RB Dameon Pierce, Free Agent (3 Viewers)

Texans releasing RB Marlon Mack, clearing way for rookie Dameon Pierce as starter

Excerpt:

It's notable but not too surprising that the Texans jettisoned Mack after he played deep into the team's third preseason game.

The move further underscored Pierce's standing as Houston's top running back. During the preseason, the rookie displayed great vision, balance and burst through the hole, rushing for chunk gains. He projects as the workhorse in Houston to open the season.

Rex Burkhead worked as the backup during preseason action and should retain that role, along with the likely third-down snaps in passing situations.

After missing out on him by 1 pick in a few drafts and having no shares, finally in at the cost of two 2023 2nds. Let's get this train rolling.

Graham Barfield @GrahamBarfield
Marlon Mack getting cut doesn't change Dameon Pierce's outlook at all. Mack got out-played by Royce Freeman this preseason.

What remains to be seen is how much Rex Burkhead plays on passing downs/when the Texans are trailing.

Graham Barfield @GrahamBarfield
Whether or not Pierce gets 60-65% of the snaps or is immediately a 80% workhorse is a big distinction.

Burkhead did play a ton late last year.

But yes… it’s DAME TIME. Always was. Always has been.

Sigmund Bloom @SigmundBloom
and how often the Texans are trailing, and how often they have to play in pass mode as opposed to keeping the offense on schedule

Graham Barfield @GrahamBarfield
I’m Pierce’s biggest fan but his passing down role is the last hurdle. He’s checked off every other box

Kinda seems like guys who weren’t on the train standing on the tracks as the train is about to run them over.

Everything for most of the preseason has been indicating that Pierce is going to be a workhorse 3 down back. Trying to force in all of these castoff pieces as having more of a role than they deserve is just a refusal to acknowledge reality.

Getting that Houston Texan Steve Slaton vibe to it. Very different players, obviously. Slaton a 3rd rounder and Pierce a 4th. Both around 5' 10", but Pierce has about 20 lbs on him. Slaton ran a 4.49-40 compared to Pierce's 4.59.

Man, though, what a diamond Slaton was early on when given the reins.....

One time, in band camp, I traded Steve Slaton (and navel lint) for Chris Johnson. I rested on those laurels for a few seasons.

dude just wanted a 2023 1st and two 2023 2nds for him..no thanks

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you outliers.
how do you mean? not sure i follow.
A 2023 1st and two 2023 2nds for Pierce is crazy talk. Well, it's on the high end of all possibilities.
Oh sure yeah it didn't happen though. Just one out of another million rejected offers in FF land. That is what tripped me up. But yeah anyway his price is rocketing.

I got a little bit different vibe watching the SF game. It reminded me of Arian Foster's last 2 games his rookie season (wearing #37) in the sense that the OL suddenly appeared to have a completely new attitude and confidence with the guy running the ball. All of a sudden the running game just.... worked.

Those Texans couldn't run the ball all season. Slaton had a horrible follow-up season and fumbled everything. When Foster finally played, everything looked different and clicked. I got a little bit of that same feeling watching Pierce the other night. Not saying he's Foster at all, but the feeling was the same for me as far as suddenly being able to run the football. Also Tunsil was out and Kenyon Green didn't play with the first unit. Green had a couple of mauling blocks to spring Mack for big runs too. Obviously it was just a preseason game, so we'll see if that feeling carries over to Week 1. But I feel like this running game has a chance to be something this team can build on.

Incidentally, Foster's first game wearing #23 the next season was also home for Indy, like this season. He went for 231-3. Surely don't expect anything close, but hope it's a good omen. Curse me for feeling any kind of optimism for this team at all.

Good stuff. Can tell you are true Houston fan. Had Arian on every team I owned that season, and felt like the fantasy master that first week, lol.

5.10 in a slow redraft I'm in the middle of, ahead of Breece Hall, Dobbins, Cam Akers, AJ Dillon, and Damien Harris. To me Hall and Dillon should be taken earlier than Pierce, but I can see taking Pierce before the others.

I think I agree with Hall and Dillon ahead of Pierce, but it is close. He was way ahead of the other 3

I took Dillon 2 picks before Pierce in the 5th round of a 14 team league. I can’t say for sure it was the right move but personally I feel better with Dillon than Pierce.

