Green Street Hooligans is pretty good. Didn't expect Froto to pull off his role but he did pretty good. Also didn't know that English soccer fans were this passionate about their teams.

antonio gaudi... 1:15 documentary with almost no narration... this won't be for everybody, but it was one of the best documentaries i've ever seen, and one of best movies i can remember from any genre in past few years... OOP but netflix has (i don't have netflix but i checked)... recorded from TCM and have watched a few times (cool, meditative soundtrack is good for background even when i write)... gaudi is the spanish surrealist architect that lived over a century ago, and supposedly had an influence on fellow spaniard dali, among other surrealists... the word that leaps to mind about his structures (aside from surreal) is ORGANIC... almost no straight lines... fantastic fusion of image & sound with a haunting sound track by japanese composer... unfolds at a very leisurely pace that lends itself well to stunning images so you can better savor them... though many may have seen exteriors of his more famous works, there are some interiors that are just as and even more unbelievable... the description below from amazon put it far better than i could...

"Creator of one of the most bizarre and organic styles in the history of architecture, Antonio Gaudi Cornet, Spain's national treasure, was blessed with not only the vision, but the patronage that allowed him to build his elaborate and surreal designs. With Antonio Gaudi, Japanese director Hiroshi Teshigahara (Woman in the Dunes) gives a tour of the makings of Gaudi's world. Almost entirely without narration, Teshigahara guides us instead with an eerie score by Toru Takemitsu and a few subtitles. The film is more a poem than a documentary, but don't expect an approach similar to Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi. Instead we are given a quiet soundtrack that mixes Takemitsu's sparse score with the natural sounds surrounding Gaudi's structures, and a stationary camera presents the buildings as if they have sprouted: supports seem to magically erupt from the ground like roots, and our eyes are led through the textures and patterns of Gaudi's elaborate mosaic stone and brick designs. Visually revealing and comprehensive, Teshigahara leaves us with only one thing to do--to view Gaudi's amazing world with our own eyes." --Ted Sonnenschein

"A spellbinding visual journey through the enchanted world of the great Spanish architect whose work influenced Picasso, Miro and Dali. A mind-blowing sensory experience like "Koyaanisqatsi," this film follows every curve of Gaudi's colorful, organic--and sometimes even erotic--architecture. Like "The Mystery of Picasso," Academy Award-nominated director Hiroshi Teshigahara (Woman in the Dunes) captures the grand scope of the artist's creative genius. The haunting score by Toru Takemitsu helps bring the fantastical visions of this architectural celebrity to life." (product description)

Watched Downfall this morning. Very good movie although it seemed a little long. Amazing portrayal by the actor playing Hitler. The acting was very good, but I just didn't think it was gritty enough. It just didn't seem completely authentic, looked a little too cheesy at times. Mostly in the bunker.

Still a very good movie and worth the rental.
I love this movie. For me, this is a film that gets better as the weeks and months pass. Certainly long, and hard to watch, but a brilliant production.

I'll agree with this, because I wound up thinking more about the movie in the days following. Movies never have that much staying power with me to last weeks or months but Downfall does get a slightly better rating from me now a week later. I still stand by my description of the production, but the movie does linger enough to gain an added appreciation for it.

Just saw The Proposition an Australian western with Guy Pearce.

I thought it was outstanding. Superb acting and cinematography with a very good storyline by Nick Cave. A visceral film in the tradition of Sergio Leone. Highly recommended.
    Great movie. I joked that there were so many flies in the film, all the actors deserve Oscars for being able to perform under those conditions. But the film itself is outstanding. I liked it so much I started a new thread with this review:

I saw an Australian film called "The Proposition" a couple of hours ago. Let me say with no sarcasm that this makes the HBO series "Deadwood" look like Sesame Street. This is the ugliest, dirtiest, most painful film I have seen in a long time. I am fairly certain that The Proposition is NOT endorsed by The Australian Board Of Tourism.

