RB Ty Johnson, NYJ (1 Viewer)

I don't think he missed a single game in college and as a junior he was the definition of a bellcow. 3.5x more carries than the next RB and 2.5x more receptions than the next best back. I do agree he is a bit sleight for an NFL RB and it would be best to keep his usage in the 220-250 range. However, I think those need to include those 3rd down passing situations as they are really important and he's got chops as a receiver.
Missed four. Played through a lot of injuries.

Kerryon Johnson’s injury history troubling

So you guys think 2nd preseason game telegraphs regular season usage? It’s possible it was an opportunity look at guys they’re evaluating.

No idea. I just asked for theories. Thought it was good info to sift through that could effect Ty Johnson. Maybe I should have posted it in the Kerryon thread so the panic was in the right place lol

Ty came in early on the 3rd down usage and then played for quite a while after CJ went out (before Zenner).

Ty Johnson is a great stash assuming he makes the 53. His size/athleticism combo is very intriguing.

TJ was one of the players I targeted & acquired in my dynasty league's pre-training camp waiver run.

ESPN's Michael Rothstein writes, rookie RB Ty Johnson "should have a role with Detroit this fall as a change-of-pace back."

The Lions have been pleasantly surprised with Johnson's receiving and big-play ability, enough for Rothstein to believe he'll see "a few touches per game" in the regular season. For those drafting Kerryon Johnson in the late second round, this isn't exactly what you want to hear, but Ty Johnson is just a sixth-round pick after all. The rookie has no business being selected in redraft leagues with Kerryon and C.J. Anderson clearly ahead of him on the depth chart.

Being a sixth-round pick out of Maryland means he isn't going to get the attention others will early in the season. But he’s a player to watch, both in fantasy leagues and in real life, as a sleeper for a better year than you might anticipate.

That said, at the moment, Johnson is fine living the hype-free life.

“I’m off-the-radar right now, and I like keeping it that way,” he said. “I like staying low-key. That’s perfectly fine if I am. That’s perfectly fine.”

Why is he OK with that?

“It’s not as much pressure, one, and two, it’s the ultimate surprise, I guess, if I do make big plays," he said.

It'll be a great surprise if he does it a couple of times in the regular season -- and there’s reason to believe he should receive some opportunities because his combination of speed and acceleration is different than that of Kerryon Johnson, Anderson or Zach Zenner. Johnson can get outside in the blink of an eye or through a hole in a flash.

Kerryon Johnson has the ability to make big plays with his vision. Anderson, who was a darling filling in for Todd Gurley II in the Los Angeles Rams' run to the Super Bowl, is a bigger back. Zenner has special-teams value and has always been able to rush for the yards that are open to him. Johnson brings something different.

“He can go whenever," Anderson said. "His speed speaks for itself. We can all get in the open field and hit some runs, but to finish those open runs, I think that his ability is better than myself, for sure.”

It's what Johnson did at Maryland, finishing fourth in school history in rushing yards (2,635) and third in all-purpose yards (4,196). He didn’t catch many passes for the Terrapins, but already in Lions camp he has shown that he can do that too, something he was confident of when he was asked about his lack of receiving production on draft day.

The Lions were intrigued by his potential then and continue to be now. It isn't clear what his role will be this season. Change-of-pace back? Third-down specialist? Special teams? It's a spot the Lions are trying to find for him.

Johnson's speed opened that up. He has all the makings of a future playmaker. Lions coach Matt Patricia likes his ability to burst through the line of scrimmage, except that Johnson still seems like a player going “what do we do?” once he gets there.

If he figures that out, the Lions should create a way to use him. That will make Johnson tantalizing in all aspects of football, both real life and fantasy.

“Certainly his speed is something that is very interesting, and I would say there are definitely some trends in the league right now where you have guys who have different types of speed out there that gives defenses problems, and those are hard players to defend,” Patricia said. “Right now, for him, it’s really about learning the position and making sure that’s all consistent.

“And then, once all that kind of gets settled down, if it goes in the direction that we want it to, we can try to explore other areas to use his athleticism and things like that to help us.”

Re Anderson

Are we really sure he's going to stay ahead of Johnson on the depth chart?  The guy couldn't sniff the field for the panters to start the season and made noise at the end of the year on the rams explosive offense when all the defensive players were worn down from how many weeks of hitting and his legs were still fresh. Then come the playoffs when he was a bit more banged up he was no longer the world beater he looked like at the end of the season.

Give me the upside here.

Not to mention his salary is pretty low. it's not like hes paid enough to guarantee he sees the field. They also signed him before they had the opportunity to draft Johnson and then see exactly what they had in him

Caught a TD today from Staff on a 4th down. It was a smooth catch caught on the run with a defender closing in on him. Kerryon had already been pulled but the rest of the offense was the first team so that is a good sign. I don't think he has played at all since the 1st team has been pulled. He's definitely part of the plan for the offense this year.

TJ's combination of size/speed/power/receiving traits is impressive. It doesn't mean he'll eventually be a feature back, but he's got feature back-type skills, IMO.

Just for reference, I like him more than Darwin Thompson as far as a long-term asset (although, Thompson has a fairly big advantage right now due to situation).

As far as redraft goes he's not on fantasy pros list of 115 rbs. If he takes over the theo role, riddick finished as rb72 last year in my league.

I think he’s a nice back. He got very, very little volume in college and I would predict his NFL career to be the same which caps his upside. I’ve taken him late in best balls as a home run swing when I’ve messed around on waiting RB too long.

(durability rating of 1/5).
I own the fellow in a few places and you are throwing cold water on my parade! I understand he had his issues last year. But 1 out of 5?  Say it ain't so.  Or at least can you provide why *so* low?  I paid a pretty penny to get on this train, but I'd rather get off sooner than later if he really is likely to be out of commission several or more games per season.