Higher floor for sure.

Got Pierce in my 2nd draft. (Now in 2/2)
Took him at 5.10 in a 10 teamer.
(This league is .25 ppr, .25 per COMPLETION for QBs, and .25 per TOUCH)
Figured you all would find this format interesting.
My other RBs are Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, Clyde Edwards Helaire, Jamaal Williams, Khalil Herbert, Kenneth Walker, Isiah Pacheco (and Pierce)
My WRs are a tad weak CeeDee Lamb, DK Metcalf, Brandin Cooks and Christian Kirk.
Allen at QB, Pitts at TE.
I think I'll be competitive.

QB - Allen
RB - Barkley
RB - Take your pick
WR - Lamb
WR - Take your pick
TE - Pitts

I like it!

Dude So close, and yet so far.

I'm starting to think his hype makes him overvalued. He could be good, but at this point he almost has to be great in order for their to be value.
The whole point of 'sleeper' is others don't know about him. At this point everybody knows about him.

This has the feel of a Slaten/JRobinson to me. Backs without much pedigree going to poor situations and surprising. And he very well may do that. But (sadly perhaps) he will do that on someone else's roster because someone will always take him before I am willing to do so because...

Dynasty: I suspect that he will be replaced or at least committeed within a year or two.
Redraft PPR: someone will be willing to take him before me as I take a wr I have ranked above him and there are always wrs in this situation.
Redraft Non-PPR: If I played in any redraft non-ppr leagues, his value to me would rise enough that I might have a shot at him.

Watched him go 29 overall in a PPR redraft league tonight.

Perhaps time will prove them right but I definitely don't have the stones to make him a top 3 drafted player on my team

I took him at 2.7,

in a keep 6, 12-team PPR league. RBS that went after him Jacobs, CEH, Gibson, Gordon and Ken Walker. I like Walker but not this year.

That all seems about right. 7th/8th round seems like pretty decent value. Surprised he didn't go round 1 in it a bit actually.

Took him at 4.9 in a PPR redraft last night because I got cute and took Allen and Andrews early. Took him over Montgomery, Dillion, and CEH (next 3 backs off the board)

Rostered in all 3 of my redraft leagues. LFG.

He is on ALL my teams thus far as well....... 3/3 (I may not get into more leagues or drafts, not sure yet.)

He is either my RB 2 in all my leagues, or he is shuffled into my stable of RBs in each league, that I will juggle in and out to get some RB 2 production.

Just for context....................

STARTERS @RB ------------------------------------------------------------------ BENCH RBS

LEAGUE 1 - MCCAFFREY, DAMEON PIERCE............................... DAVID MONTGOMERY, MELVIN GORDON, JAMAAL WILLIAMS, KHALIL HERBERT, ZAMIR WHITE , D'ONTA FOREMAN.

LEAGUE 2 - TRAVIS ETIENNE , DAMEON PIERCE....................... DAVID MONTGOMERY, CLYDE EDWARDS-HELAIRE , RASHAAD PENNY , KHALIL HERBERT , JAMAAL WILLIAMS , ISIAH PACHECO

LEAGUE 3 - SAQUON BARKLEY , DAMEON PIERCE, JOSH JACOBS (FLEX) ............................ CLYDE EDWARDS-HELAIRE, JAMAAL WILLIAMS, KENNETH WALKER III , KHALIL HERBERT , ISIAH PACHECO ....... AND GUS EDWARDS IN AN *INJURED RESERVE* SLOT.

Leagues 1 and 2 are "Start 3 WRs, 2 RBs, QB ,TE , Def , K, no flex".
League 3 is a "Start 2 WRs, 2 RBs , QB, TE , FLEX , DEF , K". HOWEVER - Special scoring........ .25 ppr for anyone, .25 PER COMPLETION (QBs), and .25 PER CARRY/each touch for RBs .

You are right........ LFG~!

Who's starting him this week?

I'm likely starting him in all 3/3 leagues that I have him in.
The only other RB I own, I'm debating starting over Pierce is David Montgomery in 2 of my leagues.

But I'll probably trot Pierce out there , as Montgomery is facing SF this week.

I have Henry and Chubb. It's also PPR so I'd put him in my flex. Right now leaning Olave over him though. Other options would be Dobbins (waiting to see his health), Christian Watson or Hardman.
