RB David Montgomery, DET (1 Viewer)

The only RB duo in @NFL history to each total 800+ scrimmage yards and 9+ TDs through the first 10 games of any season:

- @Lions RBs

Montgomery and Gibbs have combined for the highest # of rushing TDs this season on any team, with 18 total for the pair. Monty has 10 and Gibbs has 8.

The next highest pair has 13: Derrick Henry (13) and Justice Hill (0).

Sorry, should have specified rushing TDs. Hill's were on receptions.

David Montgomery has become the third Lions RB to rush for 10 TDs in consecutive seasons.
  1. Billy Sims 1980-81
  2. Barry Sanders 1989-91, 1995-97
  3. David Montgomery 2023-24
5th in TDs last season, currently 3rd this season.

Other counting stats are down:
  • att/g has declined from 15.6 to 13.7
  • ypc from 4.6 to 4.3
  • yds/g from 72.5 (6th) to 59.5
OTOH, his rushing success rate 57.7% (2nd only to Gibbs) and receiving success rate 65.2% are both career highs.

His production in the passing game is WAY up, albeit slightly below his CHI numbers when he was the bell cow.

Dunno if Imma trust him with that injury on 3 days rest, in what should be a completely uncompetitive game against Chicago.

I'll keep an eye on it, but I may explore other options.

The Detroit Lions are 9-0 in games when Sonic, aka Jahmyr Gibbs, and Knuckles, aka David Montgomery, both score.

I can’t believe I have this problem but I have to choose between Montgomery, Taylor and Walker. Can only use one. I like Montgomery best for a td but the others could get better yardage…

I just cant risk this. For a start they probably game planned for a lower workload for him and secondly, if the game gets out of hand he will sit early.

I have options in most of my leagues. The only place I am starting him in in a short roster dynasty league over Ray Davis or Singletary.

Benching him in favor of Dowdle, who has a true workhorse role right now against a poor NYG defense, in a game that should remain competitive throughout.

Craig Reynolds worth a pickup?
Probably not. If anything, this makes an already valuable Gibbs even more so.
Yeah, Gibbs might become 2022-2023 CMC, or it makes Goff a 40+ pass attempt guy (which might be necessary given the defensive injuries) which would make ARSB arguably WR2 overall and put LaPorta and JaMo up a notch from where they were.

Lions have Bears/49ers left, which might be 2 teams that have given up a bit but also might not be.

So who replaces him? They need the pounder. Gibbs won't hold up
He only needs to hold up two more weeks :) Even though that was in jest, I wouldn't worry about whether Gibbs can hold up....he can.
Yeah, people say he's on the smaller side for a RB which is true but not like an Achane. We don't have positive evidence that be can handle 30 touches regularly, but we don't have any reason to believe he can't.

"MCL injury"

Given the December timing, do we have any idea if this affects his availability for next season?
Next season should be fine. LCL is the lesser concern, typically. I’m assuming he’s going to opt for surgical repair. Timeline is like 6 months?

I’m not too worried about him for 2025.

The Lions took 2 big hits to their defense, losing their nose tackle and a defensive back. Between that & losing their grind-it-out & short yardage back, I think they’re a little less poised to make a deep playoff run.

Monty missed a game last year, Gibbs had 31 touches for 189 yards. Gibbs was no worse for wear the next week when Monty returned, going 14-77-2 with 3 catches.

I just find it hard to believe Gibbs will just take up the workload from here on out. They like the two back thing, and have been very consistent with it. i would think they would want Gibbs hitting on all cylinders going into the playoffs. Giving him 30 touches a game seems like a good recipe to get him dinged and not being able to fully use his explosiveness.....my .02 anyway

He’s not toting the rock 30 times, Reynolds will definitely be involved.

But Gibbs getting 16-20 rushes and 4-5 targets a game will absolutely win leagues. Not to mentioned the majority of the GL work.

Lions have already shown what the utilization will look like when Monty is out. No mystery to solve.

Craig Reynolds & Sione Vaki will get some work, but Jah will be a bell cow.
Yeah, I’m much more concerned with the 3 defensive hits they took.

They’re gonna have to win shootouts. Went deep with a terrible D last year.

Right now I’m worried about how to beat Chicago.

Vaki is good sized and loves contact, supposed to be an excellent receiver. Probably gonna make the Pro Bowl as a STer, kid is really strong. But he literally has like 150 lifetime snaps as an offensive player. Unlikely he or Reynolds see more than a handful of touches. But of the two, they’ll be more apt to trust the veteran IMO.
