King Corn - 7/10 - Pretty interesting documentary that teaches you quite a bit about the ways corn impacts the world economy. A couple guys go to the Mid-West, and grow an acre of corn, and follow it to market. A few things I found interesting are that half of the corn goes to making high fructose corn syrup. Quite a bit goes to feeding cattle as well. Cattle were not meant to eat corn, and before it became the major feed they were primarily grass fed. The high starch diets plumps them up real fast, and they wouldn't even live past another month if they weren't slaughtered. They also have to give these cows antibiotics.

The Black Donnelly's: Not a movie but a one season series that is unbelievably good. I think there is 14 1 hour episodes. If you don't mind a little violence go and check this out. And by a little violence, I mean a lot. Apparently it got pulled from TV because it was just too brutal in some parts. This just moved up to #1 as my favorite TV drama. I'd give it 5 out of 5 but I think they rushed the ending because they were getting pulled off air. 4.5/5

There was a show back in '96 with Joe Pantoliano and Jason Gedric called "EZ Streets", absolutely fantastic show from what I can remember. I have been awaiting a DVD for years, but it has never came out from what I know.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115161/

That being said, I agree Black Donnelly's has been the best network crime drama since focusing on the criminals. There were some parts that seemed really strange because of the way they had to show them on primetime tv, but that was just a minor distraction. I too thought the ending was a little tacked on, but at least they had a ending and it didn't just lead to nothing.

I was so pissed when they cancelled Black Donnellys. It was getting better and better as the season went along. It should have been picked up by FX. I don't remember it getting pulled for violence though, I thought it was just poor ratings.

I liked the show but that lead actor was such a deformed, freaky hobbit looking dude that I couldn't get past it...he was just hard to look at...

It sure didn't give any closure to anything. We don't know if anyone died. Sure a couple people got shot but they weren't dead when the show ended. We don't know if they continued to leave or if they stayed. Who took over?

One of the all time best shows

:football: very true

Saw Appaloosa yesterday.

Was disappointed as it was mediocre.

Good points - Ed Harris and Viggo Mortenson are always good. Realistic sets, costumes, plot.

Bad points - too slow, Renee Zelwegger looked ugly and out of place.

Lance Henriksen looked so old, I didn't recognize him right away.

Ghost Town - Liked it. Laughed out loud a few times.

The Day The Earth Stood Still - Meh. It had potential, and seemed like it was getting good, then all of a sudden it was almost over. I never saw the original or read the book, so I had NO CLUE as to what it was gonna be about. Glad I didnt pay to see it.

Burn After Reading - Its no Fargo or Raising Arizona, but it was a good movie - original, and funny. Good performances all around, IMO. The ending seemed sudden and abrupt, but other than that, I give it a :banned:

up Next:

Pride & Glory. The Midnight Meat Train, and Role Models.

Choke

I had been anxiously awaiting this release since I first heard about it over a year ago. One of my all time favorite books. I have to say I was a little disappointed with the final product, it just didn't transfer well to film. They left out a lot of his roommate's rock collecting agenda and I thought that was always the strongest part of the novel. Also, for a movie with roughly 1/6 of its screentime being sex scenes, it just didn't capture the filth of the culture the way the book did. I'm glad they made it, and I'm not sure if they could have done a better job, but it only made me want to read the book again.

3/5

Also, the "twist" in the book is painfully obvious in the movie, so much that it would be a real reach to call it a twist anymore.
I liked this movie a lot. There is a disastrous 10 minute segment in the middle that should have been cut. It seemed like the movie was taking a permanent turn for the worse. Once that regrettable segment is finished, the movie picks up again. There are several laugh out loud scenes in the movie, and some very original comic writing. Solid comedy.

NIghts in Rodanthe - I never, ever thought that Diane Lane could ever not be sexy but what they did to this woman should be considered a crime. Look...I know I'll come off as a sexist pig but women...all women, hear me now...DO NOT CUT YOUR HAIR! It does not make you look hip and young...it doesn't make your hair look healthy and fresh...anyone who tells you different is lying to you. Your friends are happy that you've uglied yourself up so that they can look much better by comparison...and any guy telling you that it looks hot is obviously into boys and should be a registered sex offender. Call the authorities and have him checked out. So...in conclusion...grow your hair...I don't care if it's tangled and messy...I don't care if it's full of split ends...at least you're a woman. And while you're at it...grow your bush out too. I don't really dig on diddling little girls...it's just not my thing. When you drop your pants...I want to see something that looks like Jimmy Walker's afro poking out of the top and sides of your panties. Just consider me to be Christopher McCandless from "Into the Wild"...just getting back to nature! I don't care if I die in an untamed jungle...infact, I prefer it!

Oh...and the movie blows...even ignoring Diane's hair...it's just a slow and ridiculous movie...nothing good was seen here.

At the risk of sidetracking this thread - which is a good one....I see a giant muff and it's dirty to me. I'm not quite sure why, but I see lots of hair and I see a woman who doesn't give a crap about her femininity....Keep that thing trimmed/clean!

