RB Saquon Barkley, PHI (6 Viewers)

Bust of the year?
Non injury related, I think he’s the clear winner.

Even this week, many fantasy analysts seemed to be touting him as a buy low given a favorable schedule down the stretch. Not so much.
In my opinion, and I'm sure it might upset some people, but Barkley's biggest problem is Barkley. He's not playing well. Its not "oh the offense sucks, oh the OL sucks" its Barkley. He's the RB version of Lamar, only without the injury excuses. He's not breaking tackles, he just looks slower, and its not like he's helping as a receiver. The OL taking a step back hasn't helped, but its still a good OL, just not the best.

Factor in that he went #1 overall in many drafts, and no later than #3 in almost any, and he's the biggest non-injury bust to me.
bad OL and play calling but you are correct - Rarely gets a GL carry - he looks slow and indecisive and ive seen way too many drops of easy yards on swing passes - huge bust

So maybe Joe Schoen was right
A year later
It was always weird to me, how much blame he got for letting Barkley go. What would have happened if they kept Barkley? They win 5 games instead of 3?

I mean, I get the argument maybe they should have gotten more than a comp pick for him, but it didn't make sense for the Giants to give a big contract to a 27-year-old RB, when they weren't going anywhere with him.

I feel like it Barkley had ended up say, in Houston or something, instead of Philly (a division rival) less would have been said about the decision to let him walk.

Saquon has, at least had some weeks ago, terrible peripheral numbers like missed forced tackles and other terrible ones. It’s also partially his line. Tank Bigsby might b red better right now.
There are quite a few people in the Eagles thread that think Bigsby is running better than Barkley this year.

He’s certainly doing more north-south running and hitting the holes harder than Barkley is.

His mistake was not letting Barkley go. His mistake was building a crappy team for whom it makes no sense to keep a veteran RB at a high salary.

Probably true. But it’s also silly to think that defenses are behaving identically when Tank is in the backfield vs when Saquon is.

I’m just here to point to the shirt.

Was targeting McCaffrey in auction after seeing @travdogg rankings before the season, and had Barkley on my do not draft list after so many touches.

Mccaffrey bid got a little too rich for my blood early on in auction draft, so I let him go… and drafted Barkley for MORE than mccaffrey went for trying to bid him up to a leaguemate.

lol.

Oh how the turns table.

Price-enforcing someone on your DND list seems like a suboptimal auction strategy.

It is and was. You are not wrong. I sometimes panic under pressure on the button during auction drafts and get a little cocky and ahead of myself. Sometimes it pans out and sometimes it doesn’t. This was a big doesn’t.

I was just watching the fantasy pros podcast and Joe Pisapia just brought up something about Barkley I found interesting. Sorry if it's already been mentioned in this thread somewhere, as I'm being lazy this morning. He said some 19 year old kid on TikTok pointed out that everytime Barkley's in pass protection he moves his head side to side and every time it's a run he stares straight ahead. If a 19 year old kid can see this, then maybe opponents do to. It's like in baseball where pitchers are tipping their pitches.

What do you do with Saquon moving forward towards the fantasy playoffs? Every week he's still listed over guys on my roster like Jaylen Warren or Judkins who have been on my bench.. by every single fantasy projector there is.. and except in rare weeks he looks like crap.. Is everyone as clueless about where to rank a seemingly healthy reigning 2000 yard rusher/OPOY.. at this point maybe the prognosticators are just trying to avoid feeling silly if he actually has a monster game and they have him ranked 20th?

BTJ a bigger bust
Again relative to where they were drafted it’s easily Saquon. I’d venture most redraft teams that drafted Barkley are either already out of the playoffs or fighting tooth and nail to get in.
WR50!? Saquon has at least been a serviceable RB2. And most teams are either out of the playoffs or fighting to get in.

A league mate of mine started out with Barkley, Brown and Lamar then Kittle. He's 9 and 4. Carried by Pickens and the Seahawks DEF. FF is crazy sometimes.

