Live Free or Die Hard:

Wanted to see if it was still as bad as I remembered it being - and yes it was. I think I've seen a few in here say that they had fun with it, but I can't even go that far. The scene with them racing in the police car sets the tone for the rest of the stupidness to follow - first taking out a baddie via fire hydrant, then launching a car to take out a helicopter. Combine that with smart ### hacker nerds and I was having 0 fun. It wasn't Crystal Skull-level bad, but I think it was coming close.

Sharktopus: Love. Romance. Tension. Gore. Corruption. Conspiracy. Half-shark, half octopus. This movie had it all. A masterpiece on so many levels. 5/5

I can't believe someone actually spent money making these types of movies. I could poop a better movie. Couldn't fall asleep the other night and this came on.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

Revisiting some of my favorites these days.

This movie holds up very well. Rockwell is outstanding, as usual. This and Choke are my favorite Rockwell movies.

Headhunters. A fantastic Norwegian film about an executive at a headhunting agency who moonlights as an art thief. He discovers a man he's trying to recruit inherited a painting worth approximately $100 million dollars and tries to steal it before it can get authenticated. The man he's stealing from was a former special forces badass who specialized in security. Things of course don't go as planned. It's not a great movie but it is a very good one. A few things tie up too cleanly but overall this is easily one of my favorite movies on the year. I recommend skipping the trailer but if you need that little push

Don't know if it was from this recommendation or not, but it's the only one I could find in this thread. Just saw this tonight and agree with what was said here. Good movie.

Wow.. 180 degrees from me.. I loved it.. A true  flick worth every dollar I spent in the theater and then buying it..

IMO the rankings so far are Die Hard, then Live Free, then #2 and so far behind I refuse to ever watch it again, #3.

Resident Evil - Retribution: Milla Jovovich being awesome. I tried to keep track of ridiculous plot holes but had to give up after about 10 minutes. Great CGI, great action and great Milla. Perfect fit for the series. 3.5/5

Been meaning watch this, thanks for the reminder.

rewatched zulu recently, forgot how good it was... fairly accurate historically, i think...another movie about the english in africa (this time north) was khartoum, could only find on you tube, poor image, it had its moments (charlton heston and sir larry in heavy makeup), didn't like as much... not as historically accurate... though the character heston played (general gordon?) sounded interesting...cross-posted from criterion thread...seen some very good movies past few weeks...ANOTHER movie set in africa, naked prey, with largely forgotten actor/director cornel wilde - naked prey... growing up, i don't think this movie was in heavy rotation, so i'm guessing many haven't seen this... based on colter's run (reportedly also influenced by 30s horror movie most dangerous game, about a deranged host hunting "guests" lured to his island)... very stripped down with minimal dialogue, story largely told visually, beautiful shots of africa... if you like this, check out another largely forgotten effort that was one of wilde's best, beach red, an interesting war movie in some ways uncannily like malick's thin red line (partly due to ensemble voice over narration, though malick had done internal MONOlogue previously, in badlands and days of heaven, in the person/voice of sissy spacek and linda manz, respectively)... it is more dated, but for its time (mid-late 60s?), imo it was ahead of its time... though naked preys advantage of stripped down dialogue causes this to suffer in the comparison... some of the acting was laughably bad, actually... nonetheless, overall it seemed grittier and more real than comparable war films i recall from that era, and left an impression... harakiri one of best movies i've ever seen, an antisamurai movie... samurai rebellion also well done, a toshiro mifune vehicle comparable to his best work with kurosawa (both by kobayashi, his kwaidan, a collection of four ghost sories, also recommended)...a few highly recommended non-american noirs... le doulos by melville took some very unexpected twists... japanese noir youth of the beast was outstanding (starring joe shishido - he was in colt is my passport, also pretty good)... similarities to yojimbo (central plot/theme of playing two gangs off against each other remains intact, transposed from samurai to yakuza/gangster realm), but, without spoilers, kept me guessing even more... directed by seijun suzuki, who later made increasingly avant garde yakuza movies tokyo drifter and branded to kill... latter also starring shishido, and for which he was fired and blacklisted for a decade, due to being "incomprehensible" (they admittedly became increasingly bizarre :) )...

I was pleasantly surprised by it. Fun ride!

Id go Die Hard, Vengeance, Live Free, DH2.I enjoyed Live Free, but no way its better than Vengeance. Samuel L Jackson as his sidekick as opposed to Justin Long is really all that needs to be said there. Irons was also great as the villain, whereas Olyphant is pretty forgettable as the villain in Live Free. I actually just had to look up who the villain was because I was going to mention how good Irons was. Big fan of Olyphant but totally forgot he was even in it.

I think someone mentioned it recently in the Netflix threat, so FYI to others it is streaming there.

