Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Not great, but definitely made me laugh. My least favorite part is the gross-out humor. But I think there is a plenty to like here. Traci Lords and Katie Morgan are fine. Rogan is always good. And Elizabeth Banks plays a very likeable character.

Overall, I think this is better than Superbad. And Jason Mewes gets off some good lines, as well.

I thought Waitress was surprisingly good.
You know, if I had stuck with the movie and not abandoned it so soon, I am guessing there'd be stuff I liked. But I don't have as much time as I used to for movie viewing. So if a movie starts out poorly, I am less willing to cut it some slack than I used to be.

2 Days in Paris: Most annoying lead characters ever. Way too precious. Should have known to avoid something called a "quirky comedy". 0/5
I just recorded this on my DVR this week and I could not agree more. Awful. I watched 10 minutes and wanted to murder both characters.Another one I couldn't finish:

Waitress

I remember this movie received mixed reviews when it was released. And the tragic death of the writer/director made me want to watch the movie. Blech. I watched five minutes of this #### and that was enough.

Watching Waitress and 2 Days in Paris brings up an interesting point. It's been said many times that there are good movies that do not know how to end well. And that's true. But here we have two movies that don't even know how to begin.

It's hard to quantify why they suck so hard. But I think some directors are so enamored with their own project, that they assume we are going to feel the same INSTANTLY! Isn't Julie Delpy cute! Isn't Cheryl Hines' southern accent kitchy and home-spun? NO!!!!
There are not enough  for this post. I absolutely hated Waitress and didn't make it through more than 1/2 hour of it. Same idea, too--I wanted to like it because of the backstory and also because I liked Shelley in some Hal Hartley films, but that cutesy, totally fake story with the cutesy, totally fake accents did me in. And I also loved Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise and Before Sunset and wanted to like 2 Days in Paris for that reason, too. Ugh. Absolutely terrible, wholly manipulative movies.
These movies could have both used the same advertising slogan:AREN'T WE CUTE?

Zack and Miri - definitely enjoyed it...way better than some of Smith's previous attempts (Clerks II can felate me)...I wouldn't rank it above Superbad as someone else mentioned but it's right there. More than worth the rental.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona - I absolutely hate, full-on despise Woody Allen films with a passion...but I enjoyed this one...mostly because I'm a big fan of Bardem and Penelope Cruz...plus, the guy is just living the dream in this film. Definitely worth the rental.

last bunch of movies I watched:

Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist - Decent movie but nothing special. Not particularly memorable and not that many funny moments in it.

Zach and Miri Make a Porno - I liked this a lot and thought it was hilarious. Probably Kevin Smith's best directed film to date. Not as funny as Superbad though.

The Lather Effect - interesting movie about a bunch of old high school friends getting together later on in life. Sort of like Beautiful Girls although not as memorable. Thought it was ok and the cast was kind of interesting.

The Brave One - Didn't find this movie all that interesting or even believable. Not sure the same person would wind up in all these situations just days apart or whatever it was.

Chungking Express - For a blu-ray disc, the cinematography did not look as great as I expected it to. But, I thought this was a very good movie and I'm interested in seeing some more of the director Wong Kar-Wai's work now.

I'm Not There - Just a really bizarre movie. It was very tough to know what was going on if you don't have some background knowledge of Dylan's life, which I guess I didn't have enough of. Interesting movie, but I felt lost through most of it. Reading up on it afterwards helped me make some sense of it, but it's still pretty far out there.

I agree on I'm Not There. I was really disappointed in it but not because it was a bad movie--I just couldn't get it.For Wong Kar-Wai, try In the Mood for Love and its sequel, 2046. I enjoyed the first one a bit more, but both are worth seeing.

saw "slumdog millionaire" with the wife last night. a crowd-pleasing film that has no business winning any awards. danny boyle likes his films kinetic. i could see the same visual language he explored with "sunshine" and "28 days later". the female lead is stunning.
Bless you, my child.
the wife *really* wanted to see it. i'm sort of resigned to the fact that boyle isn't going to make another movie like "shallow grave" ever again.

After years of hearing praise about Office Space here, I finally got around to watching it.

It was worth the hype. I laughed my head off in several scenes.

I don't like Rap music but it sure fit in great in many scenes - especially when they killed the printer!

:lmao: :bag:

Classic..I REALLY wish i would have seen this in the theater but I remember the stupid promos and thought what a stupid movie..

To me, great comedies are still funny with multiple viewings. While I don't laugh just as hard when I watch that now, the movie is funny every time I see it.

Recently saw "In the Valley of Elah".

Very good movie. Loved the ending.

I'm not usually a fan of Paul Haggis - I think he tends to overdo things - but this movie is definitely

I like the movie mainly for the overriding metaphor. Jones is searching for his son, only to discover that the good, sweet boy he raised is deeply tainted by a modern, violent world. Almost a companion piece to No Country For Old Men in that regard. The movie's premise is heartbreaking. Not a perfect movie, but Jones was very good - as usual.

