work with? It isn't even the coach that decides who gets cut. He has input but the GM and owner are really the people responsible.

If anything I think it shows maturity on Cook’s side and as for O’Connell it says a lot to other players that even in a situation like this the player holds no animosity towards him.

Right and I am sure O'Connell would prefer Cook be on the team but next best would be helping Cook find the best home possible.

SayWhat???
You clearly can read but choose not to
Definitely can read. Explain how I misinterpreted you stating “He mentioned his agent and being ready for other opportunities but I couldn't get past that he talks with his former coach every day. That's wrong of OConnell not letting him move on and giving him space like a breakup or bringing him back is imminent.”
It's not my first day on a message board.

Yeah, @Bri is on an island on this one.

Dalvin/Rhamondre combo in New England?
Now that would be a fantasy nightmare
This has some legs. However, I will believe it when I see it. Schefter tweeted before the weekend that NE was a potential landing spot for Hopkins and Cook. Since then, Cook apparently has been liking social media posts from NE players (as well as other media tweets and IG posts linking the two of them to the Pats). NE certainly has the money and the cap room to sign both of them to multi-year contracts (but not enough cap room do single year deals). That being said, I doubt either of these guys will play on much of a discount. Not sure the Pats would pony up market value for a RB who already has 1,500+ career touches and a 31-year-old WR.

Hey bud, I just wanted to lighten the vibe up in here, I do appreciate you posting this and bringing up what i think is an interesting tidbit on info on Cook's off season this year.

-Miami cut Byron Jones and he was crying hardship and foul, I didn't hear anything about Coach Mike McDaniel talking to him daily on the phone afterwards.
-I can't comment on whether the Vikings coach is leading Cook on or not, doesn't seem like the most important part of the information

Could Cook be brought back to Minnesota if he doesn't sign elsewhere? I doubt it but it's still June.
Your board credit is good, you shouldn't feel defensive but believe me, I understand how you feel

All good,
Cheers!

While I think its pretty much a nothing burger as far as KOC still talking to Cook and I doubt they bring him back to the Vikings, i wouldnt rule out that possibility entirely.

There was a big stink with the Vikings former GM and coaches not being very amicable to the players and KOC has made a big deal about changing the culture and having good relationship with the players. So I think its nothing more than that as far as them still talking.

Huh? All good man.

I see most disagree. It's fine.

I don't have a reply. They think X I think Z. Just different is all

Between the Jets interest in Gibbs, drafting of Abanikanda, and now interest in Cook, not sure how you could feel great about Breece in 23 right now. I’m speculating but that signals worry in his recovery to me.

Ian said he's expected week one but they don't want to rush it.
I infer week 4-6 would be better for everyone

Yet Hill is being drafted as normal while a fully healthy Kenneth Walker is dropping because of Charbonnet. I don't get it.
It's obvious the Jets have concerns.

Well said. The only team I think would sign him at his asking price would be the Jets imo.

The Jets haven't actually added Cook and I doubt they will.

Actually I doubt they're really interested - he hasn't visited with them. All reports are Hall is ready for week 1, and it's a stretch to say the Jets have concerns because they added a 5th round RB.

If the Jets did sign Cook that would be an indication they have concerns about Halls recovery. I dont see any reason why they would want Cook if Hall is good to go. Even then it doesnt make sense unless they thought Hall would miss most of the 2023 season.

As far as this report that Cook might get 10 million annually, it does make sense that he will be paid more than Sanders or Montgomery.

More importantly how is this good for Cook beyond 2023, or even the latter part of 2023? Does he want to do this whole thing over again in 2024? Or will he retire?

Good point - with Hall (eventually coming back, if not Week 1), Michael Carter, Bam Knight and Abanikanda in the mix, how much work can an in decline Dalvin Cook expect?

I honestly don't see how it makes sense for the Jets, even if Breece was expected to miss the entire season. Carter and Knight showed they can handle NFL carries and Abanikanda looks like a player as well. That would be a more than adequate RBBC.

The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reports the Dolphins have offered a contract to Dalvin Cook.
Jackson confirms there is “mutual interest” between Cook and the Dolphins. That Cook didn’t immediately take the team’s contract offer probably means it was on the low side salary wise — hardly shocking in a league in which even the game’s best running backs are routinely low-balled. Cook, whose production and efficiency has fallen off over the past two seasons, would likely enter a timeshare backfield in Miami alongside Raheem Mostert, Devon Achane, and Jeff Wilson. The Dolphins backfield is shaping up to be among the most frustrating for fantasy purposes this season.

Right.

It doesnt make sense for anyone here.

As I said before its just the media needing something to talk about. That is the only party this makes any sense for.

Eta - Maybe Cooks agent is putting stuff out there to try to get Miami to increase their offer is I suppose another party this might make sense for.

Sure is a lot of smoke around them. They are in win now mode with Rodgers. If there is any doubt about Hill, why wouldn't they be interested in Cook??

Listen, I think Miami is where he ends up, but it's not unreasonable for the Jets to grab him. AND it keeps the Dolphins from getting him. It can go both ways.

I'm sure it all comes down to price. If the RB market is so depressed that the Jets can get a guy like Cook for a bargain basement price, it's a no-brainer despite who they already have in the RB stable. At the end of the day though, I'm sure one team will offer a bit more than what most are offering, and all signs point to Miami.

AND it keeps the Dolphins from getting him.
Do NFL team actually do this?
A stupid one maybe. I don't see the logic in signing a player to keep him away from another team at all, unless maybe it's for 1 specific game that week, certainly not for a season.

I'm still of the belief Cook has very little interest league wide as a true starter, and that's why we are just seeing team names thrown at the wall. Realistically, unless Hall or Javonte are way worse than their offseason reports have implied, I don't see Cook being more than a role player on NY or Denver. He'd be a clear backup in NE. Miami has a RB who does something as good or better than Cook at every facet of RB play, even if its not 1 guy.

I do also wonder if Cook's off field stuff is more of an issue for teams, then is being reported.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the Jets have “done their homework” on free agent Dalvin Cook.

Fowler also reports “several teams in the AFC East are vying for Cook’s potential services.” The Jets have been projecting sunshine on Breece Hall’s ACL recovery, but signing Cook for the type of money he is likely to command would tell a different story. It’s also possible mercenary gunslinger Aaron Rodgers isn’t willing to bet on a sophomore ACL case at running back in what could be his final season. Cook to the Jets ultimately seems unlikely for a number of reasons, but it certainly cannot be dismissed out of hand.
