I watched The Changeling on a plane, thinking it might not be awful. I was wrong. :goodposting: Christ.
yeah, i could only stomach a few minutes of it on my flight. to give you any indication of how bad i thought it was, i watched more of tyler perry's "the family that preys together" than jolie's flick.

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People: Simon Pegg, Kirsten Dunst and Megan Fox. This ended up being not too bad...it got better and actually funny the 2nd half of the movie. Was surprised to see Gillian Anderson, I had no idea shes been up to anything lately. Not must see but if theres nothing else on its not a bad way to kill some time. Did I mention it has Megan Fox? 6/10
:lmao:

I've seen a lot of love for Let the Right One In but you won't get it from me. Probably should have watched with sub-titles because the overdubs were really bad.I wound up fast forwarding through much of the movie. It had a creepy vibe but just dragged to much. 2/5
Watch it with subtitles. If its dubbed you cant get a feel for the great performances by both kids, and you dont get the right emotion the actors put into it. Its definitely a slower paced movie, but its driven more by characters than story, IMO, and those 2 kids make the movie what it is. I couldnt imagine watching it in anything other than the original language.
NEVER watch a dubbed movie. I thought it was a great movie, but not quite as good as the reviews lead you to expect.

what? i was trying to understand why tyler perry was popular. i still don't have a good answer other than "most people have terrible taste"....

As I mentioned when I gushed over it, it's definitely not one you can recommend to everyone. I was eating dinner last night with my gf's friend's family. Some camoflauge and big belt buckles were present. The subject went to movies, and my gf turns to me and says "What's that one we watched recently with the vampire?" I said "Baby. I am not about to recommend a slow moving foreign movie about a 12 year old vampire in present company." Then it clicked and she said, "Good point."

Yeah. My brother in law's a smart guy, but he constantly recommends movies to the wrong people. Like he told his mom she'd love Sexy Beast. She would hate that movie.

I Love You Man - Better than i thought. I laughed out loud more than a few times. Paul Rudd is a pretty underrated actor, and i thank god that Seth Rogen didnt play his buddy in the movie. 8/10

 Don't know how people can do it. To me subtitles are 10x better than crappy dubbed over movies. Makes it look and sound cheesy.

I also watched this movie and agree. Good movie, but not great. Still would recommend it to the foreign movie crowd on this thread.

Really? I'm surprised. I haven't seen it yet, but Clint Eastwood usually cranks out decent movies.
Just watched this tonight. The problem seems that the film just takes to long to come together. Some of the scenes are just so drawn out, I was happy to be able to fast forward to keep the movie moving. But I can see why Jolie got the academy considerations.

Pride and Glory To sum it up, disappointing. I have to admit that I am a big fan of police movies - actions or drama's. And this one missed the mark for me. I didn't enjoy Voight's performance at all. And the story line was less then enjoyable, and unbelievable at times. In premise it should have been a good movie, but I think they skipped over a lot of important parts forcing the audience to make connections and assumptions that would have been better if they were shown on screen. To me, doing so caused the movie to seem overly fake. Granted that's what most movies are, but this one really made that evident to me. I didn't understand the need/role of the wife of the oldest brother either... just seemed to be thrown in for no reason. I give it a 2 out of 5.

Death Race If you are looking for a move which requires no thinking, vehicles, and some good crashes, then this is the movie for you. I must have been in the perfect mind to watch this movie as it was enjoyable for me at the time. Hard to recommend though, as it really is completely mindless. Not even sure what I would rate this at...

Hmmmmm. I'd still give the movie a shot for free on HBO.

There is a bit of a bruhaha over the US version of the subtitles for this movie (discussed here):
I personally decided to host a screening of the DVD with a handful of friends that had yet to experience LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. (Mind you, I'd already had an advance early screener copy of the movie for months and had seen it twice during it's limited theatrical run, so it's safe to say that I knew the film rather intimately. We were all excited to watch a top quality DVD version though in the comfort of my own home.)

About 20 minutes into the screening, I was absolutely horrified.

