Also watched Tombstone for the millionth time. My love for this movie never fades. It's kind of big & silly, but it's got so many fun moments that it's a joy to watch. Kilmer's performance remains his best by far (though the lady I was watching with was annoyed by his exaggerated accent), Russell was believably hard-headed, and Booth's "well....bye" remains one of the most I-want-to-wipe-that-smirk-off-his-face moments I've had watching a movie. Beihn's surfer-boy lingo can be a little annoying (I like the Latin-speaking-Ringo scenes much better), but this is just a fun, fun film.

I also love him as Doc Holliday, but he was great as Jim Morrison in The Doors and in Heat so I dont think Tombstone is hands down his best performance, as well as lesser known movies such as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Wonderland, and The Salton Sea.

I saw it when they were showing it on Comedy Central a long time ago, and couldnt get into it, but maybe I was too young or something. I couldnt get into Raising Arizona really back then either.

Maybe your sense of humor is broken.

Maybe your reading comprehension is broken. I was suggesting that when I was about 10-12 years old, I didnt find Raising Arizona funny, but I love it now. Im wondering if Real Genius is a similar comedy that would be over the head of a kid's sense of humor.

Then I'm happy and sad for you. It is very much worth revisiting.

I pretty well thought the opposite of all of this. I thought the ending was great, what did you want to happen? I thought the chase scenes were kind of cool, but that's where a lot of the dumb stuff happened imo, and I didn't like how they went forward in time like 5 seconds randomly during a car chase scene, made it hard to follow. Still, I'd give the film a 4/5 simply because it was a pretty damn cool movie throughout.

What was the purpose of the whole race car deal? Just to introduce people and show that they were players? Why in the hell would he leave $1M in a parking lot at the end? Everyone who could link him to it was dead. Could have given it to the chick. I get the strong silent type but he barely talked! What was the point of wearing the mask when he killed Perlman?

Helluva driver, but he wasn't meant to be the smartest tool in the garage.

The Square. An intense film de noir. Could easily fill in as a Coen brothers movie (though not one of their very best). Between this and Snowtown I'm starting to really warm up to Australian flicks.

Worth a watch, but nowhere near as good as I expected it to be. Too slow and the characters were all unlikeable.

One of the best American movies this year. He actually was pretty smart, despite appearances to the contrary. Obviously, deeply f'd up, but calculated and precise in his decisions and actions. Evidence being his rules, discipline, and execution when doing jobs. His composure under pressure. His handling of the guy in the elevator, and then Brooks and Perlman. And obviously, loyal to a fault. Knowing he couldn't have the girl, still trying to help her and her husband out. He wasn't dumb. Just awkward.

The race car deal was the vehicle for introducing Brooks and Nino, and showed a potential avenue for him to break out of what he was doing. Regardless, as in real life, not all elements necessarily forward the narrative. But in a good story, things like this are more than superficial decoration, they flesh out a character's world, which is essentially character development.

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly. I would even go so far as saying that I enjoyed Murray's Thompson much more than the Depp renditions despite the close relationship Hunter and Depp had. Depp seemed like he was spoofing Murray's portrayal in Fear and Loathing and he is pretty irratic in how he turns it on and off in the Rum Diary. I realize it was on his early years when it was just booze instead of all the drugs, but it plays off like a very poor uneven version of a modern noire piece.

I agree for the most part but in one brief scene where HST is looking at the carpet in the hotel F&L perfectly captured some visuals from an LSD trip that I had never been able to adequately describe to my friends.I think Trainspotting is a phenomenal drug film and, apart from Renton's O.D & forced detox (which I think was presented as a dream or a metaphor rather than a real hallucinogenic experience) there really weren't any attempts to make the viewer 'feel' the experience.

I haven't had a chance to finish it yet. But Enter the Void opens with an intense research chemical trip that it pretty much spot on from my experiences.Agree with Chaka on the carpet in Fear and Loathing, they nailed it there.

From my experiences and people I've talked with, you know you are really ####ed up when things start breaking down into basic shapes. Circles seem to be the most common one and coincide with spinning usually. Triangles 2nd.

Terry Gilliam was the guy to tackle Fear and Loathing if it had to be done, but it just doesn't work. And some of the best stuff was left out. Like the tire-inflating bit which to this day makes me laugh every time it crosses my mind. But yes, that carpet scene got a little of it across to those not familiar. Depp annoys me as HST for exactly the reason stated above...comes off as mimicry, while I loved Murray's take. Although, I think Depp''s is closer to the real thing...more tension...but Murray's was much more fun.The Trainspotting detox was really well done, though it's hard for the viewer to know what is dream and what is visual hallucination. But I he got the gist.

Its probably top 10 for me, all time.The drug scenes were all heroin or narcotic, rather than halluecenogens, so I think it was probably easier to depict. But I thought it was spot on.

Gus Van Sant may not have that great of batting average, but when he hits, its out of the park: Drugstore Cowboy, To Die For, I can re-watch anytime and thoroughly enjoy. My Own Private Idaho, Good Will Hunting, and Milk are all pretty amazing, altho they don't have the rewatchability factor.

This is a great point. From the what I've read and the documentaries I've watched, Hunter would have to have a real affinity for you for you to spend much time around him. He would go into hysterics, discharge pistols, and turn the tables on you so he was in the position of "observer".

Gus Van Sant may not have that great of batting average, but when he hits, its out of the park: Drugstore Cowboy, To Die For, I can re-watch anytime and thoroughly enjoy. My Own Private Idaho, Good Will Hunting, and Milk are all pretty amazing, altho they don't have the rewatchability factor.

It falls into your latter category, but dont forget about Elephant. I personally really liked his Psycho remake as well, although I give a lot of credit to Vince Vaughn and a great ensemble cast for that one.

I don't get the love for Elephant. It didn't delve into any of the characters enough for me to care about what happened to any of them. And some of the actions by the teachers and students was just stupid.

IDK, James Woods is the only selfish character or guy I wouldnt want to get high with in ADIP, but thats what James Woods does - make you dislike his characters in pretty much everything he's in.

The big difference for is that I'd probably enjoy getting high with the DSC characters, but the ADIP characters are too creepy to even consider. It is a solid movie, but not re-watchable for me.And good call on Elephant. I had forgotten that one. What a wonderful, strange movie.

Elephant effected me deeply. I wish more movies could the way that one did.

I thought Elephant was incredible. Surprised when people say they didn't like it.

He's good but he isn't good enough to top Cheech & Chong. Next Movie has so many layers to it, which seems intuitively impossible for a simple stoner romp, but I think people catch new things even after 10+ viewings. No way does Half Baked bring anything close to that to the table. It's a one off.

Funny thing is, I used to live in Louisville as a little kid, and still have relatives there. But even though I've always been a big fan of Thompson, I had no idea he was from KY.

I'm not very objective here, because I think the Cheech and Chong albums are so much better than their movies.

We're talking stoner comedies here. Whichever I get more laughs from is the better movie. If I need to watch Nice Dreams 10 times to sift thru the layers, youre pretty much making my point for me.mother ####er said ice cream!!!
