Garden State

I DVR'd this flick from IFC about a month ago.

It starts out really slow....really slow.

But when it picks up the pace it is a pretty good movie.

Natalie Portman is a fantastic actress.

Defiance - w/Daniel Craig, a solid movie, good action sequences and delivered a good message, hard seeing Craig outside a Bond role though, 4/5 overall

Invention of Lying - provides an interesting viewpoint on that type of world, jennifer gardner was great, a well-done relaxed comedy, not a bunch of slapstick type stuff but has some great scenes, 4/5 overall

Seven Pounds

Wasnt expecting much from this movie because it seemed to get a meh from most people, alongside a predictable ending. I beg to differ. Yes, I basically had the ending pegged for the most part after like 20-30 minutes in, but I also didnt get the feeling like it was supposed to be a surprise/twist ending or some puzzle that you had to figure out. I actually thought it was the opposite, that they wanted the viewer to see what Will Smith was going thru and planning on doing, and youre along for the journey, so to speak. His plans werent totally clear, but plenty of clues are all over the place. Man, Will Smith just seems to become a better actor every (dramatic) movie. I think he outdid his job in Pursuit of Happiness here. Roasario Dawson was also very good. Although a somewhat melancholy movie throughout, its inspiring at the same time. I almost shed some man tears at the end. 8.3/10

The Lovely Bones

Thought it was pretty good. Got a little slow in the middle third and I wish during this time there was more focus on the investigation and actual family, but the overall flow of the movie was decent. Spent more time in the dead girl's "world" than I expected, but the special effects were pretty sweet during those scenes (although after seeing Avatar, theyre almost disappointing). Reminded me of the movie What Dreams May Come in those parts, but better, quicker, and less melodramatic. Stanley Tucci was excellent and Im not suprised he got nominated for BSA at the GGlobes. Susan Sarandon was great in a smaller role, Wahlberg and Weisz did their usual solid work, and the girl was surprisingly good as well. Didnt end quite as I expected, but the ending was good nonetheless. It was my sister's favorite book for awhile, and she thought the missed a few important things here and there and skimmed other, but thought it was good. 7.6/10

Crazy Heart

Incredible performances carry this film about a broken down c&w singer. Jeff Bridges should get an Oscar for his portrayal. You will not think for a moment that he is not the character. While their roles were less flashy, I thought Maggie Gyllenhaal and especially Colin Farrell well also outstanding. Its is a familiar tale with no surprises, but I spent a delightful afternoon enjoying the show. (still in theatres)

4/5 stars

I really enjoyed Lying. Lots of fun and some actual thought behind it. Sometimes veered toward the trappings of trite, but always managed to right itself and steer clear. Amazing job, really.4/5

Pandorum It seems like every person's review Ive read for this has been positive, many to the extent of this being one of the best sci-fi thrillers in awhile. I thought it was good but that definitely raised my expectations, and not sure Id go that far. I thought it kind of tailed off over the last third of the movie. Dennis Quaid's storyline towards the end kind of bothered me and took away from the movie. Definitely worth the rental though........7.8/10

Couldnt use the SPOILER function, so dont read the white text below:

What Im talking about towards the end was how they used the Dennis Quaid "this is my ship" or "youre not getting off of my ship angle". Felt like a blatent rip off of Sam Neill's character in Event Horizon (better movie IMO), and that definitely detracted from the movie for me. It seemed very unnecessary as well and like it was thrown in there to wow the viewer or something

Finally watched Inglorious Basterds... I'll get back to writing a bit more later, but I found it too slow-paced and essentially a waste of time. Tarantino writes some great charaters- particularly the hyper-intelligent-amoral-bad-guy- but their voices have started to really blend for me. That opening scene (German guy's Oscar bump) sounded like too many of QT's other movies, IMO. Felt like this one also couldn't find it's direction- not enough push one way or the other (comedy, drama, gore, cartoon, etc) to convince me of any of the characters or plot. fan of QT, but thought this was a big step back for him.

Yeah. Ugh. Had to read too much of that to get to what you thought, which is why I asked in here vs in there. (thanks for the link though)What you liked, as far as I had the time to read, was the layering of suspense born from dialogue... basically? This was, IMO, a failure. Every chapter had the same underlying theme- something violent is going to happen, and at least one of the people talking knows more than they're letting on. I get it. I thought the pacing of it was too monotonous chapter to chapter, I thought the characters were too cartoonish and undeveloped for me to care, and again- I thought the dialogue was too one-voiced... and a voice I've heard enough of already from QT.

Also again- I genuinely like QT as a director. Didn't see Death Proof, but saw the rest and really like every one of his movies. They all had me from the get-go in the theaters and all continue to grow on me when I catch them on TV. I'm guessing I'll grow to appreciate more of Basterds when it comes around to HBO/etc and I have time to give it another shot. Technically stunning- that Shoshanna film burning scene is as iconic a moment in film as I've seen for a long time. But I just don't care about the increasing look-at-me homage element of his movies running things and really found it disappointing this time around.

