RB David Montgomery, DET (1 Viewer)

I am a Montgomery owner and I’m not sure if I agree with this “sell high” notion. The Detroit offense is legit. They let Williams go and got Montgomery because they felt like he was the better player. He comes back from an injury and they give him a robust workload. The dude has had a TD in every game that he’s played in so far this year, and it clearly seems like he’ll get goal line work as long as he’s healthy. What exactly in this narrative would make me want to move him? The RB position is hard to trust this year—and I feel like starting Montgomery when he plays is as about a safe a bet as you can find in fantasy this season (with the exception of maybe 3 players—c-Mac, a healthy eckeler..etc). I don’t know if I trust guys like Derrick henry, Joe Mixon, and possibly even Saquon over him. For those people advocating a “sell high”—-what kind of players are you suggesting that Montgomery owners shoot for? Genuinely curious.
exactly. simply saying "sell high" in a vacuum is worthless information.
Yup. It’s odd that I posted the above minutes after several members and even the owner of the website advocated selling high—and not one answer yet. I personally do not see much of a dropoff between Montgomery and any running back outside of the top 2-3 guys. I have Rhomondre Stevenson and Montgomery—and I trust Montgomery way more. I‘m not sure I trust guys like Mixon, Saquon, or Henry more than him. I’m not sure Jerome Ford is even a step up from Monty. In any case—I think that Monty is basically a guy you have to start if he’s healthy
Trust is something I know have in Montgomery, because Campbell clearly loves him and trusts him in his role.

I targeted him in drafts thinking he'd at least be valuable for the first few weeks before Gibbs takes over. It's clear to me now that's not at all what Campbell is thinking at all.

Picking up right where Williams left off last year. A defined role capable of scoring 12 to 20 TD and most of us balked at it.

And we think we're so smart. 😂 I have him on 1 team where I napped and computer autodrafted. Then, I benched him this week.

Congratulations smart people who drafted him. You got the SOTD.

So
He's the definite goal line back on a good offense with a non mobile QB. Plus he can grind out the clock with a lead.
He’s also the unquestionable starting 1st and 2nd down back who often stays in on 3rd down.
So was Gainwell, 3 weeks ago. I know that's not a perfectly fair comparison, as Gainwell barely had half the touches Montgomery just did, and Gibbs has had his shots to impress, whereas Swift hadn't yet. But things could change quick if Gibbs started to put it all together.

Disagree. He’s not going to be tougher on early downs, he’s not going to be a better goal line back, and he’s not going to be better in pass protection.

How David Montgomery & the Detroit Lions bullied the Packers on TNF
I thought this was really nicely done and thanks for sharing it.

I like that the guy breaking this down has a defensive coordinators point of view and he talks about the offense giving similar looks as previous weeks film that opponents are studying, but then not running the same plays out of these looks as they did in previous weeks, but some counter plays to those, to keep the defense off balance, as they are more expecting the plays they have studied out of those looks from their preparation but are being attacked by something else.

The thing that stands out to me from this is when he talks about Montgomerys patience and timing with these plays, that Gibbs likely does not have yet as a rookie player. That just takes time to develop for all players. Adrian Peterson talks about having to learn to be more patient and press the hole before cutting back. All RB have to learn and develop this as they get used to the speed and timing in the NFL. Montgomery too in his rookie season, but now Montgomery has enough reps to understand this to the point where its second nature. He doesn't have to even think about it. While Gibbs needs more time before he gets to that point.

I think that includes some of the timing when running out on routes as well that Gibbs just needs more time to develop. Right now Gibbs is still thinking too much, and also is hitting things full speed too soon, instead of using some slight hesitation to get a bit more space on these plays.

Its like driving a car. You need some time getting to know a cars throttle pick up and how it handles when driving it the first time. Then once you have more practice with it, you are driving it by feel more than actively thinking about it.

Yeah he's one of my favorite new content creators. Historically a Ravens breakdown channel, he adopted the Lions and it's basically 50-50 between DET & BAL. Occasionally he'll do opposing players like the Colts impressive young 6'4" CB Julius Brents.

Earlier this week he did a Week 3 breakdown on Jahmyr Gibbs solo act v the Falcons. He does a nice job explaining concepts and schemes in an accessible manner that is easy to follow.

Thanks for the link. I will check that out in a bit.

As far as how the offense keeps changing their plays in subtle ways week to week to keep the defense off balance. Its these adjustments that rookie players are going to need more reps to get used to as well. Its not just all the different plays they have to memorize and get used to, but all these subtle differences of these plays as well.

