RB Doug Martin, Free Agent (1 Viewer)

If they can lure a legitimate coordinator to this team the offense could turn around quickly. The potential of a hand picked QB and several weapons on offense should be enticing for some of the greater offensive minds. Hopefully...
Mariota plus picks at 2.1 and 3.1 will give them their choice of coaches.

With Newton out, it seems the Panthers offense will struggle, meaning Tampa's offense will be getting plenty of time on the field. Good day for Martin?

Your reading way too far into this

Rotoworld:

Doug Martin - RB - Buccaneers

Doug Martin rushed 14 times for 96 yards and caught a three-yard pass in the Bucs' Week 15 loss to the Panthers.

On the Buccaneers' first run play of the game, Martin busted a 64-yarder up the middle, Tampa Bay's longest run of the season. Unfortunately, Martin managed 30 yards on his final 13 carries. The Bucs' running game was ultimately ineffective against Carolina. Martin also "lost" ten touches to RBBC partner Charles Sims. Martin would be a weak flex play in Week 16 versus Green Bay.

Probably so
Or maybe not.
He got the right result, but he did read too much into it.

The read question is was this fools gold? or is Martin a target for a buy low next year?

Assuming they fix the line/offense or trade him sure. It was clearly proven over the year that this line would make any RB look terrible.

Rotoworld:

Doug Martin - RB - Buccaneers

Doug Martin rushed 19 times for 108 yards in the Bucs' Week 17 loss to the Saints.

Martin wasn't targeted in the passing game. Astoundingly, the 100-yard game was Martin's first of the year. That includes yards from scrimmage. Martin showed some juice in the open field, but his game-best, 45-yard run in the second quarter likely would have gone for a 52-yard touchdown two years ago. Banged up for long stretches this season, Martin ends up with a 3.68 YPC. He's the owner of a 3.63 mark on 261 carries since his electrifying rookie year. Martin will be the favorite for Tampa's between-the-tackles duties in 2015, but it's not a given. He's no longer a serious factor in the passing game.

Martin with Mariota at QB - reason for optimism or wishful thinking?
It seems the OL is the root of TB's rushing woes but if MM is competent, he can't hurt. Honestly as a Martin dynasty owner, my optimism is he gets cut/traded.

:fishing: sucking people back in with what his best performance in two years vs. a crappy Saints team. No chance I touch him on any team...no burst.

The line was really bad, McCown wasn't scaring anyone, and the offense had absolutely no imagination to it. Excuses, I know. He did break some big runs late in the season...

ya but running side by side with Rainey last year and this year Rainey looked better and more explosive and Rainey is a nobody in a grand talent scheme. Denard Robinson's line and QB sucked and he did ok and there are other examples if I spend 2 minutes thinking about it. I've seen enough to form my opinion on him....will he surprise me with a complete resurgance and become a top back again? Anything is possible but I'd put the probability at maybe 5%....I'll let someone else take that bet.

If Trestman comes aboard, I'd think the prospects for Martin would look good in ppr leagues unless they prefer Simms in the 3rd down role.

who says Trestman doesn't watch tape and see that he stinks and bring in someone, draft someone, start Rainey....with so much uncertainty in the organization and his inconsistency / poor performance over the past couple years, I don't know how anyone can pencil him in for any role with even a bit of confidence.

I meant if they bring him in as the OC, not the GM.

RB production is pretty dependent on surrounding cast unless you're the cream of the crop talent wise at the position.

How come Rainey and even James look so much better? RIchardson owners said the same thing for a long time. I have to believe they bring in another rb to take over, whether through the draft or free agency.

James had 19 carries. Outside of two games Rainey was in a 3rd down or change of pace role. He was inactive when Sims returned.

Rotoworld:

Doug Martin - RB - Buccaneers

ESPN Bucs reporter Pat Yasinskas expects Tampa Bay to use a committee approach at running back.
Injured most of the year and playing behind one of the league's worst offensive lines, Martin struggled to a sub-3.7 yards per carry average for the second straight season. He played better than those numbers indicate, however, and came on strong as he got healthy down the stretch. Martin has struggled to stay healthy and will lose passing-down work to second-year player Charles Sims, but those factors could make him a value pick this summer.

I am still a believer. More especially at his price now.

Also still haven't ruled out a draft pick trade maybe maybe a 3/4th round pick for a team looking for a RB. Dallas might make sense if they miss on a guy they are looking at. AZ/SD/BAL/Jets might make some sense also at that cost

Unfortunately, so far they haven't done anything to improve the OL.
No, they haven't, which is quite peculiar considering where they're likely to spend their first round pick.
Lucky for TB there will be very good talent available in round 2 and 3 along the Oline. At least where they're picking.

We can only hope. I thought they would do that last year when they drafted Austin Sefarian Jenkins and then Charles Sims. Fun players to have, but they're not too productive when the QB is on his back every other play.

