I have seen improvement from McKinnon in pass protection every single season. He has gotten to the point where he is actually very good at pass protection now. He has gotten a bit better in this area every season.I think his 3 year transition that had its share of rough patches wouldn’t have happened. If he produced like he did in year one as he did last year it would be near impossible for you to trade for him in dynasty going into next year, given his athletic measurables. If a team like the 49ers gets ahold of him, I think he has the potential to be a top 5 redraft back in ‘18... anyway, back to Guice.
As a route runner he was very raw as a rookie. He has shown improvement in this area every season as well. I think he still needs improvement as a route runner and maybe he will still continue to get better there. He was not a good receiver early on in his career at all even though he has been touted for that role and compared to Darren Sproles since he was a rookie. He isn't Darren Sproles as a receiver yet. He has gotten better each season I think though.
As a runner I think he has improved some as well. I think he still lacks vision to see cut back lanes at times. This is somewhat related to his ability as a receiver as well. He just doesn't always have good spatial awareness that other players do. To be in the right place at the right time in order to maximize the play. There is no denying his physical ability, he just doesn't process what he is seeing quick enough to take full advantage of his athletic ability.
One of the things he has been coaches on is getting yards after contact. He has improved in this are of focus by the coaches.
Just some examples of how McKinnon has developed from college and while in the pros. He has gotten better every year and he is actually a very good RB in my opinion. I thought and still think he is a better RB than Latavius Murray for example.
Players do not always improve once they reach the pro level. I listed to Peterson talk about getting better as a receiver and blocker his whole career. No denying that Adrian Peterson has a great work ethic, but despite his efforts, he always had weaknesses in these areas that didn't improve. He did fix his issue with fumbling for the most part though.
It is hard to judge McKinnon from his performance in 2016 because the Vikings offensive line was historically bad that season. No RB was doing well behind that line including Peterson when he healthy briefly that year.