On the surface, The Proposition is a standard Western revenge drama. But it has art house sensibilities. While there is some very gruesome violence, a lot of thought went into this film. You might want to shower after seeing The Proposition, but that's not a reason to avoid it. Though The Proposition is only for appropriate for certain tastes, I highly recommend it.

The script is written by musician Nick Cave. Cave also composed the music.
Just caught this one and let me say.... Wow. The sounds and the attention to small detail are incredible in this movie. The flies, the violence, the fact that when someone bleeds ( like when the younger brother got belted in the mouth or when the guy blew his toes off) it sounds like water being dumped out of a glass....not some little trickle that you barely notice. An excellent Western with a great cast. Guy Pearce might have been the big name in this... but hats off to Ray Winstone in an incredible performance. This is one that is a must see for any Western fan. Like the poster above said.... it did make Deadwood like Sesame Street. The only remotely comparable movie that I've seen released recently was A History of Violence...... and this made that look like an Afterschool Special.

Glad you liked it. I'd say that this movie is the polar opposite of a date film. So men, if you are going to rent this one, don't expect your woman to sit through it.

Memoirs of a Geisha

Wasn't bad, actually kinda liked this one (as did the wife). Characters played their roles very well, and it was interesting to see how everything progressed. The ending was a little disappointing, but then I guess it did what it was intended to do which was point out how the main character's life finally ended up. A good rent if you are looking for a fairly long drama to sit down to some nite, particulary with your SO.

Little Miss Sunshine

meh. C+. it wasn't what i expected. there were some funny moments. but all in all it was more depressing than funny.
i am really surprised by your lukewarm response to it. it is a very gentle kind of comedy for the most part. it's not high comedy or art for that matter but i found it very funny. i found it vaguely affirming and sort of feel good.
hmm.. it was too depressing for me. guess i never really connected with the characters or something. just didn't do it for me.Alan Arkin was the star of the show as far as i was concerned... and well.. you know.

Saw Crimson Tide last night. Not too shabby.

I will say this: Seeing Lex Luthor (Hackman) and Tony Soprano (Gandolfini) lead a revolt had me cracking up.

GSE could have been an awesome movie if not for Elijah Wood. Apparently Orlando Bloom pulled out of the project at the last minute. 3 out of 5 stars

Thank You For Smoking

I thought it was great. An 8 out of 10.

It contains one of the best lines EVER:

Nick Naylor [out loud]: "I just need to pay the mortgage"

Nick Naylor [to himself]: "The yuppie Nuremburg defense."

Saw this one the other day. Funny as hell.

Cool movie. Wood was just terrible, though :X

Watched "Running Scared." Meh. It was average. Paul Walker is a bad actor. But that wasn't the worst part of this movie. If I am going to watch nothing but scumbags for 2 hours, the writing and the acting need to be quality. But this was mediocre enough to where the sickness of some of these characters comes across as exploitive and depraved.

Watched Syriana last week. A bit heavy handed with the message, but a pretty powerful story nonetheless. I heard that it was hard to follow, but I didn't really find that. Overall, I liked it.
That was my take as well. Although I would like to have seen the Clooney and Damon roles reversed. It probably would have been a much better film, although less profitable, with fewer stars and more unknowns.

Stick It

You know, the gymnastics movie?

Actually, it wasn't bad. The story is pretty (read: terribly) standard. Bad girl (who's only bad because of something in her past but she's really good) gets one more chance movie. Some funny moments. Overall, it gets about a 6.5 to start.

But just like gymnastics, it gets a "difficulty" multiplier. And that multiplier is that there are a bunch of early 20-year-olds in leotards trying to pass themselves off as teenagers. And that bumps the movie up to a 7.0.

Rewatched "Kikujiro no natsu", funny movie by Takeshi Kitano about a boy who wants to search for his mother and gets accompanied by a good for nothing guy who brings them both in a lot of trouble. Very entertaining, could be watched with women and they would like it too.

Lucky Number Slevin

You know what? I really really liked it. I give it an 8/10. The only thing that keeps it from an 8.5 is the gratuitous sex scenes at the beginning.

