Watched The Dark Knight again last night.

Really want to like this one more than Batman Begins, but I just can't. I am still of the opinion that they tried to do too much with this one and it suffered b/c of it. One of the main reasons is besause it started to cross over the line of over the top action movie sometimes. Batman's always had his cool toys to play with, but the Hong Kong scene really took away from the movie with him flying off of rooftops. (Also, when did he develop super strength? - he bent a gun/rifle in the beginning of the movie). The scene where he's on his batcycle and doesn't engage the Joker still annoys me, and don't think they needed as much two-face at the end.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a damn good action movie. I loved the 1st one and really don't have a complaint about that one (except they could've had a better Rachel). I'd rate this one just below the first one. On an action movie scale I'd have Begins as a 9.5-10 and the Dark Knight more at an 8.5-9.
Hah...Ironically, I watched this for teh 2nd time last night as well, and think Im going to agree with you that Begins is the superior film. Now, seeing Dark Knight at the IMAX was unreal, but watching it again and not having the anticipation I did when I saw it first kind of proved what I had thought that Begins is more rewatchable. I would almost say Begins is undoubtedly more rewatchable if not for Ledgers great performance.

DK still has plenty of substance to go along with the action, but not as much as Begins had, and I think thats part of the reason I think Ill end up thinking its the better of the 2 in the long. I didnt have a problem with the Hong Kong stuff, but the bending of the gun did leave me :football: momentarily. ough. I didnt see any need to rush Dent's character to the point of him being 2Face, followed by him only being 2Face for about the last 30 minutes or so. Not only do I think I wouldve been better to give Joker more lines/screentime, but now with Ledger gone Im assuming Joker wouldnt be in the next one (if there is a next one), and you just killed off a big villain who wasnt ever in 1/3 of the movie.

Ill still have to see this 1 again, and Begins, but after watching DK for the 2nd time, I have a feeling Begins will end up being my favorite of the 2
:tinfoilhat: 2face shouldn't have been in this one. It took away from Ledgers fantastic role playing the vilan by having 2face cut into his time.

Mongol - 8.5/10 - I liked this, and I usually don't like films with sub-titles. Kind of reminded me of a Brave Heart with a Mongolian flair. The most fascinating part was seeing how these people lived so long ago. Learning about how differnt Khans where constantly feuding, and stealing each others wives was pretty entertaining. Genghis Khan was one bad mo-fo. Only complaint is that it was a little slow at times.

Just watched Wall-E today.

To me this is the animated equivalent of 2001. Beautiful movie to watch and I'm glad I did, but it's hella boring. Don't think I'd ever have the desire to put it in again. Critics loved it (and I understand why), but I was wondering if others have watched it with their kids, what age, and if they were able to sit through it. Would imagine kids getting a little antsy during the first 45 mins or so especially.

Resurrecting the Champ

Solid movie where Josh Hartnett is a struggling Denver sports writer and discovers former title contender Battlin' Bob Satterfield is a homeless man there. Decides to write a story about Satterfield and his legacy. Samuel L Jackson was great, and I know there are some Hartnett haters here, but I thought he was fine in this role and believable. Alan Alda and a hard to recognize Peter Coyote also help him out a little bit.

Didnt even know this was released outside of seeing a preview for it on a rental somewhere, which surprises me considering the 2 name actors. Surprisingly good, though I think they over-do the drama at times.

Worth a rental. 3.0/5.0

Just got done watching Get Smart... I really didn't like it very much.

This weekend, I aso watched Step Brothers... thought it was very funny.

And I watched The Longshots... thought that was good too.

I would recommend The Longshots and Step Brothers... but not Get Smart.

I also have Hellboy II to watch... I'll let you know how that turns out.
Watched Step Brothers this weekend, too. If you like Will Ferrell, you will like this movie. Classic Ferrell--I laughed out loud at several parts.

I liked it a lot. And my five year old loves it - especially the first 45 minutes

Watched Death Race tonight.

Completely stupid, bloody, over-the-top action movie. Exactly what I needed while I completed the hell I call wrapping presents. :banned:

My o My, Wanted was really really bad. Like laughably bad.

But there is one scene worth watching it for though, I suppose :Anjolina'sbootyshot:

I'm a big Will Farrell fan, but I didn't really like this one. It had a few funny parts, but overall it wasn't up to the level of his other movies.

I don't understand this critique. Was it COMPLETELY unrealistic? Of course. But I'm not exactly sure what you expected. A documentary on the life of an assassin? That's on the History channel.I thought it had some really cool action scenes, was fun and Angelina looked incredible. WOW.

