RB Joe Mixon, HOU (3 Viewers)

I had pick 12 in a ppr league and took him at pick 25..first pick 3rd round(NFFC..3rr). I had Beckham and Mcaffrey so I love him as my number two. I'd be a little concerned if he was my number 1. He was overweight last year but has slimmed down. He should at minimum return RB 2 numbers and has RB1 upside.

The offensive line should be a little better but will still be one of the worst in the league. I'm hoping Mixon's talent/John Ross emergence wins out this year.

Mixon wasn’t afforded that luxury on any of his carries. 

The issue with Mixon this season will be his horrendous O-line,  not Gio Bernard.  Gio is great at his role, but physically has no chance of becoming a workhorse back over the course of a season.  The hope here is that the O-line, Dalton/Ross/AJ/Eifert can get the pass game going and loosen things up for Mix and Gio.

I agree with you that the biggest concern is the OL (specifically RG RT) but I think Gio is a close second. Gio is only a slight tick behind Mixon on ability and like you said is good at his role. That limits the upside because this isn’t a case where he’s going to now be given every down status in yr2. This also isn’t a case where the Bengals coaches are burying their heads in the sand and giving work to a vet and will eventually come around. Gio has been really good for them and they’re not going to give him less anytime soon.

Might require some patience. Might not. I like him as a RB2 in redraft. There's upside there, yet he won't kill you if he has a slow season.

I'm a believer in the dynasty talent though, and I'll go down with the ship unless he starts actually looking bad.

I don't see the JAG-iness people talk about. I've seen so many RBs over the years that it's hard to impress me.

The lateral agility that Mixon has at 220+ pounds is something that you just don't see in every back, or even in every draft class.

Even though the numbers weren't there last year, I think the talent really jumps out at you:

As a previous Marshawn dynasty owner this is exactly the situation for Mixon.

He's a good talent on a team trending downward based on their inability to draft well the past few years as well as their inability to do anything dynamic with respect to their offensive play calling.

The 2015 draft in particular stands out to me where they drafted a duo of tackles Jake Fisher and Cedric Ogbuehi looking towards future returns but have had nearly zero return on investment in those picks when they really really needed help on the offensive line.

He had the nice catch and run but yeah mediocre might be kind. 13-24 rushing is Ronald Jones territory and hes been murdered.

Yep - I do blame the line more than Mixon, but it’s possible his weight loss wasn’t as good for him as originally believed. 

I try not to read into preseason too much, hit by the time I’d drafted on the 25th I’d seen enough to no longer want him in the 2nd. Drafting from 1 he was almost always there at 2.12/3.01, but I just didn’t see enough to separate him from the guys I’d be able to get at the 4/5 turn, and the WR depth fell off a cliff after the 2/3 turn (ended up WR/WR -> R.Freeman) 

I still think he’s a talented back, but I had some Bengals last year & it was disappointing. Dalton looks a lot better, but again, that’s preseason. And it’s hard to look worse than Dalton’s 2017.

Pick 25 is the 2-3 turn. I think you got hm at pick 36, which is about 12 picks past his ADP, depending on whe you drafted. At that price it’s hard to pass on him.

I get why you took him - he was a relative bargain. But he probably fell that far because he’s looked like hot garbage. 

I'd probably have done the same, you have a nice 1-2-3 - but they’re all fairly risky. Kind of a boom or bust top of your lineup.

The OL is my biggest concern there.  They truly look lost. 

The good news is that IMO the Bengals could be a top 5 defense - the pieces are there. This bodes well for volume, and should keep Gio at bay. 

Thats another concern with Mixon - the Bengals love Bernard, and will continue to use him as a receiver, which cuts into Mixon’s value a bit. 

Again - he was a steal where you got him, but there’s some risk for sure. 

 
Not only looked strong and patient, but I loved his involvement in the passing game.  Relieves some anxiety about Bernard.

 
That’s the guy I saw when I drafted him at 1.3 in my rookie draft last year. Could really help filling the hole Bell left in that team

17-1 carry split between Mixon and Bernard is phenomenal news for redraft owners. Suggests that Cincy sees him as the clear guy.