Yes. And has been for quite a while.
I don't know what they could get for him if anything? We all know how the NFL is treating running backs lately. Especially RBs who've been unproductive lately. It's his walk year and his cap hit is small. They might as well keep him. With free agency looming he'll likely bring his best.
agreed. He likely wouldn't get a pick...more likely a player out of favor for another player out of favor swap.

Jets set to visit with RB Stevan Ridley; is Doug Martin an option?Excerpt:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be looking to trade Martin, whose star has faded after a brilliant rookie season -- 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2012. He ran for only 494 and 456 yards the last two seasons, with 3.7 and 3.6 per-carry averages, respectively. That's what you call a stunning drop-off, but let's take a closer look. His blocking deteriorated.

In 2012, Martin averaged 2.42 yards before contact, according to ESPN Stats & Information -- a stat that often reflects the effectiveness of the blocking in front of a running back. In 2014, Martin's average slipped to 1.90, meaning defenders got to him a half-yard sooner than before.

Clearly, Martin has ability. Is he worth a fourth-round pick in a trade? In 2013, the Jets dealt a fourth-rounder for Ivory, but they got him to sign a three-year contract. Martin has only one year left on his rookie contract ($1.3 million base), so it doesn't pay to surrender a draft pick for a one-and-done player -- unless they get him for seventh-rounder. They could extend his contract, but why would either side want to do that at this point?

The Jets' best bet is to tap into the draft talent, but if the first two days come and go with no running back, it might make sense to check into Martin.

I feel like I've been saying this (bolded) for years and constantly getting crap for it:

NumberFire has a new theory to explain the problem: Doug Martin's rookie season was a fluke, and he was never really that good to begin with.

In 2012 -- remember, this is his "good" season -- Martin finished with a Success Rate of 40.31%. Since 2000, among all running backs who successfully accumulated 10.00 or more Rushing Net Expected Points in a season with at least 100 carries (a sample of 130 running backs), that Success Rate ranks fifth worst.

He's not terrible, but he's not very good, either. Then again, nobody at that position is very good on this team, so he's still got a shot to be a value play this year if he can hold the job.

Rotoworld:

Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith said "we haven't seen the true Doug Martin yet."

It's hard to tell if Smith actually sees promise in his fourth-year running back or if he's simply trying to drive up Martin's trade value. Martin stormed onto the scene with a brilliant rookie season but injuries cost him most of the 2013 campaign. He followed that up with another dud in 2014. With free agency around the corner, it's now or never for Martin. We're far from sold Martin will be the Bucs' 2015 starter.

Rotoworld take:

The Bucs did not pick up the 2016 fifth-year option on RB Doug Martin.

It was an easy decision for the Bucs, who know there's no way Martin will be worth $5.621 million in 2016. He's sputtered badly over the last two seasons, fighting injuries while averaging just 3.63 YPC and struggling badly in pass protection. Still, Martin will only battle Charles Sims, Bobby Rainey and Mike James for carries this year after the Bucs failed to address the position in free agency or the draft. The Muscle Hamster remains the tentative favorite for early-down work by default, even if reports continue to swirl that the team is high on Sims.

PewterReports' Scott Reynolds said Doug Martin stayed with the Bucs because new OC Dirk Koetter "wanted him back." Bucs GM Jason Licht mentioned in a radio interview earlier this offseason Koetter liked what he saw from Martin on tape. Though Lovie Smith and the front office appear ready to move on from the oft-injured running back, Martin may have found an ally in Koetter. Martin will battle second-year RB Charles Sims for lead duties in training camp. May 30 - 10:57 AM Source: Pewter

Rotoworld:

Doug Martin has been getting first-team reps at OTAs.

Martin has the inside track to remain the early-down starter over Charles Sims, who averaged 2.8 YPC as a rookie. "He's on the first team like he’s always been," coach Lovie Smith said of Martin. "He's one of our guys, he's our running back. He's showing up and getting good work. It’s as simple as that." 26 years old, Martin will be worth a mid-round gamble in 2015 fantasy drafts.

It might have been fun to see him in a new situation, and I am not sure he did himself any favors.
How did he 'choose' to stay with the Bucs?
I'm with CSTU in not understanding the bolded. He wasn't a free agent, the Bucs just didn't exercise for 2016 at his contract value. NEXT year he will have a choice.

That said, the OC's support for Martin is something to watch here...sometimes that all it takes. He may not be as good as he showed his rookie year, but don't think he's nearly as bad as last 2 seasons would suggest either. Starting to feel that it's not time to write him off just yet, could be in for a decent bounceback year.

Rotoworld:

Doug Martin has slimmed down this offseason.

Martin expects to play between 220-225, but has dropped five-percent body fat. The Bucs have been getting Martin first-team reps ahead of Charles Sims. Martin is a good bet to improve on last year's 3.7 YPC behind the Bucs revamped offensive line.