The subtitles had been drastically changed since the last time I saw it, and dare I say... had been completely dumbed down? Sure, the basic gist of what the characters were saying was kind of there, but missing completely was the dark humor, subtleties and character nuances which made the movie so powerful and a favorite amongst audiences last year. I tried to carry on and ignore it, hoping that only a few of the translations were off... but... I was wrong. Just about the intent of every single line of dialogue was completely off and ruined the movie.

It became so frustrating, that I stopped the US DVD, got my original screener copy & we continued by watching that version instead. I realize now that sadly for everyone else out there, they don't have this option.
I reviewed this article and it seemed to me the author was getting upset over nothing, but a google search will find several discussions in which it appears to me that the consensus is moral outrage over the "dumbed-down" subtitles. Some even suggest that (if you don't know Swedish and can't get a copy of the original subtitles), the dubbed version is acutally better. Also, Magnet is apparently re-releasing a version with the allegedly superior theatrical subtitles.

 No issues with Jolie's performance, but you're spot-on about some scenes being way too long, and the all the melodrama just about killed me.

that's my big beef with eastwood's body of work as a director. he's got a nasty habit of making too much...

Now that I think about it, I had problems with Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. So I take back what I said about Clint's achievements in the field of excellence.

I'd suggest "Let the Right One In"...dubbed or dumbed down subtitles over "Twilight"...my God that's a load of BS. I realize it was written for girls but damn...it's a horrid pile of putrid stupidness. The faults I have with this film are far too many to list...case in point, I had 31 points of contention in the Dark Knight discussion thread after some were considering it a perfect film...so you can imagine my outrage towards this nonsensical farce.

Ledger is just incredible in DK. But Bale's constant Batman hiss alone makes that movie flawed.

australia - one of those movies i watched because my wife wanted to, but ended up liking it a lot (perhaps a recurring theme on the thread?)... i thought the positives definitely outweighed the negatives on this one... i like how the aboriginines played a prominent role... not just their speech, but seemingly their ethos & life view is very poetic... that opinion not just derived from this movie :goodposting: , but it was a reminder...

body of lies - not terrible... i guess i had higher expectations based on director & cast... some of the characterizations & dialogue (which i take it was based on a novel) seemed a bit overly facile, & cardboard cutout... giving credit where it is due, there were some twists that kept me guessing...

pinnochio - i think i saw this when i was a kid, but some may never have seen it (OOP for a while)... pretty much forgot everything aside from the nose-growing scene, so it was like watching it for first time... it is a great family movie, but i think adults could appreciate it that are interested in animation... one critic talked about how disney's best work had a coloring, & use of light & shadow that was "rembrandt-like"... i would put pinnochio at the apex of that period... imo, the first animated movies they did (snow white, pinnochio & fantasia... & to a lesser extent, bambi & dumbo) are the best things they ever did... disney, a notorious & legendary detail-oriented perfectionist, never again really had as much time or the inclination to carry out his brand of quality control to such obssessive levels (the palpable & tangible results which are literally evident & manifest in each shot... while a cliche, it is no less true in this instance, almost each frame is a work of art & a masterpiece)... the WW II years intervened, later the theme park & TV show preoccupied him, live action & nature documentary divisions, & towards the end of his life, his vision of the epcot city of the future...

pinnochio may well be the summitt of even the above group, & imo, IS the best of the best... not just the animation was masterful (it is), but almost everything about it... the way the story was adapted from the italian children's serial, the narrative, voice casting, the songs, the score, effects, pacing, etc...

bears repeat viewings well... needless to say, very highly recommended...

it just came out on blu-ray (studios second offering on the hi-def format, after sleeping beauty last oct)... coincidentally, snow white is next title due, in oct, & fantasia in march of 2010... along with a highly anticipated short collaboration of disney & dali called destino (plus a feature length doc on the disney that never was... i think abandoned projects like destino... this sounds intriguing, as there was probably some stuff they DIDN'T do that was as interesting or more so than what they did)...

BTW, the blu-ray comes with a standard DVD, potentially a good option for those who don't have a blu-ray player yet but think they might take the plunge in the near future... also, it comes with a nice making of documentary, not quite feature length in itself, but nearly an hour...