Tight plot, Miller Crossing-esque dialog exchanges, and good acting make it very entertaining. Even if I did start piecing it together half way through, which I rarely do.

Enthusiastic

Butterfly Effect 2 - Not too bad for a direct to video sequel. If you enjoyed the first one and aren't expecting too much, then this is worth a rental.

Agreed.

I liked it as well. Yes, you are able to piece some things together and it seemed they made it obvious on purpose, but the ride to get there was enjoyable. Entertaining movie.

 I timed it perfect so I only had Thank You For Smoking, and X-men in my BB que, it has said long wait for a week now, and still nothing.

 I'm not 14 anymore and it added nothing to the story. Although I must say that second blond girl was lights out.

The Transporter

Not impressed. There was a little suspense toward the beginning of the movie (you KNOW one of the "packages" is going to contain a surprise, but what?). The initial car chase scene was ok but almost TOO over the top. The fight scenes seemed to drag. The ending was just ho hum. And I really thought the acting was just poor in general ("I know he's a *******, but he IS my father").

I'm glad it was only 90 minutes long. Much better action/thrillers out there to see instead of this one.

Rented The Ladykillers (Coen Brothers comedy).

The Ladykillers is a silly comedy with Tom Hanks by the Coen Brothers. Not for everyone, but fans of "The Big Lebowski" and "O' Brother Where Art Thou?" may enjoy The Ladykillers. The juxtaposition of the anachronistic Hanks character with his hip hop cohort was really amusing.

I saw X3 this weekend.

Good if you liked the other two. The editing could have been tighter. A few surprises that if they make an X4 they'll have a hard time explaining.

I have to disagree on this one. I think I was expecting too much, but I didn't find it that entertaining. Some funny parts (I liked the "MOD squad" scenes), but I thought they wasted a pretty impressive cast. 5.5/10

Defintiely a Coen Bros film in the feel of it but I really didn't find it funny or clever.

Watched Dog Soldiers this weekend, it was not bad but I was not expecting much. Lots of action but major plot holes and bad writting. Some parts of it seem to want to be a comedy. Overall I give it a B.

In some ways, it was dumb. But I guess it just worked for me.

It's a decent movie but, as is often said, the original was better. It was a funny movie to begin with and this didn't bring anything new to the table.

For some mindless fun, we decided to check out Talladega Nights at the dollar theater. I thought it was awful and I found Anchorman pretty damn funny. It just didn't have any laugh out loud moments for me.

saw both "The Departed" and "The Sentinel" this weekend.

"The Sentinel" was so meh that i don't really remember seeing it at all.

Sahara -- Predictable, mindless action film. Penelope Cruz is really hot, though. Its fine for mindless action.

The Station Agent -- Like everyone else, I thought this movie was great.

1. Wolf Creek - Took a little too long to get going in my opinion, but that may have been due to the fact I knew it was a horror movie. If I thought it was just going to be this little travelogue and suddenly it turns into a slasher flick I might have appreciated it more.

If you've never seen a horror movie before, you might consider the following a spoiler.

I'd like to start a collection of horror movie scenes where people have the drop on the killer, knock him out, but don't kill him...and then are completely surprised when he pops up later.
This film is loaded with these kinds of "horror movie 101" basics.2. Final Destination 3 - Like the other two before it, FD3 has some quality kills, but is kind of a mess. Something about these characters didn't click with me like the characters from the first two, and the direction was a little jagged. All in all, still a nice companion piece to the other two. Worth renting if you're a fan of the first two.

Worst movie ever.

The Wayans character takes you out of the movie in every scene he shows up in. It's like they couldn't decide if they wanted to do an homage and make this an "old timey" film or if they wanted to shock it up modern style.

That bizarre mixture is what worked for me :)

Good movie. You know what's unique about it? It's a film about friendship. I am so tired of romantic films. So it's refreshing to see a film that doesn't rely on a romantic theme for content.
