Seriously? No offense but I think that would have destroyed a beautifully crafted film.

Would have really pissed me off.

I thought about this film enough today to probably agree with you guys. I even recommended it to my dad tonight, who is Missouri folk himself. I'm curious to see what he comes back with. His complaint is always that films aren't realistic enough so hopefully this works for him.Also, please don't ever worry about offending me on this board. I'm fair game and any retorts I would have are going to be in good humor. Some of the people on this board take this stuff way too seriously. Thankfully nobody in this thread.

I am not very good at figuring out mysteries in movies, but I agree about liking the subtle way they portrayed that criminal organization.

When I first saw the trailer, I was impressed by the effects. But when I read the cast list, it seemed to be stocked with B movie actors. Sure enough, I was reading a trade publication, and apparently these filmmakers tend to make movies that would normally go straight to DVD. But they are just clever enough with special effects so that the movie won release in theaters.

Thinking about grouping 3-4 movies from a director and getting through them before moving onto another director. Maybe at the same time (if there is one) getting a book from the library and digging into that director a little bit more from that side too. Basically a personal movie club - anybody else is welcome to come along for the ride too.

Looking for suggestions, and I am sure that I'll get a lot of them. Don't want too many that I've seen before, but there are probably 3 Kubrick movies I haven't seen either. What would you guys suggest for directors/movies/books to start this project??

I'd add Wim Wenders, Egoyan, Bergman didn't make that list (!?!), Herzog, Welles off the top of my head. (eta: and of course Malick)re: Woody Allen- Have you seen Annie Hall, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Broadway Danny Rose or Sleeper? I feel like he's been repeating himself for a while now and have basically stopped watching his movies, but the ones I just listed, and a lot of what he was doing in the 70s and early 80s is very worthy of watching/discussing.

Yes and no. I don't know if you saw Vicky Christina Barcelona, but I enjoyed that movie - and it's different than a lot of Allen movies. Also, while it wasn't great per se, Cassandra's Dream was a well made melodrama.

Watched Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The people who said they'd sterilize it for America are right. No way they show the "big" scenes here - and I'm not sure they need to. It's necessary to develop Lisbeth as a character, but the same effect could have been achieved by showing the lead up and not the acts, if you follow me. I don't need to SEE what happened to KNOW what happened. In fact, I think some subtlety might be even more effective, and it certainly would have made me less sick to my stomach.

With that said, I really enjoyed the movie. I gave up on the book cause I was bored, but this is one time when the movie way outshined the novel. I don't think Micke was as true to his novel character, but I can overlook that. The mystery intrigued me, I loved the ending, and I look forward to the next installment.

I thought Cassandra's Dream was painfully bad. Wish I could remember why... just remember finding it cringe-worthy pretty much through-out... oh, IIRC, see my bolded part above as one of the reasons.I think Bullets Over Broadway was pretty great. And I love his first few screw-ball comedies- What's New #####cat, What's Up Tiger-Lilly (took an old chinese? thriller and dubbed in his own storyline), Take the Money and Run, Play it Again Sam... they're all imperfect, but pretty fun.

Bullets Over Broadway is awesome. If you can get past Kenneth Branaugh parroting Allen for the entire movie, there are some great performances in Celebrity. If you want to see four really good looking people for an entire movie, you'll like Vicky Christina Barcelona.

Amistad is worth seeing once. Close Encounters, for all the press it's gotten, is pretty boring, IMO.

E.T. and Raiders are both in my top 10 favorite movies of all time.

I also always kind of liked Always.

Big fan of The Color Purple. Acting was superb all around, even Whoopie and Oprah. Really enjoyed Empire of the Sun as well.

Duel over Amistad for sure. I thought 1941 kind of sucked, probably just didn't age well.

A.I. is one of my all time favorite sci fi films, I would shut it off when you think it should be over about 20 minutes before it actually ends. Drags out wayyyyy to long and almost becomes a different film after that.

I've bought maybe 3 DVDs since I subscribed to Netflix 4 years ago. (Hot Rod, Red Dawn, Punisher War Zone)

I was just stunned at how violent this movie was. Probably the best collection of death scenes I've ever seen in a movie.