I get what you're saying...and I have no problem with trimming...it's the waxing/shaving until there's nothing but a prepubescent bald clam that furrows my brow.

JCVD - I am BLOWN AWAY by how much I actually enjoyed this thing. Definitely worth a watch for anyone who has ever enjoyed even a moment of his films...this won't be the typical JCVD movie...but it will give you a newfound respect for his acting and the director's vision. Even if you're not a fan, I still think it's worth a watch.

Catching up on stuff I saw a while ago:

Fitzcarraldo: I had seen this years ago but didn't remember much. Wow, did I love this movie. Three hours seemed to breeze by, and I wanted it to continue at the end. The scenes with that ship on the river, with Klaus Kinski standing on top of it playing Enrico Caruso, and at the same time the natives were approaching playing their own music...so many breathtaking parts of the movie. Definitely one of my all-time favorites now. 5/5

His Girl Friday: Decent enough old Cary Grant flick. 3/5

A few in theatres that I went to see before the Oscars, from best to worst:

Doubt: Extraordinary performances (especially Viola Davis)--some of the best acting I've seen in years--and a compelling enough story. Not realizing it had been a play, I kept thinking throughout, "This should have been a play instead." There was just something about it that was small and made for the stage. 4/5

Revolutionary Road: Again some great acting. The story left me wanting...it had one point to make and made it early and often. Just enough to keep me interested in the movie, but nothing more than that. 3/5

The Reader: Jesus this was laughably awful. 1/5

NOTE: The last two movies both feature Kate Winslet's feet. I have no idea how such a beautiful woman can have such heinous feet.

So I'm rotting at the end of a tough day a couple of nights ago, Daily Show and Colbert are reruns, I come across 1954's Prince Valiant. I'm intrigued because the people my wife takes my dog to for grooming tend to give him what I have been calling a "Prince Valiant" cut with how they trim his ears. So I wanted to see how close I was to being right. Turns out it's pretty accurate. It also turns out that this movie is dog as well.

The good news - Janet Leigh at her peak, and especially Debra Paget who was 100% absolutely smoking hot in her prime - high quality eye candy, but not enough of it. A couple of the sets were o.k (good castle that gets stormed and demolished at the end in particular).

Past that I don't know what was worse, the writing (even given it was an adaptation of a comic strip), the acting or the music. Props are pretty bad as well - the cardboard armor was particularly cringeworthy. Apart from James Mason (who really looked like he didn't want to be there) wooden would be a compliment for the cast. Unintentionally comedic would be more accurate. Robert Wagner, apart from acting horribly, just plain looks weird. I don't even know who the rest of the actors were - but the guy who played Gawain (Sterling Hayden, maybe the name Hayden should preclude people from acting) was exceptionally awful.

It was a good reminder that recent historical drama dreck like Troy and Alexander The Great aren't new phenomena. I'd stay far away unless you need a "trainwreck I can't turn away" from experience - which was perfect for the state I was in that night.

Space Camp - Loved this movie as a kid and watched it again with my kid last weekend. Still holds up even with all of its 80s camp. The cast is pretty packed with Kate Capshaw, Lea Thompson, Kelly Preston, Joaquin "Leaf" Phoenix, Larry B. Scott (from Revenge of the Nerds fame) and Tate Donavan getting the "Introducing" and Tom Skerritt getting the "And Tom Skerritt as Zach" Even Terry O'Quinn shows up with a mustache.

Glengarry Glen Ross - I can add nothing here that hasn't already been said. Love, love this movie.

His partnerships with Klaus Kinski generated some of the greatest films and images in movie history

And as a bonus, not sure if you know this or not, but Glen Hansard (from Once) fronts an Irish rock band called The Frames, and they have a song entitled Fitzcarraldo:

I have a live Frames record called "Set List" that has an awesome version of the song (I also have the regular album version, so I can use that for the 00s draft :lmao: ). Though now that I think about it the original record came out in the 90s. I'm a big fan of everything I've seen from Herzog, other than the recent doc Encounters at the End of the World, which I liked but didn't love.

Divorce, Italian Style

Seduced and Abandoned

Two '60s Italian commedies by the same director, satirizing the Sicilian code of honor regarding man/woman relationships (marriage, divorce, adultery, premarital sex). Divorce won an Oscar, I believe. Both movies are excellent, although Seduced and Abandoned is a fairly dark commedy.

Edit: Be ready to read subtitles as the movies are not dubbed from Italian.

I can't recommend highly enough Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 93% and currently available from Netflix.

This is a powerful documentary about a likable guy who gets mixed up with a woman who's a few cards short of a full deck. I'm sure many of us can relate.

Please check this out.

Had this at the #1 available movie in my queue, but it's listed as "short wait". Anyway, looking forward to seeing it soon.

I really wish I could find out when this trend started and why it's a mainstay. I can't remember the last time I've been with a chick who hasn't shaved it all off.

Catching up on a movie I should've seen when it came out, Monster's Ball is outstanding. I'm always a big sucker for lonely people in love flicks.