There are no words that can express the utter dysfunction from this guy. I have seen every excuse and theory as to why or how he went from being so dominant to being so dismal. Its like he is going through the motions bored and uninterested. This guy was the spark, the difference maker, the catalyst and for some strange odd reason he is just falling over after 2 yards or running into the rear end of offensive lineman or away from holes or straight into DTs. TDs are just a blur. With a weird week 14 bye week and scant on the WW there are limited options to sit in fantasy. Bust of the year

IMO his still high ranking probably anchors a lot - perhaps too much - to the past rather than where we are now. Also though, while the volume isn't there, there are not too many RBs out there who don't share very many touches. So the workhorse angle - at least the potential for high touch totals - plays into it for sure.

We'll probably be debating this for years, as he's probably become the future poster child for a gigantic falling off the cliff after a magical year. Whether it's wear and tear from an enormous workload, the change in OC, the weakening of the offensive line, personal complacency from winning the SB and getting handsomely paid for it, or teams just gearing up for Saquon - all of these will be debated for a long time. At the end of the day, it's probably some combination of all of the above.

Last year I faded this guy and didn’t possess on him in any of my teams. And I’m an Eagles fan. Then of course I ignored the “rule of 420” or whatever the number of touches are that when a back hits it, it’s a massive regression the following year. Drafted him twice and he and his 5-8 points per game have single handedly killed those teams. Next yeah I wonder if CMC will do the same…🤷‍♂️ I have him in a one keeper league and boy I got some thinking to do…

he's averaging 11.3 ppg in standard scoring and 14.2 ppg in ppr scoring.

This and BTJ had the injury excuse as well.

BTJ sucked even before he got hurt. He was WR43 through 9 weeks before he started sitting.

Barkley at least has been a serviceable RB2. RB13 overall in PPR and RB16 in PPG. A terrible return on investment but still a different league than "completely unstartable all year" like BTJ.

Barkley redraft adp was 1.03 so about 10 picks ahead of BTJ, but given that 4 of the 6 guys that came right after Saquon underperformed too (JJ, Lamb, Nabers, Jeanty) it's not like you were missing out on that much more than you were missing out on by sacrificing the 1.12 for BTJ.

EDIT: Let's not forget JJ either. He was picked just as high as Saquon (1.05 ADP in redraft) and is WR18 on the season, WR25 in ppg.

The odd thing is he looks healthy and in that second game vs the Giants he looked fast and powerful. The fact that its just all nose dive and not a couple of bad games and then a solid effort. Trajectory since the bye week has been a hard downturn. Oh well - cannot wish it away so I chalk it up as a huge lesson learned for future drafts.

If he posts 3-4 stellar weeks in a row, those of us who’ve made the playoffs with him will be singing from the mountain tops.

I don’t think he will. But crazier things have happened late in a season.

He does face the Raiders soon.

Yeah I know I’m exaggerating. But he did get 5.6 last week pretty much ending my season…

Schedule favors him for sure. Chargers tough but not impossible than Raiders, Wash and Bills

So, he's Chase Brown basically... yeah?

More of a gap in their pre-season ADP IIRC though.

It's not like last season teams game-planned for Philly and said, "we need to stop the pass."

Jason Avant said, Barkly runs like he looks content. Barkley is the equivalent of Cole Hamels - 2009. Hope he recovers the following season like Hamels did.

i think the massive number of touches last year has certainly had an effect, but specifically this past week, it's tough to predict that the Eagles D would get thoroughly dominated by the Bears and the O will only have the ball for 20 mins.

Every time the Eagles have a nice play they have a penalty. It's killing them right now.

I gave up a first round to keep Barkley and a 4th round to keep DJ Moore lol. It’s been a while since I whiffed this bad and yet I find myself in 3rd place with a clinched playoff spot. Thank you JT!
