Yeah, I am really puzzled by Boorman's direction. He does not get good performances out of his actors here. And furthermore, the film is edited and filmed very erratically.
meh. reading about it online, it just sounds like a flawed project. kind of mess really. the amalgamation of arthurian legend material doesn't make it cohesive. it certainly doesn't appease purists.boorman's done some really good work. "hell in the pacific" with toshiro mifune and lee marvin, "deliverance" and "the general" are all fine films.

I liked this as a kid, but this movie is much closer to Monty Python and The Holy Grail than I remembered. Great music by Orf and Wagner. Nice sets and costumes. But rife with terrible acting and weird pacing.
I still like it.
I think I'll always like it.
Me too. The music still gives me chills.
Me three. It's an all time great in my book. And look at the cast who were virtual unknowns at the time:

Gabriel Byrne, Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart.

mirren was the only one who had a decent role in the film. the rest were every small parts...

I agree. I liked Deliverance and Hell in the Pacific.

Friday the 13th

Disappointing. I liked My Bloody Valentine better than this as recent slasher films. New Jason was quite a bit different then the old lumbering brute I'm used to. Thought they went too far in taking some of the corniness I've come to expect out of the series. Couple of clever kills and not too much of the Hostel type "torture porn", which is a plus for me, but thats about it. I liked some of the sequels a lot better.

watched "Raising Arizona" last night -- for maybe the millionth time -- on IFC. it might be my favorite comedy of all time. i found myself really paying attention to the script and admiring how sharp it is. i keep waiting for a collector's edition for this but haven't found one yet. i would love to hear some audio commentary from the coen bros on this...

Ever listen to the commentary on Blood Simple? Most bizarre thing I've ever heard.

No! I didn't even know they had a Criterion-esque DVD out for that. Huh. What makes it bizarre? Use spoilers, if necessary.

Have Blood Simple at home now, tried a couple times to get through it, but I'm still not able to get into it. Emmett Walsh is outstanding, not sure how I feel about the rest of the film. Hopefully I can finish it this weekend. Will check out the commentary as well, excellent timing.

What's bizarre is it isn't the Coens. It's some voice actor making comments that could very well be pure improv. It's as if the Coens have contempt for commentaries and are mocking them with this weird voiceover.

Great documentary about a fantastic teacher. This guy teaches literature and music to mostly Asian and Hispanic kids in a rough Central Los Angeles neighborhood. If you are a teacher, you will love this. If you have kids, you will love this. If you want to be inspired, you will love this. Fantastic doc and only an hour long.
My special lady is a teacher. I'll queue it up for her. Thanks, holmes.
Excellent. Mrs. Dogg's a teacher and she loved it.
Thanks for this, really enjoyed it. Now I have to get me some sweet sweater vests. :goodposting: Considering the power of this teacher and all the trips they go on, I bet there is some heavy competition to get into this guy's class (Where were the white kids??)

Other great teacher movies:

Mr. Holland's Opus (my personal fav)

Stand and Deliver

October Sky

Dead Poets Society

Freedom Writers

please list any others I may have forgotten

Watched the first 10-15 minutes of Crash (Cronenburg) because I couldn't remember how Spader heads into fetish land.

Within that time, there was a car accident right outside my window :boner:

That was South Central L.A. So maybe there aren't many white kids in that area.October Sky is a great movie. The other teacher movies I like are Half Nelson, Election, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Dark Knight- saw it at the theater but it is on HBO and I DVRed it and have watched it about 3 times already. what a great movie.

Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li: Absolutely horrible. Worst video game movie ever made which is quite an achievement. I was expecting some bad acting, cool fights and was just interested in seeing how the characters were played. No good fights. Acting was beyond bad, no unintentional comedy either. Fights were weak and there was only 4 characters from the game (Chun Li, Bison, Vega and Ballrog). .00001/5

Push: Kind of a cross between Heroes and Wanted. A bunch of people with special abilities being hunted by a secret government agency. Not a bad movie but nothing special either. I dozed off for a few minutes in the middle but really didn't miss a thing. Some decent fights in it and the plot wasn't all that bad. 2/5

Interesting love story with Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes. A young man playes fiennes for the early years. Not your typical romance, as there's a big twist 1/2 way into the movie. Lots of naked Winslet if you're into that. I liked it. Not perfect, but worth a watch.

Casablanca Blu-Ray.

Good stuff.

It's strange hearing the dialogue that has inspired so many quotes.

I had to remind myself that these weren't cliches--these were the original lines.

"The usual suspects...."

"Here's looking at you kid."

"We'll always have Paris."

"A hill of beans in this world..."

And Ingrid Bergman never says "Play it again, Sam". She says, "Play it for me, Sam. For old time's sake".

Bogart banging the bartop in anguish as he remembers Illsa is still heartbreakingly great.

Just a fantastic movie. It deserves all the accolades it has received.

"Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.""I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

"The waters? What waters? We're in the desert!"

I agree. It's a great movie. Is Blu-Ray all that?...especially for such an old movie?

