Not great. Entertaining. I've definitely seen enough torture scenes in film to last me a lifetime. Crowe and DiCaprio are solid, as usual.
I find it hypocritical that DiCaprio's character blasts Muslim extremism in one scene and then says that America doesn't understand the Middle East in the following scene. So which is it? Is the movie beating the drum for America or is it decrying America's ignorance of the Middle East? Body of Lies conveniently tries both. I know the movie is mostly just a popcorn flick, but since it injects some heavy-handed moralism, that deserves critique.

Punisher War Zone: Solid action flick. Completely over the top and ridiculous but still good. Far better than junk like Transporter 3, Bangkok Dangerous or Eagle Eye. 4/5

L'Interieur (Inside): The French film about a pregnant woman who gets stalked in her own house by a crazy woman. Blood, gore, and more blood and gore. The copy I got was dubbed in German, with English subtitles, so I think the fact that I wasnt hearing the actual actors voices took something away from it. Im fine with subtitles, but having to hear German was a bit distracting. I think if I had the French audio it would have been better. Overall I understand how this movie shocks people, and it is brutal, but I think I expected more after reading the hype surrounding this movie. The gore was well done aside form some continuity issues. 7/10

Finally, someone else has seen this movie. As a fan of the comics, I absolutely loved it. 5/5 and easily the best action movie released last year.

watched "bloody sunday" with the wife last night. documentary "you are there" style re-telling of the 1972 march in derry in northern ireland. during a peace march, 27 people were injured - 14 of them fatally wounded - when they were shot at by the british military. the british denied any wrongdoing, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. good, sometimes powerful film.

Australia - 7/10
Not terrible at all. It's not my kind of movie, but my wife liked it.
Wasn't as grand in scope as I thought it would be. I thought it would show more about Australia the country, but the story was sufficient.

Interesting concept. Perfunctory execution. Serial killer (Kevin Costner) is discovered by wierdo voyeur (Dane Cook). I rip his terrible stand-up routine, but Cook is fine in this movie. My beef is with Costner. If you watch the work of a great actor, each new effort re-enforces his/her excellence. But with Costner, every movie I see with him tells me he is a very mediocre actor.

Watched a bunch of movies last weekend...
Appaloosa - B+ - Good enough western flick. There were just enough intricacies in the plot to make it a little different then most westerns. The bad news is that Ed Harris's character makes no sense. I suppose the fact he kept going back to his worthless girlfriend was supposed to show that he had a heart after all, but by the end of the movie he looked like quite a sissy compared to how he started the movie.
Eastern Promises - B minus - No idea what to make of this movie. It seemed like a Law and Order episode taken to the big-screen, if that makes any sense. Pretty straightforward plot, and nicely filmed. But every time there was a chance at a climax of action and drama, they just revealed the answer outright. Not a complete waste of time, but I'm not sure I'd recommend this movie.
Body of Lies - A minus - thought this was really good. Very tense. While you've got to think that a station chief for the CIA wouldn't get roped in to trading himself for a girl, the rest of it was really well done. I'm a little surprised this movie came and went at the theaters as I thought it was pretty good and different from a lot of other stuff out both then and now.
Max Payne - F - awful movie. Awful. There was nothing redeemable about it. They introduced characters just to later say, "just kidding! they aren't part of the story at all!" including the main antagonist. Awful.
Bangkok Dangerous - B - Entertaining enough assassin story, but the ending was predictable and thus boring. But the first hour is pretty solid.
The Crow III - A minus - Ed Furlong, Tara Reid, some other people you've seen before... absolutely awful in a delightful way. The acting is terrible, the costumes and sets look like they were made by a HS theater club, the plot is stupid, the premise is ridiculous, on and on. The best part of the movie is when Eddie Furlong uses a marker to paint his face up like the Crow. Just awful. You'll love it.
Revenge - D - I own this Kevin Costner movie for some reason on VHS and popped it in when I had no other movies to watch. I remembered thinking it was pretty bad when I watched it once before, but I figured my tastes had developed and I might like it this time around. Good grief this is a bad movie. It has a lot of poorly filmed scenes, bad acting, awful story (Costner suddenly starts trusting everyone he runs in to despite the fact that a host of very powerful people have been interested in killing him for a while?). Gets a D b/c it wasn't as bad as Max Payne.