And that Halle Berry is a crazy ####-monkey.
I've always wondered about that sex scene...you can see Thornton's sack at one point when she's riding him...there had to be some serious grinding between organs during that scene.
I seem to recall there were some rumors floating around at the time of the film's release that Halle and Billy Bob went full throttle in their sex scene.

He's definitely been working for awhile (I remember him from Goonies), but I just think he wasn't getting leading man roles and was mainly working as a character actor so nobody gave him a chance to really play a major role in a serious film until recently. He also seemed to always play a bad guy in his movie roles. Now that he's getting a chance to carry a film, he's really showing what he's capable of and will probably have his choice of films going forward.
Life got a whole lot better when he started nailing Diane Lane.

i may have been the last guy on my block to see pineapple express...

the cameo on the academy awards presentation piqued my interest (when they were screening dramas like the reader & the meryl streep nun movie & in hysterics - stop it!)...

first of all, i've seen some movies by judd apatow (?) & seth rogan (knocked up) & thought they were OK but nothing special... PA on the other hand, was one of the funniest movies i've seen in a while... i caught myself laughing out loud quite a few times...

rogan & james franco were excellent, in what might be a new genre (stoner action comedy), but i thought the guy that plays red (he operated the pyrotechnics board that accidentally triggered the ill-timed explosion near the beginning of the recent ben stiller/robert downey, jr jungle war comedy), a middle man drug dealer that gets caught up in witnessed murder cover up, stole the show...

some random highlights (i'll try to not reveal any serious spoilers)...

when they are arming themselves from a secret stash of weapons, red says... they messed with the wrong melon farmers today (i assume this is a reference to a bronson movie i saw, possibly mr. majestyk, written by elmore leonard, the same author that tarantino adapted into jackie brown?)...

seth's character is talking about reincarnation & trying to motivate red... he says that if he has been a bad person he could be reborn as a coackroach... but if he does something good, he could come back as an eagle, or a dragon, or jude law... :kicksrock:

franco finds himself needing to kick the window out of a car for visibility while he is driving, and does... but than his foot gets stuck!

highly recommended, unless you hate the stoner action comedy genre, than you probably won't like it...

Hellboy II: Meh it was ok. Not as good as the 1st one but watchable. Well to be honest closer to bad than good. 2/5

Pan's Labyrinth: Very very good. Starts off slow but picks up. 4/5

Glengarry Glen Rose: Freakin awesome. The banter is awesome. Ed Harris and Pacino do some fine work in this movie. 4.5/5

Zach and Miri Make a Porno: Meh, again decent. Not as bad as hellboy but still just ok. Kinda funny. 2.5/5

Irreversible: French film, done ala Memento. Pretty crazy movie. Worth watching but not with the wife. 3.5/5

The Wind That Shakes the Barley: Don't remember if anyone else has reviewed this one on here. I thought it was a fascinating portrayal of 1920s Ireland as civil war began. I didn't know a lot of the history of this time in Ireland, and seeing how it evolved that Irish were fighting Irish was very interesting. The performances were also terrific, and the film was beautifully shot. A must-see for anyone interested in Ireland or Irish history, and a very good movie for anyone else. 4/5
this finally reached the top of our queue. i really wanted to like this more because it has a lot going for it. it is beautifully shot. the script is pretty good. the acting is really very good. the problem is that it doesn't put the story in much of any of context. it focuses on a just a few characters and fails to go much beyond them. my wife resorted to asking me questions about irish history. it's a very good movie but could have been better. loach doesn't make epic films but this really needed that kind of treatment.

Blue Brothers: Saw it for the 1st time last night. Solid movie, but dated as sin. I wish I'd seen this movie 10-15 years ago, I think I'd have enjoyed it more. Best seen in the entire movie is the bar and "raw hide" that part made me lol. 3.5/5

The Transporter 3: The first 2 were watchable, mindless action flicks. This one was down right painful to watch. Jason Statham is the best action star there is right now be even he couldn't carry this movie. The chick in it was beyond annoying. 1/5

Seven Pounds: Will Smith movie about an IRS guy going around helping people. Great movie. A little slow near the start but once the entire plot is uncovered it doesn't seem like it was slow... if that makes any sense. Smith was great. I know most people here probably hate the guy, but he can act. 4/5

Outlander: A craptastic sci-fi movie about a guy's spaceship crashing in Norway at the times of the Vikings. He accidentally brings a dragon along with him that starts killing everyone. A lot of the sets and costumes were surprisingly good but they were quickly offset by the horrible CGI of the dragon. 1/5

I completely agree. Smith is becoming a good actor. I don't buy all that one trick pony talk. Some have complained that the movie was too obvious to figure out, but I think you are supposed to figure it out early in order to put yourself in the same position as the viewpoint character. Then you watch his choices and understand them.

I thought they did a good job of hiding what was really happening until near the end. I will say that I was extremely hungover so my brain may not have been functioning properly and I could have missed something important.

Body Of Lies - 7/10

I like Ridley Scott movies, but this one left me wanting. Maybe I was expecting an action movie and all I got was a thriller. The ending fell flat for me.

But still a sufficient watch and it does explore some interesting topics.

If he was not all in than that is one hell of an acting job
