Sig-worthy.Been in my queue for a bit, but just got the bump to the top. I'll get it after I watch and return Phantoms.I agree about Murder on a Sunday Morning. One of my favorites.I need to see that.If you like crime documentaries (or just docs in general) I cannot say enough good things about Murder on a Sunday Morning. A riveting tale of a young boy accused of murder. Brilliant film.Paradise Lost: The Murders at Robin Hood Hills. Rewatching this 2 part documentary about the West Memphis 3. Still don't know how I feel about the case. Going to read the book Devil's Knot when it gets in from the library to see if there is more insight to it. Supposedly there is new DNA evidence suggesting that they couldn't have done it. Just revisting the case b/c I thought I read there was a part 3 coming out this year.
Also, The Staircase is outstanding.![]()

For all the hype it got, I prefer PE to Tropic Thunder. Franco is great in the movie, and I was hooked from the opening scene. Maybe there's a correlation if you do or have smoked the reefer.I liked it a lot. I was surprised to read bad reviews of this one.Pineapple Express. This movie gets funnier to me on repeat viewings. This is the 3rd time watching it now. I think it helps knowing how it turns into an over-the-top action movie towards the end. My favorite comedy I saw this year.
I smoked a lot of reefer in my life, but I really don't like drug movies as a rule. They're never as fun as real drugs. For all the hype it got, I prefer PE to Tropic Thunder. I liked it a lot. Though I confess that I don't remember a lot of it.Rififi: French heist movie from the 1950s. This movie is like Citizen Kane for me--I didn't exactly enjoy it so much as I was astounded at the filmmaking. One of the best directed movies I've ever seen, and the 30-minute heist scene in which not a single word is spoken really is incredible. Other than being amazed by the filmmaking, I didn't really enjoy it all that much, especially compared to others of the genre such as Bob Le Flambeur. 4/5 just for the direction.
it's ok. it's a so-so caper film that is slightly different because it's french. it pains me to say this but simply because it's french doesn't make it better. i think dassin's best work is the original "night & the city" with richard widmark.jdoggydogg said:I liked it a lot. egoyan is superb. i'll take "exotica" over most any other film. he's usually a surprising director.krista4 said:Speaking Parts: Going to watch or rewatch a bunch of Atom Egoyan's early work, starting with this one. I love this movie. Sure, it doesn't have the polish or the gravity of his later works, and it definitely looks dated (80s hairstyles and such), but it's an amazing meditation on loneliness and communication (especially via video). And weird enough to be sort of like David Lynch Lite. 4.5/5
I couldn't have been more bored at the theater. Thought it was the least funny comedy I've seen in a loooong time. At least one by quality folks that I expected better from. I'm a sucker for stoner movies and was enjoying, er legitimately using, my California Medical Marijuana for the entire movie. Maybe it'll be funnier when it hits cable but I really missed my ten bucks after the show.Tropic Thunder was adequate. But I think I have a different take on movie within a movie films since I work on them. A lot of stuff that might be funny to most people just reminds me of long ridonkulous days sweltering on set. The key grip punching the director was great though.KarmaPolice said:For all the hype it got, I prefer PE to Tropic Thunder. Franco is great in the movie, and I was hooked from the opening scene. Im kind of the same way with subtitles. Hard to watch a movie with them unless its that good.City of God is easily my favorite foreign film, and also the best one that Ive ever come across.SaveFerrisB said:Watched City Of God a few days ago. Great movie, and I pretty much feel the same way about sub-titles as well. You guys should really check out Mongol. It's one of the best films of 2008 imo.Im kind of the same way with subtitles. 4.5/5Zack and Mira Make A Porno: Easily the best comedy of the year. A lot of pretty crude jokes but all fit well and were damn funny! I LOL'ed many times. This movie was far, far better than Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder, Stepbrothers etc... Loved seeing "Jay" not actually playing "Jay". Elizabeth Banks4.5/5

