RB Roschon Johnson, CHI (1 Viewer)

You know it's a deep name draft when Kayshon Boutee, pronounced the way everyone wants it to be called, is relegated to a 2nd round pick.

I was chanting Muchindo Kapapa like a voodoo priest casting a spell before I even read the comment.

Feel like this guy will get drafted earlier in the NFL draft than most expect, and he will be a late riser in upcoming dynasty drafts.

Josh Norris @JoshNorris
Round 2 draft capital on Roschon Johnson would be seismic

He's an ideal RB3 in the NFL with his special teams background, and his strengths certainly open the door to a GL/high value touch role

Josh Norris @JoshNorris
Per @PFF_Mike, Roschon forced a missed tackle on 45% of his carries over the last two season, which was best in the country

I landed on a Wayne Gallman comp, which I know all of you are going to hate

So instead... what player does Roschon Johnson remind you most of?

  • SirVocea Dennis LB Pittsburgh
  • YaYa Diaby ED Louisville
  • Starling Thomas V CB UAB
  • Carrington Valentine CB Kentucky
  • Moro Ojomo DI Texas
  • DeMarvion Overshown LB Texas
  • Habakkuk Baldonado ED Pittsburgh
  • Kyu Blu Kelly CB Stanford
  • Henry To'oTo'o LB Alabama
  • Adetomiwa Adebawore ED Northwestern
These can’t all be real. At least half of these are key & Peele, right?

Not sure how I overlooked

Juice Scruggs C Penn State
I want the Niners to draft Juice Scruggs very much. I do not care if he can play.

All-Name Mock Draft (from Reddit)

