RB Jonathan Taylor, IND (3 Viewers)

You’re right, but why do you compare him to Miller?

Tex
Runs with the same patience and vision to me.  Similar build, not as laterally quick as others while running, but can do it as a 1 cut type of runner.  Not great at combining moves together all point me to Miller or Hyde.  I just said Miller cause his career is probably a little better than Hyde's has been.

Taylor has such good vision and patience and I think he's more dynamic than Miller or Freeman.  I think Leveon Bell, at least how he runs the ball, is a better comparison.  Taylor's not at that level as a receiver yet.

When the dust settles, there are at least 4 or 5  RBs that everyone likes and situation will play a role in determining order in dynasty drafts.  This is one of the hardest RB drafts to determine who you pick.  These RBs are Swift, Taylor, Etienne, Dobbins, and Harris.  Good f'n luck with that.

In order of the ones I'm most confident in

1. Swift  2. Harris  3. Dobbins  4. Etienne  5. Taylor

Etienne is still my 1.02 right now though and a tier below Swift (along with the other 3).  Landing spot will have a lot to do with them for sure, I put a lot of weight into how they look in combine drills as well.  Miles Sanders last year looked outstanding there and vaulted up boards.

I like them all which makes it so much more difficult.

It's hard think of a comparison. The instant acceleration and minimal wasted motion sort of reminds me of Darrell Henderson.

Rotoworld:

Wisconsin junior RB Jonathan Taylor declared for the 2020 NFL Draft.

Taylor made the announcement on his Twitter account. It's far from a surprise, as the 5-foot-11, 219-pound tailback was one of the most productive tailbacks in college football history in his three years with the Badgers. He ran for at least 1,900 yards in each campaign, and he also took a large step forward as a pass-catcher with 26 catches in 2019 after having just 16 combined as a freshman and sophomore. There were some analysts who have questions about his upside, but he has one of the highest floors in this draft class, and likely answered most of those questions during the '19 season. A selection in the first 32 picks cannot be ruled out.

This is going to be a really hard draft. I’ve been preparing the last three years for the 2020-2021 drafts, stacking up on picks. I’m still trying to get the 2020 1.06  pick and 2021 picks now especially now that 2020 is getting all the hype. While true but 2021 looks damn good too! Hitting in these picks can set the tone for the next 5 to 10 years so it’s make it or break it time.

Scenario

J. K. Dobbins goes to Chiefs

D'Andre Swift goes to Redskins

Jonathan Taylor goes to the Jets

Najee Harris goes to the Ravens

Travis Etienne goes to the Dolphins

Rank em'
On the subject of top tier college RBs, i got a league which slowdrafts for 2020 as soon as the Super Bowl ends. Pretty sharp guys - Jacobs was drafted in the 3rd rd last year when i (who dont watch college sports) still thought Damien Harris was the consensus #1. I drafted Saquon on the 1/2 elbow the year before & he wouldnt have lasted much longer. Under those terms, where would y'all draft Dobbins, Swift & Taylor without knowing where they're going?

The Athletic's Dane Brugler ranks Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor third among running backs prior to the NFL Scouting Combine in the 2020 NFL Draft class.

Taylor comes in behind just Ohio State's J.K. Dobbins and Georgia's D'Andre Swift. As Brugler notes, there's no denying Taylor's production, as he ran for at least 1,900 yards in each of his three years with the Badgers. He notes that the 5-foot-11, 219-pound tailback is more than a north-south runner, and his ability to redirect makes it difficult for defenders to square up on him. The analyst does note the same concerns we've heard about Taylor's ball security (one fumble every 52.9 touches), and that he lacks reps in the passing game. Still, assuming he tests well at the combine and his pro day, it's hard to imagine that Taylor won't be one of the first tailbacks selected in this class -- maybe even the first.

I am somewhat surprised Taylor hasn’t generated more buzz here. Twitter also appears to be down on JT as well.

His college stats read like a video game. Incredible. He may ultimately be #1 on my board.

