so i have been watching some of the first few episodes of "terriers". shawn ryan - of the shield fame - is one of the exec producers for the show. it's good fun so far and i can see why some feel a little bummed it wasn't picked up for a second season. probably because the title stinks but whatever. donal logue does that raffish thing that he's been doing since "The Tao of Steve" but it works a little better here. good chemistry with the other guy too. it doesn't take itself too seriously. kind of reminds me of "veronica mars" in some ways.

Drive: Umm... yeah. Some pretty dumb stuff in it. Terrible ending. Only really good thing about it was chase scenes. 1.5/5
??that movie was easily a 4/5

wow some of these reviews are bad
Oh, well then. I guess I was wrong. It was fantastic!!!! 4/5!
???that movie was easily a 1/5

wow some of these reviews are bad
Gawd damnit. Now I have no idea if I liked it or not.

I just started watching Breaking Bad and am 6 eps in on season 1. Really liking it so far. Does it keep it up in future seasons?

So I came across the Star Wars Holiday Special out there on the tubes and thought I'd check it out with the kids, since they are big into Star Wars at the moment. I've read Lucas hated it and tried to have it destroyed but hell, he gave us jar jar binks so what does he know, right?

Sweet Jesus it was friggin' horrible! Way too many wookies doing that chewbacca noise, Harvey Korman and Bea Arthur looking like they wanted to kill their agents, Carrie Fischer looking stoned, Harrison Ford obviously mailing it in for the check or contract obligation, cheesy 70's disco music and craptastic dance skits. I seriously considered taking my own life halfway in.

Of course, my kids thought it was great (7 and 5). I must be raising them wrong.

it really is one of those "WTF" television moments. think of KISS on the paul lynde halloween special with pinky tuscadero, florence henderson, tim conway and witchiepoo.

Happy Life Day. :bye:

I can actually remember watching The Holiday Special on TV when it came out. I distinctly remember Lumpy pushing the button on his machine telling the troopers to "Return To Base".

Not a highlight of my childhood, to be sure.

i remember watching it too but the details of the show remained pretty hazy. i watched most of it a few years ago with friends on a lark.

It was a good show that definitely wasn't promoted right from the beginning. It deserved a second season but they do wrap up the only one pretty well. It's worth watching even just for the one season.

Me too! 1st episode sucked me in completely. Brilliantly acted, written, and shot. Wow. Reminds me of the feeling I had watching season 1 of Dexter.

Where did you find it?

I have never seen the Star Wars holiday special and to be honest had never even heard of it until it was mentioned on this forum so many years ago. I will continue to believe it just never existed and move on from there.

Speaking of KISS, I remembered watching 'KISS Meets The Phantom of the Park' when I was a kid and liking it. A few months back I located a copy and re-watched it. Another horrifying spectacle of lameness.

it's pretty damning. they were sellouts and somehow made it cool.

netnalp - start a thread please. If you're open enough to drop a bomb like that I hope you'll be open enough to share with the ffa. Lots of folks would be interested. But if you're not up for it I'll take this no further.

The Square. An intense film de noir. Could easily fill in as a Coen brothers movie (though not one of their very best). Between this and Snowtown I'm starting to really warm up to Australian flicks.

Random tidbit: The cop in the movie (Cyril Rafaelli) is my effin' buff twin. No shtick. Everytime a friend watches the new Die Hard I hear "Dude, we just watched your movie." Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. It reads like an episode of Scooby Doo. It's Crouching Tiger type kung fu. It's cheesy. Over the top. And loads of fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG_3AJ4Adls

Red Hill is another one that came out in the last year or so. Lots of comparisons to an No Country For Old Men type film.

And of course Animal Kingdom.

Just put The Square at the top of my queue.

The commercials are far and away the best part of the experience.

Very nice! The first one for the phones was actually pretty cool. Younger people don't understand that once upon a time you didn't own the phone in your house and you couldn't just go buy one.

And that Reggie candy bar was pretty terrible.

I pretty well thought the opposite of all of this. I thought the ending was great, what did you want to happen? I thought the chase scenes were kind of cool, but that's where a lot of the dumb stuff happened imo, and I didn't like how they went forward in time like 5 seconds randomly during a car chase scene, made it hard to follow. Still, I'd give the film a 4/5 simply because it was a pretty damn cool movie throughout.

What was the purpose of the whole race car deal? Just to introduce people and show that they were players? Why in the hell would he leave $1M in a parking lot at the end? Everyone who could link him to it was dead. Could have given it to the chick. I get the strong silent type but he barely talked! What was the point of wearing the mask when he killed Perlman?

:goodposting: Terrible misleading advertising and a name that has no bearing on what the show is about. I really liked it, and the only hour long FX show I can think of not getting a 2nd season was that show with Andre Braugher Thief (which I actually thought was solid as well and Braugher won an Emmy for it), so I was very surprised a show as solid as Terriers didnt get a 2nd season. It was possibly my favorite new show last year.

My wife wanted to watch it because she thought it was going to have a lot of dogs in it. They did have Winston.

Also watched Tombstone for the millionth time. My love for this movie never fades. It's kind of big & silly, but it's got so many fun moments that it's a joy to watch. Kilmer's performance remains his best by far (though the lady I was watching with was annoyed by his exaggerated accent), Russell was believably hard-headed, and Booth's "well....bye" remains one of the most I-want-to-wipe-that-smirk-off-his-face moments I've had watching a movie. Beihn's surfer-boy lingo can be a little annoying (I like the Latin-speaking-Ringo scenes much better), but this is just a fun, fun film.
I also love him as Doc Holliday, but he was great as Jim Morrison in The Doors and in Heat so I dont think Tombstone is hands down his best performance, as well as lesser known movies such as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Wonderland, and The Salton Sea.
REAL GENIUS DOWN?
I saw it when they were showing it on Comedy Central a long time ago, and couldnt get into it, but maybe I was too young or something. I couldnt get into Raising Arizona really back then either.

Actually Im not sure if Lights Out got renewed for a 2nd season yet or not, but thats another FX show I liked a lot. I think the only FX show Ive seen that I didnt like was Testees.

Yes, the purpose of the race car deal was pretty well to introduce people and show that they were players. It also added drama to the stuff that happened at the end. He didn't take the money because then the family Brooks/Perlman were apart of would go after him. Although anyone that could immediately link him to the crimes are dead, i can't imagine it would have been difficult for to family to figure it out. And considering the money was left at Albert Brooks' meeting place, I think we can assume that the money got back to the family. If he gave it to the chick, she would have been killed imo. He barely talked cause he's a quiet dude. The way I saw it, he wore the mask just to feel like a badass, just like why he wore the blood soaked scorpion racing jacket all the time at the end, and why he kept clenching his fists while wearing the leather gloves.

Maybe your reading comprehension is broken. I was suggesting that when I was about 10-12 years old, I didnt find Raising Arizona funny, but I love it now. Im wondering if Real Genius is a similar comedy that would be over the head of a kid's sense of humor.

Just joshing. You mad, brah?

Skateland - I watched this last night. It tried to be like Dazed and Confused or Adventureland. It did not succeed. It was not particularly funny or poignant. The coming of age story was mediocre at best. I didn't care about the characters - or how they grew - at all. It was nice to look at Alice, but otherwise, the movie was not very good.