  1. Carolina Panthers - QB Dresser Winn, University of Tennesee-Martin - The Panthers gave up a haul for the top pick this year, making it quite clear that they’re going up for a future franchise QB. Unfortunately, the all-name QB class this year is relatively weak, with only a couple of first round prospects. The Panthers nab the top guy here. Named after a piece of furniture with a last name that gives him an automatic +10 to his win(n) probability, Winn has been the odds-on favorite at this pick for months.
  2. Houston Texans - EDGE Wardalis “Duck” Ducksworth, Memphis - The first surprise of the draft comes early, as the Texans don’t draft a QB, instead opting for the best-name-available in edge rusher Wardalis Ducksworth. I don’t know what to say that his name doesn’t say for itself. A first name that I’m pretty sure nobody else in the world has, a last name that sounds like it comes from English royalty, and a pithy animal nickname. Ducksworth should be a menace to QBs for the next decade at least.
  3. Arizona Cardinals - DT Blessman Ta’ala, Hawai’i - Ta’ala has arrived to shower the Arizona defense with his blessings. Praise be to the bless man.
  4. Indianapolis Colts - QB Braxton Burmeister, San Diego State - This is probably a bit of reach, but the Colts QB situation is dire, and they think they have the roster to compete if they can find the right QB. Burmeister provides alliteration and a silly-sounding last name. His name could be the comic relief in a Marvel comic, and that’s good enough to take a shot on here.
  5. Seattle Seahawks - OG Poutasi Poutasi, Northern Arizona University - Seahawks need help on the interior OL, and this guy has the name so nice they named it twice.
  6. Detroit Lions - DT Maximillian “Maxi” Hradecny, Duquesne University - 10 dollars to the first American to correctly pronounce “Hradecny”. Between that word scramble and the regal “Maximillian” which he has hilariously shortened to the name of a feminine hygiene product, this is a 10/10 nose tackle prospect.
  7. Las Vegas Raiders - K Briggs Bourgeois, Southern Miss - Maybe I’ve overplayed the joke at this point by using it in every one of these drafts, but “Raiders get a specialist with their first round pick” is an objectively hilarious meme, and I will listen to no comments to the contrary. Briggs Bourgeois has come to kick the dreams of the proletariat.
  8. Atlanta Falcons - CB Devious Christmon, Bethel University TN - This year’s version of Divine Deablo, I’m pretty sure that Devious Christmon is the antichrist hiding in plain sight. But he should be a hell of a CB until the day that he kickstarts the end of days.
  9. Chicago Bears - OT Ye’Majesty Sanders, Jacksonville State - Ye’Majesty’s 26.5 inch arms aren’t going to stop him from claiming dominion over the league which is his by birthright. Bow down to your majesty Ye’Majesty Sanders.
  10. Philadelphia Eagles - EDGE Shaheem Haltiwanger, Towson - This year’s winner of the “most Key & Peele name of the draft” award makes his way to Philadelphia.
  11. Tennesee Titans - WR Yo’Heinz Tyler, Ball State - The first receiver comes off the board, and he’s a good one. Every time you say his first name, you greet a ketchup bottle, and that’s just fantastic.
  12. Houston Texans - WR Mac Hippenhammer, Miami University (Ohio) - Having spurned the top QB prospects, Houston needs to surround their current QB room with more receiving talent. Hippenhammer’s name sounds like MC Hammer’s white alter ego.
  13. New York Jets - OT Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu, Oregon - I could totally be pronouncing his name wrong, but if I’m not, then “Sala” has 13 syllables in his name, and syllables count for a lot in this world.
  14. New England Patriots - CB Kyu Blu Kelly, Stanford - Kelly has two first names and no middle name, which is pretty cool. Also pretty confident that he is the only person in the world named “Kyu Blu”.
  15. Green Bay Packers - TE Maverick Wolfley, West Florida - The all-name tight end class is not very deep, but the Packers snag the clear top prospect. With a name like “Maverick,” he may need some disciplined coaching to keep him in line, but if that’s done right, Wolfley could be a perennial pro-bowler at the position.
  16. Washington Commanders - OT Jacky Chen, Pace University - Yes, his name is technically not Jackie Chan, but it’s going to sound like that every time the announcer says his name. And who wouldn’t want the Drunken Master protecting their QB’s blind side?
  17. Pittsburgh Steelers - CB Kortney Cox, Florida A&M - The Steelers snag the star of the hit 90s-00s sitcom Friends. I figured she’d be too old to play football at this point, but she had a relatively productive career with the Rattlers, so I’m certainly not in a position to age-shame.
  18. Detroit Lions - LB Seyddrick Lakalaka, San Diego State - The Lions continue to build their defense with a LB who was named by his mother while she was speaking tongues (probably).
  19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - S Chris Bacon, Bowling Green - I searched far and wide to find this guy’s middle name, but I couldn’t. However, I’m going to mock him here just in case his middle name starts with a P. There’s like, a 1/26 chance, right? And if it doesn’t, I’m sure the Bucs could convince him to legally change it.
  20. Seattle Seahawks - EDGE Habbakuk Baldonado, Pitt - A biblical prophet. This man knows what the offense is going to do before they do.
  21. Miami Dolphins - C Chandler Dolphin, Utah State - I am officially reinstating this previously forfeited pick because I absolutely had to mock the guy named Dolphin to the Dolphins. Sure, they have a center, but Connor Williams can always shift out to guard. Nobody should deny Dolphin to the Dolphins.
  22. Los Angeles Chargers - WR Chancellor Brewington, Nebraska - Chancellor Brewington sounds like the cartoonish rich kid bully who just moved to the TV small town from his mansion in Newport.
  23. Baltimore Ravens - CB De’Jahn “Nugget” Warren, Jackson State - I tend to avoid names that are only great because of their nicknames, but when you combine this guy’s first name with his nickname, it sounds like “dijon nugget”, which is delicious.
  24. MInnesota Vikings - LB Reidgee Dimanche, Stony Brook - I realize LB isn’t a top need for Minnesota, but there are too many good LB names, I was running out of slots, and it was at least listed as a secondary need. This is an incredible spelling of “Reggie,” and Dimanche is a fun last name to say as well.
  25. Jacksonville Jaguars - DT Muhindo Kapapa, University of San Diego - Try to say this name only once. You can’t. You say it once, and you want to say it again. And again. And again. Muhindo Kapapa.
  26. New York Giants - OG Will Lay III, Georgia Tech - Not only does he expect to lay, but he will lay, and he will do it thrice.
  27. Dallas Cowboys - RB Percy Agyei-Obese, James Madison - I know we all debate the value of RBs in the first round, but this man’s last name is obese. Obese. Ignore the fact that it is likely pronounced oh-beh-say. His name is obese.
  28. Buffalo Bills - LB Exree Loe, West Virginia - What the hell kind of name is Exree? The crazy thing is, I discovered that he’s not even the first college athlete named Exree from a college with “Virginia” in its name. What are the odds of that?
  29. Cincinnati Bengals - RB Israel Abinkanda, Pitt - A man with abs made out of anacondas with the power of a whole damn country should have no problem holding down the Cincy backfield with Joe Mixon quite possibly on his way out.
  30. New Orleans Saints - DT Zion Famer, Tiffin - The Saints need to beef up their interior DL, and who better to do it than a farmer from the Promised Land.
  31. Philadelphia Eagles - LB Bumper Pool, Arkansas - Like I mentioned above, I don’t like using nicknames, but here’s the thing. Bumper Pool legally changed his name to Bumper at age 16. No joke. Bumper Pool is his real government name.
  32. Kansas City Chiefs - EDGE YaYa Diaby, Louisville - YaYa can mean either nanny or grandmother depending on who you’re talking to. Either one should provide good leadership for the front seven.

