RB Eric Gray, NYG (1 Viewer)

Immediately slots into my late round targets now. I know the NYG won’t score like 2023 Rams, but this guy could be the 2024 Kyren Williams everybody is looking for. He’s a Singletary injury away from major playing time. Even without injury, Singletary isn’t the type of uber talented RB that can’t just lose his starting job outright. The pedigree is there. 3x Mr. Football in the state of Tennessee during high school ball. Went on to have solid sophomore season at Tennessee and then a great senior season at Oklahoma. I’m hopping on this train.
Gray is a decent lotto ticket given how ambiguous the RB situation is. Doesn’t compare at all to Kyren though. Kyren was the known RB2 of the Rams headed into the season, but people were already expecting a down year from that offense especially when Kupp got hurt before the season. Also was a false sense of security regarding Akers because he finished the previous season strong. Jourdan Rodrigue had been just about the only beat reporter who picked up on Kyren getting more play than people would expect, and McVay surprised everyone in Week 1 when he finally showed his hand.

There seems to be more positive buzz around the rookie Tracy, so while I wouldn’t expect him to surprisingly get RB1 touches in Week 1 over Singletary he’d be the low cost Giants RB I’d speculate on first. But depending on roster size I can see stashing Gray as an option.

I guess I should mention my league has deep benches. Deeper than most leagues. He’s obviously not a draft candidate in your typical 5 bench slot leagues.

Oh yeah for deep benches you gotta go with “any RB on a roster”, and Gray has as good a chance as any of the projected third string guys of seeing playing time. I’ll like him more if he beats out Tracy for the backup job, and performances like he had in preseason Week 1 should help his case.

Has everyone forgotten how bad he has looked so far in his career?

His career is all of one year long so far. The aforementioned Kyren Williams (another NFL 5th rounder) did nothing his first season either. Not saying he’s going to be the next Kyren, in fact I argued against it. But some people are just too quick to write off players who don’t immediately hit. Sometimes players develop and improve.

Yep, and sometimes that 2.8 ypc is real.

Giants OL was putrid last year and even though I'm basing this purely on Hard Knocks but there is reason to hope the OL play will be much much better. Jones might actually be a decent late QB and Tracy is getting the hype as a pass catcher and might be the 3rd down 2 minute guy IDK. In PPR that's fantastic and with the possibility of taking over if Singletary goes down. Hard not to hedge that with Gray but if Tracy gets the 3rd down role then Gray is basically unrosterable in most formats. But I wouldn't put too much stock in last year's stats.

Welp, always hate to see injuries but it doesn't sound good for TT Jr. For those of us that hung onto Gray the slice of the pie just got bigger. With a better OL and offense in general with a little bit of luck maybe he finds his way into our fantasy lineups this year.

I haven't forgotten how bad Kyren looked as a rookie, paid no attention to him last year because I had him on my redraft in 2022.
  • 10 G 35-139-4.0-0 & 9-76-8.4-0 on 12 targets

I'm not picking him up, dude is JAG

  • 12 G 228-1144-5.0-12 & 32-206-6.4-3 on 48 targets

I might have made a big mistake.....

Giants RB Tyron Tracey was carted off the practice field Tuesday with an apparent leg injury.
Tracey, per Giants beat writers, went down during a kickoff drill. He was seen wearing an air cast on his injured leg before being carted off. If the injury is as serious as it seems, Eric Gray would likely slot in as New York’s No. 2 running back behind starter Devin Singletary. Singletary would seem to have a lock on the lead back role if Tracey misses an extended period. Tracey, a fifth round pick in the 2024 draft, was phenomenal in the team’s first preseason game, gaining 72 yards on nine touches.
Gray stock rising.

Feel for TT & his shareholders. Gray might be flex-worthy. He's looked really solid in on-field play so far this preseason.

Have to think the Giants will be in the market for another RB for depth purposes. If looking at RB's with history with the coaching staff, Latavius Murray worked with the current RB coach Joel Thomas while they were in New Orleans. He's old at 34 but could be had cheap as their RB3. But I think the arrow points up for Eric Gray as that's one less obstacle to playing time for him. I don't have Gray on any teams but I'm keeping an eye on this situation, even if it's one of the lowest upside RB rooms in fantasy.

I also like Singletary a lot more as a zero RB target than when TT was looming.

Rumors of Tyrone Tracy's death have been greatly exaggerated. Thankfully, as @menobrown noted in the TT thread, this is now being reported as an ankle sprain, rather than a more serious season-ending injury. This may still keep Tracy out for an extended period, depending on the severity, but it is a relief that the injury is apparently not a serious knee injury or ruptured Achilles.

Any time away for Tracy opens a window of opportunity for Gray, no doubt.

Right up to the point where Gray’s 2.8 necessitates someone else.

Wow - the rare air cast false alarm. Guess it was precautionary, but still sounds like at least a high ankle.’

My impression is the Giants like him a lot. Before any of this Tyrone Tracy business, he was allegedly getting first team reps in camp.

Seems like a situation where they would have been comfortable with him being their starter, but they were kind of obligated to bring in a veteran. His college highlights look fine.

He'll get you what is blocked and seems to be a pretty instinctive runner with good vision.

He is in a similar situation as Deneric Prince over in Kansas City where I think both would excel in the starting gig and are well liked by their coaching staff but it's just not their time yet, both guys were sprinkled in with the first team offense. I think he's going to get more carries than people think. Always helps when coach drafted and likes you, just feels like they want him to be a "thing".

BRIAN DABOLL: Two guys that do the right thing on and off the field. Where Tommy (DeVito) came from in rookie camp to where he was playing last year to understanding a lot of the nuances of our offense, I think he's made strides. And I have thought (Eric) Gray has gotten stronger as camp went on. He made a couple nice plays tonight. Two young players, keep developing them.

Being mentioned in the same thought process as Tommy Cutlets is not a boon to your prospects...

I know you're just trying to be funny, but he was responding to a interviewer's question after the last preseason game. He was just wondering the question he was asked, I wouldn't read too much into that!

Q: Can you talk about the progression you see from their rookie year to now with (running back Eric) Gray and (quarterback Tommy) DeVito?