What is everyone's thoughts on Justified? 4 episodes in and I don't think I like it. Does it get better? Does is stay very episodic or does a good story line come into play?
I saw Season 1 but havent started watching the rest. IIRC, there are quite a few stand alone episodes right around where youre at, but halfway thru the season they build and focus on the Boyd Crowder storyline and it gets better. Im not a fan of episodic shows either, show while I was enjoying those episodes early on, I was waiting for a story arch and one (a few actually) come into play. To answer your question, yes, I thought it got better. I think I watched the entire season in 2 days because I got hooked once they kept building the main stories.I actually did start watching Season 2 (I think I moved so missed the last 2/3 of the season) as well and they bring in a new major story line but there is carry over from Season 1 as well. I think its definitely worth watching.

So I know I will totally get ripped for this, saw That's my boy... Yes the awful Sandler movie....

I really liked it...
I thought it had several laugh out loud moments, enough to make it decent. It's like every 3rd Sandler movie is pretty funny. We have two more to go until the next one.
I think thats giving him too much credit. I thought Thats My Boy was surprisingly quite funny, but at the same time still felt like a terrible movie. Since the turn of the century (excluding dramas and kids movies)..Little Nicky

Mr Deeds

Anger Management

50 First Dates

Longest Yard

Click

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry

Zohan

Funny People

Grown Ups

Just Go With It

Jack And Jill

Thats My Boy

I havent seen Just Go With It or Jack and Jill, but I think Id actually say Thats My Boy is the funniest of this bunch, though not as good overall as Funny People. I dont think Id say I enjoyed another from this bunch. Anger Management and Chuck & Larry were ok enough, I guess.

Wow. That puts it in perspective. All of the movies on the list that I've seen were awful. Haven't seen That's My Boy. It could be bad and still be the best of the bunch.

Dredd: A heck of a lot better than expected. If it got rid of the ####### slow-mo and the 3D jumpout scenes it would have been pretty good. 3.5/5

I tend to avoid a Kevin James movie on general principles, but based upon a friend's review decided to check out Here Comes the Boom. Pretty formulaic "underdog fighting to save ______" movie, but I really enjoyed it. It had a lot of heart and Salma Hayek. More than a couple of laugh out loud moments. Oh and it had Salma Hayek.

7/10

And Karl Urban plays Dredd pretty well. Not that he's the most dynamic character to begin with but still...
Yeah, I don't think that is one to add to the resume. Speak in a deep raspy voice and ... thats it. Probably the easiest role of his career.

Worked for Christian Bale.

Bale actually had to do a bit without the mask on. One scene of Bruce Wayne would be tougher to act than an entire movie as Dredd.

thanks, this was buried in my queue, i'll bump it up... think i may have seen it once, but if so it was a long time ago and not sure (looks like it has uniformly great reviews)... i did coincidentally see bryan brown (and brian dennehy) recently after rewatching F/X & F/X 2...

Me thinks you need your head examined. I think it's been established that you and I probably wouldn't be a good match for movie night. I guess I come at it not really loving action movies for one, but even so if it is going to be this level of stupid I would give it more of a pass if it was something on the lines of Crank. I love the 3rd Die Hard and think #1 is the best action movie ever, IMO this one was pretty far out of the spectrum of what made those movies great, so it shouldn't have the Die Hard name on it.

Paranorman - 9/10

I'm tempted to give this movie a perfect 10 but I'll have to see it again before I do.

I thought it was terrific all around. It looked great. I laughed all the way through. It had a good message. The final conflict betweent the antagonist/protagonist was great.

I think it's a crime that this didn't do better. The "gay" joke at the end is about as benign as it gets.

See this movie soon.
I took my son to see this in the theaters. Felt pretty meh to me... and he was even non-plussed too. but I did like how it worked the antagonist angle.

"King's Speech" the other night. It is just fine. Nothing remarkable about it. It's one of those UK movies that you can trust to hold up its end of the bargain. Good acting, decent writing and capable direction. They churn out these little films all the time. I watched this almost on auto-pilot.
I haven't seen it, but I've seen it.

Just rewatched Fire in the Sky for the first time in like 10 years.Love that movie, can't wait for Dark Skies, hasn't been a good movie about aliens since Fire in the Sky

The Samaritan....Samuel L Jackson plays a former grifter just released from prison after 25 years for killing his partner in crime. Once out, partner in crime's son (who Ive never seen before but thought did a great job acting here) tracks him down and wants to be shown the ropes and do a job as payback for killing his father. I wont get into much more than that because I dont want to give anything away. I was very tempted to turn this off after a half hour or so (and I almost never consider that) as it was seemingly going nowhere in the storyline and even SLJ wasnt keeping it interesting, but about 45 minutes in there's a big reveal that grabs you and I thought it was quite good from that point on. What began feeling like a boring, depressing film about difficulties in life ended up becoming a pretty good neo noir drama about second chances. Script was good, acting was very good all around, and SLJ actually impresses as the executive producer. In retrospect much of what was done in the first half of the film was necessary for it to have the emotional impact that is believable to the viewer over the latter half of it....3.5/5

An American CrimeI like Ellen Page as an actress but the torture scenes were cringe-worthy. Not sure I'd recommend this film if you're not into depressing films.3/5

I went into this with little knowledge of the movie. I'd seen a trailer months ago, but that was forgotten.