hubba hubba)I reviewed it a while back and loved it, as did a few others I think.Watched a few this past weekend.....
28 up
I'm sure I read someone in this thread that liked it (at least someone who's opinion I give some credence), so I added it to my queue a long time ago. It arrived, didn't look that interesting and sat on my tv for a few weeks. Finally, this past weekend, it was either return it unwatched or watch it, so eff it, threw it in there.
For those of you that have never heard of it, it's a documentary from England about a group of 14 kids, and watch their lives go on. It started when they were young, like 7 or whatever in 1964, and went along each 7 years. Sounds pretty damn uninteresting. I decided to start at 28 up because, well, that sounded about right. I really found this interesting. I mean, to see some random people age kinda before your eyes, and the path their lives went along was gripping (at least to me). I have no idea why. I've immediately added 35 up and 42 up to my queue and will watch them on down the road. It's not like I'm rooting for or against any of them, and it's not like any of them have done anything exactly awe inspiring, and to someone reading this, will probably think it's a boring pile of drivel. Maybe so. I dug it. I did feel the documenter was putting a bit more emphasis on the schooling system in Britain (private vs public schools), but that fact aside, I really got interested in it. I'm not going to rate it, I think it's probably either something you really hate and is the biggest waste of time, or something that is interesting. I think it's worth a viewing though.

high praise indeedit was probably about as good as Snatch.

Notorious - 7.5 - Guy did a good job playing Biggy. My only problem is it paints Diddy out to be a saint. Maybe he was a good influence on him, but I think it being produced by Bad Boy may have somehing to do with it. Solid movie, but if you weren't interested in hip hop during this era it may not be for you.
Sounds fantastic! Thank you for the recommendation!I have read this entire thread over the past week and noted a few movies that I want to check out:
Carnivale Series 1 and 2
Once
Persona
Gone Baby Gone
A History of Violence
There Will Be Blood (watching this as soon as I finish this post)
Into The Wild
The Sweet Hereafter
Death Proof
Reading through all of the posts, I saw that quite a few people enjoy documentaries. I recently bought one for a friend and had little interest in it myself, but after seeing one of the eight episodes online I decided to buy the series for myself as well. It was one of the better decisions I have made.
The Blue Planet - Seas of Life Collector's Set
This was re-released last year with a number of bonus segments and is difficult to describe without using superlative after superlative. The photography is the best I have ever seen. There are no shots in murky water, no shaking cameras, no shots that are taken from too far away. The shots are crystal clear. It's stunning.
The narration is provided by David Attenborough. This set does not include distorted comments by divers; the narration was added afterwards. Attenborough has years of experience with documentaries such as these. He's interesting, informative, and his presentation seems urgent and filled with suppressed excitement.
The music is very fitting and adds to the mood.
My favorite episode was The Deep which is simply astounding. The footage includes 60 percent of creatures never captured on camera before, and 30 percent which are completely new to science.
The crew are not the stars of these discs; the creatures are. This is not one of those documentaries that is full of people wanting to get their faces on film.
As I said, I didn't know I would be interested. This was a great addition to my DVD collection and I urge you to see it if at all possible. It will overwhelm you, give you a new appreciation for life, and make you feel very small.
Amazon currently has the whole set (around ten hours) for $38.99.
Here's an example, but please try to catch it on DVD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9Er4dpUfrM
Warning: Very small children might find a couple of scenes shocking. A few creatures get eaten.
Watched it last night as well. Really good to see Idris Elba (Stringer Bell) back on the screen in decent material. His character played off Gerard Butler's really well. I Didn't think it was as good as either Lock Stock or Snatch, but it was a lot better put together than Revolver. I would rank it behind Snatch because the characters were just a tad less colorful than the Pikey and Brick Top. Recommended, probably the best crime/caper movie I've seen since The Bank Job but there hasn't been a whole lot of competition.I watched RockNRolla last night. Thought it was very good. Didn't like it as much as Lock Stock, but it was probably about as good as Snatch. Similar style from Guy Ritchie but with a new set of actors.
yeah, after giving it some more thought, I'd say Snatch was more enjoyable but this was nearly as good. Definitely much better than Revolver.Watched it last night as well. Swept Away down?I would watch Revolver 100 times again before I watch 5 minutes of that.Revolver had a few good scenes, it just wasn't put together very well and didn't have the ensemble cast of the other three in terms of acting talent. If it isnt already, Revolver is going to be that movie Guy Ritchie wished he never made