I've said this earlier in this thread.  Bernard was never designed or intended to be "the guy".  He's seen fewer and fewer touches on average per game pretty much since his rookie season.  The only time he was ever the guy was due to an injury to who Cinci saw as their dominant running back.  He always had a primary RB ahead of him (most of the time it was Jeremy Hill).  Mixon is a great pass catching RB--so it's not even guaranteed that Bernard gets full control of those duties. Bernard is a nice player and is a great guy for a team to have as a talented back up RB.  Even in games where he gets more action--there is enough meat on the bones for the both of them.  Mixon looked great today.  As much as I preached getting him-- I only have him in one league as my draft position in most leagues made it unfavorable to draft him.  Congrats to those who have him.  

 
Bengals coach Marvin Lewis "liked" Joe Mixon's number of catches (four) in Week 1 and believes he can carry the ball up to 22 times per game.

Mixon handled the ball 21 times in his dominant performance against the Colts. It would appear Lewis would be comfortable with him in the 25 range. Looking slippery and explosive after slimming down over the offseason, Mixon is ready to take a massive sophomore leap. He gets the Ravens — who have considerably more defensive talent than the Colts — on Thursday Night Football for Week 2.

I love the advice in the daily FBG email this morning:

Mixon responded to a large workload in Week 1 against the Colts. The second-year back had 17 carries and five receptions in the season opener, showing that he could take on more if asked. Fantasy GMs can lock Mixon in as a steady RB2 with this type of workload.

RB2? Only 3 RBs averaged more than 22 touches a game last year.

 
Looked very strong tonight. Couple of excellent runs brought back by holding calls and they had nothing to do with the run. 

A good sign that he was able to go back in after the knee injury - twice. 

Gio got used a lot more in the passing game though, so last week's massive touch share was probably an aberration.

I imagine game script and knee injury contributed a little to the lack of targets for Mixon. He is dangerous as a wr and they will continue to give him opportunities. That being said I would rather have Gio spelling him than see him get 25+ touches every week.

His fantasy output was a bummer but he looked good last night.

But I'm mildly worried about the knee. Curious to know type of knee injury he is dealing with, seems like an odd one. I never saw him limp, look hindered, and unusual to be so up and down. Just hoping this is not a season long issue.

Short week after carrying a big workload week 1. Dalton was on fire the first half- when him and AJ are clicking like that- it’s hard to blame them for sticking with that until the second half.  I thought Mixon looked very good on a short week against a pretty solid defense. With 10 days to recover- I’m thinking he should be okay.

Don't think anyone expected a big time in regards to Fantasy points vs Baltimore.... he ran great though and that bodes well for the future and his role.... not like anyone predicted AJ Green's crazy night either.

Mixon told reporters after the win he only entered the game again on his knee injury because the game was so close:

“I had to talk myself to going back in,” Mixon said. “It’s mental toughness. It was real hard… It felt weird. The knee was hurting. The mental side of it is you always want to play 100 percent. When it’s bothering you, it’s hard mentally. I just had to check back in mentally and tough it out physically.”

Wasn't there a replay at one point that showed him getting kicked or knocking knees or taking a shin to the knee? Whatever the case, hoping it's closer to the bruise end of the spectrum.

 
Now Mixon needs surgery. 

The #Bengals fear RB Joe Mixon will need arthroscopic surgery to clean up the knee he injured in last night’s win over the #Ravens and miss some time, sources tell @MikeGarafolo and me. He’ll get a second opinion first.

Need to know what sort of knee injury it is first.

If it was a ligament tear, it's hard to believe they let him go back in the game when Bernard was playing so well.

Now I'm kicking myself for not picking up Gio as a handcuff. Sigh.

 
In my 14 Team league in the first 4 rounds I drafted:

Freeman

Mixon

Mckinnon

Baldwin

Wat do? thinking about picking up felix jones and zac stacy

I think Walton is more so Gio insurance than Mixon insurance for CIN. I could see Tra Carson getting some work in between the tackles. It's hard to say how much anyone will be used, the situation reminds me of the current one in ATL with Coleman, Smith and Hill.

Bengals’ RB Joe Mixon has a small particle in his knee that was dislodged Thursday night and is scheduled to be removed with a procedure Friday, per source. The procedure is expected to sideline Mixon two weeks, per source.