The one I'm referring to is the newer one with the dude from Rome, its much more violent.I'm a huge fan of the Punisher comics, it was pretty much all I collected as a kid and I think this movie captures the zany, morbid, essence perfectly. McNulty from the Wire is over the top to the point of distraction, but Doug Hutchinson is tremendous as Looney Bin Jim.

Really disappointed this flopped as I was all anxious of seeing Ray Stephenson in a sequel. Being one of like 6 people in the theater opening night for it kind of nixed my expectations on that.

I VERY rarely turn off a movie I have rented (probably 2-3 since I got Netflix 3 years ago and 500 movies ago - another movie I turned off 1/3 through was The Spirit) but after about 25 minutes of this trash I had to turn it off. It was over the top, horribly acted and the special effects were embarrassing. The first Punisher was pretty darn bad, but watchable, Punisher War Zone is what happens when you give some dumb talentless people 20 million dollars to waste.

Watched Best Worst Movie last night. Recommended for those that like documentaries. Tells the story of the supposed "Worst Movie Ever Made" in Troll 2. Starts slow, but I enjoyed it. The director of Troll 2 comes off as a huge doosher. I've seen clips of the movie before, and they were laughably bad. This film definitely makes you want to see it, although it does seem that those that it appeals to are largely gay, NTTAWWT. Found it today that Troll 2 is on streaming, so I'll check it out in the near future too. (4/5)

Thanks for the recommendation. I've never seen Troll 2, but I was aware of it's IMDB ranking and general consensus it was among the worst. I didn't think the director was a doosher at all, I'm glad he didn't take himself so seriously to be totally offended at how people enjoyed his movie because it was so bad. I had no idea it had that kind of cult following though. I didn't quite finish it last night before going to bed, but now I can't wait to watch Troll 2. The main actor guy it started with kind of gave me the creeps, I mean nobody is really like that, are they? I see he played Edwin Gophercum in Street Team Massacre from 2007. Talk about an all time great character name.To the bolded part, I don't think they were necessarily gay, but they were definitely hipsters and emos. Who else would watch this garbage so many times?

Disagree about Duel, which I found to be silly. Interesting from the point of view of knowing that this was his first and all and seeing glimpses of how he edits and puts scenes together. But other than that, silly.1941 was pretty bad- but I haven't seen it since the theaters... I'm wondering if there's something to be redeemed there.

AI... oof. Agree with Chaka on it- all of Spielberg's shmarmy, emotionally manipulative worst, IMO, despite having an interesting premise.

Empire of the Sun is a solid movie, well worth the watch on a variety of levels. IMO, the best of your "haven't seen yet" list.

Always... more of a Lifetime Network type of thing, but not a bad movie.

Amistad.. good, not great movie. Rides the line between the AI obviousness/manipulation and just telling an interesting story, but it worked for me. Some great performances, IIRC.

And just seeing Raiders listed makes me want to see it again- it's like he decided to out-Lucas Lucas on the pulp/B-movie thing, except he did it fantastically well.

I think Duel was a very layered film that you could dig pretty deep into if you wanted. I kind of think its a forgotten gem of the genre and you can tell Speilberg was capable of doing something great if given a budget. A lot of the stuff he used in Jaws works in Duel with a semi instead of a shark.

That's a better way of looking at it than straight up, which is where the "silly" comments come in. To be honest, I don't remember too much of it, other than the overriding story line, so any layers have been lost to me (although I don't remember coming away from it really feeling the need to be thingking about it..)

While I think about this more, I think I am going to start with a safe, accessible director and go with Mr. Spielberg. There's still a few movies of his I haven't seen, and a few that I've only seen once or haven't watched in a long time.

Despite really bad reviews, I thought A.I. was very interesting. I think that Munich could be the best movie he ever made.

I VERY rarely turn off a movie I have rented (probably 2-3 since I got Netflix 3 years ago and 500 movies ago - another movie I turned off 1/3 through was The Spirit) but after about 25 minutes of this trash I had to turn it off. It was over the top, horribly acted and the special effects were embarrassing. The first Punisher was pretty darn bad, but watchable, Punisher War Zone is what happens when you give some dumb talentless people 20 million dollars to waste.

Well, it wouldn't be a guilty pleasure if everyone liked it.

Ironic, since I couldn't make through 15 minutes of the previous Punisher version starring Thomas Jayne. This new Punisher is an exploitation flick. Nothing more. It's high camp in the tradition of movies like The Toxic Avenger. I love it.