Unfortunately I watched this movie opening night in theatres with my girlfriend back when I was about 17. I still have physical and emotional scars from the depression bout that followed.Crossroads
I didn't see it, but I still want to make fun of it.
Britney Spears' DVD "Crossroads" has three hours of extras. That's 180 minutes. That's 179 more than I could stand to watch. I'd rather watch cockroaches devour a rotten apple.
Anyway, I couldn't imagine how they could come up with 3 hours of material, so I checked out the Amazon.com details. Here's the scoop:
Crossroads Edition Details:
* Britney's DVD Welcome
(In a bizarre move, Britney uses the phrase "##### the government" 89 times in this segment.)
* 7 Deleted Scenes with On-Camera Introductions by Tamra Davis
(They decided not to include the deleted shovel-to-head decapitation scene. Good move.)
* "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" Music Video
(Not a good video, and yet awful.)
* Photo Gallery
(Includes rare photos of Britney's secret marriage to Meatloaf.)
* Commentary by Ann Carli, Tamra Davis and Shonda Rhimes
(Forget Scorsese and Coppola. All you'll ever need to know about the art of film is right here.)
* Making of "Crossroads" - 40 Days with Britney
(Not surprisingly, Britney says "Like...oh-my-god!" 37 of those days.)
* Break Through Britney - Fun facts and inside comments accessed during the movie
(Fun Fact #16: Britney fights world terrorism in her spare time by posing as the Pakistani "Hello Kitty" regional sales manager.)
* Edit Your Own Music Video
(I especially love the feature where you can pretend to murder the guy that discovered Britney.)
* Taryn's T-Shirts - How to make the t-shirts from the "I Love Rock n' Roll" karaoke scene
(Step #1: Plug in an ordinary household iron. Step #2: Press it against your forehead and cook your brains until you feel you've been punished enough for liking Britney's music.)
* Sing Along with Britney - Karaoke Videos for "Overprotected" and "I'm Not a Girl"
(Plenty of monosyllabic words - so the songs are easy to sing.)
You get a pass since you were on a date.Unfortunately I watched this movie opening night in theatres with my girlfriend back when I was about 17. I still have physical and emotional scars from the depression bout that followed.Crossroads

AnotherGlad you liked The Visitor. The more I think about that movie, the more I loved it. I agree it takes a while to get going. That lead actor was just phenomenal. The Visitor. Watched it based on some of the recommendations in this thread and was very pleasantly surprised. Starts off a little slow, but the lead actor gives a great performance and I thought it was an excellent movie.
for The Visitor. I watched it last night and thought it was very good. The acting was terrific all around - lead by Richard Jenkins.Google "Eva Green Dreamers" and enjoy.yinzer said:Eva Green is very fine, but after watching Hitman, my favorite Bond girl EVER is Olga Kurylenko.......wow
This whole discussion is funny, for a couple of reasons. My internet being down due to ice storm kept me from posting on Wednesday when I watched RockNRolla, but I knew then that I would somehow end up defending Revolver again. First off, I liked RockNRolla, but in a meh, 3/5 way. It definitely wasn't as good as Revolver. There, I said it. Now, I know a lot of you didn't like it, I'm assuming because it devolves into intellectual commentary on the ego late in the movie, but it is a better movie than RockNRolla. And it has better characters. How anyone can not like Sorter is beyond me. That guy is pure badass. The main character of RockNRolla doesn't even put in an appearance until 45 minutes in. Don't get me wrong, I like that guy (watch Dead Man's Shoes to get a notion of his acting chops), but there was just nobody to really like in this movie. No Mickey, no Rory Breaker, no Sorter, etc. etc. And it gets to be a trilogy. Yea.
