RB Dameon Pierce, Free Agent (2 Viewers)

Dameon Pierce carried 11 times for 33 yards in Houston's Week 1 tie against the Colts.​


He added a catch for six yards. Pierce was more-or-less splitting series with Rex Burkhead early in the game, but Burkhead seemed to be the more trusted back by the staff on non-rushing work. Burkhead had 72% of the snaps to Pierce's 28%, but the carry totals almost telegraphed that the ball was going to Pierce when he did get in. Barring any kind of proclamation that things are changing, he'll be a FLEX option in Week 2 against the Broncos.

I was not in on the hype and someone always grabbed him before I could snag him but I'm pretty surprised on what transpired in Houston. Seemed like a positive game script for him and the hype from camp and the coaches didn't foreshadow a Burkhead lead backfield in anything I saw/read. Very odd.

My point is he was being severely over-drafted by mid to late august. I’m sure he’ll be a fairly competent player but people were drafting him over substantially better values.

ya, the hype train left the station in drafts that were close to the regular season. Earlier drafts his value was fine/correct.
 
I think Lovie is pretty old school and trusts his vets. Perhaps as the season wears on and if Pierce is considerably outperforming Burkhead (and capably protecting Mills), we may see a bigger shift to the rookie.

I think that's certainly possible but I don't think many envisioned when they drafted Pierce a week ago. Now you'll likely have to hold him on your bench and see what happens for at least a couple weeks and hope Pierce outperforms with his touches.

True, but I *think* all Lovie said is that Pierce deserves to be the starter, but not necessarily be the bell cow. Guess most of us fell for the coachspeak for now.
 
This was perhaps people getting fooled by vanilla pre-season defenses. Obvious it's still possible he breaks out, but this should pour some water on the hype for now.

haha....you may be right but that's REALLY splitting hairs. Even the beat writers though, everyone seemed to miss this....all you heard was Pierce. Maybe it is just an old school coach clutching to his vets over the shiny rookie. Although Pierce did get some touches, he just didn't do much with them.
 
I said in another thread that he's only had 15+ carries in one game since high school. Everyone expecting him to be a workhorse right out of the gate was going to be disappointed. For some reason Florida only gave him an average of 7 carries per game. without anyone really ahead of him. He did average a TD per game his senior year. There's a lot to be optimistic about, but it's probably going to take a few games to get there.
 
There is A LOT of concern here about Pierce. I can't say I don't have any concern, as I own him in 3/3 re-draft leagues.
However, I knew the INDY run defense was strong (top 4 last year I think????, maybe 5th, can't remember).
If anything, I look at this as a solid outing, in that they trusted him with 11 carries, in a game that was just, well "weird".
Whats more of a concern is the Texans were up 20-3 going into the 4th, and managed to blow this one.

If you have better alternatives, the play is probably to wait until week 3 to start him, as that opens up a much better stretch of matchups, then we'll see how he really looks and what his role will be.

To those concerned about Rex Burkhead getting more usage................
If you think thats going to be the case when the season is over (barring major injury or something terrible), then I have some bad news for you. :lol:

This could just be a classic case of easing the rookie in, and giving the vet more work early on. But I don't suppose we'll know for sure until later in the season.
 
That usage is not what you want to see but Lovie's quotes today are exactly what you want to hear:

"I understand how many plays Dameon Pierce played. Planned for him to play more." Mentioned changing that going forward

Lovie Smith on Dameon Pierce said that pass protection, pass-catching, skills in addition to being 'primary running back' are all things the team will work on with him as they continue to ramp up. 'There's some things we're going to work on so that situation doesn't happen again'

I do think there is a level of negative over-reaction here... Pierce, due to positional scarcity, is the type of guy you target when your early picks are focused on other positions. I have him in one league where I took Jefferson and Allen early. Still comfortable with the risk/reward of a player like Pierce, a rookie RB, in the 7th as RB3.

Too many team question marks and not a big enough receiving threat for the 5th, which does appear to be a reach at this time.