I have to say that this is yet another solid Tom Cruise thriller.

Very well done.

Just rewatched Fire in the Sky for the first time in like 10 years.

Love that movie, can't wait for Dark Skies, hasn't been a good movie about aliens since Fire in the Sky
Never seen this but there's certainly been good alien movies in the last 20 years
I don't know man, I'm a pretty big sci-fi nerd and aliens aren't exactly my favorite genre but I watch pretty much any new sci-fi movie that comes out.Just to be clear I was referring to the stereotypical grey skin x-file aliens. Any come to mind?

Either way, you should check out Fire in the Sky I read the book when I was a kid and also saw the movie when I was very young (8 or 9 maybe) it scared the hell out of me then but it also piqued my interest in science fiction.

The Perks of Being a WallflowerI'm a little torn on this movie...on one hand I really enjoyed it for the acting and writing, but on the other I had a tough time believing these were high school students. Also, it was meant to take place in the 80's but the people in it didn't look like they were from the 80's at all. Some parts, like bullying kids, were cliche. Despite all this, I'm still going to give it 8/10 and in a weak year for movies it's probably going to be in my top 10.
Emma Watson was fantastic in this movie.
It's in my top 10. Didn't want it to end. Just wanted to keep following the kid. Great performances across the board especially Ezra Miller who played the friend Patrick. His performance was a little over the top but incredibly charismatic for a such a young actor.I agree it was a bit of a stretch that these were high school students but willing to forgive that considering how absorbed I was in this one.Might have to go check the book out.8/10

An American CrimeI like Ellen Page as an actress but the torture scenes were cringe-worthy. Not sure I'd recommend this film if you're not into depressing films.3/5
The fact that this was based on a true story (IIRC) made this a little disturbing, but I thought it was good. And while I guess you would call what was done to her "torture", it was deprivation torture and not physical or violent torture (again IIRC). I thought Page and Catherine Keener were both real good in this. Had a bit of a made-for-TV movie feel to it but I thought it was worth the watch.

I guess if youre sticking to that, not many. I guess Independence Day fits that, which I still love, and I might be the only person who enjoyed Dreamcatcher but cant think of any more. Im sure there's at least a handful more.

Yeah, it was better adaptation than The Girl Next Door.

rewatched singing in the rain with my wife on valentines day... saw it on blu ray, i think restoration done last year... definitely one of the best LOOKING movies i've ever seen, and among best use of technicolor... the artist could almost have been a remake of this movie... plot-wise, that is, though (virtually) silent and shot in B & W, i think... just got blu rays of lawrence of arabia and bridge over the river kwai (both david lean epics, each won seven oscars)... former restoration just released in nov, both also look pretty amazing...* looking forward to seeing blu ray restoration of citizen kane soon...

I don't really think Independence Day aliens are the kind im talking about (I sound like an alien hipster right now :bag: ).I mean like the aliens from Fourth Kind, Signs or that terrible movie with Charlie Sheen that got 2 sequels somehow. I don't even consider contact or mission to mars in with them, the aliens in those aren't nefarious. That being said, I like the other genre more, the Thing is one of my favorite movies of all time and I love the Abyss.

I liked the ensemble of buddies (Thomas Jane, Timothy Olyphant, Jason Lee, Damian Lewis) so thats the main reason it worked for me since I enjoy all those actors. The worm creature was kind of cool but the sci-fi aspect of that movie was pretty bad.

I hate you guys right now. I saw this thread earlier and went out and rented this movie. I'm so pissed that this did happen. I know it was 40 years ago now but the only thing that could have me more pissed off is if she was found "not guilty". UGH!!Just saw the Wiki of "The Girl Next Door". Is that movie "better" or is it worth a watch or what?

Liked Win Win quite a bit. Giamatti is just always good. Amy Ryan too. Loved the way the kid played his role. and Burt Young! Solid movie. 3/5

I'm a biased Woody Allen fan but To Rome With Love was genius. I'm a sucker for all things Italy, especially Rome, so that also plays a part. Just a great multi-story film. It's worth it just for Penelope Cruz (she really is a goddess)and all the other hot women speaking Italian. 4/5

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes - always my second favorite after the original. Still holds up. Thanks for the marathon AMC!
