Recently viewed movie thread - Rental Edition (9 Viewers)

Love, Actually was recommended in a Christmas thread and I really liked it. Check it out now before the season is over.

Burn Before Reading Very uneven but enjoyable movie. Takes a long while to develop. Big fan of The Coen Bros. and I'm not sure where I'd place it yet. Maybe with Ladykillers. Very quirky.

IMAX- The Day The Earth Stood Still- First time seeing an IMAX movie. Very big, very loud. Still doesn't make up for the lulls in the movie. Not bad, perfect for Keanu's wooden acting. Nothing special. Worth a rental.

Traitor - 7/10 - nothing special, but it has action, and an original story. Kind of a few twist. Entertaining, and worth a rental considering what is out there.

Watched The Lives of Others today on Encore (I think). I had heard about this movie by seeing a review someplace, but it was one of those movies that I had forgotten about by the time it was released on DVD. I just happened to notice it was on when I was looking for a different program, and I wasn't doing anything this afternoon, so I decided to give it a go.

This was a really good drama. It definitely gets my :bag:
Outstanding movie :lmao:

Just watched this tonight. Thought it was OK at best. To be fair, I think The Big Lebowski is the only "funny" Coen Bros. movie that I have liked. Just not my type of humor, I guess. I would've liked it a lot less if not for Malkovich (sp?) - Just fun watching that guy act in movies. Other than that I thought the movie was entirely forgettable.ETA: Burn Before Reading must've been the prequel to the movie I watched. Maybe I needed the back story to "get" the movie? :lmao:

Just caught most of Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade.

Not quite as amusing as Fistful of Quarters......but the dork meter is off the charts. The best has to be Walter with his guitar

Took the kids to see "Bedtime Stories" yesterday and got exactly what I expected. The kids were entertained for 2 hours, despite some things going over their heads, and I was entertained for two hours despite plot holes and lazy writing.

Overall I'd give it 3 out of 4 Sandlers. (Because Adam Sandler flicks cannot be measured against normal movies, they have to be measured against themselves. That is: can a cute story, a likeable lead actor, and a pretty leading lady, some decent slapstick, and a feel-good ending overcome lazy or cliche-ridden writing? Related to its cousin, the Stiller)

Hancock sucked _____
I'm sure I'm in the minority but I didn't think Hancock was that bad. I'm not saying I'd recommend it but I guess the low expectations made it somewhat enjoyable. and the always stunning Charlize Theron angle gave it a good twist.

watched "enduring love" last night with the wife. daniel craig, samantha morton and rhys ifans based on an ian mcewan novel. really very good. not great but solid tale of obsession.

House Of Saddam

Oustanding HBO miniseries about Saddam Hussein. Fantastic. I liked it a lot. Reminds me how refreshing it is to watch a movie where you don't know any of the actors. I recognized just one guy from an Middle Eastern film I saw awhile back. But that's it.

Highly recommended

Let The Right One In.

One of the best movies of the year, period. Not out on DVD until March 10 but there's a screener out on torrents.

Generation Kill

Wow. Just outstanding. This seven part HBO miniseries is awesome. I have two parts left to go. I've always said that Apocalypse Now and Blackhawk Down were the most realistic war films I'd ever seen. But Generation Kill makes most war films look like Starship Troopers. I think this miniseries is a must-see. I cannot recommend it enough. Brilliant.

I told you I'm not into love stories! :P
That's why I want to marry you, dummy.
See, I got the joke, and then I made a joke in return (albeit apparently not a good one). Sheesh!
:pickle:
Can you lovebirds take this offline or something? Tired of reading through your personal conversations already.....

Reading the book right now and love it. Gonna bump this up the list and watch it when I get through it.

:lmao: I don't know anything about the book. But if I were to guess, I would have guessed that the book was either written by a soldier or by a reporter that was in Iraq. It's that realistic.

Yeah - was written by a reporter that rode in the Humvee with the troops. Love the different personalities in the group - racist rednecks to pretty boy that does yoga and tai chi. Also just ####ed up how many mistakes and the incompetence of the higher-ups. It's a great read.

The Visitor. Watched it based on some of the recommendations in this thread and was very pleasantly surprised. Starts off a little slow, but the lead actor gives a great performance and I thought it was an excellent movie.

Ghost Town. I'm a big fan of Ricky Gervais, but I worried whether his style of comedy would be well suited to playing a lead in a feature film like this. I thought it worked well and was very funny though. Definitely look forward to seeing whatever he does next.

Burn After Reading. I'm a huge fan of the Coen brothers, but this movie felt like a miss to me. Some parts were funny but in general it was just kind of a weird story without much else.

Cool. Since the seven part miniseries is more than 8 hours long, I am guessing they covered a lot of the book's content.

Glad you liked The Visitor. The more I think about that movie, the more I loved it. I agree it takes a while to get going. That lead actor was just phenomenal.I keep vacillating as to whether to see Burn After Reading. Now I'm leaning more toward "no" again.

Yeah. It's pretty much the the release of the article in Rolling Stone. There were numerous military that were on set as advisers and 1 guy that was written about is also in the mini-series. He's the "pretty boy"

I liked Burn, but I seem to be in the minority. Did you see The Ladykillers? It's a comedy in that realm. Not great, but I had some laughs.
I liked Burn After Reading.Malkovich was excellent and Pitt's character needed to be punched. He pulled it off well.
This. Clooney was very funny, too.