There seem to be somewhat separate communities of support for Taylor and Swift as the top RB (with Dobbins getting support here and there as well). That’s my purely anecdotal impression. I’ve been listening to podcasts like Dynasty Blueprint thank you to @miqws for posting those), Breakout Finder — and the hosts and several of their guests (e.g. some writers for PFF) have Taylor as the clear 1.1, in the same prospect category as Zeke, Gurley. The division seems to be film guys for Swift and analytics guys for Taylor?

I don’t know. I’m not a flag-planting type. I want to see combine and more importantly draft capital/landing spot before I sort out Taylor/Swift/Dobbins. I like all 3 a lot.

I agree- I think it's just so tight between the top 3 backs (and to some there is Akers and CEH are on par with them) that nobody is overly excited any individual one just yet. Combine, draft capital and team fit is needed to get too excited about any one.

I'll plant my Moss as the RB1 flag here.

That said, I think Taylor is the best runner in the class. He just profiles as a 2-down RB only, and needs to go to a team that will use him as such. He'd be a great fit in Houston, as they have Duke Johnson for all the pass catching work, but it'd be pretty bold, for a team without a 1st or 3rd round pick to use their top pick on a RB.

While your Moss take is a very outlier take, it's just more evidence as to why there isn't a huge wave of hype for Edwards right now. This isn't a Saquon/Zeke level prospect because I agree Taylor has major question marks about his pass game aptitude and that is a massive limitation in 2020.

It's interesting because DLF forums are in love with Taylor

PFF loves Taylor

Twitter hates Taylor, and possibly even Swift. Loves Dobbins and CEH

FBG forums seems to like Swift...
I just have all 5 in one wide open tier. I need more info to separate them. I don't know what kind of athlete Moss, but with a good combine I could easily see him in the top discussion.

It's fun to plant your flag prior to athletic testing and draft results.

The order will congeal as more information becomes available.

I don't mind flag planting.  Swift is the best.  Taylor I'm torn because people I listen to love him, but from my eyes only, not a big fan.  Same people I listen to, not big fans of Dobbins, my eyes say he's great.  CEH is the biggest question, fun to watch, love the talent, not sure if he can handle a full workload.  More situation dependent for me on CEH.

Just texted with two scouts on Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor’s second stab at the 40. One had him at 4.35. The other had him at 4.33. At 226 pounds. 😳😳😳

PPR makes it a much tougher choice I think.  I'm leaning Akers or Swift with Taylor stuck at 3.
True, PPR impacts but I think Taylor can do enough there for it not to be an issue. I tend to think the team that drafts him will likely view him as a workhorse. Interesting you have Akers in that same area/tier - he’s a full tier or two below for me but I might just be missing it with him.

Can you unpack this for me? Maybe I need to watch more film. I watched a couple of his games last year and saw him make a couple difficult catches. He caught 26 passes last year, which is a decent number in college. I had him as the #1 RB going into the combine and his performance leaves more comfortable with that ranking. What am I missing?

The way I see Taylor's receiving ability is replaceable.  It's really as simple as that.  He's not bad, he's not great at it, just kind of meh.  I don't doubt he can perform as a pass catcher but it'll depend a lot on which offensive coordinator he gets on draft day that will either utilize him in a full workload or be a rotational type of dominant rusher.  That's what I think he is, a dominant rusher of the football.  I think Akers and Swift can do more from a versatility standpoint although it depends on their landing spot as well.  But their landing spot doesn't dictate what kind of role they have, because it could be 1 or the other or both (rusher/receiver).  That makes them less landing spot dependent to maintain a floor IMO.  Taylor can only be a rusher with the possibility of being a receiver depending on who the HC/OC is.

Rotoworld:

Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Taylor (5'10/226) was expected to come through with a sharp time on Friday and so it came to pass. His run was tops among all backs through the first rotation (second runs are currently underway). While running back as a whole may get blocked out from the first round in April, Taylor will very much be in play for a second-round selection this spring. We'll be interested to see how the Wisconsin standout performs in pass-catching drills later on in the evening.