Something really weird happened to me last night; I watched a superhero movie and thought it was brilliantly done 
I remember watching the first Superman movie as a kid and quite liking it. I would avoid it at all costs now. I thought that Jack Nicholson's Joker was worth a look, despite how deliberately over the top it was. I was mildly curious about Spiderman, but thought that it started out ok and quickly deteriorated.
Yesterday, I was looking for two blu-ray's at Blockbuster in their 2 for $30 deal. I found one I wanted but couldn't find a second. In the end, I bowed to the hype and chose The Dark Knight. I expected a movie full of special effects and gadgets, with a setting so dark that it would be difficult to even make out what was happening. I didn't think Heath Ledger's performance would be anything special because of the genre.
I was wrong.
The Dark Knight is a wonderful movie. It's full of good actors for a start. Unlike most superhero movies, this appears to be set in the real world. Yes, the special effects and explosions are there in abundance, but the movie is so much more. I am a Christopher Nolan fan and love Memento. He does a great job with this. Ledger's Joker seems genuinely frightening rather than campy nonsense. He and Batman both have reasons for the things that they do. It felt more like a crime drama at times.
Not only did I enjoy watching this movie, but I want to watch it again. While the genre isn't taken that seriously - especially by me - I can see why Ledger got his Oscar. The Dark Knight has changed how I think about comic book movies. If done well, it can actually be worth watching.
The story doesn't have as much depth as dramas like The Shawshank Redemption, but it is head and shoulders above anything else I have seen in the superhero genre.
8.5/10 as a movie - 10/10 for the genre.

The Groomsmen. Caught it on Starz a few weeks ago. Lots of names, but missed it when it came out. Was pleasantly surprised. Really enjoyed this flick. My ability to relate to this movie made it that much better. Worth a viewing.

Martyrs: HOLY. CRAP. THIS. MOVIE. IS. INSANE!!!!! The French just keep pushing the envelope in the hardcore horror/gorror genre. This movie is extremely brutal, shocking, graphic, sick, and just plain balls to the walls. One of the best horror movies Ive ever seen, and one of the toughest to watch.
I wont go into plot or story too much as I dont want to give any spoilers away. The first half is a grisly revenge story on a family who may or may not have been responsible for the kidnapping and torture of a young girl 15 years previously. The 2nd half the film gets turned upside down and goes in a completely different direction as it pummels the audience and takes them on a visceral ride of torture, pain, suffering, and the limits of human endurance. Again, it is not easy to watch. I watched this with 2 other people, and I could feel the tension in the room like Ive never felt while watching a movie. One friend kept having to look away, and the other kept covering her mouth to silence her gasps. This movie delivers the goods!!!
One thing that sets it apart from other torture/gore/horror movies is revealed near the end of the film, where we discover that there is a reason for every bit of the characters' pain and suffering, which is a nice change from the usual "kill just for the sake of killing" that takes place in alot of films in this genre (such as Hostel). Its an interesting and thought provoking reveal.
Martyrs has a well written story, surprisingly good acting, great visual effects, and a haunting score. It is an all out assault of the senses. You will not feel good after watching this, if you can make it all the way through. It's unlike anything you've ever seen, and you're unlikely to forget it anytime soon. Not for the feint of heart, the squeamish, or for those with a full stomach. It is absolutely relentless, disturbing, violent, and intense.
You have been warned.

Im on a foreign film kick lately (mostly horror), and I gotta say, theres a lot of REALLY GOOD stuff out there that blows anything Hollywood has to offer right out of the water.