* to me, it is astounding how far the disney studio went in a mere decade or so... some of their first popular shorts from the early to mid-30s, are still watchable & have their charm (the sight gags were endlessly inventive, very funny & hold up), but the animation itself was primitive compared with what was soon to follow... the transformation to the state of the art just a few short years later (i think pinnochio was made in early 40s?) is staggering & mind boggling...

Finally got around to watching half of Burn After Reading before I turned it off. I normally like the Coen brothers stuff, but I wasn't entertained at any moment in the first half. This may only be the second or third time ever that a movie was so unwatchable that I didn't bother finishing watching it.
Really? Wow. I loved this movie. Heading to rent a few movies. Hoping to find something in this thread, but my god, it sounds like a bunch of garbage out there. And did I really....REALLY...see somebody give a favorable review to Marley and Me?

I can't recommend highly enough Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 93% and currently available from Netflix.

This is a powerful documentary about a likable guy who gets mixed up with a woman who's a few cards short of a full deck. I'm sure many of us can relate.

Please check this out.
This was an excellent documentary and very brutal...you aren't human if you watch this movie and never tear up.
the story itself was sad/shocking/heartbreaking/etc. would have been just as powerful as a 60 Minutes piece. i did have a bit of a problem with the film though. what bothered me was the director/narrator was a friend of the subject of the documentary and an aspiring (obviously) filmaker, and the whole thing had the feel to me of him using that as a springboard to his own fame, which didn't sit well with me. for a documentary subject matter that serious, and knowing that it's one of his best friends who is making it, i could do without all his clever direction and cuts and edits. it gave it an air of disingenuity. this isn't a documentary that he should be attempting to turn into a masterpiece of cinema, especially considering his relationship to the victim.
I hear what you are saying but that didn't bother me so much since it turned out to be a fabulous documentary.
I watched this last night right before going to bed, and needless to say I couldn't sleep after that. Before watching this, there was one documentary I had seen (Silverlake Life: The View from Here) that was so wrenching that, even though it was a good film, I had a hard time recommending to anyone that they see it. Make that two. If you want to have your heart ripped out, watch this movie. I thought I knew what it was about, and thought I was watching a somewhat routine "miscarriage of justice" movie about the murder of a great guy and the reaction of his even more amazing parents. I was not prepared for the way events unfolded. I still feel sick even as I type this.

As to the movie itself, the filmmaking was a bit amateurish, but that can be forgiven because of the power and emotion of the story. I didn't have the reaction that kd1 did--in fact I felt like the filmmaker was doing it as an act of love and a brutal scream of pain. But that's simply my read of it.

4.5/5 A must-see if you can stand it.
Off to find this at Blockbuster. Faith in the FFA restored. Thank you.

Boy A: "Based on the award winning novel of the same name by Jonathan Trigell, Jack (Andrew Garfield) is released from prison at the age of 24, having been institutionalized for most of his life after he and another boy murdered a child, when they were themselves children. The film follows Jack's difficult attempts to readjust to the world outside of confinement and restart a life which never really got going." --- I really liked this movie. Andrew Garfield turns in a great performance as Jack. Interesting story and style. 7.5/10

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas: "Set during World War II, a story seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences" -- I highly recommend this one. Fascinating movie, with an ending you will never forget. 8/10

Just saw 2:Body Of Lies

A little confusing but lots of action. Liked it.

Dan In real Life

A chick flick that was predictable but likable.

taking of pelham 1-2-3... about subway hi-jack... you can see the influence on tarantino's reservoir dogs... walter matthau was great in it...
Just watched this last night. I had never heard of the movie before other than the fact that I liked the soundtrack, which is why I rented it. One of the all-time best endings ever. The look Matthau gave him as he poked his head back in the door was :goodposting: .

Last House on the Left

In the theater on Sat night. Decent for what it is. But holy poop monkies, that one scene was wayyyy too long.

That removed, it was enjoyable enough. 3/5

Pan's Labyrinth

Subtitles were definitely too quick for me to read at times. The storytelling was very good and the cinematography/special effects fantastic. 4.5/5 with small deduction for subtitles being poorly timed. Note: this movie has some serious violence in it, don't come in expecting a kids movie.

