Pan's Labyrinth

I've been meaning to see this for years. But since the wife and I usually watch movies together, she's been too scared to see it. Wow. What a stunning accomplishment. I loved it. My only beef was the extreme violence. I don't think the graphic gore contributed to the story. Still, what a fantastic movie. The antagonist is certainly one of the most evil in movie history, and I think the lead child actor was excellent. I could go on and on, but you've all heard the accolades before. Huge thumbs up.

Watching this movie, I couldn't help but think of some of the trash that has won best picture Oscars over the last few years. Crash, Chicago, Million Dollar Baby, Titanic, The English Patient, Forrest Gump, Driving Miss Daisy, Rain Man...these movies aren't even in the same universe as Pan's Labyrinth.

I know I'm a broken record on this, but I still think The Orphanage is better (although Pan's really is great).

Okay I didn't like Awakenings and as much as I liked Billy Bob in Sling Blade I think Hoffman was infinitely better as Rain Man. Sure Hoffman doesn't look anything like Kim Peek but really did a great job with his speech and mannerism.What about DDL as Christy Brown? Is that acceptable?

Scanners - Not the most cohesive movie but Cronenburg is awesome at creating a tension through sound and patience. Some of the sequences were disturbing but at the same time awesome in the gruesomeness they displayed.

Watched this last night and I am still digesting it. Despite it's flaws, I would say that it's one of the better movies I've seen recently (which might not be saying much considering the dreck I've been wading through). I didn't read the books, but was surprised at a couple of scenes and the level of brutality throughout the movie. I would've liked a little more back story on the main characters - especially Lisbeth, but since the books were written as a triology, maybe that is coming. I've heard the other movies aren't nearly as good, so I might skip those and just read the books. Also, it looks like an Americanized version is coming out in a couple of years (of course)

For those who don't know - the story is about a journalist and a hacker teaming up to solve a 40 year old murder in a family that seems to be the Swedish version of the Kennedys. Good suspense, and I liked the way it was shot, but I didn't buy into the relationship between Lisbeth and the journalist. Still would recommend people checking it out.

You are right - just saw the review in the USA Today. From what I've read, it's a different director/writer, etc.. and it is inferior to the quality of the one on DVD.

Watched 28 Weeks Later last night.

It is a decent addition to the horror/zombie genre, but not nearly as good as the first one. For lack of a better description, I just thought the movie was 'ugly'. I guess I didn't like the fact that the kids were involved so much in the movie or that the makers of the movie kept trying to hard to make the dad seem like an uber-zombie or something. Slightly above average for the genre, but I don't think I'd watch it again.

Not even close to the first one. Not bad....but like you I have no desire to watch it again and also felt it added nothing to the first story.

I think it started to do an OK job of setting up what happened during the 28 weeks and having a small part of England safe while other parts were dangerous. I thought it was good for about 30 mins - until they started getting infected again. Also - it's kinda silly that the kids were able to basically just walk out of there.

Really liked 28 Days Later, good taut thriller. 28 Weeks later was OK, but got silly at the end. I am actually waiting for the final of the trilogy, 28 Months Later.

Scanners - Not the most cohesive movie but Cronenburg is awesome at creating a tension through sound and patience. Some of the sequences were disturbing but at the same time awesome in the gruesomeness they displayed.

Predators.....Finally, an installment in the series that does the original film justice. Grabs your attention from the opening scene and the tension is there almost the entire time until the end. Its biggest strength may in fact be the first 45 minutes or so as the people becomes more comfortable with each other, the environment, and try to figure out where they are and why they are there, which occurs with perfect pace and quite a lot of suspense despite rarely seeing a Predator. The character development was surprisingly good for this type of movie, and I thought the cast's interactions were very good. Goggins with a few funny lines that almost come out of nowhere and easily the best character besides Brody (plus badass final scene). Only complaints really would be Fishburne's character/storyline felt to me like it hurt the movie more than added to it, and all in all was unnecessary. IMO, it kind of took me out of the atmosphere and feel the movie had presented and maintained so well, and from that point on the movie felt more rushed compared to the first half for the most part. Despite that, the action sequences from that point on were quite good, and the blood and gore was not kept to a minimum, which is a good thing for me. I thought the weapons were great, and this movie distances itself from the first in that aspect and others, including how Brody and the rest of the humans decide to play "the game", which was another strength of the movie and gave certain parts more believability to me. I thought it was easily the 2nd best movie of the series, and certainly worth the price to see it up on the big screen.....8/10

Predators.....Finally, an installment in the series that does the original film justice. Grabs your attention from the opening scene and the tension is there almost the entire time until the end. Its biggest strength may in fact be the first 45 minutes or so as the people becomes more comfortable with each other, the environment, and try to figure out where they are and why they are there, which occurs with perfect pace and quite a lot of suspense despite rarely seeing a Predator. The character development was surprisingly good for this type of movie, and I thought the cast's interactions were very good. Goggins with a few funny lines that almost come out of nowhere and easily the best character besides Brody (plus badass final scene). Only complaints really would be Fishburne's character/storyline felt to me like it hurt the movie more than added to it, and all in all was unnecessary. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo:

Watched this last night and I am still digesting it. Despite it's flaws, I would say that it's one of the better movies I've seen recently (which might not be saying much considering the dreck I've been wading through). I didn't read the books, but was surprised at a couple of scenes and the level of brutality throughout the movie. I would've liked a little more back story on the main characters - especially Lisbeth, but since the books were written as a triology, maybe that is coming. I've heard the other movies aren't nearly as good, so I might skip those and just read the books. Also, it looks like an Americanized version is coming out in a couple of years (of course)

For those who don't know - the story is about a journalist and a hacker teaming up to solve a 40 year old murder in a family that seems to be the Swedish version of the Kennedys. Good suspense, and I liked the way it was shot, but I didn't buy into the relationship between Lisbeth and the journalist. Still would recommend people checking it out.

Wow. This was a great movie. One of the best I have seen in a long time. I feared it was going to be talky and melodramatic, but I was wrong. It was sharp and crackling throughout its 2.5 hour length. Most films, I'll glance at the clock between the 60-70 min mark anticipating their end. I did not look at the clock in this one until the 100 min mark and it was with the hope that I was less than halfway done. This is a must see, but it has some brutal scenes of sexual violence that many may not care to watch.One thing that bothered me- I had some distinct feelings I had seen some scenes before. I do not know whether I saw some extended trailers a long time ago or what. Esp. the girl's work for the security company and the dried flowers arriving every birthday. I'd swear I'd seen those before somewhere. Weird deja vu feeling, but it did not detract from my overall love of this film.

Unearthed: This might actually be worse than The Happening but I'm not really sure. I think it was about an Alien trying to kill a bunch of people. I'd know better if I was actually able to see anything. About halfway through, I turned the brightness on my TV all the way up and I was still barely able to make stuff out. I really don't understand the thought behind this. Directors throw in lots of dark scenes to try and make it scary but half the time you end up not being able to see anything. This movie was set in a town with like 4 buildings in it; a big ranch, bar, gas station and something else. Never once could I tell where they were. When the alien attacked and killed someone, I had no idea who. I'd have to wait and see who was missing. A 12 year old could have directed a better movie. What an absolute disgrace. -9125915/5

I feared this was going to be another bland teenage comedy, but it was dark and I laughed out loud several times.

Look at his work since Adaptation and you tell me. It's like he stopped acting and decided just to personify himself on the screen.