The Germans all surrender because none of them want to be killed.Ryan is in the fetal position because the mayhem around him is so intense that he simply loses it. I haven't watched the movie in a few years, but it was one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen. In your first question, I recall that there was some other reason they dropped their weapons such as others were there to help but he wasn't aware of it (I could be 100% wrong here). They also might have felt that one of them would be the one who dies so why risk it? As for the crying part, I think it just shows that the emotional drain could come on at any time and you just get overcome by it (regardless of how strong or weak you were before)awesomeness said:

Marley & Me: I thought it was pretty good, but maybe a tad bit long. A real tear-jerker. Aniston and Wilson are both good in this. Recommend to any animal lover and especially to anyone who has had to have a pet put to sleep. Have a hanky handy. 8/10
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People: Simon Pegg, Kirsten Dunst and Megan Fox. This ended up being not too bad...it got better and actually funny the 2nd half of the movie. Was surprised to see Gillian Anderson, I had no idea shes been up to anything lately. Not must see but if theres nothing else on its not a bad way to kill some time. Did I mention it has Megan Fox? 6/10
: Another excellent French horror film. Basically a French version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre with some Hostel thrown in for good measure. Its got style, good performances, and lots of suspense, tension and gore. And of course its got its share of disturbing scenes. Although it starts a bit slow, once it gets going it gets going BIG TIME. Theres some plot holes here and there but its not supposed to be perfect - just entertaining and brutal, and that it exactly what it is. Im really starting to love French horror movies. 8/10

watched this tonight with the wife. i found it kind of interesting. it takes a little getting used too - plotwise, at least - but it settles in before too long. i like the rotoscoping, especially in the context of this film. this is some of linklater's most thoughtful work and reminded me of cronenberg's "naked lunch"...

i thought bryan cox's initial turn at lecter was far less hollywood & over the top than anthony hopkins, & far more sinister & terrifying for being implied ("just ZIP right down that rolodex")...maybe dennis farina's best work...
that pesky reporter freddie lounz (sp?) ends up in the hot seat...
the francis dolarhyde character is great casting (i think same actor as the axe throwing villain in the brutally bad last action hero schwarzneggar trainwreck... arnie should have checked himself before he wrecked himself)...

Watch it with subtitles. If its dubbed you cant get a feel for the great performances by both kids, and you dont get the right emotion the actors put into it. Its definitely a slower paced movie, but its driven more by characters than story, IMO, and those 2 kids make the movie what it is. I couldnt imagine watching it in anything other than the original language.

I consider the Hostels torture horror, and Martyrs has some of that in it, but its done in a completely different way. While the Hostels are strictly torture from start to finish, Martyrs' first hour is more of a revenge/horror movie with scary moments, violence, gore, and freaky stuff. The last 30 or so minutes reminded me of Hostel only because a lot of it takes place in a torture chamber. If you liked Hostel(s), you will probably like this movie, but its not the French version of Hostel by any means.

SPOILER ALERT!!!the basic, overarching plot was done far more concisely in the (original) outer limits episode architects of fear with robert culp (though his best OL was in the harlan ellison scripted demon with a glass hand), which was acknowledged late in the graphic novel by author alan moore...
while on the subject, though outer limits isn't a movie, it is avail from netflix... if twilight zone was some of the most literate TV ever, the first season of outer limits (got a bit too monster of the week ala kolchak the night stalker at the end) was some of the best sci fi on TV ever, & ahead of its time...
episodes like the man who was never born, corpus earthling, nightmare, don't open till doomsday, the invisibles, the guests & fun & games, despite the b movie low budget special effects, in terms of mood & atmosphere haven't dated, still get under your skin & are genuinely haunting & creepy...
a young, maybe circa boo radley robert duvall was in two of the best... the chamelon & the inheritors two parter (i think the only one in the series)...
highly recommended, & if you've seen them but not for a LONG time, they hold up well...

What's eating Gilbert Grape? Solid movie, sad as hell though. The woman who played Momma is actually still alive, which is insane considering she weighed almost 600 pounds at the time of filming.
The Kite Runner Another one of those in the "make you cry" collection. Sad story about Afghan kids dealing with social class issues and the USSR invasion.

I loved the soundtrack to Manhunter. 
... but yeah, it's a bit ... ahem... dated at this point. (some great Shriekback songs at key moments).I loved both performances as Lecter, but preferred the High Museum/Prison of Manhunter vs the "dungeon" in SOL.
Even though this is more the Mann of Miami Vice (music and styling)- I still think it holds up incredibly well as a movie and is one I'll always recommend to people looking for rental suggestions.

I like Hopkins just as much - but I see where you are coming from. The Dolarhyde character is excellent. A solid portrayal of a sociopath.