The Prestige

Better the second time around, I think this is now in my top 20 movies. Solid acting all around, even if the ending is a bit ham-fisted in revealing its secrets (ie - you are spoon-fed the secrets at the end, instead of leaving it more subtle which would have been better).

going to watch The Illusionist tonight to compare, also bought Sunshine on sale after getting great reviews.

eta: The Illusionist was pretty disappointing. Doesn't hold a candle to The Prestige, though the movie itself was entertaining. I don't really like the setup to the ending. 3/5.

watched "P.S" lat night. Laura Linney, Topher Grace, Gabriel Byrne, Paul Rudd and Marcia gay Harden all round out the cast of this kind of "dram-edy". Linney and Grace are the leads in a metaphysical romance meets mid life crisis tale. Grace is fantastic and Linney, as always, is very good. Liked it well enough.

Somehow this wasn't even on my radar, but that is a great cast. Topher Grace is a shockingly good actor--never watched That 70s Show but he was terrific in whatever the movie was with Dennis Quaid--argh, I'm not going to look it up.My movie-viewing has been sadly limited by travel, but I caught a few on the plane rides back from Europe over the weekend:

Vicky Cristina Barcelona: Apparently there are some attractive women in this movie. I know this because my boyfriend kept stopping whatever he was doing and leaning over to watch this, too. Nice performance by Penelope Cruz, worthy of the Oscar she received. And it kept me interested for the duration, but for what? I couldn't get the point of this movie, and it was nothing more than a trifle. And as I've stated before in this thread, voiceovers drive me crazy--and this one was particularly bad as the voiceover added nothing to the story and had this oddly documentary quality to it. A perfect example of mediocrity: 2.5/5.

Rachel Getting Married: Had no idea what to expect here and was extremely pleasantly surprised. What can I say, I'm a fan of movies about dysfunctional families, and this one felt very real to me. Anne Hathaway's performance was astounding, and if I didn't love Kate Winslet so much I'd say Hathaway was robbed of an Oscar. All of the supporting performances were fantastic as well. This movie reminded me of an American take on families similar to the French take in movies such as Kings and Queen and A Christmas Tale (two of my favorites of all time). Terrific pacing and direction as well. A must-see as far as I'm concerned. 4.5/5

Bottle Shock: I tried to watch this despite someone's horrible review of it in this thread. I mean, with Alan Rickman and Dennis Farina in it, it can't be that bad, right? Wrong. I switched to playing electronic sudoku instead. 1/5

as younger actors go, he's a nice contrast to Joseph Gordon-Levitt of "3rd Rock from the Sun".

Breaking And Entering

Blech. This movie had real promise. Jude Law, Robin Wright Penn, Juliette Binoche, Juliette Binoche, Ray Winstone. Can't miss, right? Hey, I have an idea: let's put in a hooker character. Oh, and make sure she has a heart of gold. What the ####?! Are you serious? Aside from the cliche where the good guy punches out the mean guy, the hooker cliche is so played. Ridiculous. What's more, am I to believe that Jude Law can catch a really agile free-runner? These guys can scale buildings, but I am supposed to suspend my disbelief and imagine that Jude Law can catch one of these mutants.

I am half way through this movie, and if anyone can tell me why I should finish it, I will listen.

Just got done watching this. Nothing more needs to be said. Excellent and heart wrenching.

HYPE ALERT:

Fans of documentaries, I cannot say enough good things about Children of Breslin. Riveting documentary about the massacre at a Russian school a few years back. One of the most powerful things I have ever seen. Trust me, you will be blown away. Nothing but interviews with the children that survived the massacre. Brilliant.

Only on VHS now (a crime) but Netflix allows you to save the movie.

Sex Drive Pretty bad movie with some funny lines and scenes. Can't say I would recommend it...
Honestly, it was one of the best comedies of the year IMO. Seth Green almost had me in tears.
Really? I won't deny that I laughed at points, and agree that Seth Green's character was funny. But I wouldn't put in near anything like Super Bad or Pineapple Express...
I wasn't impressed with most comedies this year. I'd say it was far better than Pineapple Express and a little behind Super Bad and Zach and Mira.

I haven't seen the reboot but I do remember the original's scene causing some controversy for it's time...I'd assume they'd have to take it up a notch in order to stir the same sort of controversy.
