Real ID (1 Viewer)

I had to take my son into the DMV here in NYC this week to get his learners permit.

We had an appointment for 12:30. 4 hours later, he had his learners permit. The place was absolutely bedlam.
Same here in Southern CA. Took my daughter similar time to get her permit a couple weeks ago, even with the appointment. She didn't want to fail since the next avail appt would have been in July. Was glad to see that she had to bring all the same paperwork for the Real ID and wasn't just getting an standard license.

Seems to be a lot of panic around the Real ID deadline. I thought it was mostly only needed if you planned to fly domestically and didn't have or want to get a passport?
Plus if you waited, its your own fault.

I got my real id a year ago, mostly since I was already getting a bunch of other documents updated or certified copies obtained.

I have been harping on my dad to get his real ID. He started the process but he had the brilliant idea years ago of getting his DL in his preferred name (using his truncated middle name as his first name and not using his first name at all). Wasn't a problem until he went it for his real ID (6 years ago). They told him that his SSN name and DL name didn't match so he had to fill out some form or do something extra. It was too difficult for him so he kept putting it off. And then since the deadline kept getting bumped he kept putting it off. He said he was too busy or it was too much work. It was filling out a single form and bringing it with him. Plus he is retired and doesn't have any obligations. He can do it anytime.

Apparently he got it about a month ago but kept it in the envelop and put it with the rest of his mail in his mail pile. He doesn't want to use it because his other DL is still valid and doesn't expire for another year. I told him the real ID replaces this one .............it doesn't matter that it still has a year left on it. UGH. Damn Old People.

My kid messed up her appt for her driving test. Woman said you’re not in the system. Next appt was 2 months away. Kid starts crying. I sweet talk the lady. She says let me see if they can take her. Tell my daughter, you better stop crying, cause that lady is gonna fit you into the schedule. Sure enough my kid was next.

I had similar luck when renewing/getting my real id. Made an appointment. Wasn’t in the system. The woman said give me a minute. In and out in 20 minutes.

Pretty sure that’s right. (Visitors to Federal Government buildings will also need them.) At least I hope that’s right because I haven’t done it yet since I don’t plan on flying soon. I will just wait out the craziness and get in later this Summer.

yeah... that aint happening here.

and my son had already passed his permit test (online)- literally just had to show some paperwork and his face. 4 freaking hours.

I've had to deal with the DMV mid-town here (this week was down by the Battery/Wall Street) and it's awful under normal circumstances, but easy to anticipate grinning and bearing out the typical hour +/- wait and freakshow in the waiting room.

FOUR HOURS... WITH AN APPOINTMENT.

Correct. It's on the TSA website.... However they removed PIV cards that used to be on there

Edit.
  • HSPD-12 PIV card is on the list

I want to be a fly on the wall at the airport next week. There's been plenty of notice but there are going to be still be a lot of people in for a rude awakening at airport checkpoints.
You think airport security would get red with you if you brought a cooler & lawn chair and set up shop outside of general admission to watch what will surely be chaos for days?

Yeah, I used to use my PIV but they stopped accepting that a couple years ago. That was a bummer.

Which is weird cause it's on the list 😂

It will be the same people that show up 15 mins before their flight and yell and scream about the lines to check in and get through security.

I was pretty shocked both times. Remember I’m in SoCal. These were the San Clemente and Laguna hills offices. A coworker just spent ALL day at the SC office without an appointment.

Wow, never heard of PIV cards. Ah well, I am good with my RID and Passport!

Now I just need a reason and place to go.

Those must be some nice offices!

I think we were in Fullerton. Huge location. Not sure it could get sweet talked!

I've used mine multiple times over the last couple years. Not sure why you were denied

Laguna hills was a dumpster fire. Pretty big office. Recently closed. That was the true miracle. The SC office is a gem. Tiny and usually not as busy.

They had opened a small one in Buena Park about 10 years ago. Was so nice and empty. Guess that's why its closed now. :lmao:

Read that you’ll still be able to fly without one, may just need an extra security check? Seems like a cop out although probably prevented a few riots

Why do I feel like the same people complaining about needing to have a RealId will also complain about an extra check to not have one?

Wife and son went to get these yesterday up here in Wisconsin. She didn't have the right paperwork when she got her Wisconsin license last year.

There were 4 people there. She was in and out in 18 minutes. Had time to grab me a Culver's chocolate shake and drop it off by my office.

Love me some small town stuff like this.

They might not like the intrusiveness and data collection by the TSA. It’s not inconsistent in the least. See: Tulsi Gabbard

(I am being neutral when I say this; it is just that her situation implicates these issues)
