We are all deep in the mode of rating the upcoming RB's, there has been a lot of valuable information that has come across the board recently. For rating a RB coming into the NFL, in order of importance how do you rate the factors that lead to success.

Speed

Size-BMI

Quickness- Footwork

Vision

Breaking Tackles

Receiving

Blocking

Other?

Everything you mention is important, it's hard to take just 1 and say this is it. I will say some things are harder to measure than others, which makes it even more difficult. I think breaking tackles is awesome.....I mean, if you have a guy who is breaking tackles, it would be hard to imagine that guy not being someone who gets a lot of positive yards. But as you mention, it's coming INTO the NFL. So, how do I rate a guy who breaks tackles in college going up against NFL defensive players. How do you measure vision? I mean, DOC can tell me Mike Hart has 20/20 vision and we all know that running backs who are great have great vision for finding the correct open hole to run into but it's hardly easy to measure. That's why I think people put so much emphasis on speed. It's the one of the only things you can put a definate ranking to, to where you can say this guy is better than this guy in this area. One thing you don't mention is work ethic. Assuming that all players are NFL caliber, meaning you're not talking about someone like myself who might have some great work ethic but doesn't have any talent. With all things being close to equal, give me that guy who's going to work overtime, offseason etc.... You look at the greatest players at their positions in the history of the game, it's the guy's with the greatest work ethics that have seperated themselves from the others. It's not just in football, it's all sports. Whether it be Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods or Jerry Rice, they of course all had talent but their work ethics work second to none.

If I had to pick two...burst and power(breaking tackles)

1) Vision, Breaking Tackles, Quickness-Footwork, Character2) Speed3) Blocking, RecievingBMI is garbageIn the NFL if you do not have Vision, Breaking takles, Quickness, and character you will not succeed. You will never be a top RB with out all 4 of these. Speed is overrated IMO. In the NFL everyone is fast. Speed alone does not equal long runs ---- see Reggie Bush. If a RB can run a 4.5 40yard dash he will be fine. Most importantly he needs a great combo of my #1. BMI is trash.

When I read scouting reports some the thing I look for is:

1) Vision

2) Leg drive

3) Elusiveness

4) Low pad level

5) Quickness/agility

If a prospect has Vision + 2 any of the other attributes more often than not he'll become a solid RB.

An ideal power RB would be Vision + Leg Drive + Low Pad Level and ideal speed back would be Vision + Elusiveness + Quickness/Agility. If an RB has all of these he's a stud.

I agree speed as in 40yd speed is over rated. Size and BMI seems to be a great way to decide among close canidates, it sure seems to increase the % of a RB producing.

:lmao: And I saw the study done. I don't think you can prove that BMI increases the % of a RB producing. So your statement is false.

Some good information about size in the post belowTowards an Objective Measure of Talent in RBs

1) Vision

2) Burst

Being able to properly see a whole or the play developing, and then having a superior burst through the hole is what really makes a great RB (outside of the o-line of course).

Can't believe no one mentioned balance, yet.

Single most important factor according to Marv Levy.