The Lions interviewed a Guard out of Eastern Michigan at the Combine and then brought him in for a Top 30 Prospect Visit (although under current rules it was categorized as a local prospect and didn't count toward their Top 30.) Lot they like about this kid from Quebec, Canada. Not the least of which is his perfect-for-an-offensive-lineman name. Hope to hear it called on Saturday.

Sidy Sow, G, Eastern Michigan

Bears selected Texas RB Roschon Johnson with the No. 115 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Johnson (6’/219) doesn’t have an impressive résumé of production, but that’s understandable when you’re stuck behind Bijan Robinson for three years. Johnson's best season was his freshman campaign, the only year Robinson wasn’t also in the backfield. Johnson rushed for 649 yards and seven scores while adding another 158 yards and an extra touchdown through the air. Johnson didn’t do a lot at Texas, but he did a little bit of everything. He played special teams, lined up as a receiver, took wildcat snaps, and excelled as a pass-blocker. That will likely be the role he finds in the NFL: Jack of all trades, master of none. There are some touches for the taking in Chicago after David Montgomery's departure in free agency.

I have done 7 redrafts in the FFPC so far this year and there is one guy who has been in 6 of those drafts. He has drafted Herbert and Roschon in almost every draft, usually at cost of an 8th(Herbert) and a 10th(Johnson). I find myself wondering if he's glad or sad tonight?

Thinking out loud here ... Chi RB are not upper FF value due to Fields taking more running opportunities, but who will be GL?
Herbert is not tiny (5'9 at 215 lb) while Roschon is more beast at 6'2" 224 lb
IS the GL in Chi role worthy of roster space due to Fields ?

Looking at Phil in 2022, Hurts ran plenty, but Sanders still had rushing 11 TDs.

Bears GM Ryan Poles praised Roschon Johnson's pass protection in a post-draft press conference.

“But the cool thing about it is if you watch Texas tape, he does a lot. He pass protects really well. That stands out. He’s done some quarterback stuff. He came out of high school as a quarterback. So this is going to allow our offensive staff to maybe do some really cool things with him and keep a defense on their toes," Poles told reporters. It's possible that Johnson has a bead on a third-down role with the Bears early as neither D'Onta Foreman (23 career catches) nor Khalil Herbert (also 23 career catches but in fewer years) has a long history of third-down work. Johnson had 56 receptions over four years in Austin despite the presence of Bijan Robinson.

Don’t forget Foreman, he’s listed at 6’1 at 236 and probably plays at higher weight than that. Bears are going to sledgehammer teams to death next year whether it works or not. This is a total dart throw backfield from week to week but all 3 are the type of RBs I like to roster at their price.

I have that combo in 2/5 FPCs. I don't hate it but they're vying for RB3/4 on those two and so the impact isn't necessarily huge. I have entrenched starters ahead of them (today) but if I need a Flex I may have to choose between the two.

And of course the very non-zero chance that either Herbert or Roschon runs away with the job and/or that both are startable in a pinch as I know you have sometimes lobbied for doing with shared backfields.

Latavius Murray?
Please ... This guy is waaaaaay better than latavius Murray ... Could be the 2nd best RB in the draft
Definitely RB steal of the draft
Seems unlikely but maybe.
Still, Murray has had a decent career. Better than many backs will have.
Right, Latavius Murray has 7,753 career yards and 57 TDs, and was a pro bowl RB once upon a time. Hell, even in year 9, he was putting up 4.4 YPC on a bad team.

If Johnson has Murray's career, I'll be thrilled as a Bears fan.

I agree with travdogg here. I would be thrilled for this guy to turn into Latavius Murray. I don't know..............I spent some time watching videos and didn't see much that blew me away. He kind of reminds me of Ryan Grant (packers). I don't see him putting foreman or herbert on the bench.