Ben Johnson is always tinkering and installing new plays each week. Sometimes it's plays they didn't get to the previous week, so no one has film on it. More common is they find a flaw in a specific defender's reads.
  • Week 2 v SEA, an assistant to the assistant (one of Rex Ryan's kids, does quality control) noticed the Seahawks S cheated on run support. He suggested a flea flicker. Gibbs flipped it back to Jared, 36 yards to Kalif Raymond for the first TD.
  • Week 3 v ATL, they noticed the S always coming over the top on 9 routes by the left X WR. So they ran that but had LaPorta from the slot run parallel and then break to the post. W.A. open, 45 yard TD. Before the play Goff told them in the huddle "I don't know if you wanna know but this is the one, boys." They knew it was 45 yard TD play before they ran it.
  • Week 4 at GB, two players they took advantage of their tendencies. On 1st & 10 ARSB ran a 5 yard hitch, stopped and turned - they knew Rasul Douglas would try to jump it - then he pivoted to spin around and ran a corner route. When he caught the 24 yard TD pass the nearest trailing defending was 7.2 yards away, the biggest separation route of the season per NextGen.
Later they baited Quay Walker. Gibbs has had good success running sweeps to the left end, Walker overpursued. Gibbs flipped it to Raymond who took the reverse 40 yards.
The Lions had a good offseason with solid FA signings (3 DBs + Monty) and a solid first 2 days in the draft - the two 1st rounders are contributing role players, the two 2nd rounders are already among the best at their positions - but BY FAR the biggest get was during the playoffs when Ben Johnson withdrew from consideration for CAR & IND. He wanted to finish what they started in Detroit. It's not flashy splash plays all the time, it's a lot of meat and potatoes football that relies on clever gap blocking schemes. We're lucky to have him for one more year.

This is a terrific situation for David Montgomery. I hope they manage his load a little more and keep him healthy. He is going to have a career year IMO.

All teams and players try to do this when they study the tendencies of upcoming opponents. Some times its little tells just based off of a players posture or the distance of their alignment, sometimes it bigger things like the 3 examples you give here leading to planned counters to that which can lead to big plays.

Sadly for the defense they are more at a disadvantage from these reads and tells than the offense is, because the offense can use those tells to their advantage more than the defense can to catch players out of position.

The offense knows what they are running and exactly how they are going to run it, while the defense is only making educated guesses.

Lions HC Dan Campbell said David Montgomery will be out “a little bit” with a rib injury suffered in the team’s Week 6 win over the Buccaneers.
We’d like a bit more clarity here, but the tone in the comment suggests Montgomery won’t be playing in Week 7 against the Ravens. We’ll have a better sense of his status when the team takes the practice field on Wednesday, but it’s possible Craig Reynolds could be in line for a busy day if Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) can’t go. Detroit’s injury report will be one to watch for when it drops later this week.

My gut says week 10 will be his return date with a week 9 bye week.

Yeah Dan Campbell is such a positive guy being “out a little bit” is about as close he’ll get to “yeah we’re pretty jammed up here, does not look good, might not have him for 3-4 weeks.”

Sounds like the same injury that Herbert and Kamara had last season. If so the bad news is he won't be fully healed all year and is going to need a shot to play for awhile. Good news is Kamara only missed a game and Herbert none.

Still think what Travdogg said makes sense, miss 2 games, take 4 weeks to recover, see you back in week 10.

What exactly is the injury?

David Montgomery (ribs) did not practice Friday.

Barring a surprise practice session on Saturday, Montgomery will miss another game with his rib injury. The Lions have a Week 9 bye, so one more absence from Montgomery will give him a lengthy recovery time. He should be back in action for Week 10.

Was Montgomery put on IR?

Curious if we get any additional read from Campbell today on his RBs.

Missed this. Haven’t heard anything. Usually if there’s any chance someone might go, Dan Campbell - ever the optimist - will say “he’s close” “he’s making progress” regardless if the player is DNP or LP. Only thing he said this week about David was “He’s out” it “he’s bot practicing” without any elaboration.

They’re comfortable putting the load on Gibbs, both MCDC and BJ have said as much.

Week 8 is bye, Monty is widely expected to be good to go for the Chargers game November 12 (Week 10.)

If the cartilage was separated from the bone it bid could potentially a 2-3 month recovery. I find it hard to believe that’s the case since they didn’t IR him.

Lions RB David Montgomery is out for Week 8 against the Raiders.

This was always the likeliest scenario after the lead back failed to practice this week. His absence paves the way for rookie Jahmyr Gibbs to operate in a borderline workhorse role for the second consecutive week after seeing a robust 87 percent snap rate and 21 running back opportunities against the Ravens in Week 7. Expect Craig Reynolds to serve in a strict change of pace role against the Raiders.

Stephania Bell said not only is he out this week, these rib cartilage injuries are very painful, worse than the actual rib and this could linger even past the bye

IDK who that is but my understanding is it didn't separate from the bone; since they didn't IR him, the expectation is he'll start practicing again in 10 days when they start preparing for the Chargers road game

After the Gibby breakout what are we thinking Montys role will be when he returns from injury?

Hoping for 60/40ish with GL carries here.

50-50 with Gibbs getting all the passing work, and Monty getting the short yardage.

The concern is how healthy Monty is when he comes back, and how much Gibbs keeps improving.

I'd rather own Gibbs out of the 2, but its essentially a tossup, I think.

Monty is going to get 95% of the work when he returns.

Monty is the corporate politician who steals credit from everyone else's work, and has senior management convinced he's the most important member of the team.
