Saw Changeling yesterday.

Extremely well done, but the subject matter was horrible/heartbreaking. One of those movies like Schindler's List where it's great but you won't want to see it twice.

Revolver - what a suckfest this was. didn't really follow it, and i got the feeling that even if i did, i wouldn't like it any more. :hot:

woody allen's "scoop" with scarlet, woody, ian mcshane and hugh jackman. unwatchable. i have a huge soft spot for woody because he can make superb, original films. this was not his finest hour. scarlet was not really up to the job in this.

"run, fat boy, run" was really weak. i like simon pegg a lot but this was not the script for him. radiant thandie newton squandered here.

the day the earth stood stillwatchable but it just did not do it for me
Watched this last night, It was okay, but Will Smith's little kid made the movie almost unwatchable. He was a total brat. The original was 10x better.Marley and Me was good but I have 2 little daughters and yes, it got a little dusty in the house that night for all involved.

Is she ever? All she is is a moderately good looking face with a large rack. Terrible actor.

i liked her in "lost in translation". she was fine for "the island" with ewan macgregor. she's just not up for that kind of role. woody wasn't helping her any really...

I could be confusing her with somebody else, but I liked her as a kid actor in some indy movie about teenage runaways... maybe she was pregnant in it? What the hell movie am I thinking about?I remember it mostly because my date made us walk out of "Walking and Talking" midway through which I was enjoying (and still enjoy) and that was the only one starting at the right time.

Since then, I'm mostly just suprised by her boobs' -not her acting- growth.

Summer of Sam- surprised I have never seen this before now
I really like this movie. Underrated.
Is this a horror movie? Or more true to real life?
Neither really, it focuses more on paranoia and just the atmosphere that the murders created. Its been a long time since I've seen it but I remember it being more about style than substance, I enjoyed it.
The part with the dog really freaked me out.

Happy-Go-Lucky- I'm on record for being a huge Mike Leigh fan. I think he's able to flesh out intimate melodrama into something with more... dunno- cinematic and substantial (rather than made-for-TV fare). He always gets great performances from his actors (the collaboartive part of his process seems to work great for them) and his eye for framing shots to tell the story visually as well as verbally has improved dramatically with each work (I thought Topsy Turvy was a beautifully film on a purely visual level). I also like how he's able to instill darker/broken elements into his otherwise light films, particularly within the character studies.

This movie, however, seemed like a complete waste of time to me. I honestly just didn't get the point of a Happy-go-Lucky character traipsing through 90 minutes of my life. It still was well acted and beautifully filmed, but pointless. Somebody else fill me in here? No character arc, despite the usual interaction with less-than-happy-go-lucky people/events... is that the point? Am I a bad person for wanting her character to have cracked? Or at least gotten run over by a bus?
Mike Leigh is great. His dialogue is always excellent and his characters are rich. But just that Happy-Go-Lucky trailer was enough to make me kill myself. Yes, I'm dead.
Both :lmao: . I just watched this. Mike Leigh is genius, and this was no exception, in terms of the things that make his movies great (though I agree there was no character arc for the lead). But the lead character of this movie made me want to stab myself in the eye. Arrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhh.

Lost in Translation is the template for her lazy, moody acting. The Island is from ###-merchant Michael Bay - therefore I couldn't stomach it. Ghost World is the only Johansen movie where I thought she had some potential.

Saw Rescue Dawn the other day and thought it was pretty good IMO. I didn't realize until the end that Werner Herzong wrote and directed this film.

Finally saw Old Boy... over the course of three nights (dvr). I'm still not sure how I feel about it... which is better than an immediate :goodposting: .

Let the Right one in

Had this one for awhile, and finally got a chance to watch it yesterday. I really enjoyed the movie, but for some reason, it felt like it was missing something in parts. It did a great job focusing on the two young kids and they were both terrific, imo, in their roles. The subtlety with which their relationship progressed, from the lack of eye contact, to the hugging, I dunno, I thought it was really well done. However, they seemed to not give enough detail to the supporting characters and their relationships to the primary two characters. Eli's protector was horrible, I mean they set up a scene where he is packing his bag, yet fail to explain why some of the stuff he is carrying. And he is just the worst, I mean, how can't he get caught. Yet the pain he felt as Eli was securing her relationship with Oskar was nicely done. And Oskar's father, what is the deal with his "buddy" that stops over while Oskar is there? The scene felt awkard, and forced and yet without answer or further remark throughout the movie. The last scene can be interpreted a few ways, and I'm fine with both of them actually, I thought that was a nice way to close it out. I'd say this was one of the better movies I've watched over the past few years, but I still came away from it with a feeling of slight disappointment. Either way, still recommended, score it a 4.25/5.0.

watched the first disc of the hbo mini-series "k street". produced by soderbergh and clooney, it takes a stab at lobbying within Washington DC. it's pretty loose storytelling - which can be frustrating - but it's kind of interesting nonetheless. it uses real "players" in DC - senators, congressmen, journalists, etc - to give it some authenticity. maybe the most surprising thing is how good carville and matalin are as versions of themselves.