He just went 1.04 in our 1QB league.....and another owner chimed in and hoped he would be there at 1.08....I guess he is gaining momentum.

Way too rich for my blood....

Well, that's kind of a silly point of view. Murray is going into his 11th season as a day 3 draft pick with almost 8,000 career yards. We should all be striving to "underperform" to that level. Murray is about 250 rushing yards away from being in the top-75 in NFL history.

Hell, even last season, Murray was in the top-20 in the NFL in both YPC, and PFF grade. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with a much bigger role this year in Buffalo than people are expecting too.

Holy crap! I have a hard time seeing a case for top-4 RB, let alone overall.

I'm looking at Johnson as an early 3rd round rookie pick.
Yea I had him well into the late 2nd in a 16 team league and I said to the owner "bold pick" and he replied he needed RB help and liked his college production....to each their own...

Journeyman who has stayed healthy ... never a lead back or bell cow ... 1 x 1000 yd season (barely) , terrible short yardage/goaline guy despite his size , great size and speed but terrible vision

I currently have him as my RB5 (and overall #5 because it's very difficult to get RB's in this league).

We clearly define “sucks” differently. If he sucked he’d be out of the league years ago.

I currently have him as my RB5 (and overall #5 because it's very difficult to get RB's in this league).
Overall #5 do WR's get -1 PPR ?
😄 They might as well. Basically, it's 12 team 20 man PPR QRRWWFKD 6 pts all TDs. Everyone takes RB early. WR fall like crazy. Many WR are available a full round, or more, later than you'd typically see them taken in most leagues.

I'm in a similar league and draft right now - no PPR, start 1 RB,1WR, 3 Flex, TE not required (they are lumped in with WR). League is 25 years in and very few changes from the initial set up.

I could use RB help, sitting at the 10th pick and debating Roschon, Spears, Evans, or Brown. I know all are reaches, and I do have the 14 and 15 picks (though may trade out), but there is a non-zero chance that at least 2 RBs go from 11-13, so I'm debating if one of these guys is worth taking at 10 so that I make the choice vs. taking whomever is left

I think Johnson is worth an early second rd pick. The Bears used a 4th on him over some other clearly bigger holes in the roster. He is going to get his chance.

Herbert excelled as a 1B back on a bad team and I think that's a good role for him. Foreman was brought in on a cheap one year deal to be the grinder and is on his 6th NFL team already. I don't have high expectations for him going forward.

Johnson only has to show he is better than just a guy to get meaningful touches in Chicago and has one of the easier paths to starting. Both talent and situation are there.

I doubt you'll own him anywhere then (which is totally fine based on your study of him and not being that high). But I've not seen a normal mock yet where he drops out of the 2nd round. He's going at the 1/2 turn in most of them. Maybe SF/TE super premium or start 2TE he sneaks into the 3rd?

I can see people pumping the breaks on him being the immediate RB1 there. But Foreman has played 43 out of 97 possible games the past 6 years. And Herbert has been pretty much a 30% snap share guy unless injuries put him into more usage. I think Roschon gets the opportunity for touches this season sooner than later. It will then be up to him to do something with them. Small sample size playing behind Bijan in college can certainly skew his metrics a bit, but it's hard to completely write off 5.5 YPC, 7 YPR, and almost 400 rushes with only 1 fumble and 139 forced missed tackles (45% rate). He also blows both Herbert and Foreman out of the water on passing downs. Neither of them have ever shown even a glimmer of hope in the receiving game, nor are either of them that good at pass blocking. Whereas RJ excels in both of those areas. Even taking rushing out of the picture, if the bears are committed to keeping Justin Fields alive and lowering the atrocious 55 sack number from last season; I think RJ is the answer there.

Quotes from a recent Ryan Poles interview: Jeff: “I’ve never seen a scout look me in the eyes repeatedly and say ‘this guy is different’ (about) Roschon Johnson, RB from Texas” Ryan Poles: Yeah, he’s different. When you watch the tape, when he had his opportunities, it flashed, and it was impressive. And then when you get to meet the person, from my chair when I listen to my scouts talk, the conviction that came out of them was incredible. I actually joked with them like “you don’t like him, do you?” And they actually got mad at me. They LOVE this kid. We love this kid, his make up. When you hear your scouts talk, and they say “its gonna be hard for this guy to fail because of his make up” those are the things you love