Sure, if you ignore that he was supposed to be "the guy" last week. Lovie admitted that the plan was for him to be "the guy" but he somehow screwed it up because the game situation seemingly got much better for Pierce?

I was half joking- obviously the headline is a positive, but it's also a reminder of how bad his coach is.

I didn't draft Pierce in any leagues as he was going to early for me, plus, well, Houston. However, someone dropped Pierce in one league, so I just picked him up and dropped J. Cook (RB-Buf), who I had hoped would be a cheap way into the powerhouse Buffalo offense, but there are so many options there. Much less options in Houston and I don't believe in Burkhead in the long-run either. As always, time will tell if this was wise.

Yep, and I may revisit him again this week. Dropped him in two leagues James Robinson $7 and drop Pierce, and picked up Curtis Samuel for Pierce in another. Needed some WR strength with Higgins still up in the air, and even so Curtis Samuel will play Flex for week 2 anyway. Who knows?

I don't think Pierce is a high priority for anybody right now, Burkhead is according to waiver wire and rankings, and no one really likes to have HOU players on their teams too much now. Same goes for the Washington Commanders - all of a sudden those players are being scooped up. We'll see how it goes in WAS. Any thoughts on HOU or WAS MoP after week 1?

I may see if I can re-snag Pierce at no cost if he clears waivers, and if I can make room again. Worth a bench and a hold for now.
 

Dameon Pierce ran 15 times for 69 yards in Houston's Week 2 loss to Denver, adding an eight-yard catch on his only target.​

Pierce ran fierce, busting through several Broncos tacklers as the Texans offensive line continued to have issues. It's obvious that he's the best back in Houston and he played 39 snaps to Rex Burkhead's 22, including almost all the early-down work. Unfortunately the Texans offense will continue to hold him back, but lines like this build a case that he can be trusted as a low-end RB2. He'll have a tasty matchup next week against the Bears.

Looked good at times today. They just are never going to have any leads and sustained drives are going to be few and far between.
 
Texans could have won today - Pierce looks pretty good to me. FF players that bounce around like a bad day trader would have already dropped him.
 
If there was no preseason hype, this guy might have been a late round flyer or week 3-4 waiver wire pickup. Then he'd have a normal trajectory to points. I think he's on the right path now. He's getting better every week.
 

Texans coach Lovie Smith said Dameon Pierce "finishes plays" and gives "extra effort."​

Smith said this right after noting that the team, outside of Pierce, has struggled to finish. Smith also hinted at giving Pierce more work ahead of Week 2. Then, versus the Broncos, the rookie back was the only runner in Houston's backfield to earn a carry. He rushed 15 times for 69 yards. Pierce has a stranglehold on the early-down work in Houston and could start seizing passing downs from Rex Burkhead soon. He enters Week 3 on the RB2/3 borderline.

Hoping week 1 was some sort of dumb tryout (Lovie Smith). Hope role continues to grow. At CHI is a "winnable" game or at least a good matchup. Lets go.
 
Looks good out there. Was able to see some runs on Redzone and he makes good cuts, looks quick. A couple catches even.

The team is really, really bad though and he had a couple fumbles. May sniff around this week and see if I can get something there were a couple groans when I drafted him.
 

Dameon Pierce (hip) was limited in Wednesday's practice.​

It's a new injury for the rookie running back, but the limited tag suggests he was either hurt Wednesday or more than likely is on the right track to play Week 4 against the Chargers. Pierce broke out for 101 total yards and one touchdown on 22 touches last week against the Bears and is an every-week RB2.

Dameon Pierce (hip) is not on Houston's final Week 4 injury report.​

He should be on the RB2/FLEX line against the Chargers in a game where the banged-up Los Angeles side has slowly bled down from favored by 6.5 points to closer to 3. If the Texans are to control the clock, Pierce will be a big factor -- and the Texans did this to them last year as well. Pierce has a fairly high upside this week despite the home underdog status.