Notorious: Good portrayal of Biggie. Most of the actors played their roles great (except the guy playing Tupac). If you don't like rap, you won't like it. 3.5/5

The Wrestler: I don't get the hype. The movie was pretty boring and unmoving. What happened in the movie? Guy had a heart attack and tried picking up a stripper. Thats it. Two hours I won't get back. 1/5

The Uninvited: Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Decent movie up until giant ridiculous plot twist at the end. 1/5

Australia: Started off slow but I got a lot more into as it went on. A few parts definitely dragged on but in the end it was pretty good. 3/5

Rachel Getting Married

Pretentious, pointless, meandering, heavy handed, shallow, full of unrealistic/unrelatable characters you couldn't like. Awful.

He also directed the awesome doc about that guy's story - Little Dieter Needs To Fly. I cannot say enough good things about that film.
I will check this one out. Big Herzog fan. Not sure if I mentioned this somehwere in this thread, but has anyone seen Incident at Loch Ness? Dry and funny with Herzong doing pseudo-comedy. Loved it.

Seen it a few years back and thought it was very good.

Went to see "State of Play" yesterday.. interesting twists and angles.. 3.5 out of 5.. So close to being a 4 but something was missing for me and I can't quite put a finger on what it was.. :goodposting:

If you enjoy Political ##### bags vs. reporters who want the story regardless of the cost vs. the Police who hate reporters finding info before them you'll enjoy it.

If you haven't seen The Grand yet, be sure to do so. Herzog is at his finest playing "The German", I enjoyed even more than Incident at Lock Ness which had my attention as well. The plot and pacing of the Grand is pretty brutal but the actors did a lot of good work poking fun at some poker heavyweights.

Most creative and original vampire movie I've ever seen. Great story. To be fair, though, vampire flicks aren't really my thing. I really don't have much to go on, save The Lost Boys, Interview and a few others.

I haven't seen that one.The Dieter movie is mostly great because Dieter is about as genuine and decent as anyone I've ever seen on the big screen. You really empathize with his harrowing story.

There was one with Willem Defoe which was set up as a mock docu/historical account of the first Vampire movie... loved it.

The Wrestler

Was a big fan of Pro Wrestling in my pre and early teen years. Really an incredible movie for the subject matter. Heartbreaking and a roll that Mickey Rourke was made for. The Hardcore match is absolutely brutal, and I usually have a pretty strong stomach. Film was made to be as personal as possible with a lot of really close shots and shots following over the shoulder of Rourke. If you're not big into Inde movies, this may be an immediate turn off and was distracting for me in some parts.

4/5 and Rourke deserved every bit of praise for his performance, he is "The Ram".

The Spirit: Pure trash. .5/5
I expected some tongue and cheek here, but was unprepared for how truly outrageous this movie is. It reminded me in a lot of ways of the Speed Racer movie, which isn't real strong praise. I would only recommend it to diehard fans of Samuel L Jackson cheese. You'll see him do things like melt a kitten and watch its eyeballs roll down a sink drain, or observe a face/foot mutation he created.I did fine some humor in the Pathos, Ethos, etc... henchman

The Henchmen and Eva Mendes were the only reason I didn't shut it off. I've grown extremely tired of watching Jackson play the same damn character in every movie. Right now I can't rank him much higher than Cage or Reeves.

I didn't care for this movie and the dog pretty much clinched it. But I tend to either like or dislike Spike's movies. Rarely any middle ground for me when it comes to his flicks.Or joints.

Need to add Hollywoodland. Wasn't there another murder mystery flick that was similar, that came out around the same time too?
I think it was Black Dahlia. Anybody seen that flick?
Saw it not that long ago. Beyond bad IMO. Never getting that time back.
It was pretty disappointing. Other than Hilary Swank being ridiculously hot (much hotter in my opinion than Scarlett Johanson) there wasn't anything really to recommend the film. For those who think it's going to primarily be about the Dahlia murder, I suggest they read James McElroy's book first. That will better prepare you for the story.

That's the one- thanks, guys. Didn't Defoe get an Oscar nod for his role too? He was freaking brilliant and hilarious in that movie.

I should have listened to the regular contributors to this thread, but I couldn't resist. Brilliant premise, horrible execution. Can't recommend it. I've laughed more from thinking about the premise and the ideas than the actual movie.

On my Netflix feedback thingy, I gave it two out of five stars.
Yeah- I disliked that one, especially because it really should've been so much better/funnier given the maker, cast and premise. But IIRC, there was a fair bit of love for that one in here... I seem to recall being mostly in the minority about disliking it (and I actually forced myself to watch some of it a second time just in case I missed something the others had tapped into. :banned:

The movie had its moments ("OW MY BALLS" was hilarious). But Futurama is a lot funnier using the same material.