I really bought into District 9 for the first half hour or so, but it all fell apart for me after that. I barely finished it.

Quest for Fire

Available on Netflix instant viewing. There is no dialogue in the movie, only cave man grunts. Monkey people steal Cave people's fire, Cave people send a crew out to get it back. Mastadon scene missed the mark, but the Sabertooth cats were pretty cool. Just an awesome movie that still looks great.

I am surprised that a Tarantino fan doesn't like Basterds.

Legion

Slow and boring are the only words that come to mind. Although not quite as bad as Halloween 2 . Now all I can think about is Rob Zombie's wife hanging out with a white horse and crappy Moody Blues music playing in the background.

Whiteout

Snoozer of a murder mystery in Antarctica. I am glad I didn't pay to see this in a theater. I was thinking about whodunnit about half way in and my suspicions were correct in the end. Lame ending indeed.

I almost went to see this last weekend, but I read that if I had seen the trailers, I'd seen about everything in the film worth seeing. So I went to see Crazy Heart instead and loved it.

Theatre.

"Daybreakers".

Vampire movie with Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke. Not horrible, but not recommended either. Different vampire movie plot, which was refreshing, but the plot still was lacking, and the vampire "cure" was very stupid. Acting was meh, and the visuals were ok. Decent gore.

Recently watched....

Julie and Julia - It was entertaining for 2 hours and that's all i really expected. My wife, who loves to cook, loved it.
Just watched this last night. The Julie half of the movie was meh, but Meryl Streep nailed the Julia Child portrayal. I remember catching a few episodes of Julia Child's show and Streep obviously studied these shows carefully because I thought I was actually watching Child herself during this movie. It's cliche to say, but Streep deserves an Oscar nod next week when the nominations are made. Is it too late to add this role to the 'Best Performances of the '00s' thread?

Saw the advertisements on the tube for this many times, and had no clue Dafoe or Hawke were even in it

watched "hard candy" tonight. ellen page, of "juno" fame in her first big role, plays a young woman that baits and traps a man she believes in a pedophile. she believes he may know what happened to a friend. it is essentially a two person film that has moments of tension. it runs on a little too long but is still pretty good.

Really? I thought it was a little out there. She was supposed to be what, 14? Come on. I had trouble suspending my disbelief.

Anyone seen Big Fan with Patton Oswalt ...hadn't heard of it then saw an earlier thread referencing it. Got good reviews - looks like it could be excellent.
I haven't seen it, but I've read a lot of glowing reviews. Looks good.
Just watched it last night, it's available on Netflix instant watch. It was pretty good, not exactly a laugh out loud comedy though. It deals with obsession more than anything. Reminded me a lot of Bottle Rocket with a darker tone, I was kind of unprepared for it really. I thought it was heading for a let down but the third act had a surprise or two for me. It was written/directed by the guy that wrote the Wrestler so expect something a little more along those lines more than a goofball comedy.3.5/5

Quantum of Solace - I have no idea what this movie was about.
:lmao: I've been revisting all of the Bond films and was surprised that this is more of a general theme to the series. I seem to only have remembered the Bond films I've seen over and over since childhood, but the ones I've never seen before I have to watch a couple times to even begin to fully grasp what is going on.

So I guess its in line with the originals more than the Bronson ones that were fairly straight forward, yet poorly written for the most part. (I love Goldeneye, probably my favorite of the entire series still). Playing the N64 game for about 5000 hours as a teen may a heavy influence on this as well.

she says that she's 14 but she clearly used that to bait the guy. the whole fiction she has created is to lure him, frighten him, and unbalance him throughout the movie. conceptually, the movie works for me for quite a while before it overreaches and falls apart.

I've been away for a while....

Inglorious Basterds - Loved it. Funny, great acting, and great characters. One of my favorite movies of the last few years.

Tyson- The Mike Tyson documentary. Very good doc, especially, if you like docs. It had plenty of new footage. It helps you understand the man a little better. Still a lunatic.

Beer League - Artie Lange is a funny guy and this is a fun movie if you are in a softball league.

The Man without a face - An old Mel Gibson movie, very meh. Story of a disfigured guy who helps a kid study so he can get into military school. Parents end up thinking he molested the kid. very blah.

Showgirls - Had never seen this one. Know a few people who swear by it. OMG man this was a bad movie. Almost painful to watch. The rape scene is ridicolous and doesn't make a lick of sense. Pretty terrible overall.

I've got the Mist qued up.

I liked this a lot, although it was painful to watch at times as a guy.Ellen Page in Hard Candy >>>>>>>> Juno