State Of Grace

Perfunctory 1992 crime drama with Gary Oldman, Sean Penn, John Turturro, and Ed Harris. Not great by any means, but it's always fun to watch Gary Oldman act.

Like Semi-Pro, Bewitched, Kicking&Screaming, and Blades of Glory??? The only Ferrell movie I think is undoubtedly better than this is Anchorman. Old School is betteprobably, but that isnt really Ferrell's movie. I thought SB was a little better than Talladega Nights and Night at the Roxbury.

Stranger than Fiction was excellent but not really comprarable

Maybe its just a personal favorite, but I like this movie a lot..Penn is also very good, as usualOutside of the typical 6-10 most famous mob movies, this is easily 1 of my favorites. I might not call it great, but its damn close

For sure..Im saying that outside of those mob flicks that everyone knows about and loves (I think Carlito fits that, though toward the bottom part), State of Grace is 1 of the best.Penn is certainly better in Carlito's Way, maybe his best performance of his career actually

Re: State of Grace, i was really excited when i saw the cast for this, but i ended up disappointed. not terrible, but not that great either.

State of Grace is one of my all-time favorite movies. Just a phenomenal cast. Sean Penn, Gary Oldman give two great performances, and you get Robin Wright, John C Reilly, Ed Harris, and John Turturro.

I saw Slumdog Millionaire at the theater tonight. Thought it was awesome. Definitely a must-see movie.

Also watched Traitor on DVD. Don Cheadle is easily one of the most compelling actors working today. Very good movie. Really had no idea which way things were going to go almost throughout the whole thing.

The Condemned

Cheap action flick with bad acting but I loved it...good dude flick.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Much more of a love story than I imagined, still very well done. Oscar buzz is deserved...one of the best films I've seen this year and I'm not a love story guy.

National Treasure 2

The first one was a cheesy box office mystery thriller, but thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable. This 1 had more of the cheddar factor, and that and a less interesting plot made me find it less entertaining. It was sufficient to hold my interest while also being on the computer, and I guess PG movies like this can only be so good, but it couldve been better. Nic Cage was about as bad as hes ever been on film. Ed Harris did his standard very good job though

I must say when I 1st saw Diane Kruger in Troy and NT1, something about her was off and I didnt find her that hot (in relative terms), in this 1 though, she was looking pretty nice

After reading a pretty long review yesterday, I kind of figured the love thing. I cant get past the Big Fish and Gump comparisons though and am seeing this tomorrow....any more info/advice you could give me so I dont go in with too high of expectations?? I hate doing that and then being disappointed with a movie

Frost/Nixon

Went and saw this on Christmas Eve.

Tremendous acting performances by Langella and Sheen. Langella owned this role. For any conservatives reading this who think this was a hatchet job--it wasn't. Nixon is portrayed as erudite, whip-smart, very funny, and, surprisingly, quite charming.

The only slight problem with the flick that it seemed to be underwritten. There were too many exposition scenes, too much telling, and not enough showing. Several times it was announced that "this is a big scene"; characters telling Nixon or Frost "how important" something was. These scenes slowed the movie down.

Odd, considering that the movie was based on a play.

I know Opie Cunningham isn't a favorite amongst the critics. They say he is too bland, too conventional, and has no edge at all. But I've always liked his movies. He tells a solid, straight-forward story.

On a sidenote, right before the film began I got caught in a seriously long line at the concession stand. The doors of the theater soon were closing, and I could hear the trailers, so when I finally got my stuff I bolted--and then promptly tripped on a lip of carpeting and dumped half of my large popcorn all over the floor. I did not alert anyone on staff, I was way too embarrassed and continued on to my seat. Two hours later, as I am exiting, I notice that the mess has not been attended to. Several people in front of me look down in disgust as their shoes crunch stale popcorn. There are head shakes, and laments about how careless people are these days.

Me:  :banned:

I did drop a five in the tip chair on my way out, so I hope that somewhat makes up for my clumsiness and subsequent silence.

state of grace director phil joanu graduated one year ahead of me in high school (as well as staffer dave baker)... he previously did rattle & hum (U2), but never really did another movie that came close to matching the promise of state of grace... its like he only had one great story in him (oh well, many don't even have that)...i stumbled on to this movie and it is a hidden gem... great cast & story...

