Under the Skin is a pretty crazy movie. 3/5

I love Scarlett even more now.

I really get the polar opposite reviews of this one. It is what I felt all the way through this.

I liked a lot of the struggles of the characters and Aronofsky's take on the story of Noah. Thought the 1st 1/2 of the film was far better than the second. Thought the CGI was bad, and the rock angels were ####in' horrible. If this is him unhinged and able to make what he wants with basically unlimited budget, I think he needs to go back to being reigned in more. I think that a 5/10 is being generous, and it is mostly based on Aronofsky at least trying to reach for something epic. Easily his worst film.

I'm a big Aronofsky fan, but I am not looking forward to seeing this.

Karma, are you religious? Because it does not portray god or noah in a very good light so I think that's where at least some of the major complaints come from, though it has plenty of other faults as well.

I think The Fountain is Aronofsky unhinged and able to make whatever he wants with a huge budget. I loved that movie, but I seem to be mostly alone on that front.

so don't watch it

KP, I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to Noah, I thought it was okay but that's about it. It was interesting to watch Noah the man go to that dark place but it felt like Aronofsky couldn't decide which direction to take the movie. On one side is the attempt to tell the human story in a gritty and serious manner but then he mixes in fantastical elements that seem out of place with that attempt.

Methuselah in particular came across as the Eleven King of the mountain rather than a real historical man from the bible. Kept waiting for him to ask for Frodo. And the rock angels were silly, imo. I couldn't take the movie serious after that.
Even with my complaints I thought the last 20 mins. or so were very compelling, just wish that tone had carried on throughout the film.

I was the same - don't worry, you'll like it.

I take it you're religious?

caught the new woody allen last night, "magic in the moonlight". i would give it a C+ maybe. it felt like woody was working out some ideas but they didn't come together well enough. lots of navel-gazing, which he has done very well in his time, but not so much here. great leads with Colin Firth and Emma Stone but they're both not right for this. they have ZERO chemistry together and while she might be game for this kind of role, she wasn't clicking here. a shame really.

I don't normally watch movies more than once but I feel like I should watch this again. Thinking a lot about it today, reading reviews, etc.
I just finished watching it. Mixed feelings. Probably would not pay to see it knowing what I know now. Seeing SJ naked is probably worth the 6 bucks I paid though. No real plot to this movie.

Not in the slightest.

I think the Old Testament doesn't portray God in a very good light. One of the things that I liked about the movie was it's portrayal of Noah. Very flawed and has him go to some dark places.

Too many other negatives for me and ended up outweighing the few positives. I know I have 0 patience for CGI, but I thought the angels were horrible, and Iike Dutch said, I had trouble taking anything in the movie seriously after that. Wasn't prepared for how much they were in the movie. Didn't like many of the character actions or plots and really didn't like Hermione's lecture at the end for whatever reason.

I really liked the Fountain. It was supposed to have a 70M + budget, but I think it got trimmed down to 30M. Love all his movies except this one.

The whole idea of the flood is unbelievable so if you can suspend disbelief for that then why not everything else?

Nope. It's not the believability of those creatures or their story (actually thought that backstory was kinda cool), I just thought they looked like crap and were kinda silly. Just think Aronofsky is at his best on a small scale dealing with the dark side of humans, and his movies usually don't have that many characters. I think The Wrestler, Requiem, and Black Swan are fantastic. The Fountain I really liked as well, but that was still dealing with individuals. Noah worked best for me on that level, but starting breaking down once it became 'bigger' for lack of any better descriptor.

Enemy

Fantastically enigmatic film that keeps you guessing throughout. And unlike some enigmatic films I'm pretty sure this one has an answer. Any fans of films that make you think should definitely check this out.

5/5.

Bad Words comes available on Red Box next week. I had wanted to see it in the theatre but just missed it.

I'm looking forward to seeing it.

In the mainstream category, I saw the new Planet of the Apes last weekend... in 3D! The 3D is an afterthought in this movies. I didn't get in the way but it added nothing. The movie is well done. Amazing effects and a well done, if predictable, story. As with the first, one there are tons of holes and things that don't make a lot of sense, but it's a movie about talking apes so you gotta roll with it.

Not everything worked. But this movie was more ambitious than some summer fare, and I liked it.

Wife picked it out cause she thought I would like it or something.

"Under the Skin"

Worst damn movie I ever seen. Gotta be a pretty bad movie when SJ is naked and it is still absolutely atrocious.

Watch the movie and skip her nude scene. If you still like the movie at all, something is wrong with you.

Hell, even if you like it WITH the nude scene something is wrong with you......... :nerd: :nerd: :nerd: :nerd: :nerd:

I'm gonna put this in here, saw it on Netflix.

Generation War

Is a foreign film (German), so there are subtitles which doesn't really bother me if the film is good. This one exceeded any expectations that I had by a ton. It's a 3 part mini-series, each one the normal length of any movie (hour and a half or so). The acting, action, setting, filming, everything is top-notch.

4.5/5

"World's End" with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and company.

Mildly amusing but little else. Interesting enough premise but mostly squandered. I felt like the writing was weak and thinly plotted for an already pretty spare one. Still, there were laughs to be had and the soundtrack was a gem from like 1992-3. Probably the least effective of the trilogy with Shaun>Fuzz>World's End.
Thought I'd pass this on - the complete Spaced series is $20 on Amazon.

Two Charlie Chaplin movies:

Modern Times - 7.5/10

The Great Dictator - 8/10

You can see in the latter where Mel Brooks got his influence. It wanders in spots, but considering the personal risk that Chaplin took to make it I really appreciated the movie.

Her - 7/10

It was just okay. It was like Gattaca met Lost In Translation.

Divergent - Ugh, maybe a C-. Interesting concept and Kate Winslet is very good as the villian Shailene Woodley is an OK actress, but she is not convincing in this role. She is just way too frail. Ashley Judd in two minutes screen time is way more bad ### than Shailene. And she looks like she is 16 and her love interest looks about 38. It is kinda creepy.

And I see there are 3 more movies in this series...Ugh

3 more in the series. I HOPE they are doing that thing I love and splitting the last one up into 2 parts. Nothing screams money grab like that.

Watched two recently:

Under the Skin - I liked it. It wasn't great. Yes, there's not a whole lot of plot. Yes, it doesn't tidy everything up for you with a neat red bow. But, I thought it was interesting visually (and not just SJ's body), and I like films that make you think, anyway. Not for everyone, but I liked it. (3/5)

The Zero Theorem - I recently read that this is Part III of Gilliam's "Orwellian triptych" along with Brazil and 12 Monkeys. As a result, it's impossible for me to not compare the film to those other two predecessors. 12 Monkeys is in my Top 10 all time, and is pretty much perfect, IMO. He'll be hard pressed to ever do anything that tops that one. Brazil is an interesting case, because truth be told, I'm not really a fan of Jonathan Price in that role. However, I still love the film. There's just something about it that makes me want to watch it over and over. This one is my least favorite of the three. It's beautiful visually. But, I just didn't feel any connection to any of the characters. Even Christoph Waltz, who is such a fine actor, didn't do it for me in this role. Hot french chick who is constantly in thigh highs? Check, but not really interested in her character. It just felt like it could have been so much better. Glad I saw it. Won't ever watch it again. Glad I didn't pay $20 to see it. (2/5)
