RB Jahmyr Gibbs, DET (6 Viewers)

I’m not sure if this needs to be a bigger story or not but Gibbs really showed a revealing picture of their play calls for protections. I am curious to think what the Lions fans on this board think.

Not a Lions fan, but I’m going to answer that anyway. It was stupid, and the worst case scenario is that they have to spend time changing and then re-memorizing the names they’re yelling out. Those were very visible and memorable. On the other hand, to have any advantage the other team would have to get the defenders to memorize what name goes with what scheme. Given the limited number of hours in a week, you wonder if the other team would even spend time on it, and if so, I also wonder how much a blocking scheme can be beaten with pre-snap knowledge of said scheme.

Even though it’s likely a nothingburger, it was still stupid to do that.

Who is Ellen Winfrey, by the way? And note they didn’t deadname Caitlyn Jenner. So progressive, guys!

And all that just gives me pause and sort of proves my initial point. I don’t have the picture up and I remember two of the scheme names. Put it together with the scheme and you’ve got a problem for the Lions.

crosspost from the team thread:

Justin Rogers asked Dan Campbell about it yesterday - last Q of the Saturday presser

Dan has seemed pretty exhausted this week, at least by his own manic standards.

some Reddit nerds had a pretty good breakdown of what's on the board and why it's a bit of a nothingburger

not ideal obviously but also NBD - IMHO, maybe I'm offbase here

I sent beat writer Justin Rogers (Detroit Football Network) a DM via Substack yesterday re: the Gibbs social media “controversy”. He didn’t reply but posted this broadcast DM to paid subscribers (I’m sure many others pinged him about the same thing.)

I've found it amusing the Gibbs' social media post has become such a big deal, but you have to realize it's because he's a star player, and more importantly, fantasy relevant. If Craig Reynolds would have posted the same photo, my initial question would have been the same, but the reaction would have been contained to some mild local interest and zero acknowledgement on the national level.
Here's the recap, since I chose not to write anything despite asking that initial question to Campbell.
1. Campbell genuinely didn't know before I asked him about it. Don't try to force something that's not there. This isn't him acting or galaxy braining the situation. Campbell is both highly aware, informed and above all else, genuine and honest in his media sessions.
2. Yesterday, someone else asked him if he needed to alter the game plan/play calls going forward and he offered a very rare "no comment." That's interesting in itself, but probably more because he just didn't want to talk about it any more.
3. It came up again today on 97.1 and Campbell's answer shows why he's beloved by this fan base. "I don’t really give a crap. If we’re gonna lose because of code words, then we’re not good enough anyway. I think we’ll just post the whole freaking playbook and every code word we’ve got. It doesn’t matter. It’s not gonna hurt us." Also said it's been addressed with the player and he's already reached the point where he's using it to joke around with Gibbs.
As was the intent with my original question, I wanted to know/confirm how Campbell handles these minor transgressions with a young player. It's a new age with managing a roster through the social media age. It offers an opportunity to highlight his coaching/teaching style, which we already know from countless other examples runs in stark contrast to the last guy in his position.

"Fantasy relevant" above is indeed probably why it's a bigger story than one would think. Especially when it's the end of the fantasy regular season and owners may be concerned about potential discipline/benching.

They asked Dan on the radio today if there would be any disciplinary action.

"For Gibbs? Yeah, OK. [deadpan] I'm gonna bench him because I'm mad he was on social media."

He said he was teasing him about it yesterday, it's been cleaned up, nothing to add, we're done talking about it, etc.

The dream scenario for all of you Gibbs owners who are still alive in these playoffs is happening. Might as well just etch your name onto the league trophies now.

🏎️
Love the sound of it (sorry but yes I'm indirectly taking pleasure in Montgomery's injury; sue me, punch me, whatever it takes to feel better), but don't want to get too excited, yet. No official word on his status yet.

as Gibbs owner news gets better with Monty out and losing defensive players and fighting that key top seed just means more shoot outs and greater uptick chance for Gibbs. I just didn't want Lions to get up big early then sit key players. Should also help Jamo which I usually plug as flex (18 team league).
Increase chance doesn't mean it's a lock as we all know. We just want odds to go up in our favor.

Definitely one of the leading contenders, eh.

3 critical games to decide the NFC North and the #1 seed, so unlikely they'll be resting anyone.
I have a really bad feeling about this.

Is anyone not starting Gibbs? If so I urge you to check out the Who Should I Start thread. Just run your decision by some friends, colleagues, comrades, acquaintances in a safe space.
Why would anyone not be starting Gibbs?

Because they have a really bad feeling.
I posted that in response to Da Guru's post above mine.
Roll with Gibby.
Seeing it written down like that, made me wonder if rolling with Gibby wasn't obvious for everyone and it kinda short circuited my brain.

  2. 2.
the percentage deducted from a gambler's winnings by the organizers of a game.

I was kidding. I am mostly just curious why you say daily isn't gambling? You put money in and win or lose money based on your outcomes, right?

Is there a free tier or something?

Daily is so filled with luck and the house take is so high that its in a tier of it's own.

I used to be able to win there by chasing overlay, but those days are pretty much gone. Where I used to have maybe a $1000 in play each week, now it's just a handful of bucks on a single game tourney a few times a year for fun like buying a lotto ticket.

I'll probably open a FD account to wager on things like @BobbyLayne suggested. Just so busy this year that I don't want to burn my first time customer bonuses until I have a pretty free week to work the bonus dollars.

I'm saying that one is pretty regulated and the house takes a reasonable cut, the other is more akin to a lottery.