You know, I rented that not long after it came out, and I didnt really like it. I think I remember having a couple friends over and not really paying too much attention to it, because I cant remember anything about it (or Penn's performance for that matter..and I think Cheadle was in it who I like a lot too). Was the movie actually good and worth checking out again outside of Penn? If I do remember anything about it, it was that it seemed boring/slow while being a subject that shouldnt have been.I thought he was great and overlooked in Sweet and Lowdown as well (although I think he did get an Oscar nom for it, but I never have heard anyone talk about it I dont think and assume many have never seen it, or even heard about it).

F thatYou paid $10 per ticket and likely $20+ at the concession stand

You shouldn't also have to tell them that there was spilled popcorn, someone should have noticed

I have only anecdotal evidence based on my experiences here in NYC, but it seems theaters have cut way down on staff

They used to have a lot more workers around cleaning, making sure people got to the right theater and didn't sneak into movies other than the one they paid for

Now, other than the ticket taker and the concession stand, I rarely see any workers around

I have a feeling movie theaters decided the cost of labor was much more expensive than the costs of people sneaking in to films

Ugh. I had been interested in seeing this, but I hated both Gump and Big Fish, so maybe I need to stay away.As long as we're on movies in the theatres...saw Milk last night. Sean Penn is phenomenal. Other than that, meh. A weird combination of what sometimes seemed like a Gus Van Sant movie and sometimes seemed like a Disney movie. See the documentary instead. 3/5

The Wrestler, on the other hand, was as good as advertised IMOJust a supremely well crafted film all the way around

Wow..hate is a strong word...Im not sure I know anyone who even thought 1 of them were bad, let alone hate Gump or Fish. Hard to believe Krista! As for Milk - it is a Van Sant movie, right?? I find his movies very hit or miss, pretty much either very good (Drugstore Cowboy, Good Will Hunting, To Die For) or very bad (Gerry, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, Last Days). Maybe this 1 is in the middle?

Yes, and I cant stand it!How the hell is this movie not showing at even *1* theater in the greater Pittsburgh area?!?! Its ridiculous. The film is getting praise from everyone and their developing fetus, as is Rourke's performance, and no theater in this damn city has it.Yet a few theaters have Yes Man on multiple screens...yippie-cai-ye!

Thats ridiculous...I never heard of any movie that sees widespread release having such staggered release dates.

Its gets here over 35 days after it premiered in NYC/LA :excited:

Sweet & Lowdown was good. I like Woody Allen, so I see almost all of his movies.Penn was also good in the wordy movie Hurlyburly. Way too much dialogue for most, but a great cast.

Watched The Lives of Others today on Encore (I think). I had heard about this movie by seeing a review someplace, but it was one of those movies that I had forgotten about by the time it was released on DVD. I just happened to notice it was on when I was looking for a different program, and I wasn't doing anything this afternoon, so I decided to give it a go.

This was a really good drama. It definitely gets my

Yeah, I liked Hurlyburly and the cast was indeed loadedSo...does that mean Assassination of Richard Nixon isnt worth a 2nd viewing since you didnt mention it??

Rented three movies today:

The Great Debaters - (with Denzel Washington) - I liked this movie. I really enjoyed the special feature interviewing the real life characters in the movie.

Traitor - (with Don Cheadle) - I liked this movie too....but something about the way it just wrapped up too cleanly sort of bothered me.

The Kingdom (with Jamie Fox) Holy Crap - this movie was awesome!! A number of the scenes were so intense it made me uncomfortable. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Sorry it took me so long to finally see it.

Liked this a lot too. Though I its not a 'war' movie exactly, its the best war movie Ive seen in awhile..The shootout scenes are fantastic, especially the last one. Loved the direction and cinematography too

More edge than Big Fish and less hyperbole than Big Fish...more sophisticated than both Gump and Fish.Closer to Gump than Fish IMHO, but a much more fluid and succinct story. If you don't like love stories, don't see it. If you like love stories every once in a while I'd say it's worth the price of admission. Like I said, one of the better films I've seen this year...great sets, great acting, good story telling.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Much more of a love story than I imagined, still very well done. Oscar buzz is deserved...one of the best films I've seen this year and I'm not a love story guy.
After reading a pretty long review yesterday, I kind of figured the love thing. I cant get past the Big Fish and Gump comparisons though and am seeing this tomorrow....any more info/advice you could give me so I dont go in with too high of expectations?? I hate doing that and then being disappointed with a movie

Hmmm...not really into love stories, so probably not, I guess. And since it was compared to movies I hate...yes, HATE. Really, KarmaPolice, Gump was long at the top of my "most hated movies" until the movie "Happiness" came out. Big Fish was not nearly as bad to me, but still I did not like it at all.Saw the Wrestler at the Chicago Int'l Film Festival in October and agree it was fantastic.
