RB Ty'son Williams, BAL (1 Viewer)

Good point.  I suppose Jones was used as a comparison to Murray to justify Murray sucks ;)  (I'm not saying that however)
I don't think Murray's release from the Saints means he sucks, but it appears to have come down to economics, more than anything.  Murray does not appear to have much burst, but he is a savvy veteran who knows how to finish runs, he is reliable in pass protection and he takes care of the football.  I will be surprised if Murray does not command a decent-sized role with the Ravens.  Is Murray starter material?  No, not really, but this Ravens' backfield is not set in stone.  Ty'Son Williams should get the first crack at the lead job, but beating out Justice Hill to be the RB3 for Baltimore isn't exactly a ringing endorsement that Williams is ready to be a feature back.

This was more my point. Saints would have kept Murray if he took less money, but even before that Payton was saying that Jones was the #2. I don't think Jones is anything special either. So that has me leaning towards Ty'Son holding Murray off for 1A duties.

Sean Payton on 8/24

Let's just say Williams will get a shot, but his leash will be short and Murray will be there waiting.

Either way I think their best chance is to run these two out every week (Plus Lamar)... Let Bell and Freeman battle out for the 3rd rb roll.

Of the 3 vets they've signed, only Murray has any recent success, as moderate as that was.  Freeman hasn't been fantasy relevant since 2017.  Bell was admittedly stuck with Gase in 19, but he did wind up falling out of the rotation in KC last year, against a solid but underwhelming Darrell Williams.  His numbers haven't been fantasy relevant since 2017.  Murray at least put up solid numbers last year, but he is 31 and hasn't actually been a lead back since 2017 himself.

So, the theme here seems to be that none of these 3 have produced fantasy relevant numbers in a high volume role since 2017.  It seems really unlikely that any of them are going to have a late career resurgence now, considering how rare that is for a RB.  If I had to guess, Williams gets his shot to run with the lead job this week, and assuming he doesn't fall on his face, has the best path to holding it.  He's not a rookie, he was on the practice squad last year, so he's had time to get familiar with the system.

I drafted him in my 2 home leagues, both of which I have thin backfields, and one of them where Edwards was my RB2.  Right now, I am leaning towards starting him over Jav.Williams, Jam.Williams, and A.J.Dillon in one league, and over N.Hines and A.J.Dillon in the other.  None of the options I'm considering him over are world beaters, obviously.  I suspect the volume will be there this week, the matchup is nice, and the system certainly favors RB production.
I feel like you should start him in both leagues. Great assessment.

I think we have too many people that think they need to pick only one player here. They are both gonna eat. Worst case for Williams is that he has the Edwards role from last year. I think he'll keep the Dobbins roll, but to each their own. Even with the Edwards role, Williams is worth an add in every format.

We can all go round and round and speculate about roles but it's all going to depend on what happens on the field.  Most of us got Williams for pennies on the dollar when he was behind Gus and/or Hill.  Now those obstacles are cleared and he'll be competing with unsigned/cut vets whose best days are behind them.  I like his chances a lot more vs those guys than competing with Edwards.  I snagged him in all 3 of my leagues with my last picks in the event something like this occurred...should be fun to see what happens.

NFL running back is a young mans game.  Count me in the camp that Williams has every opportunity to earn the biggest part of the Ravens RB timeshare.

Yeah, I picked up Murray in a deep bench league where I'm desperate for RB depth.  For some reason thought he was younger than 31 (I guess b/c he came into the league relatively older at 24).

But I don't see how you can't be thrilled at the opportunity ahead if you have Williams on your roster.  Even with B-more distributing carries he's got the benefit of having the youngest legs and most familiarity with the offense/coaches, by far.

I could foresee a scenario where Murray becomes 1A in the running game.  And am selfishly rooting for that.

But again, hard not to like Williams' advantages in becoming/maintaining  the role of lead RB in what's been the best rushing offense in the NFL.

The shark move is to identify Baltimore's RB8 after the turfmonster takes care of all of these guys

lol - my league has $4 adds off the wire. So far Jones (me), Bell, Murray, & Freeman have been added. $16 in the kitty for what will likely be a RBBC mess. And yeah, I'd bet it all just amounts to more LJax rushing & they may even bring in another back or two.

This week has been a tough year for the Ravens backfield.

The New Orleans Saints cut Murray, 31, their backup running back, on Tuesday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Saints had asked Murray to take a pay cut and released him when he refused.

Emmanuel Acho, a former NFL player and current Fox Sports analyst, noted that the timing was harsh: If Murray, a vested veteran — a player with four years of experience — had been on the roster past 3 p.m. on Tuesday, his salary for 2021 would have become guaranteed.

ESPN's Mike Triplett reported that Murray had $3.15 million in salary and bonuses for this season.