Edited to add: forgive the intrusion into the Ty Johnson thread, though it is at least indirectly pertinent here.

The link can take you to the website that ranked him 1/5. I take their predictions with a grain of salt, but I appreciate their durability rankings and collection of injury history.

Hes on my avoid list for injury concerns as he seems to get beat up a lot. I'd take him at the right price, but I wouldnt want him as my rb1, and I'd want a good backup plan if he were my rb2.

ETA: to put it into perspective, I own Guice as my rb3, and I prefer him to KJ

Have him in 4/5 dynasties. He was the day three back I prioritized this year as a waiver flyer after the NFL draft. Good combine numbers, looks pretty good on the field, and had some interesting production in college with a lot of long runs and a high YPC. I don't think he's an obvious featured back, but I'm glad to hear that he's been generating some positive buzz and it's not like Kerryon is a completely known quantity just yet (though his rookie year was good). Worth hanging onto Ty for a while to see what you have. My expectations are realistic, but you always want to be kicking the tires on these freebies if you have the roster space and you think they might have a pulse.

Talk about bursting my bubble... I picked him up off WW $6 last night .... and go to add him to my Subscriber Contest roster only to find him not listed!

Ty Johnson handled seven touches for 36 yards in Detroit's Week 2 win over the Chargers.

Johnson was surprisingly used ahead of C.J. Anderson on the ground, out-touching the latter 7-5 on the day. It continues to be awful news for Kerryon Johnson, who did lead this backfield with 12 carries and three targets, but saw all of Anderson (5/8), J.D. McKissic (2/2), and the rookie get involved on early downs. Johnson looks to be Kerryon's handcuff at this time.

I missed this.

Was at the game today as well. But I drink a lot.

What was the injury?
Yes was today, went to the locker room immediately. He came back out to the sideline and it didn’t seem serious but I don’t think he returned to the game. Not sure what it was, there were a lot o people at my house watching and it was a bit loud.

My .02 from a Detroit fan is that this guy looks legit and with the way the NFL is leaning towards smaller backs with the ability to catch the ball, who knows... The abrupt release of CJA speaks volumes though and with KJs propensity for injury well...  :moneybag:

ETA: My college impressions of him were that he was a smaller speed guy. Not the case. Listed at 210-212 and 5' 10 with incredible speed make him feature back type.

TJ is a tough enough runner (& just big enough at 210) that he's a legit feature back prospect given his athletic profile.

He's a very intriguing stash right now with his price on the way up.

Any clue what TJ would go for in FAAB? I'm in a 12 team deep bench league so there isn't much out there. I woke up this morning thinking I could put a lowish bid in on him but with CJ's departure I don't know what to bid. I'm not sure how many teams in my league are on to him. It looks like he could have some stand alone value and if KJ went out could be a high valued asset. I was gonna put in a 37 dollar out of 1000 bid. I don't know now.

I won't take the time to see if this was posted in here but here's the wiki:

Johnson did not receive an invitation to the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine. However, at Maryland's football pro day, scouts from 29 NFL teams, plus scouts from two Arena Football League teams and one Canadian Football League team were present to observe the workouts of 15 Maryland players, including Johnson. Johnson impressed scouts by running a 40-yard dash time clocked by most scouts as anywhere between 4.3 and 4.4 seconds, with one scout reportedly timing Johnson as fast as 4.26 seconds.[6] For comparison, the fastest 40-yard dash time ran by any running back at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine was 4.40 seconds by Justice Hill of the Oklahoma State Cowboys.[7] At his pro day workout, Johnson was also able to do 27 repetitions of the bench press at 225 pounds, which would have ranked the highest amongst 2019 Combine running backs,[8] and was recorded jumping a 34-inch vertical.[6]

Johnson was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the sixth-round (186th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft.[9]

Short changed much? This guy has something to prove and the Lions may have dug up a nugget of gold in this here stream.

i wish I could help, but the vast majority of my experience has been with traditional waivers.

I'll say this much, in the few FAAB leagues I HAVE played in & really wanted somebody, I tended to bid extra to make sure I got them. That's better than missing out, IMO.

I put very little value on the bench press for RBs (by itself), but it does match up with what you see on tape.

TJ is a pretty tough runner & is obviously strong. When you combine that with top athleticism, it makes for an interesting prospect as long as they have decent instincts (which he seems to have).

I have 3 teams in the NFFC and all 3 will probably have vastly different bids. I do want him but I have no idea what the ball park should be. I just upped my bid to 77 out of 1000. Mclauren and Ross both went for about 300-380 last week and they are both starters. I'm sure I will up my bid a few times before go time.

This is a parody account right?

Aaron Jones 5’9 208

Ty Johnson 5’11 210

Darrell Henderson 5’8 208

May want to make up your mind.
What's your problem?

I said TJ is just big enough to be an effective feature back given how dynamic he is, but there's a lot of things that go into evaluating a RB.

TJ is a great stash right now & part of that is because he does have legitimate feature back potential.

That's why I use the block feature. filters out this rubbish until someone quotes it.

statistics have shown size doesnt matter

The takeaway from this data isn't that smaller runners are more effective in short-yardage situations, as I implied in the previous version of this study. It's even simpler: size doesn't matter.

While the data do suggest that lighter runners create first downs more often, and that a BMI in the 31-31.9 range has produced some great goal-line backs, those data simply aren't very compelling. More significant is what the data clearly does not show: any evidence — any evidence at all — that taller or heavier RBs are more effective at generating first downs and/or touchdowns.