I just saw The Fast and the Furious for the first time. Pretty horrible, unless you're a guy, I guess, and like fast cars, and racing fast cars, and wrecking fast cars, and hot women throwing themselves at guys who drive fast cars. Not my thing. But if I were a guy, I wouldn't have even noticed how stupid the plot was.

I thought this was a top-notch movie.Better than Slumdog and Button IMO, though I'm a sucker for relationship-with-moral-dilemmas flicks....

Winslett's Oscar was well-deserved.

Just saw it 2 weeks ago and really liked it. Your take is solid. They did a good job of making Winslet look old.

Oh, a lot better than Button. I haven't seen Slumdog yet.

Ditto, big fan. I took a film class at NYU 5 years ago (damn, was it that long ago?) and one of the films we screened was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Everyone in class was stoked, because along with screening new films, the professor also had a "guest" each night. We all hoped for Jim Carrey or Kate Winslet, but were disappointed to arrive at class with no guest in attendance. Imagine our surprise the following week when Kate Winslet was there for an entire 2-hour class. Absolutely awesome. Very down to earth. Completely open with the group. Big :excited:

Year One...very meh. Never let another couple pick the movie. NEVER.
Or let your kids pick the movie...God, I wanted to strangle Micheal Cera, he talked waay too much. The only time I laughed was during the outtakes when a train ruined the scene and Jack Black went off. Otherwise, stay away, it is not even a rental

watched "the long good friday" last night. it's from the late 70's and may be bob hoskins first big movie. he plays a london crime boss whose empire begins to crumble over the course of a single day. young helen mirren plays his wife/girlfriend. a very young pierce brosnan plays an irish thug. this feels like a brian depalma knock off in many ways. i really like bob hoskins and it is fun to watch him chew up some scenery.

Saw Vicky Christine Barcelona

What a stupid movie without any real laughs. Imagine a bunch of women each talking like a Woody Allen character.

His shtick has really gotten old. The only plus was the setting and Cruz's performance.

Knowing: Nicholas Cage playing the role of Nicholas Cage. What a shocker. I enjoyed the movie even with his gawd awful acting. Not much different from most apocalyptic films except that... 2.5/5

Sunshine Cleaning: From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine. A couple sisters start a company cleaning up crime scenes. A lot of dark humor and family dysfunction in this one. It doesn't get to the level that Little Miss Sunshine did but it was very enjoyable. 3.5/5

Night Train: After a man ODs on a train a few of the passengers find a box he is carrying. Inside of it, each sees something they really want and will do anything to get. Mayhem ensues as the conductor (Danny Glover) and a couple of the passengers (Steve Zahn, Leelee Sobieski) try to dispose of the body and keep the box for themselves. The movie is listed as horror/suspense but it seemed more comedy/crime. All round it was decent. 2.5/5

Starship Troopers 1, 2, 3: I bet you didn't know there was 3 of them! Watched them all last week while traveling for work. All kinds of awesome. 10/5

She is an excellent talent. I think my favorite Winslet movies are Finding Neverland and Little Children.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Wow. What an awesome movie. I loved it. One of the best movies I've seen in years. If you read the description of the movie, you may get turned off. A French-language movie about a guy fully paralyzed by a stroke doesn't sound sexy. But this is fresh, vibrant, funny, touching work. Outstanding. Huge thumbs up.

Outlander

Liked this a lot, best monster type movie since The Host. Only complaint about the creature was why it inexplicably glowed weird colors in the dark, otherwise good use of animitronics rather than 100% CGI. Don't go into it expecting Predator, but something along the lines of 13th Warrior, I might have liked Outlander a little better.

3.5/5

Blood Simple

I feel pretty dumb putting off watching this film until now, especially as a big fan of the Coens. This is a tight, near flawless, thriller in the mold of a great Hitchcock film. It took me a while to get in to because of how subtle the opening is, but once it picks up the pace it doesn't stop. I had credited No Country For Old Men as the Coen's best dramatic effort, but this is better. Reminded me a lot of Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave, another great modern noir film.

watched "copenhagen" last night. i believe this was a PBS adaptation of the michael frayn play. stephen rea and daniel craig here play niels bohr and werner heisenberg, respectively. dramatization of a real life meeting between these two physicists in 1941 at copenhagen. heisenberg was working for the germans on developing nuclear power and, ultimately, the atomic bomb. bohr, his mentor, was the most respected physicist in europe at the time and kind of the conscience of the field in many ways.

good acting here but this is an adaptation of a play which is always hard to pull off. i think it probably reads better than its plays on stage. kind of boring and didactic.

this might be boyle's best work, imo.

Just watched Mr. Brooks for the third time.

I need to just buy this movie.

I believe this is the best movie I have seen since I don't know what or when.

"Let the Right One In": My gf and I just watched it, this morning/last night, and, frankly, we don't get all the hub-bub over it. The story was choppy, there were scenes in the movie in which it felt like just 'filler' in that they weren't necessary to the movie and overall, it was just meh. Maybe we're too dumb to get a 'higher message' or whatnot, but while it was ok, it certainly didn't feel like a movie that should be getting all the praise that it did.

The characters were not developed in the least and the editing seemed far too abrupt at times. Help us understand why this is such a great movie?

Did you watch it dubbed or subtitled?