As Acho and Schefter pointed out, Murray is coming off the most efficient season of his career, averaging 4.5 yards per carry for 656 rushing yards. In 2019, Murray filled in for the injured Alvin Kamara and produced 307 total yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns.

In other words, Murray likely was not interested in taking a pay cut given how he had produced when his number was called.

Several people in the sports world said it was the latest example of why athletes must sometimes take care of themselves before the team.

Latavius signed with Baltimore for the vet minimum ($660k), although incentives could get him to $2M....if so that would make no sense...why not take the pay cut in NO......I wonder how much of a cut from his $3M NO was asking him to take.....

Speaking Friday, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said that RB Latavius Murray is a "great fit" in Baltimore.

“His style fits what we do. You’ve seen our offense, I think you can picture him pretty easily in that offense," Harbaugh told reporters on Friday. The Ravens are suddenly thin at running back after injuries to J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards, and Justice Hill. They signed Devonta Freeman, Le'Veon Bell, and Trenton Cannon in addition to Murray, but Murray is the one who may step into a significant between-the-tackles role alongside Ty'Son Williams. He's worth a speculative add.

I`m guessing he sees what everyone else sees , a great opportunity to go from a soon to be 3rd RB on the saints to being ''the guy'' in an Offense that is tailor made for his skill set . If he plays his cards right he could cash in later.

Didn't he decline to take the paycut before Edwards went down though?

Before camp, they valued his contract at $Z

after camp they only valued it at $Y
Yes but that could be due to the emergence of Tony.  Maybe they thought the gap between him and Tony wasn't as big as it was at the start of camp, so that affected what they valued him at monetarily.  Doesn't get much better than this for Murray... you go from a 2nd/3rd QB on a maybe-decent team, to an easy path to the starter on a contender.  If anything, maybe that will motivate him to be better than he was in camp this year.

If you own Williams, the Ravens signing these vets is nothing but good news.

If they were to trade for someone decent, that might be worrisome.

It’s the Ravens, they do massive substitutions everywhere. This is a team that’s cool with having Mark Andrews be on the field 60% of the time.

Ty’son could play 400 snaps this year and still be relevant.

I'm looking at it like I hit the lottery with my last rookie pick.  I fully expect him to be the #1 RB on the NFL's #1 rushing attack.

Ching-ching! :moneybag: 🤑

As a Saints fan who watched Murray in the two pre-season games, he looked very slow and seemed to go down easily.  He looked cooked to me and I was not surprised when they cut him.  I thought they would before the roster cutdown day.

Take that for what it is worth, a fan's observation.

Since I drafted Williams in round 16 and grabbed Murray off waivers Wednesday I don 't care who becomes #1.  I just want there to BE a #1 and not be coy about it.

I'm starting Williams this week figuring the team already has him in the game plan and he merits at least one look as lead dog.

Yeah he looked really bad. I had heard that Payton called Tony Jones the #2 and I was very surprised until I tuned in and saw how bad Murray was.

Delightfully surprised to see the positivity on Ty'son still. I thought he was destined to be Murray's COP, but this forum still has some hope. Especially since the Saints homers are saying Murray looked a bit cooked.

Either way, Ty'son will do fine as 1a/1b. Worst case is this thing becomes a 3-4 man RBBC but I don't see that as likely.

I'd be happy for 50/50 > so 70/30 would make me ecstatic!

I think the worst thing the kid to do is let the pressure get to him with trying to make a good impression and try to do to much and put the ball on the ground early. I’ll be rooting for him.

Ravens OC Greg Roman on RB Ty'Son Williams, who went from No. 3 to atop the depth chart in two weeks: "We feel great about Ty'Son. He's done nothing but impress."

Somehow or another I also did the same. It's Williams time to shine and grab the bull by the horns. I can see Murray filling in giving us the same kind of production when called upon. The other guys will also see get involved if need be. Williams with upside and Murray has the handcuff. Bell and Freeman are insurance and will give you something when called upon.

I believe you are correct if Williams gets off to a good start, but I believe Murray is still the back to own this year.

Williams becomes the starting 1A Dobbins role  while Murray plays the 1B Edwards role or vice versa.  Either way he’ll play.

The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec said RB Ty'Son Williams will get the "bulk" of Baltimore's backfield work Monday night against the Raiders.

Williams is the last guy standing in Baltimore's backfield after a surreal rash of knee injuries to J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards, and and Justice Hill. Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman said last week that Williams has "done nothing but impress" since the start of training camp. He could see upwards of 20 touches on Monday night. Newly-signed Latavius Murray, meanwhile, could see a "handful" of touches against Vegas, Zrebiec said. Fantasy managers should start Williams with confidence. Murray should be rostered in all formats.