Saw this one last weekend. I'm also not a big Woody Allen fan, but this was definitely worth the rental. Cruz does a great crazy.I don't know if it's been discussed already but if you can handle being depressed and seeing yet another holocaust movie, I highly recommend The Counterfeiters - it's an Autstrian/German film and won best foreign film last year at the Academy Awards.

Thank you for this. The whole time I was watching that pile of crap I kept thinking to myself "How did this get nominated for anything other than a Razzy?" Good to know this isn't the critically acclaimed Crash.

Made in 1996, that sounds about right.
oh, that one is pretty weak by anyone outside of Los Angeles' standards. good chance you'll think it blows.
I'm from Los Angeles and I absolutely revile the "critically acclaimed" Crash. Awful film, just awful.

It's already in my queue, but I am glad to hear a positive recommendation. I recommend Downfall, as well. My feeling is that while the Holocaust has been already thoroughly documented on film, movies like Downfall remain must-see for film fans.

Crash is garbage. Cronenberg's movie is 10 times better.

I reviewed this only about a page ago. :kicksrock: I'm glad to see another couple of people who liked In the Valley of Elah as much as I did. I really fell for that movie.

The Counterfeiters: Last year's foreign language Academy Award winner. Fairly interesting Holocaust movie told from an interesting perspective, and it is very well-acted. Still, there are so many better movies about the holocaust that it is hard to see this one as much more than a trifle, and in many scenes I wasn't sure the filmmakers had enough focus on what they wanted to the movie to be. I bump it up to 4/5 on the basis of some very powerful scenes near the end of the movie.
Sorry I missed this post the first time. Anyway, I think it offers a very different perspective than most Holocaust movies. The protagonists are more than just hapless victims - they're conflicted individuals faced with tough choices, and really few if any of them evoke overly sympathetic responses. Similarly for the main antagonist. Holocaust movies tend to present things in a very black and white way - this one deals mainly in shades of gray.

Yeah, as I mentioned, I thought the perspective was really interesting, and that's what made it a good movie for me (along with excellent acting). Probably would have given it a 4.5 if I hadn't just watched The Shop on Main Street a week or two prior, which I believe to be a perfect movie.

I've lived in Southern Cali for 20 years now and I cannot stand the over the top, white guilt tripping nonsense that is "Crash".The other "Crash" with the car-accident fetishists was actually interesting and watchable if nothing more than to see that type of subculture onscreen.

I recommended it earlier...it's a very solid film from top to bottom...very well done and quite accurate.

I thought the end, the last 30 minutes or so in total was exceptionally well done - great payoff.mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

And this is a real spoiler, but to me the most poignant thing was the guy who kills himself after they're free, fulfilling his promise to hang on until they escape while honoring his wish to be with his family. That really got me.

Been a while since I have been in here....dedicated to using my Netflix account better than I did last year.

Wanted - I have the ability to turn off reality and just enjoy a good :lmao: movie with the best of them, but this one was really difficult to watch at times. The last time Jolie fires her gun made my wife, who had been giving me the evil eye during the whole movie for watching it, get up and just say "Please, give me a ####### break." - 2/5

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist - I wanted to love this movie and instead just liked it a bit. Cera was great and Kat was adorable. At 88 mins, the movie felt like it was missing an act somewhere. - 2.5/5

Zack and Miri Make a Porno - I am an admitted Kevin Smith fanboy, and loved this. Was better than Clerks 2 by a mile. His writing is so much better when he gets real actors to deliver them. Better than Superbad IMO as well.

This wasn't supposed to be realistic. HTH

Good movie, and I want to have Elizabeth Banks' baby.

i am trying to remember the name of a recent foreign film. it might have been mentioned in here but i can't say for sure. i figured it might be worth a shot to ask in here.

german film, i think. young 20-somethings invade the home of a well-to-do older gentlemen. they play this game where they ruin his life. they talk about it all in kind of political terms. older man convinces them to let him go and he promises not to tell the police. he leaves and call the cops. there is some twist at the end, which i cannot remember.

does this sound at all familiar?

cannot remember the name of this.... >grrrrr<

Wasnt sure what to expect exactly with this, and heard mixed reviews as well. In the end, I enjoyed it a lot. Its not quite a psychological western or a shoot 'em up, but its engaging and effective throughout. Sometimes you dont know when someone is going to raise their firearm or not, but thats part of the suspense and intrigue. I think Viggo Mortensen is 1 of the best actors going (watch Eastern Promises if you think otherwise), and he's good as usual in this, but Ed Harris (as a verbally challenged town marshall who seems sure of himself but needs reassurance) and Jeremy Irons (as a wealthy member of the community who may or may not have killed the previous marshall) are even better. I found the characters interesting and the actors engaging the whole way through, but if the viewer cant, they probably wont enjoy the movie due to limited action. Great scenery (loved 1 towards the end where theyre at some sort of pueblo-ish hotel), sharp cinematography, and I liked the music backing it. If I remember correctly it was written and directed by Ed Harris too.

3.8/5
I'm a big fan of westerns and I really liked this. Its very good. It easily compares with 3:10 to Yuma. The only bad part is Renee Zelwegger. I basically agree with everything you've said above. The acting was great - save for the aforementioned Ms. Zelwegger.
